You could just put UNKNOWN in as the parents and add David Smith as
the son of the Unknowns.
Not the best way but it will work.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter the following.

2016-02-24 Thread R G Strong-genes
The best way would be to just add the father's surnames and leave the first
names and spouses blank or use privacy brackets ie [[this is the father of
John Smith]]. If you start putting initials in for N.N. no name then it is
very likely that some one else researching will see that and start looking
for someone with those initials. I have been there and done that! For the
life of me I could not find all those people with the surname of UNK who was
in my database from an import that had been done when I first started out!!
So for unknown information it is best to leave it blank or insert those
privacy brackets as that is what keeps them private and not published.

To create the cousin, go to John Smith and add father, and enter him with
just the Surname and then go to him and repeat. You are now at the
grandfathers screen. You should now see him with no spouse with one mail
child, now just click in the children list box to add another male child.
This is where privacy brackets come in handy to separate the first names ie
[[child1]] and [[child2]] which will pop up a warning that you can tell it
to ignore. Note this will put an * in the exceptions box near the bottom of
the screen once you have a name for them don't forget to edit that box to
correct the exception.
Now navigate down by going to the new child and adding another male child
for David's father. Go to his father now Add Child and link to existing
person David. You now have the cousins linked.

Then you use placeholders for their parents and grandparents.

Since it seems likely that their fathers, at least, had the surname of
Smith,
you enter something like N.N. Smith for the father of one, and Mrs N.N.
Smith

for his wife. And N.M. Smith for the parents of the other, and Mrs N.M./
Smith as his wife. And for the parents of those two smiths you put Grandpa
Smith and Grandma Smith.

And then, voila! David and Simon are cousins.

And when you do find the real names, you substitute them for the placeholder
names.

First cousins should have the same grand-parents. Since you don't have the
parents of either Simon or David, you won't have the grand-parents. Ergo: you
can not create a first cousin link out of thin air.

You can only connect them as cousins by entering their parents and
grandparents. Then the progam automatically works out the cousin connection.

If you don't know who the parents of grandparents were, you can either enter
someone as a "placeholder", or you can wait until you do know the names. But
you can't ENTER someone as a cousin iof someone else.

Hi June,

So you've got everyone entered into your database, but you haven't yet
linked Simon SMITH to his wife Hannah JONES?

With Simon in the spouse area in Family View, right-click in the wife's area
and then click on "Add a wife", and then in the next window that appears,
click on "Link to an EXISTING person". You'll then see the Name List, where
you can navigate to Hannah and select her.

Alternatively, you can right-click on Simon and select Add > Wife.

Or, via the menus, click on Add > Add Wife.

Or, via keyboard shortcuts, press AW (for Add Wife).

Whichever route you take, the key is to link to an existing person, instead

Hope this helps. :-)
