Re: [LegacyUG] Print Out of Customize parameters
Keep in mind that the usr files and other customization files in the Legacy installation folder are independent of any specific family file, and they are small. The Legacy backup function is for an individual family file, zipping the large .fdb file and a few related files into a compact version. It seems reasonable to me to rely on our own normal computer backup schemes to backup all these files, just as we do for our non-Legacy documents. However, the original request of a readable record of our customizations also seems reasonable. So often we see Support advising that someone with a problem should reset their options to the default settings. If that fixes the problem, then restoring a settings file is not helpful when you want to re-establish your custom conditions. If the various customization files were understandable in a text editor, we could look at them and see what we had been using. (Too bad they don’t use XML.) But they are not, so having an option to print out a friendly description would be nice. I was having a problem once and I had to reinstall Legacy to solve it. I believe the problem was with my legacy.usr file. Anyway it would still be nice to have a printout (I know it is low tech but I will soon forget what file holds the settings and where I put it) The printout would give me someplace to start and I could step through the individual settings until I found the culprit. You could simply make screen shots of the customize settings and print those. Ltools also has an option to save all the usr files so that they can be restored or moved to another computer. Brian. I am the one who brought up this subject, of course there may well have been others who mentioned this earlier. You have made a very good point, why doesn't Legacy back up this file? But being a older guy, and somewhat old fashioned, there are times when I do like a Print Out. Perhaps Legacy could give us a PDF file of all the settings in the Customize Screen settings. This has the advantage of being able store that print out in a file folder; somewhere. Also if you have a complete computer 'crash' the print out will not be lost. Yes, you could put that file of a 'Flash Drive'; and this is a good idea, as long as you don't lose that Flash Drive., I have a 'dickens' of a time keeping control of all of my Flash Drives. John, It won't help you very much, but the colour schemes for Legacy are contained in a folder called Colour Schemes in the Legacy folder. The files have the extension .lcs and can be opened in any text editor. Naturally if you haven't named and saved your colours then your scheme will not be there. You can open the file in Notepad. --- Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ GOONS #5307 John Gregson jfgreg...@shaw.ca wrote: Brian. Of course not. It doesn't matter where you back up to. But if you back up the whole Legacy folder /somewhere/ you'll have all your USR files to copy back if you need them. As it exists right now, there are options to backup not only the family data file but also Research Guidance files, IGI Search Results, Focus Group settings, and FamilySearch link files. Come on now, why won't Legacy back up its own settings? Seems like a major oversight. [LegacyUG] Print Out of Customize parameters
In Legacy deluxe 7.5.0.219 When you go to Options / Customize; there are many parameters that can be changed. Having a Print Out of all the options that you have selected would be most useful in case of a computer crash or other calamity. Is there any way to generate such a document? Re: [LegacyUG] Print Out of Customize parameters
It's not really necessary to print out the options you've chosen. You can save and reload them using the Save and Load buttons under Report Settings, lower right hand corner. - JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://jlog.jgen.ws/ On 4/5/2013 2:46 PM, Mike Fry wrote: On 2013/04/05 23:21, John Gregson wrote: Is there any way to generate such a document? Re: [LegacyUG] Print Out of Customize parameters
Ok, that was dumb. You weren't asking about reports but Customize options. Sorry. - JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://jlog.jgen.ws/ On 4/5/2013 2:59 PM, JLB wrote: It's not really necessary to print out the options you've chosen. Re: [LegacyUG] Print Out of Customize parameters
The customization options you choose using Options Customize are stored in the Legacy.usr file. If you save a copy of that file somewhere outside of the Legacy Folder you can restore the settings by moving the copy back into the Legacy program folder.
