Canada Census I was just on the Library and Archives Canada website for a
search of the 1871 Canada Census for a relative. I discovered that the 1931
Canada Census is now available for searching by name. Here is the URL of the new
Multi-census search tool. You can search for your Canadian relatives in any or
all of the Canadian censuses list on the search page. The 1931 Census is now
included in that list and I am doing a genealogy happy dance because I am
looking at the census page for my father! Here is the description of the 1931
census from Library and Archives Canada:"The seventh national census was taken
on June 1, 1931. Information was further condensed into four schedules:
Schedule 1: Population Schedule 2: Agriculture Schedule 3: Institutions
Schedule 4: Merchandising and service establishmentsOnly Schedule 1 was
preserved and it had 40 questions. In the 1931 Census three different forms of
the population scheduled were used: Form 1A for the Maritimes and Québec
and Ontario Form 1B for the Western provinces Form 1 - N.W.T. for the
Northwest TerritoriesIn one instance a rather resourceful enumerator, used an
accountant’s ledger book to record information. The 1931 Census was the first to
ask if the family owned a radio. Since this Census was taken during the
Depression, there are also several questions related to unemployment, including
periods of unemployment and causes. The sub-district names or boundaries in 1931
are not the same as those for 1921, particularly for large cities."Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know if there is an easy way to configure a single click button that uses replaceable parameters in URL ?

2020-06-28 Thread bobstree2
Try this:1. Log in to Ancestry.2. Go to the page you want to be at.3. Copy the
URL for that page.4. Paste that URL into the bottom field on the User Tool
Button page, and save it.==Instructions:1. To use the button, you
will need to make your browser is open and you are logged into Ancestry
first.2. Click on the Legacy button you created above.3.  This will only work
for the page you first selected.  It does not accept
parameters.=Optional approach:1. If you are going to the results
page of a Search, you can copy that page's URL, and identify and replace the
search parameters you should see there.  Now paste the URL into your button as
noted above.  I have not tried these steps, just repeating steps I have taken
to perform similar tasks.  Takes only a few minutes to see if it works for
you.Personally I think it is easier to save the page as a bookmark/favorite,
and go to that page using your browser.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census

2019-08-29 Thread bobstree2
I make a census event for each family individual on the census,  I do NOT use
Shared Events.  (I also add Residence and Occupation Events from the census, if
listed).  Copy/Paste Events great tool! But I also download and save each
census page as a PDF with OCR ability (Different programs to do that, suggest
trying free utility, Greenshot. Many scanners have that option also.). All my
records are in family subfolders for each surname, all under one Surname folder
(Thanks Geoff!) .  My file naming method also includes a document TYPE code so
I can easily identify Census records.  File naming format example:
LASTNAME_FirstName_MMDD_TYPE_Location_misc.
extATKINSON_Thomas_&_family_19200108_CEN_Somerville
MA_p1of2.pdfSULLIVAN_Arthur_19200407_BIR_Somerville.pdfSHANNON_Robert_&_family_19400412_CEN_Chelsea
 MA.pdfO'CONNOR_James_&_EDWARDS_Catherine_19150418_MAR_Chelsea MA.pdfYou can
see two Census, one Birth, one Marriage record .So with OCR ability, it is
easier to scan electronically, vs.  manual reading.   But be prepared to miss
some items due to quality of PDF, and handwriting.   OCR works best with typed
characters.  And the naming convention makes it easy to know which files to
scan. Just one set of tools that works for me, I am sure others will offer
their methods. Good luck

[LegacyUG] Cloud backup registration

2019-08-25 Thread bobstree2
Is Cloud Backup still broken?  In any case, I am unable to use it. I am unable

authorization email, responded to it, got an account confirmation screen
message, but never got a final confitmation email. When I try to do Cloud
Backup I keep getting a login screen that just closes Legacy.   When I tried to
do a registration again after three cycles of this, I get a screen msg that
this account has already been created, great, another confirmation of my
account but Legacy does not remember login and Legacy continues to Exit. Local
backups work OK as long as I don't check box for Cloud Backup. Any solution or
good suggestions?   (Legacy 9,latest version, on Windows 10 Pro) --

We just released an update. Two things to know real quick.

