RE: [LegacyUG] 1940 census template questions
After re-reading the instructions and following a mreply from FamilySearch, I continue to enter the data as written. I'm presuming that the Arbitrator will see fit to correct obvious discrepancies and if not, at some point the researcher may be able to view the scanned census sheet and decide for themselves as to the accuracy of the data. [LegacyUG] ZIP Files
I have read the Legacy manual and tried to find this subject in the help files - but have been unsuccessful. It would appear that using a program such as WinZip is necessary - another expense. Could you explain how to utilize the '.zip' files that are saved during the back-up process? e.g., If I wanted to open a zip file I saved a month or so back, how would I do so and use it in Legacy? This may be Legacy 101, but I could use some help. [LegacyUG] 'Missing.txt' Report
I need some guidance from Tech Support or anyone who can help or explain this issue. I installed version 149 and it seems to work OK but this issue has been going on for some time. My problem is that when I go to Options--> Customize --> Locations and then ‘test all Multimedia Paths’, I get a multi-page listing of errors – most of which are identified as ‘Sound/Video’ discrepancies. I have even removed the ‘Sounds’ and the ‘Videos’ from the ‘Master /Sound/Video/File path’ but that didn’t stop the errors from appearing. Since I DO NOT HAVE EITHER VIDEOS OR SOUNDS FILES IN LEGACY, where do these errors come from and why does the error list show ‘Sound/Video:’? I have discovered a possible connection in that when I add a ‘file’ to the ‘Source Detail’--> ‘Multimedia’, this causes the error to be created on the multi-page error report when I run my ‘Location’ check. However, if I remove this multimedia file from the detail and add this same ‘file’ to the ‘Pictures’ on the ‘Edit Source’ option, the file error is no longer seen on the error listing. By way of explanation, I have all my detail sources scanned into ‘C://Legacy/Docs’ and have been adding these as ‘multimedia‘ to the detail records – or at least until this issue arose, now I suppose I need to remove all detail multimedia files!!. Isn’t it possible to consider a ‘file’ as a ‘multimedia’ item when I add it to the ‘edit Detail’ feature? Or is the ‘Pictures’ on the Source file the only place that one should place a picture or a ‘Docs’ file? Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?
After using SW last year for a few of my newer entries, I went back and changed all to the Basic and have since used only the Basic. I had so much trouble in the GEDCOM area, that I lost faith in the SW - its a good program if you do not intend to share via GEDCOM, and I do hope Legacy does not abandon the Basic Source writer. Re: [LegacyUG] Photographs
Thanks John - I DL a program located at the site you suggested and was able to convert the .jpg to .tif file. I will save those on an external HDD - took about an hour to convert and increased storage requirements about 850% going from .jpg to the .tif format - about 3.5 Million KB increased to over 300 Million KB. From what I gather, the quality is frozen at the current converted .tif format. 'Twas a good exercise - thanks. Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Information
I do use the 'repeat' button, but it only enters the actual Burial site, address, coordinates, etc. It does not appear that it repeats the 'notes' as part of this feature. I like to enter where the cemetery is located and how to get to it into the notes. Guess I'll have to re-type that data for those additional folks buried in the same cemetery if I elect this feature. Re: [LegacyUG] FilingRef and SceDetail
Dennis - Disregard my issue for the time being. I confused myself in tryimg to set up a book narrative and eliminate the 'File ID' double entry from appearing in my end notes. I use the 'Basic System' for sources and the table I should have been asking the question about was tblSR. In re-visiting the issue this is the correct table and contains the data I was confused about - the system is workiing as designed - this researcher confused himself - sorry. I had all this data in an obscure note I wrote to myself a long time ago and just ran across it. I need to work on my own filing system! :-) Thanks folks for the replies and help. Bob "Dennis M. Re: [LegacyUG] FilingRef and SceDetail
Jenny and Dennis - Thanks for the info - I had not tried to open an .fdb file, and you are right - it worked just great. Now - Table tblSX is the one I am interested in using since it contains the two subject columns. If I have a filing ID assigned to my sources, why isn't it showing in the FilingRef column? It used to appear in older versions of Legacy, so I wonder if there is something I have done to omit the data. Bob Tim Rosenlof wrote: > On 3/16/2011 5:37 AM, Dennis M. Kowallek wrote: > > P.S. [LegacyUG] FilingRef and SceDetail
I have been using Access to make some minor error corrections as I progress through my Legacy file - converting one of my several backup files from .fdb to .mdb and reversing the process when done (I always maintain several backup copies for safety) . I had been using two of the columns in Access - 'FilingRef' and 'SceDetail' - to review and/or correct data. I am able to see the data in the SceDetail column, but no data appears in the FilingRef column. Has there been a change in the last version (7.5.0.56) that would account for this? It seems to me that formerly the FilingRef column was populated in Access with the Filing ID or the source data from Legacy. I have checked and double-checked the data and when I look at my Legacy file, the information appears there, but not so when I go to Access. Can anyone shed some light on where I am going wrong? [LegacyUG] Master Source Issue
