Thank you Cathy.

I put all of my media files from Dropbox into one default media folder and now
have 51 missing photos/documents, which I will work on. I appreciate the
support.

Carol,

If all the media is in one folder then the option you say has
disappeared is actually still there in the Media Relinker.
When you say - yes that's the image that was missing - there's two
buttons you can click.
One is just for that particular image, the second is for that image and
any others missing in that folder.

Re changing computers. If the path to the media actually reads [Default
Media Folder]\ when you look at View - Master
Lists - Media Folders then all you need to do to re-attach the media is
change Options-Customise 6.2 to the new location.
[Default Media Folder]\ is the code introduced in Legacy 8 for the path
in Option 6.2
If that isn't what is showing (you can also see this at 6.2 under the
"View Current List of Media Folders" button) then you can use Search -
Search and Replace on Media folders to replace the path you enter at 6.2
with [Default Media Folder]\

Once that is done, your problems will be over if you only add media to
that one folder or sub-folders of it.

Michelle,

I just tried the media relinker on just the J drive, and all but 36
files were retrieved. The only problem is when I go to another
computer, the flash drive port might not be named J. At the FHL they
will give me many, many drives to search, and I have to delete all but
the drive that my flash drive happens to be inserted into on that
particular computer.

It used to be so easy. Once I relinked one photo, Legacy knew the
source for all of the photos. Can that option be restored? I think
it disappeared with version 9.

Hi Cathy

Thank you for that information. At the moment I am still using Legacy 8,
but as soon as my problem is resolved I will purchase Legacy 9.

I have taken onboard what you and other Legacy users have suggested and
now seem to have solved my problem.

I clicked on Media Gallery and selected the picture frame below. I then
checked how many copies of each family member I had saved and noticed
that some of them had up to 10 of the same jpg photo. I removed all but
1 and I am now not receiving the message which told me that I had 16
missing media files.

thank you all for your help.

Then you can find and relink them manually.
This is necessary if you have renamed the files outside of Legacy.

However, the problem may be that the combined path and filename are

If you do move it, you have to do it properly using the Properties

The latest update to Legacy 8 - build 601 and to Legacy 9 include a
check for media filenames (path plus the actual name) tat are too
long. See File - File Maintenance - Check/Repair.

Correct this and after re-linking you may have no further problem.

Hi Howland,

The latest build is 414. Must be time to recheck the internet. If you
click the Updates header on the Home Tab you get a dialogue where you
can check.
Or in the Options on the Home Tab - choose Check the internet now.
It sounds as if you haven't closed down for some time as restarting
Legacy usually shows up the new build.

Re the pics problem.
Note in the Media Relinker there is a checkbox with the option to
unlink missing media files.

This will solve your problem if you are sure you have replaced the
files with different copies.

Jenny:

Instead of letting Legacy look for the missing files navigate to each
one yourself and when Legacy says something like "original file was xxx,
do you want to use this one which is yyy?" you tell it you do. Legacy
will then stop looking for the original filename and recognize the new
filename.

That is what I expected to happen and did happen on the other twenty
missing files when I started the media file check yesterday. I clicked on the
correct picture but it showed the picture as a new picture with no caption,
date, description or file ID so I filled in the information and continued with
the other five files of interest. The rest of the files were fixed as you
said. So I now get those six as still missing but they are not.

Instead of letting Legacy look for the missing files navigate to each
one yourself and when Legacy says something like "original file was xxx,
do you want to use this one which is yyy?" you tell it you do. Legacy
will then stop looking for the original filename and recognize the new
filename.

It could be that the media files were referenced in multiple places. I came
across a situation today in 7.5, where I'd renamed an image file. Checking
revealed one reference, so I changed that one and ran the error report again and
still had one reference to a missing image.

So, worth running the report until there are no errors!

Is it possible that there is a bug here? The checking process constructing a
list of files and all their references and not bothering to check all the
references of a file once it has been identified as missing.

[LegacyUG] Missing Media Files

2014-04-23 Thread Howlanddavisii

I recently printed a list of missing media files and corrected them.
However apparently for five of them I must have given different file names
because I still get a list showing those five. Is there a way to tell Legacy
8.0 Family Tree that those old file names are no longer good and should be
deleted so the Missing Media list shows no files missing?
I have version 8.0.0.352 and it says that that is the latest build.

Hi Dave,

If the relinker isn't finding them, I think you'll find they're named
differently in some slight way - or you aren't making a new list. Did
you check the missing files list to see how they were named?