1) You will need to go to Options > Customize > View > Option 8.2. Select
your preferences and save. These have been changed back to the defaults
because Dave did a ton of work with these numbers.

2) When you first open your file, it will go through a source checking
routine. This will only happen when you open the file the first time in this
new build. It is reformatting the sources in such a way that they will
transfer to FamilySearch okay. It doesn't actually change anything that you
entered, it just makes it so FamilySearch can see the entire source and not
just the source name.

  Hi

      Interesting problem, and my first
question is 'why did you do it that way?'

  All pre-1911 census records can
be indexed by the Head of the family or by a location
& page number (better if there are multiple families
on the sheet). Individual 1911 census records can be
indexed by the Head of the family and the summary sheets
as before. Equally, BMD images must relate to one or more
individuals, especially for parish records, which can be
used to index them which I then extend with the date of
the event. I have also structured the media folder into
separate sub-folders by census year, births, marriages,
deaths etc. which simplifies the file name system.

      However, somehow you need to
build a list of the existing images and associate them
against a list of new names, and then process them.

How good is your VBA since that
will be only way to do it and, depending on exactly how
you you want to structure the new file names, can be built
to do it automatically. Yes, it can be done, but you will
need to work through the tables to identify what you need
to find and update, and also make the change to the file
as well. Alternatively you could write an external program
  to do it.

It happens that I am a programmer
and have worked on Access VBA, and I would need several
attempts to write something to do it and test it out. Of
course working on a backup copy until I was 100% happy
that it was correct and that Legacy still liked it.

Otherwise, it is the slow 'do it
by hand' method. Change the file name, open the individual
or event and manually re-identify the file - the media
relinker is pretty well useless at that job if you let it
try to locate the image, which no longer exists.

Regards

Chris

[LegacyUG] FAMILIES

2018-10-06 Thread bobstree2
The FAMILIES forum has been dropped with a message to use this forum instead.
So my question is:  How do I unlink a child from parents?
I had linked seven children to the wrong parents, then later added them to the
correct ones.  Found I could not unlink them.
On one child I clicked on the arrow box next to the father.  Got a prompt to
select desired parents and that further compounded the problem making those the
parents of their step brothets/sisters.
Deleting the children or parents would be a problem, too much data to re-enter.
If no way to do this, should be added as a new feature.
Have been using FAMILIES for over five years and love it.  Keep up the great
work.

Cindy,
I am a little confused. You said you have been using Legacy for several years
but you are having problems getting info on how to generate reports, publish
etc. There have been no changes in how reports are generated (a few more
options have been added to make the reports cooler).

1) On every screen in Legacy there is a Help button.  If you click the Help
button it will take you to the appropriate location in the Help File for that
topic so that you don't have to search for what you are looking for.

2) Legacy 9 now includes the PDF version of the User's Guide.  In previous
versions this was a separate purchase.

3) We also have Knowledge Base articles that are searchable here
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com

4) The Legacy videos (free) are here
http://www.familytreewebinars.com/legacy_videos.php

5) You are a member of the mailing list and you can ask any questions here

6) If you are on Facebook there is a Legacy Users Group there that has over
18,000 members.  You can join here
https://www.facebook.com/groups/LegacyUserGroup/

Both of the Legacy Users Groups are monitored by some of the staff, beta
testers, and translators.

7) Here is a collection of Legacy 101 articles
http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2018/05/compilation-of-legacy-101articles.html

You can get most of your questions answered using these tools.  If there is a
question that you haven't been able to find the answer to you can email us at
supp...@legacyfamilytree.com  or if you have a suggestion for a new feature you
would like to see, you can submit it here

I do not think that you can download a csv file from Ancestry. Just
giving a file a name like filename.csv does not change the content. if
you downloaded a file from Ancestry it is probably a GEDCOM file which
is the standard format for genealogical files.

