Re: [LegacyUG] Mail addresses compromised?

2016-07-01 Thread CE WOOD
This is for outlook.com, not Office Outlook.

When you are on the "Inbox" page, with all your messages showing, there is a
brown bar above them.

Open the hacked email.
The brown bar now contains New, Reply (with a down arrow), Delete, Archive,
Junk (with a down arrow), etc.

Click on the down arrow next to Junk.

The drop down menu includes Junk, Phishing scam, My friend's been hacked.

Click on My friend's been hacked!

I think outlook.com then searches the detailed email header (which you don't
see) and finds the problem. It then blocks headers with those details.

And check the "To{:" address.

If the "To:" address is the list, then it came through the list, if not, it
was sent to your provate e-mail address.

I only received one3, and it was to my personal address, and did not come

Without making this list or a user moderated there is no way to prevent
a subscriber from replying sending a message to the list to continue the

messages. I and others have tried to tell all of you that the list is
not at fault but the explanations are being ignored.

This is the first I've heard of it - I've not received any spam beyond
the "normal" ones I get each week.

Someone's email account may have been hijacked. One of the latest
tricks is to hijack an account and pick an email address from the
address book. then they send the email using the person's name and the
stolen email address, so they really don't match.

2. Legitimate mail from our list servers will always have the list as the

have examined the headers on the bogus messages. They have a reply to
address which is not the list and is probably the spammer.
Anyone replying will become a victim of other spammers since he will harvest

In Outlook (& maybe others) you can set a rule (right click on
message) to send all of these to trash/deleted items. Still
receive them, but do not have to "manage" them.

Those who are not seeing it are having it eliminated by better spam filters,

their address book and "stolen" the email addresses. That malware has
taken *our* address to show as the "from" line with the person's name.

I've seen this many times - in fact, one of my personal email accounts
was hijacked several years ago - I had only three email addresses in

I agree with Leon - change your email passwords before your personal

And if I stole the email address wood...@msn.com and spoofed it to send a
million spam emails, what could you do to stop it? As has been pointed out, a
list subscriber has been hacked and the legacyusergr...@legacuusers.com address
is being used in just such a manner. There is absolutely NOTHING that Legacy
or Millenia can do about something that does not originate from them or go
through their servers.

If it's a spooked address, no, you can't fix it unless you can find a way of
making the spammer stop using it.

I have one spammer who sends me (and [resumably other people) mail from my
own address. Fortunately it is a forwarding address, so one that I never send
mail FROM, and though I can't stop the messages from coming, I can
automatically delete them when mu mail is opened.

I received one.

The only reason I read it was that the subject was the same as that of
another mailing list I belong to.

Some have mentioned using Gmail, but that would entail using the clunky Gmail

Someone's email account may have been hijacked. One of the latest
tricks is to hijack an account and pick an email address from the
address book. then they send the email using the person's name and the

I would recommend to anyone having spam problems set up a gmail account and
they will take this problem away!

Re: [LegacyUG] Mail addresses compromised?

2016-06-21 Thread CE WOOD
For anyone using outlook.com, you don't have to mark it as spam:

Click on the email.
Click on the down arrow beside Junk
Click on "My friend's been hacked!"

You may get several more that are already in the pipeline, but after that (I
deleted 2076) you should get no more.

Legitimate emails from legacyusergroup still come through.

Yes, I just got 50. It’s an ad for warranties on home equipment. I can’t
block the sender, because the sender is legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com
(reads as ‘ThankYou’). The internal links go to tr.im. According to whois.net,

How? The messages are NOT coming from the Legacy mail server. They're coming
elsewhere and being made to look as though they're coming from Legacy.

If I was actually receiving the messages, I would set up a filter that would
automatically delete them as they arrived. Fortunately, Gmail is identifying
them as spam and dumping them. All other messages are arriving in my Tbird
reader as I would expect. I just need to go directly into Gmail every now and
then and clean up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mail addresses compromised?

2016-06-21 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
There probably is nothing that Legacy can do about it. The problem is not on
their mail list server but rather it’s the bad person that is spoofing the
“From” address in the mail header and most likely has found a server somewhere
that is set up as an open-relay. This is how they can dump 10 million emails in
a single day. Eventually it goes away in a day or two or three. It’s only a
problem for those people who purchased discount keyboards that lack a delete
key. If you’d like, I can send you an email that appears to be from Bill Gates
at Microsoft and indicates that you just won $10 million in the Lottery.

I think I am going to sign out of this user group for now.  It is a little too
