Valerie,
If you want to turn on the option for Legacy to make a list of your
files, you need to go to Options > Customise 12.5. Click the button and
then go to the Messages tab at the bottom and change the option there.

When you want to Open or Import a file, which option are you using -
"Select the file using the Windows dialog box" or "Have Legacy create
a list of files to choose from"?

Personally, I prefer to use the first one, but I think my files are
very well-organized and I usually know exactly where I want to look
for a particular file. I think it might be helpful to you to put all
your Gedcoms into one folder, then look at each one and decide what
you want to do with it.

I would also look at the other files - text documents, Word documents,
Excel spreadsheets and so on and make a list of them with a
description of what each one contains, then perhaps gather them into
one or two folders and make a note of where you saved them.

Once you know what's what and where it is you can have Legacy open
each Gedcom in turn (remember to use File>Import for Gedcoms) and
create a new file. When you are happy with the contents of the files
you can start to merge them. If I were you I would try and concentrate
on one particular branch of your family to start with and get that
organized before you move on.

Thanks for this Carolyn but I am in a huge MESS.

Some of you have tried to help me before but I am here now to FIX IT

I appear to have .ged’s everywhere. When I do a windows key .ged I get
9 full pages of various record types – please excuse me if I am not
using the correct terminology.

On these 9 pages I have the following:

GED file

Text documents

Microsoft word documents

Compressed (zipped) Folders

Microsoft Excel Worksheets

And some other odd “ things “

Some of these .ged’s do not appear in the list when you try and File –
Open but with File – import there are some there as well as some folders.

HELP please

Hi Valerie,

With the GEDCOM, download it to your home screen or a folder, then
IMPORT it as a new file in Legacy.

That way you can check it out before and if you  want to merge it with
another Legacy file.

Sorry I can't help you with DNA Painter, or the HR Pavilion, but Mrs
Google can answer most questions, she will often point you to a You
Tube video which IO find very helpful.

Good luck!

Re: [LegacyUG] Help please

2020-09-27 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
The new update of Legacy has added a new check for Duplicate Marriages.
Some of them will prove to be legitimate and some will not.

eg a couple may have married, divorced and then remarried.
Or you may have someone linked to RIN 0 more than once as you have
baptisms records that they had two children but don't know whether the
other parent was the same or not. Old baptism registers often just give
the father and you can't assume the same spouse given how many women
died in childbirth and their husbands remarried. And when they just give
the mother for several children - was the father the same person? I have
at least 5 valid duplicates in my file.
If you discover you have valid Duplicate Marriages, then mostly in the
future run Check/Repair with the checkbox re Duplicate Marriages
unchecked. Especially if you find you had duplicates that weren't valid,
periodically run it with that Checkbox checked.

In your case you have two Unknown-Unknown relationships. You will likely
find that they have no other information and you should simply unlink
the child they are linked to and get rid of them.
You find them by going to View > Marriage List and finding the Marriages
with MRINs 17923 and 10978
Select them one at a time and see who they are connected to. If they're
connected to no-one, just unlink.
If they actually have marriage information then you'll need to re-find
one of the names. They may have been lost in an import or a merge.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-25 Thread Hannigan Family Research
I would go one step further - save the one you think you have been
working on to a new name (or just check the 'modified' date in the file)
and then check the other file for merging any data that is different
between the two. That way, if you have been updating two different
files, you have the updates from both files in one file and don't loose
valuable data.

Lesson learned the hard way.

Wow, that makes sense, also, Brian. Let me just say a huge thanks to all
who helped me on this. Although I am not certain which of the possible ways
the "stray" file got on my desktop, I have it all resolved now. Thankfully,
attempting to print a chart from Charting Companion yesterday made me aware
that there was even "such a thing" as more than one file. I am 99.9% (and
that's good enough for me) that the only time I opened that stray file was
when I input my FIL death info. Therefore, I went into Legacy and told it
to open the file from C:\Legacy\Data, and everything was there EXCEPT my
FIL death info. I made sure that C:\Legacy\Data is set as the default
location for my family file. With that file open, I re-input the FIL info.
I chose to backup to .zip, as I always do when exiting. I then deleted the

Your explanation is helping me "get there" in my understanding. Here is the way
I described the "two ways to access" in an earlier post here:

> It almost seems to me like there are two ways to access Legacy on my laptop:

> it was there).