Rename the file to filename.ged
Open Legacy and use file > Import > GEDCOM file
when you have finished the import from filename.ged
Go to View > Name List
Click Options > Print
Now you will be able to define up to three rows of data you can include
for each person.
Select CSV file in the lower right
The print box in the upper right will change to Create
Click create
In the dialog box select the folder where you want to save the file and
assign a file name
Click save
Remember where you saved that file
Open Excel then open the file you exported from legacy.

If this is a temp process maybe this will work
1. Make a temp copy if the file and do steps 2, 3, 4 in the temp copied file.
2. Remove the tags as desired. 3. Create the report and deliver it. 4. Delete
the temp copied file.
5. Continue using the original file, no need to restore those tags, they were
never removed.

Hi Cathy, [This time I'll hit Reply All instead of Reply]

Sorry I should've continued to explain.

I need one Individual Report, no trouble with that, but at the moment I
have one Event, amongst many many others, but this one particular event
is a personal Letter sent in 1916, and this obviously is marked private,
and I don't ever want it exported.

I'm being lazy here I know, but for this person I've marked every event
as Private, as it ensures the research stays with me.   Easy I thought,
just untag all the events privacy tag, mark this letter event as private
and then do the Report without choosing to export Private material.

The Sources don't worry me that much, as the Report is going to a
Museum, so they'll w ant to know how I know; It's only this one event I
want to stop.

So if my explanation has got any better, I wondered does Legacy allow me
to remove private tags from events in a kind of a Search & Replace ?

Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] .fdb file list

Install FREE search utility, "Everything" from https://www.voidtools.com/
To use to find fdb files:1.  Install, choose option to install on Context Menu.
2.  Open Windows Explorer and browse down left side to desired folder (or
higher in tree). 3.  Right click on folder name. 4.  Select "Search Everything"
(red magnifying glass icon) 5.  Type "fdb" after the default line ("C:" fdb
no quotes). 6.  Get instant results. Includes sub folders by default. (So, if
you select a drive letter you see every file on entire drive).
Lots of features, can do mapped drives, not just locals.  Excellent
documentation. Forgot where the Legacy. USR files are?   I did.   Just went to
folder for Drive C aand added usr to follow the * and quickly saw where they
were.   Many more tools: wild cards, sorting, file preview, match case,
files/folders only, RegEx, and much more.
This might sound like I am a rep, but I am just a happy genealogy user sharing
tools.
Good luck

Re: [LegacyUG] How best to share my database

2017-08-11 Thread bobstree2
Why install a different program,  go through various steps to export, result in
maybe some missing data/info,  have different tools and menus and layouts,
etc.?
Just install free Legacy, send the file as is (no export needed), and open the
file?   No cost, nothing lost, same tools to guide them through any questions.

