Hello to the group. Maybe you have to be as old as I am to be patient about new
software. I'd rather have it slow and right, than fast and buggy. Or maybe it's
the expert users (you know who you are) who are most eager? That sounds more
likely.

This is as good a time as any to say, we "less than technowhizzes" appreciate

SV: [LegacyUG] Legacy updates - FSFT does not connect to Legacy when combining the person i question

2013-08-27 Thread Helle T. Hirschmann
Charles.

Thanks.
I believe it is what I am doing - anyway I plan to keep going over my file and
with time both Legacy and FSFT will get more perfected cooperating and with
time I guess more relatives get on board.

I just wanted to tell the programmers on both programs what I experience.
And your answer also points out I am not alone.

Have a nice day.

Helle,

I had a similar or possibly the same problem. After downloading information
from FSFT into Legacy, the data did not appear in Legacy. However, I changed
focus by switching to either the spouse or one of the children and then
returned focus (Family View) back to the person I was working on, and all the
information appeared.

So, try downloading one piece of information. Go back to Legacy and change
focus in Family View and then back to the original person. Check to see if the
information, that you download from FSFT, has appeared.

Subject: SV: [LegacyUG] Legacy updates - FSFT does not connect to Legacy when

With the new update I have a different problem and I do not know if it is a
Legacy problem or a FSFT problem.

Working on a family some family members connect really well with FSFT and all
data is carrying over well.
Others I get to go to FSFT - combine a number of persons in a relationship:
parents and children.
Somehow it seems that the persons on FSFT are disconnected and do not carry
over to Legacy.

If I write down names and data of a possible spouse I sometimes can get the
marriage relationship to work and sometimes get the children too.
But I have to enter them into my Legacy file and then connect again.

I do not know if this has been discussed before, but I have not noticed any
subjects pointing that way.

Hope I am the only one.

Sometimes it takes awhile for the update info to show in Legacy. I've seen it

Hi Paula.

Yes “Sv.” Stands for ”svar” which in Danish is the word for reply. (Or rather
an answer to a question).
Wish there was an easier way for sorting – though sometimes I get surprised
with WHAT Outlook is sorting correctly in spite of differences in language and
subjects. J

I am so happy I know so much English/American as I do – it makes communication
across the World so much easier.

We know an elderly gentleman – he was born in Detroit in 1934 and taken to
Denmark for a brief visit - by his Danish father (his American mother died
during delivery of him) in 1939 to see his aging grandmother.
Then came the war (WWII) and they were not able to return to the US and now he
has found his one sister after total silence since just after the war… BUT he
cannot communicate with her– not directly anyway – but hurray for Google
translate and friends who DO know more English than he does by now.

If I may be of help finding places to look for sources – or even shortcuts let
me know. J

What I remember about FS is that they (FS) were not releasing the data
needed to be used by Legacy until some time later. Also I think that
certification belongs with FS. I don't know anything about Ancestral

I am tired of waiting for the ability to transfer my RM6 data to Legacy so am
converting my RM6 Master Research Database to a Legacy GEDCOM format using
"Ultra-Edit". I am using Search and Replace which works great except for some
reason Legacy doesn't use DESC for the Description variable.

Can you help me on this one?

Yes I am referring to Legacy's ability to link with FS Family Tree.  Maybe I
should have put my disappointment on the other legacy group - but they have
been silent lately and I do not have their email.

The basic Legacy program is wonderful and I cannot say enough good about it.
That is why I 'push' it at our family history center.

However, with the developers taking so long to upgrade (I do not care if it is
under 7.5 or 8 or 25 version)  so the program is compatible with FS - I am
having a hard time keeping everyone on board and not jumping the Legacy ship.
Me included.

I am also disappointed in the lack of communication to us the users on the
timeline for recertification for FS.  Why the secrecy?  How can we inform those
we help with the program when no info is ever given?  How is it Ancestral Quest
and Roots Magic can be on board and upgraded and Legacy gives no hint of even
noticing that FS is changing?

I guess my questions and lack of answers is the root of my disappointment.