The one I refer to as having gotten there without my knowledge is not a
shortcut. And I do believe it got there as you describe here.

Through the years, I always opened Legacy by clicking on my desktop shortcut
(what I call the Legacy Icon) to the program. I have opened it many times
through the time I wasn't doing active research, to reference something mainly,
and within the last three years to add the death information about three of our
parents. It always saved on the fly, as I exited, and I additionally chose to
Backup as I exited, when given the choice, and that's when I back up to a zip
file, stored in My Documents, but I have never used any of those zip files. It
always opened up with everything having been saved, until I apparently
inadvertently opened it from that "stray" copy of the file.

Once I get the right one open (which I expect will be correct except for my FIL
death information, which I can easily re-input), do I understand correctly that
I should double check to make sure the family file is being saved in
C:\Legacy\Data and then is it safe to delete that one I refer to as "stray"
(the one that says familytreewip.fdb)?

You probably don't have two installations of Legacy, just two copies of
your Family File. If you double-click on a Family File in Windows
Explorer or on the Desktop Legacy will open and show that file. You
could have several copies of the same Family File stored in different
places and double-clicking any of them would open the program with that
particular copy of the file showing. When you are working on the file,
the data you enter will be automatically saved to that same file,
wherever it is saved.

You have used several different terms for what is stored on your
desktop. What you are seeing could be a Family File, could be a folder
containing a Family File (I don't think it is), or could be a shortcut
to a Family File which is stored somewhere else on your computer. If it
was a shortcut the icon would include a little curved arrow.

It is most likely a copy of your Family File. A likely way it ended up
on your desktop is that you maybe had some computer trouble at some time
and someone (you or a helper) copied your family file to the desktop so
it would be "safe" and not get removed while work was being done to fix
your computer.

Back a few years when you were regularly using Legacy, how did you open
the program and your Family File? I expect you either opened the Legacy
program and your Family File was loaded automatically, or you located
the Family File and double-clicked on it. That's fine! But if at some
time recently you opened the program by double-clicking on a Family File
stored on your desktop, Legacy might have "remembered" that and opened
the same file next time. That depends on how your options are set up,
but many people have Legacy set up to automatically load the last Family
File they worked on.

I hope this clarifies the situation for you.

So, asking a simplistic basic question here, as I try to figure out how this
happened, and before I take my nervous self to the computer this morning to try
to "fix" this: Does it appear that I in effect have two installations of Legacy
on my computer (one that I access through the Legacy icon, the one I THOUGHT I
always used), and the other that somehow showed up as a link on my desktop that
I must have used to access the program at least once, like three days ago when
I input my FIL information). Because if it's just two ways to access the same
program, why wouldn't it save all the data, no matter which location I accessed
the program from?

Thank you, Cathy. Good information. No, I have never unzipped one of those back

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread Cathy Pinner
Barbara,

One way to check whether any recent data has been added to the file in
Legacy\Data is to do a search on the modified Date
Search - Find - Detailed Search Tab
Individual - Modified Date - after - [enter your date here]
Apart from the people you've been looking at to see what is going on, if
you've exited them with Save rather than Cancel, this will show if
you've been using this file to add data in the last couple of years.

You can do the same search on the file in the Desktop Folder.

If apart from this week everyone changed are in the same file, then I'd
use that and just re-add your sad losses.

If you can avoid even an Intellishare merge, you'll save time.

One way the file may have got on the desktop is that you unzipped one of
your backup files.
The proper way to access a backup is to use Legacy - File - Restore.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread R G Strong-genes
Barbara,
With Legacy open you can find out where your file is stored. Open the file menu
and at the bottom it will show a list of recently opened files and their path.
You can also open the About Legacy and the General tab and it will also under
file information it will show the Family File Folder and the Legacy Folder for
the file that is open. To set the Default location of family files go to
Options then goto the Locations tab and you can set the locations on that
screen.