Leonard, I got a clean import of my data to AQ by choosing export to GEDCOM,
then using the Legacy destination (I think this is the default showing when you
get to this screen).  I  UNTICKED:  keep embedded formatting codes within text–
(if left ticked, odd characters surround some words in AQ. It looks like where
I’ve bolded something in a note or title and AQ doesn’t recognize the
formatting codes). I kept ticked:  Override Source options – include all source
information.  Now click on  Customize On this screen I ticked to EXCLUDE:
Address/PhoneChild statusMedical NotesResearch NotesTo do items (I use the
Research notes heavily and I don’t know if you can exclude them from reports in
AG so I didn’t include them in my export. They will import if you want to
include those. The Medical Notes I don’t use for that purpose. If you use that
field, let me know and I’ll do a test to see how they are treated in AQ) Click
on OK and Select Filename and start export Using these settings, my notes and
photos are included in the import to AQ and all expected information looks in
place after import. Of course, if you use photos, you would need to send a
folder with those maintained in the same folder structure and your recipient
would need to place that folder in exactly the same location on their hard
drive in order for the photo paths to be recognized. I get a boatload of errors
but looking through them, it is tags and associations in Legacy that AQ doesn’t
know what to do with so are thrown out. Example: child relationship where I set
a child as biological for one parent and step child for the other parent.
Cremation tag isn’t recognized in AG, at least in the lite version. The vitals
information is correct, just doesn’t indicate a cremation. If I used a
Cremation event, that would be recognized as all of my events appear to have
been imported properly. Phone numbers and addresses in some fields are seen as
errors by AQ.  Other items in the errors log are the tags, which I use
extensively in Legacy. AQ doesn’t know what to do with those so they are
discarded and reported as an error.  All major information in my Legacy
database appears to me to be recognized and placed in proper fields in AQ. I
didn’t include my Research Notes as I use that note field heavily and in the
lite version of AQ, I don’t see a way of excluding those from reports or Family
Group Sheets. They clutter a printed report so I just excluded them for export
testing purposes. You may wish to share your research notes. I don’t know if
the full version of AQ allows for excluding those when printing text reports.
The lite version does not. I tried other GEDCOM settings by removing or adding
items but surprisingly, the settings mentioned above give me the best, cleanest
AQ import. If you’d like to see an example of what a report looks like, where
events and photos are included, I’d be happy to print, scan and attach as a pdf
to an email. Since I only have the lite version of AQ, it doesn't appear I can
actually save a report directly to a PDF file. I understand you are wanting the
notes content to be exported. Using the settings above, all of my notes were
recognized by AG. I must mention I do not use the Birth, Death, Burial notes
fields accessed at the end of the vitals fields. If you do and want to know if
they export and import OK, I’ll set up a little test to see how they are
handled. I do change Burial to Cremate, where appropriate and that tag isn’t
recognized by AQ. Please let me know if I can try something else or help with
further testing. Mary   From: LegacyUserGroup

Re: [LegacyUG] citing an online obituary

2017-07-14 Thread bobstree2
I will not get involved in the "correct way" of sourcing, that is a personal
choice.   But i do see a major distinction between an image and a
transcription.
An image is a picture of an actual item as it exists to the
photographer/scanner.

But a transcription is someone's interpretation of the actual item.  A
transcription is subject to clerical errors, missing information accidentally
or intentional, and or personal conclusions and/or editing.
An image is closer to a Primary Source depending on many factors.A
transcription is definitely Secondary Source at best.

Hi Cathy,

Thank you for your reply.  However, I did take a look at the existing templates
(I thought my post reflected that).  I also may have provided "TMI" (I tend to
do this), was not sufficiently succinct and/or asked obvious questions.  For
example, in the template I ended up selecting, "Newspapers>Online images
(issued by unrelated content provider)," I asked if "issued" means "published
on this website," which I assume it does.  I also nitpicked about the use of
"online image;" I assume that is equivalent to a transcription although it
seems somewhat imprecise.  The distinction is perhaps not important.

The output for my obituary is:

"Andrew Kulesa," Grand Rapids Press, 23 Aug 2014; database, MLive Media Group
(http://obits.mlive.com/obituaries/grandrapids/obituary.aspx?pid=172223191 :
accessed 14 Jul 2017), Obituaries.

I think this is good.  The only gripe I have is that, although the template
provides a field for "State," this does not appear in the output.  I think the
way around this is to insert the state's abbreviation in parentheses between
"Rapids" and "Press."