Amen.

Those of us living in non-English speaking countries it is a major advantage
that Legacy is focusing on making it available in our languages – for free –
makes it the NUMBER 1 program for interacting with FS and making our finds
accessible to our relatives.

Saying so, I am very fluent in English – yes – but my own language adds just
that last little bit of understanding to my experience, making it more perfect.
In an imperfect world.

Who translated? Well, we the users did – for free – and got it for free.

There is another way of viewing this. A number of my genealogical friends have
dropped several programs (notably FTM in the lead) because of their frequent
updates - each one of them costing users. They've moved to Legacy because of
its relative stability.

I'm more than pleased with Legacy. Yes, it might be nice for a major release a
touch more often - but on the flip side, I have yet to have the responsiveness
of tech support etc. that I have with Legacy - and for free. Yes, we can ask
for more frequent major upgrades - but are you willing to bear the cost?

Many of us find a yearly upgrade - and its associated fees - a bit much to
swallow.

I have my wish list - and with time I have seen Legacy address much of it.
Having worked for a software company, I don't expect Legacy will ever address
all my wishes - but it sure does better than most at trying.

Cheers -

Jackie

Don,

Legacy 7.0 was released on May 1, 2008. Legacy 7.5 was released on January 30,
2010. I respectfully disagree that Legacy 7.5 was a major update. The biggest
item added to Legacy 7.5 was the ability to connect to New Family Search. It
was more than a year after the release of 7.5 that some users were able to
start connecting to New Family Search. Granted, this issue was not something
that Legacy had any control over, however, connecting to New Family Search is
the primary reason that Millennia touted 7.5 as a “major update” when in fact
it was anything but a major update. Yes, Legacy has had interim updates –
mostly to fix bugs, and they have added some new features, but then there isn’t
a software in existence that doesn’t release interim bug fixes and minor new
features during the lifespan of a version.

Bottom line, version 8 will be released when it is released – nevertheless, I
think the folks at Legacy have lost a lot of ground due to the fact that it has
been 5+ years since they have released a major version upgrade – unfortunately,
Legacy has become very stale. The one screenshot that was briefly shown
yesterday doesn’t give me a lot of hope and/or confidence that Legacy 8 is
going to gain any of the ground that they have lost.

I totally agree with Ward. I well remember the clamor over the "hurried"
introduction of 7.5. There were several major bugs to contend with and it took
what seemed like months to get the major issues ironed out. In fact the LUG
was a total disaster during the several weeks. Actually 7.5 was a fairly major
update to 7.0 and I don't think it's been 5+ years since that came out.

At the current time the only major benefit (that I can see) of RM over Legacy
is the ability to sync with Family Search Family Tree. Legacy would sync with
New Family Search but that is going away at the end of the month. I'm not sure
where Legacy stands with FS Family Tree but that is a huge win for RM,
especially if the user is LDS. I believe that is what Arlene is referring to.

Certainly any new major release will include new bugs and will not be stable
for awhile. That is a fact of life working with software. It doesn't matter
if it's Millennia, Microsoft, Roots Magic or who.

I think you are being a bit hard on Millennia. I have rarely used a product
with such frequent updates for fixes and small enhancements, and such
responsive and involved (LUG) customer support. Yes, we each have some pet

I did not watch the webinar and I have no particular expectation for Legacy 8.
In fact, I would prefer to see more refinements to Legacy 7 than have to deal

person more than 250 times has proven to be too little for some.

And I guess the functions I miss from NFS will come back to FS FT some time –
it will just take some time and skill from the programmers.

I think you are being a bit hard on Millennia. I have rarely used a product
with such frequent updates for fixes and small enhancements, and such
responsive and involved (LUG) customer support. Yes, we each have some pet
issues that have not been addressed, but this is normal for a complex software
product. (I have been on the other end of this process – there are never enough
resources to deal with all the bugs and enhancement requests.)

I did not watch the webinar and I have no particular expectation for Legacy 8.
In fact, I would prefer to see more refinements to Legacy 7 than have to deal
with any sweeping changes. (And we have to pay for major releases.)

