RE: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Mark a PERSON as Never Married?
I wouldn't be keen on that unless it was optional. I don't tag children because it feels odd to me to say a child who died in infancy never married and had no children. Some things go without saying. It's just a personal thing and I'll probably be shot down for this point of view, it's just how I feel. Now there's a curious thing. It has been this way since I originally downloaded 8 and that was sometime ago. If I minimise then maximise (A) the screen it does corrects itself. If I go to another person (B) it is a mix of bold and not, as originally mentioned. Then I go back to (A) it's back to bold and not, as the case maybe.I guess it's just something on my system and not worth worrying about. RE: [LegacyUG] Occupations on a tree
For my 2 cents worth. I would like the opportunity to include occupation and if I could vote on it I would.Preferred occupation would be my choice, rather than a string of them. I have a few job hoppers in my tree and for them I would not bother with a preferred. I'd leave them blank just as I would a housewife. RE: [LegacyUG] Rules for Entering Place Names in England and Canada
Thank you to whoever started this conversation. I have learnt so much and it has made me think about how I want my locations to reflect my family history. I was raised in a place in NZ named Papatoetoe (general incorrectly pronounced papa towee). Once I started doing family research I found it was originally called Papatoitoi (toi (pronounced toy) is a native grass). I had been so busy making my locations match the NZ post office standards I lost sight of what this was all about. I will revisit and correct and based my addresses on their moment in history. I'm still considering if I will write my address left to right or right to left (country in first or last position).Everyone's responses has made me think but Barry your answer made it click. Thank youOlwyn Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2014 18:35:22 -0800 From: b_goodbee...@rogers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Rules for Entering Place Names in England and Canada To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com I have been thinking about the Location issue and have come to realize that there is no perfect solution. Using the terms Place in Events, Location in Citations and having the ability to add an Address with Postal Code to an Event adds to the confusion. The fact that we are recording information from a different time period when life was a lot simpler adds to the problem. I keep coming back to the fact that a fundamental fact of recording information from a time long ago is to record it as it was then and not to modify the details to fit into our current mode of doing things. Who would of thought we would have had postal codes and GPS's?As it relates to Census records, specifically England and Wales, I suggest that the Citation Details page be changed to reflect the information available from the Census record and not cherry pick in away that does not flow.My first suggestion after having completed the Source page identifying The National Archives as the source I would enter all the details of the Census into the Citation Detail window in this order.First I would identify the Census with the National Archives reference of PRO RG12 Piece Number 1200 Folio 30 Page 50 (eg). This is the information you need to identify the specific Census record.Second I would list the Location details starting with Administrative County, then Civil Parish, Ecclesiastical Parish, then County Borough,Municipal Borough or Urban District, then Ward of Municipal Borough or Urban Borough, then Rural District, then Parliamentary Borough or Division and lastly Town or village or Hamlet, all as listed at the top of the Census sheet. If this information is not complete it can be viewed on the Description of Enumeration District (ED 22 eg) sheet or from the present day transcriptions. Some of this information may not be relevant in today's thinking but it is important to record the information as it was then. Also be wary of transcriptions with mistakes!Next I would enter the Road, Street etc,and No or Name of the House.Note: Currently the information entered into the Location Details box does not appear in the Master Location listing. Then the person's ID with maybe relationship to Head of Household and marital status. All information should be recorded as shown on the Census sheet without any changes to spelling. Create an AKA if you wish but often there has been no change to the name other than the enumerator wrote down what he or she thought they heard. I'm sure a suitable Citation Detail template could be developed to satisfy the recording of the Census information in this manner. There is a template now so it must be possible.Other information such as age, occupation, where born or health condition can be recorded elsewhere within the Legacy software with reference to the appropriate Source. If a Location is required to appear in the Master Location listing then an Event/Fact needs to be created (Residence/Place eg), using poetic license as necessary if you wish it to be recognizable in today's maps or atlases. A note could be added to the Event to record the original information. Don't forget also things change and what existed 100 years ago might not exist today! Also bear in mind that the software default of Place, County, State, Country is not universal and may not meet your needs. Sorting from right to left mitigates this problem somewhat. As to the sharing of Sources the process really is sharing the Source and the Citation Details with the only thing changing is the person's ID. The person's ID is not shared. There is also an issue with a family sharing the same house with details spread over two pages each having two different NA references. Maybe I should stick with cut, paste and edit? This diatribe relates primarily to the 1851 to 1901 England and Wales Census but the underlying concept of recording any Source information should be that it should be recorded as is with no modifications. Any errors, spelling mistakes etc

