Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-27 Thread Wendy Howard
That's fine, as long as you can get online when you need to access your
backup.

It may not be your genealogy that you want to access, but other
important pieces of information, so don't just think in terms of your
genealogy files.

I recommend something that you can access directly, such as an external
hard drive, as well. If one fails, the other may be okay.

My DELETE button is wearing out. Could we stay on subject of questions about
Legacy?

Some people are trying to make a hobby much too difficult. Everyone with
substantial genealogy or other data on their computer should be backing up to
Carbonite or Mozy or similar, that backs up outside the house without having to
find time to actually do it.

Ideally you direct it to a different physical device (hard drive, memory
stick, etc.) than where your active family file is stored, in case of
hardware failure. Unless it will be promptly backed up by an automated

I backup to an external hard drive and store it in my safety deposit box. It is
important not only to have one or more backups, but at least some of them
should be stored offsite. Offsite options include the cloud, a friend's house,
safety deposit box, whatever.

If not, a fire or flood at your home could wipe out all copies.

Brian,

No, I do not back up to DVDs etc.. I did 10 - 12 years ago but stopped as the
price HD memory fell, I can't remember exactly when that was, but maybe 8 years
ago.

I fail to see why, in the circumstances you describe, a DVD would be preferable
to an external a HD, neither are dependant on the internet, and I do not have
great confidence in a DVD which has been written to many times. In my case, if
the Internet does implode, and the world enters into the consequencial total
disorder, I will be happy in the knowledge that the copy on my external HD and
on my brother-in-law's PC will be available.

Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-26 Thread JLB
I used to back up to disc until it took about 50 of them to do
everything. And then repeating that every few months got ridiculous in
price. And time. Then I did it only to send copies to my family every
couple of years of a relatively small amount of the files in case they
cared about having an update. Nowadays I can zip up a folder and put it
in Dropbox.

An external hard-drive is preferable in every way I can imagine, not the
least of which is that I can back up my files immediately.

I don't understand the point of a safety deposit box, as someone
suggested. Do you go get the drive out, bring it home, update it and go
put it back in the box? If I had that kind of routine on my schedule I'd
probably only get it done once a year.

I just toss my most up-to-date backup drive in my pocket when I leave
the house. Unless the earth swallows my house (plus computer) AND I get
run over by a bus on the same day, it works.

I fail to see why, in the circumstances you describe, a DVD would be
preferable to an external a HD, neither are dependant on the internet, and I
do not have great confidence in a DVD which has been written to many times.
In my case, if the Internet does implode, and the world enters into the

2013-03-26 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Well, it's been an interesting discussion so far. It started out as to how to
back up the Legacy family file and then the questions arose as to where to
back up the files.

Seems clear to me that there should be at least 2 different geographic
locations where the backups are held: one can be your own house and the second
can be your relative's house which could be across town or across the country.
Doesn't matter as long as it is not in the same location otherwise if your
house burns down, all backups literally go up in flames. I think these
generally suffice for what I call short-term storage, defining short-term to
mean your own life span.

When it comes to long-term storage, meaning something that your grandchildren
will be able to access, the format of the media upon which the data is held
seems to be of most importance. Note that even the LDS keeps their master
storage as a physical hardcopy of microfilm. The do not rely solely on
magnetically read media such as hard drives or DVDs. Maybe they're scared of
the effects of EMP from a nuclear detonation or maybe they just know all these
short term methods degrade from bit rot, mostly likely effects of gamma rays
and who knows what else.

So, are we all storing our data just for short-term? Not discounting the
chance of any type of global disaster in the next 100 years, doesn't it seem
logical that the only SURE method of storage is actually a hardcopy of some
type. I would assume this to be most likely a printed set of reports or even a
bound manuscript or booklet. Hey, could even mean goatskins after all.

Since this conversation has turned to disaster now, how can paper
storage be considered 'safe'? Paper burns. Paper rots. Paper turns to
mush if you add enough water. Ink fades. Perhaps as genealogists we're

2013-03-26 Thread Laura Johnson
I do two different backup scenarios. I feel more comfortable with what
I am doing as I also run 2 major websites and I have countless hours
invested in those and all of their projects, databases, pictures, etc

The first scenario takes 2 external hard drives. On the first Friday of
every month, I ghost copy my external drive to a different external
drive. Then on that Saturday morning, I go to the safe deposit box and
put it in and remove the one from the previous month.