Re: [LegacyUG] Having a Problem Adding Pictures From "Family View"

2017-06-17 Thread bobstree2
First of all,  Gedcom files DO NOT contain picture files. That is not a Legacy
constraint, it is the same for all gedcoms, regardless of the source.
When Legacy imports a gedcom file, it will read in the links to the locations
of those files if the original file included links to them.   If the picture
files were on another computer, then they must be copied from the previous
computer to the computer where you have Legacy.  (You could also copy them to a
destination that Legacy can access, like DropBox, usb drive, etc.)
If you have not renamed the picture files,  but only moved them to different
folder locations , then Legacy has a relinking tool that can locate the files.
Hope this helps.   Welcome to the Legacy family.   Good luck.

We are here because we want to learn and teach one another how to use Legacy

Yes.
I am not so proficient in Legacy nomenclature.  I fully understood why
baptism and burial for which there may be documentation are reasonable
surrogates for birth and death respectively.

As for my aside about "cause
of death", I was surprised by the fifth default item in the family view
screen.  Why is it so important?  BTW:  RootsMagic includes this
item (also burial but not christening) in its default customizable data entry
screen.

It would have been nice if upon the establishment of a new Legacy
family file, we could be given suggested defaults and an immediate opportunity
to substitute events.  Yes.  I already know about the issue of
reports' templates.

I mentioned my concerns to Legacy but they did
not deem it a priority.

I am looking for a genealogy database program to
recommend to collaborating relatives. The Master Genealogist, my own primary
program, is not suitable.  Legacy is my primary candidate but  I am
still reluctant to recommend it.

People do not have that control over the "vital events" of birth,

For my research the christening

generations as they are the dates that were recorded. I will never know the
birth or death dates of many people because they weren't recorded anywhere. I
know that shows a Western/Christian bias.

So I support the option to

Hope this makes sense --

I need (okay, want) to go back and rename almost all of my media files
(long story).  For the source detail File ID I'm having great success
using Search/Replace.

However, I also have the media file linked to the source cite detail.
So, for instance, I need to change the following:

N:\Genealogy\Media\Documents\Smith_45.pdf to
N:\Genealogy\Media\Documents\Smith_02.pdf

Since the default location hasn't changed, but the file name has, I
don't thing Legacy can find it for me automatically.

Is there a search/replace option I can use for this?  I looked in the
list, but didn't find anything that seemed it would work.

Thanks!

There is also the option that your husband can use the Windows version of
Quicken. It will easily convert the mac files to Windows compatible files. In
the long run he will also have access to more programs, better browsers and

Re: [LegacyUG] Mods / Utilities for Legacy

2016-02-08 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
I have used Families on my Android and am very happy with it. It converts
Legacy to SQL. Microsoft Access works directly with Legacy files, and Access
can also read SQL from Families. Access has excellent tools for creating many
types of reports. And all queries and reports can be saved for future
use/modification. BUT, you must have a good foundation in understanding
databases to maximize its use, and the product is not inexpensive. But many
users of Office Professional already have Access and don't use it.

I have used Access for years, so I can speak of its abilities. But I suspect
there are other SQL products, less expensive, could also generate many good
reports. Use Families toconvert to SQL, then use SQL tools to generate your
reports.

Checkout the FREE open source utility Greenshot. Does not do videos, but it
does do OCR, and can capture full length web pages in MSIE(only) browser that
are longer than the visible window. Multiple image formats, image editor,
annotations, multiple output destinations, etc. Can capture drop down menus
that usually disappear with other similar tools.

Home page is here: getgreenshot.org. I use this daily with my genealogy work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Date error in search

Don't understand the search you are doing, but could date format be an issue?
European dates frequently use DMY vs. MDY in US. So there is no month for
2-20-1950. That would be a normal reject. Does your search tool allow
entering text for the month?

just a thought.

Some versions of Windows used to have problems with "space" characters in paths

Re: [LegacyUG] Win 98 SE install problem

2015-07-29 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Thanks for the suggestion Adrian. From what I can see, everything is there.
Version is 4.10.B

But I seem to have found an install process. I did get it installed, but I
don't know what was missed in the process. This is what I have done:

On each installation attempt, I saw some unknown programs in Task Manager.
They all had the format gl???nnn and nothing else. So, now Iam thhinking,
maybe they are part of the install process?