What is so special about RM or other competing products that suggests that
Legacy has fallen behind? Even if a competing product has a particular feature
that Legacy lacks, wouldn’t that product still have a typical list of defects
and shortcomings as well? Will Legacy 8 leapfrog the competition in terms of
features, and still be stable and not introduce any new defects?

Arlene,

It has been roughly 5 years since Legacy 7 was released. I don’t want to see
Legacy 8 released before it is time, but frankly I think it is ridiculous that
it has taken 5+ years between major releases. With Legacy’s track record, I
wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it is the end of the year before Legacy
8 is released. Quite frankly, I was totally disappointed with the “preview”
that was shown today. It was not worth the time or effort to briefly show a
screen shot that was not all that clear to begin with. Based on Geoff’s email
to the list, I thought there would be more of a mini preview than one very
brief screenshot.

You need to make the distinction between sorting and threading.

Sorting just takes Subjects and orders them alphabetically.

Threading requires each reply to contain a reference to the message being
replied to. Then, a thread can be built in which each message is related to
others by these references.

Most web-based email products do not have the capability of threading.

Then came the war (WWII) and they were not able to return to the US and now he
has found his one sister after total silence since just after the war… BUT he
cannot communicate with her – not directly anyway – but hurray for Google
translate and friends who DO know more English than he does by now.

If I may be of help finding places to look for sources – or even shortcuts let
me know. J

I do not know about the fonts for writing the names, but my husband is Austrian

In Austria you see the farm being numbered after the size like Piesting 38.

Since Czechoslovakia was a part of the Austrian – Hungarian union till 1918 I
assume it may be the case also in the Czech area.

I know of a site where you can see the parish names, districts and counties for

Just for the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the site.

SV: [LegacyUG] Duplicate search

2013-04-24 Thread Helle T. Hirschmann
Rating is always belonging to the viewer.
Harshness is never good for others to see. And may at times be hurting.

I first run the automated version looking for those the Intellishare picks up.
Then I take the other automated versions. It is tedious and time consuming.
But I like my file to be truthful and close to the "perfect" version.
A computer can NEVER replace my knowledge about my family - but it MAY save me
some time.
And it DOES save me lots of hours. Thinking back on pen and paper days where I
had to add the same name
On ALL the charts and all the sheets. I love having a computer.

No matter how skilled the program is there WILL be names slipping under the
programs most refined net.

I most often use the Index option of my file before merging.
Finding a family name with duplicate first names - THEN I hit the merge button
and resolve the problem.
After that I make a search for identical first names and see if any slipped my
"all seing eye" - usually I find a number of persons. :-)

I am glad I do not have to go in and resolve EVERY duplicate person.

Under Merge > Find Duplicates > on the "Normal Duplicate Search" Tab, if you
have "Given names for a length of" checked, then "Johanna Maria" and "Anna" are
in no way, shape or form remotely close to the same name, therefor they are NOT
a match. Give yourself an "F" for not checking the help files and learning to
use the program before you blame it for your own mistakes. Remember, the help
files are always your friend.

SV: [LegacyUG] Infant deaths

2013-03-05 Thread Helle Thor Hirschmann
I always put any infant as a child with no first name but same family name as
the other children and then the gender if known.

I do not know about many other countries, but being Dane I know that in the
olden days you had to pay for burying children but not stillborns.
Because of this many said that the child was stillborn even though it had lived
for minutes, hours or days.

If a name of say the mother is unknown I put NN - it is international and works
fine.

For any person where I don't know their name, I put a description in the Given
field, surrounded by privacy brackets. It then looks like these:

[[Unknown infant]]
[[Daughter 2]]
[[Kay's mother]]

This way, I can withhold this non-name from reports if I choose, but there's
still something there to remind me who they are at a glance. I include a
source so I know where I found out about the person, and attaching the source
to this non-name also tells me that the source didn't provide the name, only
that the person existed.

