2016-06-13 Thread Security First
Hey everyone,

Just for those who haven't come across them. There are two community
related sites that might be of interest to people on here:

The first is TinFoil.Press - which is forum created by Martin Shelton and
has had some interesting and productive conversations on a number of
tech/journo/security etc topics:

https://tinfoil.press

Also, a public calendar of events in this space - feel free to add more!

[liberationtech] Umbrella Android App Public Beta Launch – Available Now for Download!

2015-09-29 Thread Security First
Dear friends,

We are pleased today to announce the public beta launch of Umbrella App on
Android. I’m sure a lot of you on LibTech already know about it already,
but for those who don’t, Umbrella App aims to put digital and physical
security advice in your pocket.

Lessons give you simple, practical advice on what to do and what tools to
do it with – covering everything from sending a secure email to conducting
physical counter-surveillance. You can choose your level of ability or type
of protection needed and get answers that reflect your needs. Users can
mark, customise and share simple checklists for quick reminders. It also
has a series of security information feeds from places like the UN and
Centers for Disease Control to keep you updated on the move.

We particularly hope that it will be a useful tool for those in the
community who are trainers and want a simple tool for participants to be
able to quickly reference - along with individual activists, journalists
and aid workers looking at an element of security for the first time.

We just wanted to thank a number of people and groups on LibTech for their
work and support, especially:

-Tactical Tech/Frontline Defenders for Security in A Box, EFF for
Surveillance Self Defence, which was extremely helpful when building our
digital security content

-Amnesty International, Rory Peck Trust and the European Inter-Agency
Security Forum for helping us with testing

-iSEC Partners – for code auditing us (which we will be publishing fully by
the end of the week)

-Open Tech Fund – for being a great donor and letting us get on with making
things

-All the groups who make all the various open source tools that we have
included

-The many people in the community who welcomed us, and provided us with
fantastic feedback, testing and advice

We owe you all a beer J

Where can I get Umbrella?

The app is available via Google Play here (we will be pushing it onto
F-Droid as quickly as we can and if you want a direct download just drop us
a mail):

Want to help end users get Umbrella?

This is our beta version. It will continue to develop and improve - the
more users and feedback we get the better. Tell your friends, colleagues

[liberationtech] Invitation to be an Alpha Tester for Umbrella Android App!

2015-09-21 Thread Security First
Hey everyone,

As a lot of you know, we have been working on building Umbrella. It's an
Android app that pulls together a huge amount of information on physical
and digital security. It also incorporates a dashboard that pulls in data
feeds from places like the UN and the Centre for Disease Control. (You can
find out more at www.secfirst.org)

We are starting to open up our closed Alpha testing for Umbrella App. Some
of the folks on here are already helping us out on this but we would love
to get more community feedback before a more public launch next week. If
you have a few minutes to spare and are interested in getting a sneak
preview then please drop us a mail direct (i...@secfirst.org) and we can
send on the link!

Re: [liberationtech] A Field Guide to Physical Surveillance for Journalists and Activists

2015-02-28 Thread Security First
Hi JM,

I think the article is an interesting starting point for people
thinking about the issue of physical anti/counter-surveillance for
HRDs and journalists, but there are a number of areas and techniques
which are missing from it - which are important to be able to do it
effectively. For example, team operations, trigger locations, cross
contamination, covert vs overt methods, effective surveillance
detection routes, foot vs vehicles, public transport etc etc.

We will be including a very detailed module on this in Umbrella App
but until that's out, drop me a mail and let's talk through some
aspects that might give readers some more background to the subject
for the article. Especially for activists thinking about doing this
sort of thing for the first time.

It's great to see other people bringing the physical security side
into things! :)

[liberationtech] "Trends in intelligence gathering by governments" - Seeking Peer Reviewers

2014-07-04 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

As some of you might know, the team at Security First is doing some
work to breach the gap with some sectors that could benefit from the
knowledge of the LiberationTech community and others.

In particular, the humanitarian aid space is only now really starting
to increase it's use of technology (in comparison to the human rights
world) and by extension, starting to think about the problems of
digital security. There is currently a report (Communications
technology and humanitarian delivery: challenges and opportunities for
security risk management) coming out which deals with this topic (by
the European Interagency Security Forum - www.eisf.eu) and it will be
read by many people in that sector who have never dealt with this sort
of thing.

We have been asked to write a relatively short (only 2500 words
allowed) paper for the report entitled "Trends in intelligence
gathering by governments." Our idea is try and introduce some
strategic concepts and mitigation measures then direct the reader
towards more detailed sources (all the various organisations and tools
in this community etc.).

I was wondering if anyone has a spare hour next week to offer some
community peer review on what we are writing and generally provide
some constructive criticism? We will of course be happy to mention you
in the report (only if your happy with that of course).