So, while the configuration was hung, I closed these four programs, one at a
time to see the result, starting with the highest number to the lowest. So I
killed gl???131, waited, closed gl???130, and then gl???02, and finally
gl???01. When the last one closed, I was surprised to see the Legacy
Installion Complete window come up! Great! Legacy 8.501 is installed. I then
imported a FTM GED file and everything seems to be working corectly.

I don't know what those four programs were supposed to do, but for now I will
just have to watch and see what happens. From a tech perspective, I would
really like to understand what was going on (or not going on).

Thanks for listening.

[LegacyUG] Win 98 SE install problem

2015-07-29 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Yes, it MUST hbe on this Win 98 SE system. So changing pc or os is not an
option.

Tried to install Legacy 8 and cannot complete the installl. System hangs at
the end while "updating system configuration". Tried the latest version (501),
and three earlier versions. Don't have the first version of 8, but suspect it
would also hang. I have done removals each time, needed to do manually,
including registry, because Uninstall could not access the uninstall files.
Have run Scandisk,no problems. Have run SFC, Had to replace one file. Ran SFC
again, no problems.

No Av, no firewall to cause problem. No version of Access/Office installed.

Any idea what might be causing this to hang? Version 7.5 installs withno
trouble. I did notice that I was not prompted for a password when installing
8, but did need it with 7. Is there an install log somewhere that I can look
at?

(Googling win 98 SE and legacy brings up everything about old legacy programs,
cannot filter to just see Millenia Legacy).

I am sure someone has the answer, so, thanks in advance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Mark a PERSON as Never Married?

2015-04-08 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Good explanation, you are almost there. For a moment, forget about
relationships, marriages, civil unions, adoptions, etc. Look at the base of
genealogy, genetics, genes, etc. Genealogy was originally intended to trace
the blood sources of a being. The real terms behind genealogy should be "egg
donor" and "sperm donor". Everything else is just a label. You can use Mother
and Father, or Husband and Wife, or Female Donor and Male Donor.

What has happened is that people have discovered genealogy programs and are now
trying to use them for their own purposes, tracking relationships. That is
fine, but don't cry if a genealogy program does not suit your relationship
needs. If you don't like it, use a "relationship" program instead if you can
find one. In the meantime, you can make suggestions, but don't gripe if your
request is ignored if it is not basic to tracking genes. That is why many
programs do not allow for same sex relationships, that is not tracking a
genetic flow, it is tracking a social connection.

Re, " no known children/marriage, no further research needed" is just as bad as
the other suggestions. In fact, this could mean more research is needed! The
"no research needed" box should be a personal tag for the individual, not tied
to any specific reason; but a text field with it to explain for personal
reasons might be good to go with the check box. Ie: "uterus removed at age
11". Should not be exported in a gedcom.

NO. Tribal pages only creates a gedcom file. And you may lose some notes
and/or sources. Tribal Pages also has no method to download the pictures. You
will need to reproduce them from other sources, or do a screen copy of the
images, one at a time.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabet Character set

2015-01-31 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Here my notes from many years ago. They were written by me, for me, and not
for general audience. I have done a quick review, and it looks pretty good to
me. Written for Danish, but substitute desired language for keyboards provided.

= = = = = = = = = = = =
Danish Research Resources:
Extra letters in Danish alphabet. READ ME FIRST
NOTE: Danish has three extra letters in the alphabet: æ, ø, and å.
“Aftagtsmand” is not the same as “Aftægtsmand”.
“Hans Jorgen” is not the same as “Hans Jørgen”.
“Dab” is not the same as “Dåb”.
Be sure to use the correct character. Some database searches especially in
Danish language, will fail with wrong letter.