If I later find out what their name is/was, I use the AKA field to add that,
including a source, and then swap the real name with the placeholder name. I
keep the non-name in my research, as an AKA.

This helps to show the progression of my research - a trick I learned from
Geoff at some stage (perhaps the cruise around New Zealand in 2010?). When I'm
printing reports for others I include the citation date in the source so they
can see the progression, too.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

2013-02-27 Thread Helle Thor Hirschmann
Our family is starting to get even ”snail-mail” letters telling us that we have
inherited 4,5 mio. Dollars.

And more and more mails are coming.

It seems to be a business that pays of since the contacts increase and even
come as real live letters.

SO…. I find Brian’s comment prompt and timely.

SV: [LegacyUG] National characters in names

2011-06-14 Thread Jurek Hirschberg
I am looking for a product to migrate to from PAF. I imported my file into
Legacy and noticed that all the Polish national characters except ó had been
skipped in the process. I joined this group for the purpose of asking this
single question about a work-around for the problem. Having read the responses
I am assured that the original answer from Legacy Support was the correct one:
change of development platform is required to radically solve the problem. This
was declared to be the goal. This is a huge challenge and I wish Legacy and
its users a success, as this is in many respects a beautiful product.
Considering that names of people and places are at the very core of this
application, I don’t think that Legacy can stay successful in the longer term
without energetically working towards this goal – which, of course, if properly
done, will improve a lot of other things as well.

As it Is not healthy to pick a product that doesn’t comply to one’s basic
requirement and has a major makeover in store, I am taking my leave for the
moment and return to my dull, dead and reliable PAF. I hope to be back within
near future to check new versions for good news, and not the least because this
user group seems to be a great asset, and a pleasure to participate in and
learn. Thanks.

Word does accept these characters. Any attempt to paste them into Legacy
results in a “?” instead of the pasted character. Legacy seems to be in the
minority of software not supporting these characters.

Kathy,

I cannot speak for WORD as I use OpenOffice.org, however it should be possible
to set the coding to UTF8 and then use Search and Replace to change the names
in question. I doubt if it would do this automatically.

Does Word (for example) accept the diacriticals in question? Perhaps you could
create a source just for this problem - attached to the 'name' field - and then
attach a 'file' under multimedia with the Word document showing all of the
correct name/place spellings with the diacriticals. The file would open
outside of Legacy and wouldn't be subject to it's restrictions. Well, that's
my theory anyway; what I would probably try with that situation. And this does
interest me greatly since I have tons of Polish research to do; thank you for
bringing this up because now I will be aware.

It's ok if all you techies/experts shoot down this idea; this way I will be
prepared when I really get into the Polish records (yes, I've been putting that
off for a long, long time - letting other family members handle it but it turns
out they are not sourcing so I need to go through their research and do that
part :-/

have tried writing my notes in Word and copying them over to Legacy notes, but
the diacriticals do not copy correctly.

I started on Legacy with my husbands English, Irish and Swedish ancestors and
found Legacy a joy to work with. Now, working on my side of the family, with
all four of my grandparents coming from Slovakia, I am constantly frustrated
and have piles of paper documents that I can't enter correctly into Legacy.
What is a work-around to let everyone looking at my reports (or myself after a
Legacy absence)know exactly what specific names I am researching?

It won't help you, Jurek, but it's worth mentioning for the benefit of
those who might not know, that you don't have stick with the characters
given as a default by Legacy. If you right-click on the Special
Characters Ribbon you can select any set of 6 characters to suit your needs.

Right. The special characters ribbon that Alan mentioned did not supply the

Jurek,

Support gave you the final answer! Legacy does not support the fonts which you
require, to do so requires that the program is rewritten using UTF-8 coding and
probably use VB.Net instead of VB6. It is my understanding that this is on the
list of things to be done at some time in the future.

to correctly spell family and place names that go outside the basic character
set? Has anybody seen any activity on the part of Legacy indicating that the
statement about portation should be taken literally within foreseeable future?
Please note that I am not inquiring about international versions of Legacy but
rather about user-controlled data in the standard version.