Once you have the correct file be it the one on the desktop or the file in the
data folder you can do either:
If it is the one on the desktop then do File> Save Family File as and save it
to your Data folder with a new name or the same name.
If it is the one in the data folder then you are ok. If this file is current
then you are done and can delete the one on the desktop. If not then you can do
the merge as I instructed in the previous email. If you don’t want to merge
then you may have to re enter the data.

Go to Options-Customize

Choose Locations Tab

Next Look at the Default Location of family files

THAT is where to file you are using should be located.

This if from Legacy 7.5 (which I believe is the same as in Version 6.0)

Move the most up to date file to that location using file manager.

Good luck

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread R G Strong-genes
Barbara,
Is the one on the desktop a folder or is it a link to your data folder? If
it actually a folder with just the familytreewip.fdb and user files
associated with that family file and it has the most current file
information then you can just copy all those files to your Data folder for
Legacy. Then open legacy and search for the file you want to open. Then
check your Legacy options and specify how you want to open legacy. It is
probably set to open the last file opened. When you are working on Legacy
the changes are always in the file you are working on where ever it is
located. So when it closes if it doesn't ask for a backup it will be the
same folder that you opened it from, if you happen to have that file in a
different folder and open it from that folder you will not see the changes
as they are actually in a different file. When you back up a file either by
requesting a backup or when you close and it asks for one make sure the path
is where you want it before you click save. The newer versions actually
append the date and time to the backup so if you have several with the same
file name you will know which is the latest backup. It is always best to
keep your working family files in the same location so you know where your
up to date files are. If you need to store them on another drive then I
would recommend just saving the backup file of it on another drive and when
you want to work on it then you can restore the family file to your working
directory. I use google drive and only store my backups to that drive. I
also store a copy of the legacy installation file, registration file, and
user files for Legacy in there own folders on the google drive. I have both
Legacy 7.5 and 8 on my computer so I have a folder for each version on the
google drive for the corresponding programs.

If you have different updates to your family file in more than one folder
and you want to get them all into one file and they are copies from the same
family file then you should be able to use the intellishare options under
the find duplicates merge function. Open the oldest file and merge the
changed files into it.

from the help file:

Here is how IntelliShare works:

Form a research group of two or more people. (Each must be using Legacy.)
One person in the group is designated as the "Keeper of the Records" (Keeper
for short). This person keeps the master Family File. Legacy automatically
marks all the records in the Master Family File with a serial number that
uniquely identifies each individual. The Keeper now sends a copy of the
Family File to all the other people participating in the group.

Any or all members of the group can make changes to existing records, delete
or unlink records, or add new records to the family file. The Keeper can
also make changes and additions to the master file.

After an agreed upon interval of time, all members of the group return a
copy of the family file to the Keeper for merging and reconciliation.

The Keeper then follows this procedure:

Import all copies of the family file into the master copy (after making a
backup of course).

Press the Merge button and choose Find Duplicates.

>From the Merge Options window, click on the Special Searches tab and choose
the IntelliShare option.

Press the Continue button in the upper right corner of the Merge Options
window. Legacy searches for all records with matching IntelliShare values
and automatically merges those that have exactly the same information. At
the end of this process Legacy displays the records where one or more
persons have made changes. Legacy also looks at all surrounding links when
deciding to merge. If the parents, spouses or children are different in any
way, the two individuals are displayed along with a message describing the
situation. All these messages are also saved in a file called MERGE.LOG.
Legacy offers to display this file at the end of the merge process.

The only records the Keeper has to look at and merge together are the ones
that have been changed by someone in the group.

At the end of the merge process, a list of any newly added individuals is
displayed.

After the merge is complete, the Keeper sends a new copy of the family file
back to the other group members for more changes and additions.