You can:
· Activate the Danish Keyboard (for all Microsoft operating systems).
· Use the 10 key pad, while holding down the Alt key and typing a code
(for all Microsoft operating systems).
· Copy and paste the Danish letters Æ, Ø, and Å from another document
that already has them.

Instructions for all three methods (Windows XP and Vista)can be found here:
https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Denmark:_Typing_%C3%86,_%C3%98,_and_%C3%85

I recommend activating the Danish keyboard, easy to toggle back and forth as
needed.
Instructions for changing keyboards on Windows7 are shown below.
When done, use ; ' [ respectively for Æ, Ø, Å
---

Configuring Windows 7 and Vista for Danish keyboard.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on the Control Panel item.
3. Select the Language, and Region option.
4. Select the Regional and Language Option.
5. Click on the Keyboards and Languages Tab.
6. Click on the Change Keyboards button.
7. Click the Add button.
8. Find the Danish country item you wish to use. You can also select Faeroese
or Greenlandic for the Danish keyboard layout.
9. Click on the plus sign ("+") to the left of the keyboard.
10. Click on the box to the left of the keyboard layout, Danish. should get a
checkmark
11. Click the OK button to select the keyboard layout and close the Add Input
Language dialog box.
12. Click on the Apply button in the lower right corner of the Text Services
and Input Languages dialog box.
13. Click on the OK button in the lower right corner of the Text Services and
Input Languages dialog box.

Using the Danish Keyboard in Windows
a) After activating the Danish keyboard, you should see a little icon in the
notification area (Near time) near right side of your screen that appears as an
EN.
b) When you click on the EN a pop up list appears with the option of choosing
English or Danish. Choose Danish. Now the EN icon has changed to DA
c) As long as the little icon shows DA, you are using a Danish keyboard. The
Danish keyboard provides the Æ, Ø, and Å as follows:
Æ is the ; (or : ) key
Ø is the ‘ (or “ ) key
Å is the [ (or { ) key

You can type the upper case or lower case of each letter by using holding down
the Shift key as usual. While the Danish keyboard is activated, other keys have
been rearranged as well.
Keyboard language and sticker solutions: http://www.smartkeyboardsolutions.com/

They have Italian, Hebrew, Russian. Do a search for Danish, Polish, and others.
Also Have LARGE PRINT keyboards, and many various styles for English keyboards.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I hope this is useful to someone.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabet Character set

2015-01-31 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
I use Danish characters from my std set of fonts. Windows allows you to make
changes to different language keyboards. The language bar settings are on the
right side of the Task Bar. It takes one keystroke to toggle between English
and Danish.

My grandfather is Hans Jørgen Hansen, from Rudjkøbing, Denmark. Note the "ø"
in Jørgen and Rudjkøbing, that is from toggling to Danish. Those spellings and
characters are OK in Legacy 8. I made personal notes on how to do this, will
see if I can locate them and provide here.

Re: [LegacyUG] cannot edit SourceWriter Details or Master text if picture is attached

2015-01-19 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Thanks for your efforts, Brian. I have come to conclusion that my pc is the
problem, somehow. Reinstalling Windows is probably too drastic an action
because of all the other programs and configurations that have been set up.
So, I need to isolate a missing/ damaged file related to rendering images. I
have run SFC, and it showed no errors. I get clean results from AV and malware
programs. I have changed the default image program to about five different
programs, nothing has changed, I still have the problem.

So my temp solution is to add the Sourcewriter contents as normal, attach the
image, and Save the result. Then, in order to do the Source editing, I rename
the default image path by adding an "x" to the end. This disables the problem,
allows me to edit as required. When editing is done, I remove the "x" from the
path name, restoring it to normal.

I will try to have some phone dialog with the Support person who has responded
to my earlier submissiom. Will try to drop discussions here on the forum
unless someone else has the same issue.

Again, thanks to all who have worked on this for me.