Have a great weekend everyone!

[liberationtech] Covert Surveillance Report

2014-06-12 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

Thought I might pass this along. It's a report by an Irish judge about
electronic and (some) physical surveillance against the Garda (Police)
Ombudsman in Ireland. It's been quite a controversial story but for
those of us doing training/work with HRD groups who have had similar
risks - it's quite interesting.

[liberationtech] TrueCrypt Alternatives?

2014-05-29 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

While the jury is still out on how this TrueCrypt issue plays out.
With TC such a big part of the furniture in LibTech community
practises, lessons, manuals, advice, etc., the question I'm sure a lot
of us are thinking is:

What are the best alternatives to TrueCrypt for the people we work
with and train?

Is there anything that comes close in terms of open source, cross
platform etc? (Pity about the TC license issues as it would be great
to see people in the community who might want to fork it and carry it
on.)

[liberationtech] The NSA and Snowden: Securing the All-Seeing Eye

2014-05-16 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

I thought this might be an interesting article to pass along. It is
unfortunately from the point of view of preventing someone like Snowden but
clearly it has relevance to those of us working on preventing hostile
things occurring to NGOs - esp at the tricky system administrator level.

[liberationtech] ISC Next Week and call for Papers: Communications technology and humanitarian delivery: challenges and opportunities for security risk management

2014-04-30 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

Just two things. Firstly, who is going to be at the ISC Project
Workshop in D.C next week? I am going to be there and will be talking
a bit about what we are doing at Security First, so it would be great
to grab a coffee / beer etc!

Secondly, we've been doing some work with humanitarian aid agencies in
relation to security and many are just beginning to start thinking
about issues of ICT. Some are starting to see many of the problems
that the LiberationTech/Human Rights field has been dealing with for a
while. They asked me to circulate this:

The European Inter Agency Security Forum (EISF) is pleased to announce
a new publication presenting discussion papers which will look at how
communications technology is creating new security risk management
challenges and opportunities for agencies working in humanitarian
response. The publication will present information on current
technologies and their use in security risk management; explore the
impact on security of both humanitarian actors and affected
communities; analyse the ways in which technologies are influencing
how humanitarians operate and their security; and generate debate on
how communications technology can contribute to risk management.

EISF is therefore seeking abstracts for short papers to be included in
the final publication that explores this field. Case studies and
proposals based on current field research or experience are
encouraged. All accepted papers will be published collectively in a
single report to be publicly launched by EISF in September 2014.

Please note the deadline for abstract submission is May 22nd.

[liberationtech] EISF Report - NGO Safety and Security Training Project: How to Create Effective Security Training for NGOs

2014-04-14 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

I know it might be a little bit more focused on the aid worker sector in
comparison to most of the stuff on here, but I just wanted to point out a
very good report which has just been launched by the European Inter-Agency
Security Forum (EISF):

"NGO Safety and Security Training Project: How to Create Effective Security
Training for NGOs"

http://www.eisf.eu/alerts/item.asp?n=19190

I think there is a lot which will be relevant to those of us who do
physical security training. I know that at Security First we are trying to
bridge a few gaps and embrace some positive overlaps with the aid sector as
much as possible.

Also, I hopefully will be in D.C for the ISC Conference in March - so it
will be great to see anyone on the LibTech list who is also there for a
coffee or beer.

Many regards,

[liberationtech] LiberationTech Project UI/UX Lessons?

2014-04-08 Thread Security First
Hi everyone,

With UI/UX being a major part of everyone's Liberation Tech projects
in recent times, we are looking for resources so that we can learn
from other experiences as we build Umbrella App.

I am currently doing a search for as many of these (studies, papers,
specific detailed discussion threads, collected feedback) in our
community as possible. So far I've found the UI/UX studies for TOR and
some of Github stuff for Panic Button but if anyone else has useful
resources that you could send/share - that would be great. If we come
across enough shareable stuff we will make an effort to put it in one
place for others in future.

Thanks everyone,

Hi Brian,

Very valid questions. We intend to focus mainly on the physical security
aspect of things and thus avoid unnecessary overlap with the tools already
available. We will cover this and our background questions etc, in a more
formal announcement at a later stage - when we are ready to push out
further in the next few months (sorry just trying to focus on getting the
the initial product at the moment!). I'm very happy to chat offline though
with whomever wants to - I'll drop you a mail directly.

Hi Security First,

I see from your survey your familiar with a variety of mobile tools. How
will your work be different? What qualifies you to provide this kind of
information?

Also I hope your tools will be open source.

I'd very much be interested in speaking further, and seeing how we might
collaborate, as this is a field I work a lot in.