Legacy's IntelliShare greatly reduces the drudgery involved when going
through the typical match-merge process needed to combine two or more files.

hope this helps,

Russ

[LegacyUG] Help, please

2016-01-24 Thread Barbara Ford

I have been using Legacy for years, and although still using version 6.0,
because I haven't done any serious research work since I was using that
version, I thought I was very "on" to how the backups work. In my mind, there
is an "on the fly" backup that puts data in C:\Legacy\Data\familytreewip.fdb
(with familytreewip being the "name" of my data). Then when I exit the program,
when it prompts me to back up, I also do that, and that is a zip file that I
keep in my documents folder. In the last three years, while I have not been
actively involved in research, we have lost three of our parents, and I have
updated Legacy with all that information. Today I have discovered that the data
has been going to different places (do not understand how that could have
happened). I discovered it (and maybe this will help with troubleshooting) when
I tried to use Legacy Charting Companion and it wasn't bringing in the death
information from Legacy, just posted a couple of days ago. I have now figured
out that there is a familytreewip.fdb folder on my desktop. Some of the data I
have entered in the last three years is there (visible when I open Legacy from
that file), and when I go to C:\Legacy\Data\familytreewip.fdb, the most recent
data is NOT there (and therefore not coming in to Charting Companion). Once I
open Legacy from one location or the other, it opens it back up from there the
next time I open Legacy. So, now there is one "version" of Legacy that has
recent death information, and then the one out on C:\Legacy has data updated
two years ago. I do not know what to do, and right after the death of my
father-in-law is NOT a good time for me to realize something is wrong. Mainly,
I don't know how to bring it together, and I don't know how to tell where it is
actually going when I exit NOW. I do periodically copy the contents of
c:\Legacy\Data to an external hard drive, and I have done that fairly recently.
But even if I open the Legacy program from there, and discover that the only
thing I have to re-input is my father-in-law's death information, I'm so
confused now about where it all goes when I exit. I guess my main confusion is
why it is sometimes going to the desktop file (and why is it even there?) and
not to C:\Legacy. I am so sorry to be so unclear, but can anyone help me? I'm
not so concerned about the Charting Companion--that's just what helped me
discover that data is not going where I thought it was, when exiting.

The Help file in Legacy is more comprehensive than the printed manual
(printing and shipping costs go up as a book gets bigger ) and
updated regularly.

If you can't find something in the manual, try the Help file .
Every window in Legacy has a Help button that goes right to the topic
for that feature.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help, please

2013-12-22 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
John,

When on the family view page for Fran and Dennis,
Right click on the children to bring up the Edit Children dialog, select
one daughter, in the relationship to Father and Mother drop down boxes
enter Biological.

Then go to the family view for Fran and Jim, right click on the children
and in the Relationship to Father and Mother enter Adopted for the Father
and Biological for the Mother.

Ensure that the marriage date for Fran and Jim is after the date for Fran
and Dennis, Highlight Fran and right click on her spouses and make sure
that they are sorted by date.

That should give you what you are looking for.

Hope that helps,

Jay

Basically, the girls need to have two sets of parents

a) Fran + Denis, and
b) Fran + Jim

For the first set of parents, the girls would be the natural, biological
children. So far so good! This is normal stuff.

Now, when Fran remarries Jim, she gets a second spouse and the girls are still
Frans' natural children, but they need to be assigned Jim as another father and
their status set as Adopted.

To do this you need Fran + Jim as the Family. Then, Link an existing child to
the family. Select one of the girls. Ignore the warning about the child being a
member of another family. Repeat for the second girl.

Get both girls linked to Fran + Jim, then open up the Children's Settings. Set
the Relationship to Father to Adopted. Your only problem after that, should be
whether and how to record any Surname change for the girls.

[LegacyUG] Help, please

2013-12-22 Thread John H Stokes
Hi, Folks,

After spending hours with the Legacy User Manual, Legacy help files, Legacy
tutorials, and searching online, I'm no closer to satisfaction than when I
began. Can you help?

The sequence of events is that after Fran's husband (Dennis) died, my brother
(Jim) married Fran and legally adopted her 2 daughters.

I'm hoping that you can tell me the best way to show Dennis as Fran's first
husband and father of the girls, and then show Jim as the girls adoptive Father
in Legacy 8.

So far, my efforts in entering this data have been disappointing and
frustrating, and charts have been a complete disaster.

Thanks a bunch for any assistance,

John