Bob

[LegacyUG] cannot edit SourceWriter Details or Master text if picture is attached

2015-01-18 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Yes, it does occur with a new file. I now know that the problem happens when
editing SourceWriter Sources, either the Master OR the Details with an attached
picture. Does not happen with Basic Sources.

At first I only knew about Edit Details but more testing exposed the problem in
Edit Masters also.

The problem does not occur with attached documents like PDFs but does happen
with attached pictures like JPG, BMP, PNGs. The problem does not happen if the
picture link cannot be found (renamed, moved, deleted, etc.). Seems tied to
displaying the picture image.

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDcom import does not handle SourceWriter sources

2015-01-17 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Hi Cathy

My case is unusual. I was ((and still am) having a problem with my file.
Repair did nothing.
support was unable to duplicate it. So I was curious to see if converting it
might correct the problem.

So, I did an export to a new file, but still had the problem. So I thought
perhaps using GEDcom might correct the problem. I did the export/import but
still had the problem. I was just using this method as a tool to diagnose any
file differences that might help locate the cause.

The good news is that although I still have the problem, I now know that it
only occurs with SourceWriter formats, and not with Basic source formats. So I
think I am closer to locating a solition.

Thanks for oyur help and ideas.

[LegacyUG] Edit Source Details crashes

2015-01-13 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Using latest version 8 on Windows 7, (459 ?).

Source Details causing problems. If I select a field, then click to assign the
Source Details clipboard, the screen starts to change bit noes not complete, I
can only make out the Save/Cancel buttons. If I click on Save, the bad screen
closes, and the field labels are red showing the source has been assigned. If
I look at the Sources for the individual, they look OK. But if I try to Edit
Details, the screen does not open properly, I cannot see the text to be edited,
and. I cannot close the window. Sometimes Legacy closes or stops responding.

I did a File Maintenance, no change. I get the same result on at least two
other files. This is a major problem since I cannot properly add Source
Details.

Suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Maintaining Sequence of Twins/Triplets

Perhaps a simple check box option at the family level to "Ignore sort routines,
keep manual sort" ? Coild also help with multiple children with unconfirmed,
but probably correct sequence.

A few questions as I ponder the options ...

1. If a tool could flag a certain variance from Google, would that help?
2. Why should Google be the standard, assumed correct?
3. How about a tool that got the Google value and over writes the Legacy
value, or gives a choice to choose between them?

Hello Jay.

This sounds like something I might be able to solve for you. I am not familiar
with the full history, but if you can send me samples of "before" and "after"
files, I will try to take a look at it. I just ask for patience, it may take a
while in idle periods. Provide a link that I can download from. I need real
file excerpts, not cut pasted examples, because I need toexamine the real code
beneath the display. After this, it might be best to communicate off line
until we have good results.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering a Location on a Military Base

2014-07-22 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Kinda curious about this Fort Knox issue.

I am guessing that Fort Knox is Federal property. Counties are usually subsets
of state jurisdictions, have officials, budgets, etc. Is it likely that
Federal lands are not subsets of the state, and therefore do not belong to any
county?

Again, timing is critical..was this Federal land at the time of birth? If
YES, then probably no county records, but may be some type of federal records?
If NO, then a county probably did have control at that time, need to research
its name and the county seat in that period.

Try using a Czech keyboard.

I switch to a Danish keyboard for about six characters, and back to English.
Just a quick mouse click to switch between keyboards after set up.

Note, doing this on Windows 7, not sure when this feature was first available.

Re: [LegacyUG] Multiple versions installed?

2014-03-24 Thread BobsTree2-Gmail
Maybe we had different starting points? My installation was an upgrade to 7.5
that was in C:\Program Files\Legacy\ folder. So maybe my installation of 7 was
not a default, and 8 used the same path structure?

In any case, the important thing is renaming LegacyX.lic does toggle between
Standard and Deluxe on versions 7x and 8x. Solves my problem.