In setting up my Master Sources, I thought I was doing the right thing by adding a source detail using the 'picture --> Picture --> file' routine. After having just done a massive and time-consuming cleanup of my Master source, I now find that having added this source detail to several hundred persons, that I have a whole bunch of RIN's on the 'Missing.txt' report produced when I run the Location 'Options --> customize --> Location --> test...' feature. The resultant 'missing.txt' file is some 30-40 pages long (over 800 records). Is there a way to remove the source detail 'file' from the master source without having to go each of the RIN number in the 'missing.txt' output and change each one individually. The error I seem to have encountered was in changing the titles of the scanned files located in my 'docs' file during cleanup, thus denying the Legacy program a method of identifying the location of the file. The 'details' on one source alone involves some 300+ persons. I've tried a search and replace and some of the LTools features, but have not found a way to remove the source detail. Absent using the 'missing.txt' file and correcting each RIN noted there, I could delete the source and all associated persons, and then re-do the whole source. Just hoping someone has a better suggestion than my poor efforts. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources
Dennis - my profound apologies - after looking at my files more closely, I realize that your suggestion worked perfectly. What I overlooked is that a great number of my sources 'HAVE NO TITLE' (emphasis added to show my oversight), so of course what was in the 'title' subsequent to the 'run' was exactly what I had in my file - 'nothing in title + the FilingRef' equalled what I was seeing was just the 'FilingRef'. Your code worked as you indicated, it was my misreading the end results. Can you suggest a book to educate me on the intricacies of the coding in your SQL? I suspect it is VBA, but I am ignorant of its workings? Bob "Dennis M. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources
Dennis - I tried your suggested query as 'raw SQL' and it worked partially. Unfortunately, it removed titles (or some of them) and inserted the FilingRef only. I would like to have the title composed of the SrcTitle and FilingRef, so that I have my end notes show a title somewhat like 'Population Buncombe County, NC - 1234', when Population Buncombe County NC = SrcTitle and 1234 = FilingRef. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources
Well, let me see: After saving my .fdb file in five places - I selected one of my .fdb files as a test case: (1) I changed the 'test.fdb' to 'test.mdb' and opened 'test.mdb' in Access, where I tried to prepare a query to 'append one field to another'. Results - I am unable to figure out how to do that with my limited knowledge and a book that presumes more knowledge than I possess; (2) I then tried saving the table 'tblSR' as an Excel file, and was able to use the formula '=A3&"-,&b3' to combine the two cells into another cell. I then did a 'ctrl+d' to convert the data for the rest of the column. Unfortunately, my formula on how to convert 'values' is at work and I will not be able to make the cells useable insofar as to copy the column and attempt 'pasting' to the 'tblSR' - even if it were possible. (3) I thought a 'search and replace' might wortk, but each source is a standalone, so I suppose that the next issue I need to attempt is to open each Source in an edit mode and change each of the 1000+ sources I have. I was hoping to circumvent this laborious process. I have been working for the past 6-8 months on data cleanup so I suppose a few weeks more on this process will not kill me. Just hoping someone had an answer. Bob 0042 "Dennis M. [LegacyUG] Sources
I need some advice on combining two pieces of data in the Access mode. What I am hoping to accomplish is to have my Source Titles also contain the Filing ID number so that when I prepare a 'Book --> 'Narrative...', the end notes will have the source title and the file reference number together. Here is what I have tried so far: (1) I go to the Legacy file and change 'file.fdb' to 'file.mdb'; (2) I open it in Access and wish to combine 'SrcName' and FilingRef'; (3) save this database; (4) open the 'file.mdb', change it to 'file.fdb'; (5) they open the 'file.fdb'. So far, nothing I have tried works. I'm not really proficient in Access, so perhaps that is an issue. Is twhat I am proposing possible and if so, a possible solution would be appreciated. Re: [LegacyUG] Digitized Files
Thank you Jenny - Your explanation makes sense and cleared up a lot of my confusion. I had pretty much concluded the same after some trial and error. I started out as a 'splitter' - using a Master Source and then tempering it with detail data for the person involved. Unfortunately, I had begun to change to the 'lumper' mode and have changed 10-20 records to that; however, your information has given me pause to return to my former 'splitter' method. Your suggestion that I should condiser only one master file for say 'Birth Certificates, Town, State,USA', and then use that for all my sources involving Birth Certificates, but if I so desire, I can add the individual digitized Birth Certificate at 'edit detail' --> 'Multimedia' --> 'Picture' --> 'File' to the 'Picture Gallery for Source Detail for Family History'. This would appear to liimit my overall Master Sources but permit me to have my individual scanned documents attached to each person. Am I reading that right? [LegacyUG] Source Writer and File ID
I have tried a few source additions using the 'Source Writer', but I have not been able to find a place on it to add a File ID (or what I call a detail source number that I use) so that it appears adjacent to the Event when viewing the list of events. The basic allows me to enter a detail number and it appears as desired, so where am I going wrong?