I'm still perfecting my own naming convention and always looking to improve. The primary reason for my email was a thank you and my comment was only meant as a observation question. In the Webinar Geoff (and I love everything you do Geoff) had his documents and pictures in folders with country being the highest location level yet his Source List Name had state as the highest location level. I was only wondering why. Olwyn From: genea...@gmail.com To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: Revisited - [LegacyUG] Sourcing - just don't get it! Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2014 10:35:37 +0800 Olwyn, The Source List Name which is what I think you mean by Source Title since you talk about starting with a place - which is what Geoff does - is just for you to help you find the Master source again and keep them in some logical order. If you (not others like me who don't know all the US States and Canadian Provinces) need the country to identify that Ohio is in the USA and not in Canada or elsewhere, then put it in, if not, don't. I don't start the Source List Name with the place at all since I have very little USA research and the place down to US county level is not so important or not important at all as that's not where the records I use are kept. I start the Source List Name with the Source Type and then mention the country or place later. The Source List Name is for you only unless you use Basic Sources and are very lazy and use it as the Source Title - in which case either your Master Source list isn't nicely ordered or the Source Title isn't properly formatted. I think what I want is similar. How to print the tree left to right, top – bottom. As an example, in the Top left would be my gg grandparents, next column across their children with spouses top to bottom, next column across is listed their children’s children and spouses (top to bottom), next column across etc. So Column 1 would have one couple, column 2 could have 8 (big gaps between each child) etc Do you see what I mean? I would print it on A3 size paper and tape together at the breaks. I was given a copy of a tree printed this way and found it visually easy when explaining family connections. The short answers to your questions are: Is Centennia as detailed as Animap - no. Is it worth its price - yes. First, I wish AniMap went to the township level, not just county (township being smaller political jurisdictions). In many counties of my ancestors the township changes were as significant for record finding as counties. You will find a similar problem in Centennia. Note that Centennia says it is based upon actual control of land, not political boundaries. Centennia has a free period of time download that you should check out before buying to see if the detail suits your need. I have found the mist value (to me) of Centennia to be able to see and understand the trials and tribulations of the populace at the various times and places of my immigrant ancestors homeland. [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
Hello When I print the descendant's report I would like to include a line to indicate the couple had no children. Just the same as in the screen reference Had no children. Is it possible? Also I would like to exclude the word Unknown for printing when I do not have the father's name in the report. I'm would rather a blank space or another description e.g +..My older sister's father is unknown (my mother won't tell and refuses to discuss ) I just don't feel comfortable when I show my sister the tree and this word is there. RE: [LegacyUG] How do I include - no issue (children) and exclude unknown
My personal thanks to Mary and Ron. I think my install maybe a problem. The leave blank option is checked and I don't have access to the child status tab (greyed out). I do have the deluxe version but may have installed it badly. I have as suggested reported a problem. I am confident I will have both these options working soon. Again my thanks for taking the time to help. Please select this and do your report again. If the ‘unknown’ still appears I would be grateful if you would report it as a bug. It is the same for Pedigree web pages and over the years I have asked for it to be corrected – maybe you will more luck! Geoff are you a touch typist? Do you use any OCR software? If yes, what is it? Whatever you use is what I will use (you can email directly). Olwyn From: ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] RINs Date: Tue, 24 May 2011 20:41:16 +0100 Charlotte, There is no point in renumbering all the RINs, they are just numbers. They are useful in identifying a specific person and they also provide the file name for Pedigree webpages. Otherwise they serve little purpose. Normally the start person, that is the person who created the site has RIN 1 and this number is incremented by 1 as each new person is added. I can see the point in fillings gaps which are normally created by deleting a person or merging a (eg.) GEDCOM starting with much higher RINs, but I would be interested to know what you wish to achieve by a complete renumbering (if it could be done). Any such alleged system created would be rendered useless as soon as a new person is added or someone is deleted. I repeat, a RIN is simply a number. Olwyn From: ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] scanning photographs Date: Wed, 11 May 2011 21:10:19 +0100 Larry, The point is that a TIFF is lossless. What this means is that you can edit the picture eg remove blemishes, alter colour balance etc. and then save without any loss in picture quality. With other formats, including PNG, when you save after editing then there is a quality reduction, and this is accumulative, so the more times you do an edit and save then the greater the loss in quality. With, say, a JPG the loss it not noticeable after only one or two edit/saves but is often very obviously after more. The loss occurs on saving, btw, not during the edit. Hence the recommendation to save the master as a TIFF and the files in use as JPG, PNG GIF etc.. There will be a few I need to print in this method but if the direct descendant is male I will revert to the standard format. It will be worth it for me.
