Fellow Hackers: We need a fearless counter campaign. Roy Schestowitz explains that he was advised by an "insider": [1]http://techrights.org/n/2024/04/22/Video_Online_Brigade_Demands_That _the_Person_Who_Started_GNU_Li.shtml We already know that the attacks on our founder are a proxy for the subversion of software freedom to serve proprietary interests. Have we taken note of the "openwashing" identity of the Linux Foundation? The global digital economy runs on Free Software: [5]https://hbr.org/2021/09/the-digital-economy-runs-on-open-source-here s-how-to-protect-it GNU hackers are gifted individuals capable of providing unparalleled consulting services to industries - around the world - that rely on our software. Perhaps the FSF could begin to devise new sources of revenue by formally expanding our financial model to include services? In respect of the latter, we would need an operations management team to: 1) Undertake a market analysis 2) Develop an operational plan. We also need to formulate a plan concerning our kernel. Hey Alexandre: Hi, Deb, You shouldn't really expect anyone believe any of your far less over-the-top allegations, after you cried wolf putting your name under obviously false allegations, should you? Didn't you think ahead that you'd be ruining your reputation to the point that even any true allegations you might have would be harder to believe after that? This might be bait. We don't need you to waste your time and energy. We need you to help RMS and the FSF continue to build on the vision of free software that has revolutionised the global software industry. The fact that this revolution has incurred the wrath of corporations who have resorted to the exploitation of female faces as proxies in their attempt to literally behead the leader of the Free Software movement - is testament to its resounding and unprecedented success. Ali: I am not speaking on behalf of the GNU Project or a team behind a package. I don't want to cause misunderstanding. It doesn't matter whether I'm a member of FSF/GNU or not, we're a community, nobody and no project is superior to another. I don't like to put the name of GNU Project/package in front of my name because I don't want to (in any way) imply that my opinion matters more or I am talking from a stronger position. It's not about superiority or voicing support from any perceived stronger position. It's simply about the show of solidarity, so the public can see that those affiliated with GNU packages support our founder and Chief Executive. Adrienne -- Freedom - no pane, all gaiGN! What's the evidence? It's not a "claim". We already know that corporations are behind the attack. I explicitly proposed investigation. I'm sure you know the meaning of "investigate". My impression is that RMS is not likely to countenance such legal action. He's too much of a nice person. However, our legal standing (i.e. our interest in protecting our work as members of the free software community) is not dependent on RMS' approval. The defamation of our founder's character impacts members of the community. Re: RMS is back on board
RMS announced he is back on the FSF board [1][1]https://twitter.com/nixcraft/status/1373905399707955202 but his name is not (yet?) on the FSF website [2][2]https://www.fsf.org/about/staff-and-board/ ? So here's my tweet: "Hooray!!! #RMS is back on the board of the #FSF after being axed in 2019. A plot by corporate vultures to rustle up opportunity to exploit #FreeSoftware, #MIT professors reciprocated by pretending that they didn't know how to read. #GNU #Linux [3]https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/22/22344910/richard-stallman-returns -free-software-foundation-board-comments" Yes RMS' name is now at the end of the fsf page, but not as President: [4]https://www.fsf.org/about/staff-and-board They've also axed Oliva for suggesting that prospective members send a message to the FSF indicating their wish to have RMS reinstated. This is Oliva's communication: "Would you make a pledge to become a new member, or to renew your membership, if the FSF gets Richard back in the board of directors? Please email it to the FSF contact address (info), copying myself (oliva, at fsf or gnu). Past communications in his favor have generally failed to reach the board of directors, and I believe this would be valuable information for the directors and voting members to have. Would you do that for me, for Richard, for the FSF, for the Free Software Movement? That would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!" RMS will need his friends, like Oliva, by his side. Let's put the FSF on probation, until we're quite sure that RMS is not being constrained or "handled" in any way. Adrienne -- Freedom - no pane, all gaiGN! References: 1. Re: Sacrifices made for Free Software
Hi Jean Louis: Finally, think about the degrees, many times people with degree will get employed in companies where their bosses don't have any degree. It is case with me, I have no degree and I am employing people with degree, and many times it means little, we want practical skills to be demonstrated, with the degree or not. I've met a lot of people who either dropped out from university or simply didn't have the opportunity to go because of their circumstances. Some of them are highly intelligent, sometimes more so than others who resumes are literally wrapped in 3 degrees (not the vocal group :-) ) Right now I'm having to deal with an absolute JackA** who did his PhD at MIT. He has 3 degrees. This fellow has been recruited to advise Jamaicans that I'm not the author of GNU C-Graph because, as he claims, C-Graph could not have been written in the Third World! He is really fronting as a stooge / Uncle Tom for the defendants in the criminal matter concerning the theft of my BSc thesis, but the point I'm trying to make is that even with a PhD he apparently doesn't realise that he's made himself into a major league a**. We all know that some of the most talented entrepreneurs and hackers amongst us dropped out of university and changed the world. I'm merely pointing out to Nicholas that his odds of success will increase exponentially with his degree. Re: Sacrifices made for Free Software
