To Jerry of http://www.merriamfamilytree.org/ (in which I am
interested off the record if you care to write direct).

No, I am using gmail with Chrome and not downloading to my computer as
this way it is easier to not clog up all my computer with Legacy
postings!

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-25 Thread Ronald Bernier
Marg,
You will find a copy of the sent mail in the sent Mai folder and the all mail
folder. If it is a message that you received, then there would be a copy in
you inbox and all mail folder.

Since the discussion of an email program is off topic and not related to the
use of Legacy, this will be my last post on this subject.

Elizabeth,

It is makes no difference if you have the "fancier" version (Google Apps) or
the standard gmail account. You do not actually have two copies of your email.
Don't forget, Google mail does not support true folders. When you say you
have a copy in your sent mail - "sent mail" is strictly a label, not a folder.
If you look at your Google "folders", you will see that no matter what label an
email has -i.e. "Inbox" "Legacy" (a label that I created), "Sent Mail", etc,
you will see a copy in that designated "folder", but you will also see a copy
in the "All Mail" folder. Again, you do not actually have two copies of the
email. You have one copy with two labels.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-25 Thread Marg Strong
There is an option to choose "classic" I think it's called. I tried the new
version and hated it, so switched back to classic. It doesn't look quite the
same, but better than the new one. I can't remember, but it was probably at the
top under options and settings? Anyhow, I didn't have to unsubscribe and
resubscribe.

They also asked me if I wanted to enter info on why I didn't like the new
version, which I happily told them.

Sorry, this is off topic but there is so little I can offer anyone at this
point that I hope this helps. I think it did put the mail I sent in a "sent"
folder, but I didn't use it more than a couple of days.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-25 Thread Jerry
Hi Elizabeth. Sorry, if I didn't notice, but do you read your email
directly on the GMail website or with a client-based product? If you
use a client-based product such as Thunderbird, Outlook, etc., you can
set your email up as IMAP or POP. Basically, if you use POP, you will
not have the ALL MAIL folder that some of the users are talking about.
Only the IMAP protocol will give that to you, and IMAP is designed to
sync all your client-based folders with GMail's website.

But I would not be afraid to UN-SUBSCRIBE and then RE-SUBSCRIBE, if
necessary to get rid of that duplication problem. If you have that
other pesky problem when re-subscribing, I believe I can show you
exactly what to do to resolve it, 9 times out of 10 or better, without
having to contact support.

I set up my gmail in Outlook. I don't have an All Mail folder. You can
customize the folders on the server so that on your computer you have the
"normal" configuration. I have an inbox and a sent folder but no all mail.

RE: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-25 Thread Ronald Bernier

My gmail account does put sent mail into a sent folder, but it is the classic
version. They are offering a switch to a "fancier" version which I've declined,
but they warn that the time is coming when we will all have to switch. I wonder

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-24 Thread Brian/Support
Elizabeth,

I "think" what you are seeing as the second copy is the one in your sent
mail plus the returned email from the list when it distributes your
message. Most email programs put sent mail into a separate folder so it
does not show in the inbox. Gmail does not seem to segregate sent and
incoming messages.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-22 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Elizabeth,

Have you checked the filters in your email program/service to make
sure that one of them isn't inadvertently making a copy?  I know
you're using Gmail - check your filters on the web interface - and if
you're also using an email program on your computer* check for
filters/rules there too.

* I usually use Thunderbird to download the mail to my computer, but
am working from a different machine today so am on the web. Other
email programs include Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus. They all do
filters/rules, the name depends on the program.

Hope this helps.  :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicated emails

2012-02-22 Thread Jerry
I'm sure there is no reason for you to just live with it. There has to
be an explanation. But how did you try to stop it? You did not
elaborate. There could possibly be something in your settings like send
yourself a cc of your messages. But if it is nothing like that, I think
I would UN-SUBSCRIBE to the Legacy lists and re-subscribe all over
again. But watch for that error that often occurs when you try to click
on the URL in Legacy's welcoming email. If there is that pesky embedded
space, you might have to copy and paste their entire address into your
browser to fully complete your membership in the lists.
