No No No! Fran, you *know* that the discs can't handle high accelerations.
The correct way to dry it is to use a tumble drier.

Subject: RE: H Re: Funny little mouse pads!

Well I did as you suggested Fran, swung it above my head by the power
cord! Trouble is, my wife walked in and the Lib hit her on the head. In
her temper she threw it against the wall and it bounced out through the
upstairs window, landed on the passenger seat of a convertible, bounced
out and into the window of a taxi traveling West towards London. I'm now
in pursuit.

Hope this story has a happy ending!

Exact, No problems on a L100 with Linux.
For the L50, do not forget it is 9.5 thick, and requires some modifications

hard drive for sale?

2001-06-05 Thread Dan Baker

Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 18:15:52 +1000
From: Dan Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: hard drive for sale?

I have a 50 ct and wondered if anyone had a win95 pre-installed H.D say
2 gig or more that I could just plug into the Libby and boot straight
away... I don't want to have to muck around getting anything sorted,
just plug in and away I go.
Main use is as storage for digital pics when I am out camping, 4x4ing
and fishing.

   Anyone?

   Best Regards,

A tumble drier??? Then you'll probably shatter the screen!
Haven't you ever done this before?
Two words: Blast furnace. No shocks, bumps, or acceleration,
*and* it'll dry anything in a matter of seconds.

I would think if it is DOS... do you run it inside a DOS windows in Windows
9x? If so there is a size icon on the top toolbar of the dos window... look
for settings such as 7x12 or 3x4

That is the pixel resolution and you should be able to find a size that
would fit.

If you run it in DOS, go into BIOS ( hold ESC while booting, then press F1
when told to ) and turn OFF "display stretch" which MAY result in a smaller
screen, but it is hard to imagine that would allow 600 tall on a 480 tall
display.

From: "neil barnes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Screen resolution

Um,

I think anything that works in DOS in 800*600 must be talking to the
graphics chips direct...stretch mode off just puts the normal 25*80
characters into 400 lines deep instead of 480.

Using a smaller character size will just give you a smaller dos box of 25*80
characters.

An external monitor will work under DOS at 800*600 and (under windows and
linux) it will scroll the LCD to match the external screen.

Is this app graphical, does it use the mouse? If so, you may be get lucky...

I forgot to mention that software is DOS graphic mode.
Not the text mode.

And software under windows does not allow me to switch
to window mode.

Only software which makes virtual desktop under DOS
will help I think.

Any hope to sort that problem?

Thanks

Wow! You guys are sadists! Poor little mousepad. Actually, I think Toshiba
had a bit of sadistic humor when it invented the mouse arrangement. Wonder
why they did not work out an offshoot to the IBM pencil eraser setup on the
keyboard. It should not have added any size, especially to the 100/110.

ss1010 and linux questions...

2001-06-05 Thread Frankie East
Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 11:57:33 -0400
From: "Frankie East" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: ss1010 and linux questions...

Hi, I'm new to the group, living in the northern virginia corridor doing govt software contracting, and I bought this awesome tiny libretto from a friend in Korea.  I have ghost images for win98 and win2k.  I've run both os's fine on it so far but I'd really prefer to punt microsloth from my machine.

My problem:
Installing from a boot image on the floppy has hung the machine after launching the loading initrd messages.

Installing from cd, well the libretto seems to just not be able to boot from a cd.

Installing from hard disk, tried two different methods:
Boot disk and redhat on local filesystem, results are I still hang on the boot floppy.
Modifying autoboot.bat on the hard drive in dosutils to point to any of three images thus far: initrd.img, boot.img, and pcmcia.img hangs as though it were booting the floppy, same first couple of lines to the loading initrd part, then hung empty black screen.

Anyone have any clues on how I can get Linux on this laptop?

Thanks in advance,
Frankie East

I noticed someone selling a parallel port device to do this. Not sure if it is
reputable or not, though. Here is the link:

FDD PA2940U interchangeability with PA2612U

I need a boot floppy for my 110CT. I think the standard FDD is the PA2940U. Can the
PA2612U be used as an alternative?

Thw bios battery is under the keyboard, left hand side. You'll have to split
the case to get to it. The bad news is that it probably won't work... If it
doesn't then the only way to remove the password is to make some connections
on the parallel port and then boot the machine. You'll need a miniport or
fullsized port adaptor to do this:

link pins 1-5, 1-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15

There is no parallel port on just the central Lib. You need the I/O bar or the Port
Replicator.

Here's a great tip posted a while ago but it requires a floppy drive:

Daniel,

I think you're stuffed (see my earlier mail). If there's no mouse driver
that can scroll a bigger screen, it appears that a display set to be bigger
than the LCD just displays the top 480*640 of the image. Should be ok on an
external monitor, though.

HD size in Libretto 70?

Subject: HD size in Libretto 70?

On http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ (under "Upgrades") it says

"the L70 has a 9.5mm HD",

but then goes on to say

"it is highly recommended in the L20-70 models that the thin
foam/plastic spacers underneath the plastic sheet surrounding the hard
drive bay be removed before insertion of drives thicker than 8.5mm."

So for the Libretto 70 which is correct: 8.5mm or 9.5mm?

Mike

See my site below -> Overclocking article & section.

There are no 'safe' or 'guarenteed' modifications of this type. Doing so will
risk killing your Libretto instantly, even if you follow all instructions
carefully. However, for about 90% of the people who attempted the
modification, they were successful. The other 10% had to either return to a
slower speed, undo the modification, or toss the Libretto.

well, it's like this. The earliest Libretto 70s shipped with a 9.5mm IBM HD
until TOshiba released later models with a 8.45mm Toshiba HD (when they became
available) of the same size. THus, to be safe, check to make sure extra HD
spacers weren't added in your L70 (ie. later models) if you try to fit a 9.5mm
HD in one.

New Libretto 100CT owner

2001-06-05 Thread Cray Drygu

From: Cray Drygu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: New Libretto 100CT owner

Hello,

I just bought a 100CT off eBay, and what it comes with is pretty scarce
(the smaller port replicator, floppy drive, AC adapter, 2 batteries). Is
there a CD drive that's reccomended for use with this, or can I pretty much
pick anything? How about NICs and modems? I've never had to buy laptop
accessories before, so I'm pretty clueless =)

Also, I'm thinking of upgrading the 2.1gb hard drive. I'm aware of the
BIOS's 8.1gb limitation, but that's okay with me (for now, at least,
especially on a 166mhz machine). Any advice on driver's I'll need when
installing the new one? Ones for the CD and floppy won't be an issue right
away, since I plan on plugging the hard drive into my desktop, making it
bootable, and copying the contents of the Windows CD to it. Then I can
just stick it in the Libretto and install that way. However, I'll
eventually need drivers for the floppy, mouse, display, and so on.

Thanks in advance,
Cray

I got to play with one on a trip to Denver a year ago and immediately fell
in love with it because of the size. I've been wanting one ever since, so
you're darn right I'll enjoy it =) I plan on using it for work to carry
files around, since I work in a few different buildings, and maybe using it
in the car to play mp3s.

I wanted a 110CT, but they're going for a little too much for me right now
(the $450 I paid for this is even stretching it a little). If I get more
cash, though, I'll buy myself the upgrade and put this one back on eBay =)