I think all the files may have been missing for some time and I wasn't aware of
it until I ran the relinker in V8. Since then, I have been reacquiring the
missing census images and putting back where they used to be. Unfortunately,
when I run the relinker after restoring the census images, it does not pick
them up -- so I must link them all manually.

Thanks, Cathy.

Unfortunately, many of my census images have disappeared entirely since
upgrading to V8. I don't blame V8 for this, however. More than likely it has
been grandchildren playing games on my computer. Anyway, it is a long and slow
process to reacquire the images and link them appropriately again.

Hi Dave,

You shouldn't need to be relinking files manually if by that you mean that you
add them again. That would only work if you removed the old broken link and
then made the new one - or do you mean you are using the dialogue from the
broken link and the option to find the file yourself? That really is the long
way to go about fixing media links.

Provided the media hasn't been renamed and is on the computer, Legacy can find
it with the Media Relinker Tool. Where you have more than one copy of the same
media, you need to tell Legacy which one to use.
It may be slow but it is certain. If when you identify a correct file and use
the option to link to this and others in the same folder, you don't need to do
them one by one.

It sounds as if you have moved the media from where it was for Legacy
7 to sub-folders of the new default Media Folder at Documents/Legacy Family
Tree/Media.

One possibility
Since this is a user folder, if you log on to your computer with different
logons, the media will only be there for the logon you were using when you
copied it. I know some people have an Administrator logon and a User without
Admin rights logon. If that's the case you need to keep your media and your
Legacy data outside of the user files so that both logons can access it. The
settings files:
Documents/Legacy Family Tree/_AppData cannot be moved so to have the same
settings you'd need to copy it. Otherwise make sure you only use Legacy when
logged in from the same user name.

Second possiblity
Is it possible that you are opening different copies of your family file each
day? You might check that you only have one copy of each family file you use
and that any other copy has a distinctive name.
If you only use one file, as I do for my own genealogy, you can set the option
at Options > Customise 1.2 to always open the last used file. Otherwise set
this to always open your main family file.

I can't think of anything else that would make media files or their links
disappear.

I think that if one were to run the "Test all Multimedia Paths" and make sure
there is a check mark in the "Make a list of all missing files", then that list
will state specifically from where Legacy has linked the missing file. For
example, it might say Event, Source, or whatever.

The missing file might not be linked directly to the person but is linked to
one of their events or to a source that is linked to that person.

Pictures for the person's events do not appear directly in their photo gallery
but on the right of the thumbnails you will see Individual with a down arrow,
click that and you will see a list of other categories (events). If there is an
asterisk * beside that category there are pictures linked to that category.
Select it and you will see the media linked to the category.

For media linked to the person's sources you will have to open their source
list. Sources with pictures will have an asterisk in the picture tab label.
Select the tab to see the pictures.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing media files

2013-03-28 Thread Brian/Support
The missing file might not be linked directly to the person but is
linked to one of their events or to a source that is linked to that person.

Pictures for the person's events do not appear directly in their photo
gallery but on the right of the thumbnails you will see Individual with
a down arrow, click that and you will see a list of other categories
(events). If there is an asterisk * beside that category there are
pictures linked to that category. Select it and you will see the media
linked to the category.

For media linked to the person's sources you will have to open their
source list. Sources with pictures will have an asterisk in the picture
tab label. Select the tab to see the pictures.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing media files

2013-03-28 Thread R G Strong-genes
Louise,
Have you also checked to see if any of those files were attached to sources? I
have had this happened before where it says a media file is missing from a
person and I could not find it until I checked the source and source detail
that was attached to them. Also the error message usually pinpoints exactly
where it is missing from.

I recently changed computers. When I reinstalled Legacy, the linkages to my
Multimedia files were missing. I have been able to re-establish linkages for
all but 2 files. The first one was a .bmp file that I could not find anywhere
in my C; drive. I decided to download the document again, which I did. It came
in as a.jpg file. I saved it and linked it to the person's file and deleted the
.bmp file. I am still getting the message that I have a missing Multimedia file.

In the other instance, it is a .jpg file that I can not find on my C: drive
either. When I go to that person's file, the picture icon is not highlighted
and there are no documents liked to that person, but it is still listed on the
missing Multimedia files report.

Can anyone give me guidance on how to fix these files?

Have you run a Check/Repair (under File/File Maintenance)? If not, try that.