The second scenario is that I have two 32 gig thumb drives. I have all
major files backed up to them. If any major changes are made to these
file, I immediately back up to these thumb drives as well as well as to
my external drive. I carry these thumb drives with me - one in my purse
and one on my keychain.

I don't understand the point of a safety deposit box, as someone

For the future, there's a backup button that can be dragged onto your

what format the file was being save as when I close Legacy.jpg,
zip, txt, or whatever. I've never bothered to look for a '''Backup

Are you aware of where the backup files are being saved? I mean, just so
you know to also backup again from there to an external source.

[LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread elizabeth
Hi,

I couldn't find an answer I could understand in the archives so I am hoping
someone can help me here.

My computer crashed and I need to move legacy to my new computer. How do I
do it? Can I just copy/paste the 'Legacy folder' and the 'Legacy.exe file
in my download folder' to my flash drive and then copy/paste them to my new
computer?

I use the free version of Legacy.

Thanks!

Elizabeth

2013-03-24 Thread JLB
One just has to wonder how these things happen in this day and age of
free and virtually free backup options.

Do you have any Legacy BACKUPS? I mean the zip file that's created when
you click the BACKUP button.

If so, install Legacy on your new computer. Then click the RESTORE
option in Legacy and browse to your most recently dated zip file (on a
flash-drive or wherever you've got it by now.) Follow your nose through
the rest of it.

There's another dealie-do with the USR files but I'll save that for now.

I'm wondering what you mean by your 'download folder'. Without knowing
that I'm not sure what else is on your mind. Was EVERYTHING on one
computer? Did you lose EVERYTHING? If not, what DO you have to work with
Legacy-wise?

Well, in this day and age there are still some who don't know
everything..:-)

I didn't even know Legacy had a 'backup' button. I've never seen it so it
must be hidden somewhere.

I use a flash drive for backup for my computer information. I always just
copy/paste from my hard drive to the flash drive whenever I need to update
the things I have on my hard drive. As far as I know I have never 'lost'
anything by doing that. However I am not sure about moving Legacy to
another computer which is why I am asking.

I do have the main Legacy folder backed up on the flash drive (C:/Legacy).
I also copy/pasted the original legacy 'exe' file from my 'Downloads'
folder (C:/Downloads). This was the original .exe file I used to install
Legacy on my computer when I first began using the program. I have updated
the program now and then).

Can I just download the latest Legacy version of the free program from the
Legacy web site and then copy/paste the Legacy folder from my flash drive
into the C:/ of my new computer? Or won't that work?

Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread JLB
Yes, you should start with installing the latest version of Legacy.
Copying and pasting your backup Legacy folder over the top of the
installation is not the best idea but it will do in a pinch. That way
you'll preserve your user settings.

After you have it all on your new computer, you can install Legacy again
over the top of everything to make sure you have all the files that
should be there. I think that's how I'd do it anyway if I was where you are.

For the future, there's a backup button that can be dragged onto your
toolbar in Legacy. Right click on the toolbar and it will bring up a
menu of icons. Find the backup button and drag it up to the top and
click OK.

Or you can back up using the File menu. It says right there - Backup
Family File. This will create a zip file. Make a folder for them
wherever you want and you can customize the Location for them on the
Customize Backup screen.

In the future you can use Restore to bring back a zip file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread Kathy Meyer
That's what I would do Elizabeth. Download the free version of Legacy on
your new computer, then insert your flash drive with your Legacy file on
it; then just 'open' the file on the flash drive and 'save as' to your new
computer in whatever file/folder you like. Whenever you close Legacy, it
should prompt you to backup your files; if it doesn't, there is probably an
option that is toggled off. It still automatically saves everything that
you change so as long as you keep using that same file to make changes, you
probably didn't lose anything. It is more risky though, to try to remember
to copy everything the way you describe (although I may be missing
something in your description)

You can also use Dropbox for a 'backup' copy so even if your computer
crashes, there is always an offline copy. That's where I backup mine
anyway.

Good luck! Kathy
