I see a message from you was received on 26 Apr and is in the queue to be

You should hear back from someone fairly quickly. During the first part of the

Hi Brian,

I sent in a bug report last evening but have not heard anything so far.

Prior to the latest update, when I ran the set relationships it worked fine.

I have nearly 69,000 people in my program, I have the set selationships set at
10 Closest relationships and 0 closest paths, this will result in over 100,000
checked paths. The counter would increase by 500 at a time and this process
would take approximately 5 minutes.

I have run the set relationships several times since the update was installed
yesterday, each time the program works properly until it reaches 3500, then it
stops, hangs or freezes, whatever yuo want to call it.

I just tried it again, it went to 3500 and stopped, I waited 20 minutes and it
was still at 3500, I clicked cancel and waited 2 minutes, nothing changed, I
clicked cancel again, this time I noticed at the top of the set relationships
window the following: (Not Responding).
I waited another 2 minutes then clicked cancel, after waiting another 2 minutes
I clicked the X box on the upper right side of the set relationships window.

A new popup window with End Program came up and I clicked the End now, this
closed my Legacy program.

Leo

RE: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-28 Thread CE Wood
Interesting how we humans do that:

My baby walked at nine months - MY baby walked at eight months!
My child read before kindergarten - MY child was reading at birth!
My genealogy has 10 million people - I may have "only" 1 million, but they all
are documented by original sources (the actual certificates).

My (whatever) is bigger/better/fancier/more expensive/less expensive/more
"green"/ ad infinitum than yours!

The "my method is right according to me, so yours MUST be wrong," is a belief
of those who are need the support of others because they really doubt their
method.

And so it goes. Legacy is great, when new builds don't ruin things that worked
fine before, because it is SO varied that almost every method can be
accommodated!

not intentional. And apologies to the group for the confusion.

You can think of it that way if you want. The developers are always
striving to correct anything users report wrong plus they will make
some improvements along the way.

You don't have to download them, but it is often best if you do.
Legacy is a real stable problem, but if you are worried about a new
version messing up your family data, that can be prevented by making
and faithful backups.

This is corrections and additions to the program. It is never required to do
the download each time. Some people wait a few days to see if it had new
problems ( not as often as in the past), or wait until the list of changes
gets too long, or affects what you use most. Each update includes ALL previous
ones, so a missed one doesn't matter in the long run.

Hello Graham, It is very easy to exceed 20,000 if you do an extended
family lines tree instead of a pure bloodline. Reg oh isn't genealogy
fun.

.

Reg, I will have to believe you. I guess each to his own, but direct
lines, rather than "twigs", are all that I'm interested in, otherwise
where do you draw the "extended line"...so to speak. If you extend
the thousands into millions and so on...then I guess we are all
related.

As I said though...2,000 is already above my 'varification' ability.

...and thanks Ron for your input.

I am new to Legacy, and this might seem like a silly question, but is this
"release build" like an upgrade which should be downloaded?

Hello Graham, It is very easy to exceed 20,000 if you do an extended family
lines tree instead of a pure bloodline. Reg oh isn't genealogy fun.

Re: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-27 Thread Ron Ferguson
Rich,

I don't think that they are any different from any other family, except that
their trees are more readily available. The number of descendants which one
has available depends on how many generations one goes back and which
non-direct line ancestors one wishes to include.

Status is not relevent. After around 10years research I have some 4000
"relatives" ie those with a connection to my family, no matter how distant.
Where very large files are likely to be more more common are with One-Name
studies, especially when many people are contributing their research.

In my view, many number counters simply download trees from, say Ancestry,
without checking each record to ensure its accuracy and present it as their
own work. To my mind this is not genealogy, and I certainly would not find
any satisfaction in doing this. A tree of 2000 well researched and
documented individuals is much more valuable historically, and to the family
involved.

So, Graham, I agree with you. You are missing nothing and probably have a
much superior tree than number crunchers. However, I am not suggesting that
all large trees may be defective, just many of them!

RE: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-27 Thread leo macdonald

It counts the number of paths between people. For a large file like
yours there are many many paths to check. With that many people try
letting the Set Relationships run for at least 5 minutes before deciding
it will not finish.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-27 Thread CE Wood
I have always needed to set relationships to 30 - 0 or else Legacy can't find
the closest direct relationship because there are so many other relationships
that are closer than the direct one. That is why, with 30,000 individuals, my
count has always been above 515,000. That's a lot more than 90,000.

I am assuming the new facility enables showing the closest direct relationship,
but that Legacy still has to plow through the others as before.

Since it essentially ties up my computer for several hours, I am hoping someone
else with the same degree of interrelationships, has advice.

2010-04-26 Thread Jack Earnshaw
It worked fine for me with the count going up to 9000, stalling for a few
seconds and then counting up to 24000 (about the number of names I have).

What was best of all though, was that 1/2 relationships are now shown in Family
View

I'll back you up on that one, Ron. From memory, the various methods of
causing the program to terminate, generate different commands within the
program. These then can cause termination of the program via different
code paths in the program, depending on how they have been coded. Thus,
it is quite possible for the Windows Close button (the red X in the top
right corner) to cause termination by the quickest possible route,
avoiding any actions that might work against that aim.

You'll have to take whatever Millennia says as gospel on this one. If
they say it doesn't matter how you terminate the program, then it
doesn't matter. Ken?

Sorry Brian, I can't.

It's just one of those things which I picked up when learning the ins and
outs of Windows years ago. However, I can assure you that this has also been
my experience over many years. I am regularly resizing, mainly after using
the Windows split screen, and whilst some programs seem to do the resizing
themselves most do not.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.38 - New General Release Build - 25 April 2010

2010-04-26 Thread leo macdonald

Thanks Ron,

That is probably what happened, when the Legacy program was hanging at 3500, I
waited for quite a while before trying to close, as the program was not
responding I had to use ctrl>alt>delete in order to close the program, then
when I reopened the Legacy program I had to resize the screen.

2010-04-26 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I’ve always believed that the Window gadget “X” makes the same calls as
“File/Exit”. Can you cite any reference to MS saying different.

Although this is not directly a Legacy issue, I can see where it might impact
the performance of the program.

Ron,

I spoke too soon. Set Relationships worked 4th time but I was on my 5th
Great-Grandmother.

It completes for either of my parents. It completes for myself if I change
defaults of 5 Blood and 2 Non-blood to 4 Blood.

Ron, I have 30,000 individuals but that counter went to 68,000 so not sure
what it counts.

Leo,

Standard Windows procedure when resizing a screen is to exit using File
Menu>Exit, this should ensure that the resizing sticks. Windows offers no
guarantees that exiting using the "X" will do this.

I have not found the Set Releationships to hang, but then I have not tried

My progra hangs at 3500, also since the upgrade the program open with a smaller
screen and each time I have to resize the screen.

After update to new build the Set Relationships hangs. Tried first with Closest
Direct-line and then tried with Closest Relationship. Both times it hangs at
27500 count.