Nicholas: > I studied for 2 years at SIUe before dropping out > because it became impossible for me to continue and keep my freedom. On the other hand, by dropping out, sure you stop being a victim in the context of your school that I've never heard of, but you're setting yourself up to be more of a victim in society at large where you're spending the rest of your life. Freedom means being able to break chains, or anything you might perceive as a "jail". In order to do that you'll need the right tools for the job. A degree will be one of the most effective instruments in your toolkit. It will not only inform you on strategies for breaking jails, but it will also help you to influence and gain the respect of those you might seek to recruit in your campaign for software freedom. Without the degree you will find that society will automatically erect barriers around opportunities and chain you to underachievement. Your freedom to make choices will be limited. It occurred to me that there isn't really a good one-word way of describing someone who rejects proprietary software on ethical grounds. For example there's "vegan" for people who don't consume animal products on ethical grounds. How about "speerfie"? That's "s" for software and "p" for person tacked on to "free" spelt backward, then "ie" at the end as in "freebie". Or just "peerfie"? RMS is no more sexist that any other man I know - especially in engineering and computer science where sexism abounds. I call out sexism when I see it's necessary. The notion that rms is a misogynist, as claimed by others, is false. How can one person's desire to write code be rebuffed by another's behaviour, sexist or otherwise? Re: [libreplanet-discuss] membership confusion, FSF way forward
Daniel, It is my opinion too that the membership of the FSF board needs re-evaluation. I'm off to get some rest. Sincerely Adrienne On Sun, Sep 22, 2019 at 10:50 AM Daniel Pocock <[1]dan...@pocock.pro> wrote: Recent discussions show a lot of confusion about FSF (associate) membership. The FSF publishes[1] copies of the financial statements The 2018 filing[2] shows that FSF has only registered 7 people as voting members and the other 1466 people only registered as volunteers. Why the distinction? Given the scale of the recent problems, a change of leadership is not just about changing the president. The existing board have supported the president through many years. Any of them could have resigned at any time if they didn't agree with his leadership. Therefore, it is my personal view that: 1. all the 1466 volunteers, associate members and any new volunteers who joined recently must be given equal voting rights. 2. the entire board resigns and the entire organization is then engaged in the election of both a new board and president. The actual resignation date could be deferred until LibrePlanet so there is time for reasoned decision making. A new president alone doesn't mean much if the existing board or staff carry on doing different things. It may take time to see just what success the president really has. People may want to know who the president will be and what their platform is before deciding to renew membership or make further donations, it is too early to decide right now. Given the extent to which recent discussions demonstrate misunderstandings about membership status, it doesn't feel correct for the FSF to continue using the term "associate member", as this term and the marketing around it (phrases like "Renew your membership!") appear to be giving people an inaccurate understanding of their status. You can "Rise Up" in a civil manner. That is what you will be doing by engaging the FSF in diplomatic discussion. It is a protest - just a more civil one than the twitter campaign that lies in waiting should you fail to do anything at all. We need formal assurance from the FSF that RMS remains our Chief GNUisance! Go organise - i.e #RiseUp !! Adrienne On Thu, Sep 19, 2019 at 5:05 PM Patrick 'P. J.' All I can add to all of these well-said points is an expansion of the above advice. When you see others committing what you see as injustice, be better than them. Don't stoop to their level. Respond to emotion with reason. Please don't "#RiseUp" or anything so emotional. The resignation is done, like it or not. Our two biggest threats now are: 1. That the free software community is now split into warring factions, and 2. Re: [libreplanet-discuss] FSF should defend RMS and reject his resignation!
The call to go to Twitter with a hashtag is exactly the opposite of what I am suggesting. This seems like having a protest march before even an initial attempt to negotiate and work on diplomacy in the first place. RMS' should be reinstated immediately as FSF President. Failing that the GNU community needs to hear directly, formally, and in writing from the FSF that rms remains head of GNU. In the event that he does not return as President, I also propose rms be given a new title - Chief Technology Innovation Officer (CTIO) or Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to underscore his position of responsibility in respect of GNU. Please go ahead and organise groups of GNU maintainers to devise an approach to the FSF for your diplomatic intervention. You need to act on this immediately. Good luck! Quiliro, I see you're at [1]riseup.net! Your message has made Richard Stallman, an icon to human rights, resign as president of the board of directors and as president of the FSF. As for me, I will stop preferring women for positions on free software technical areas. I think that they will earn them if they deserve such positions. Affirmative action is a noble concept, but sometimes adopting the policy just doesn't make sense. You always need the very best for technical positions - which should accordingly be earned on merit. I doubt that I will be "preferring women" for technical positions at GNU C-Graph! This whole business smells like a set-up. I've noted the number of people who rushed to distance themselves from rms, some of whom he might once have considered friends. RMS will rise again in the blink of an eye! You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. From "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou Adrienne G.
