I used to work for Jim Blackburn out in Campbell, CA ... the guy who first designed stable pannier (sp) carriers ... and occasionally a few folks like you would drop in on their way to Canada from Tierra del Fuego or some such trip! More power to you. I'm only able to truck-camper down to Mexico occasionally. But someone must be selling something that would take advantage of all the turning of the wheels. I know bikers don't like the idea of drag... but with the amount of power needed vs. the time you're going to be peddling, I'd think the amount of drag to charge the libby one day, and the phone the next, wouldn't be to bad. You may need a substantial solar array to power both each day. This would charge a Lib as per a mains transformer. However, what troubles me is that the Power fluctuation inherent may cause the lib circuitry to reject a diminished supply current/voltage. This would not be a problem in itself, but would be a problem if prolonged exposure to Power fluctuation damaged either circuitry or battery. Can anyone recommend a solar guru? Will anyone give me Bill Cotten's address? I had the same problem on an old Compaq LTE Lite/25 (a 386 with a NiMH pack) ... battery was fine, accidentally ran it right down and it never detected the pack again. The scary thing is it never detected ANY pack again. The motherboard blew a month or so later (unrelated - I have a habit of soldering my projects straight to the motherboards of old computers ;-) so that solved THAT problem for me ... Obviously you have no idea of how a Li-ion battery dies. Well the solar panel has a reasonably high internal resistance so the answer to your question is both - an inability by the panel to supply sufficient current (eg. under clouds, trees, etc.) will result in an increase in internal resistance resulting in a lack of voltage at the output. I plan on charging most of the day, with minimal use in the evening. Thats probably the best option - like I said, you DON'T want to run electrical stuff straight off a solar panel (unless its pretty tolerant like a little motor or a clock or something). You'd be better off probably charging an external pack (ie. NOT the Libretto's internal pack - in fact you might want to junk that altogether). There exist bike mountable units which could supply as much as 20 Watts at 15 Volts in direct sunlight. Yes, in DIRECT sunlight. Those claims vary wildly - you'd do well to actually try it out because I doubt you'll constantly have full summer sun falling onto that thing. Take their claims with a very large grain of salt - a bit like laptop battery life claims ;-) However, what troubles me is that the Power fluctuation inherent may cause the lib circuitry to reject a diminished supply current/voltage. Thats why you charge an external pack. There are circuits out there that'll regulate your power for you so the battery charges nicely even as your panel illumination fluctuates wildly (remember, the battery doesn't care if it charges a bit at a time). This would not be a problem in itself, but would be a problem if prolonged exposure to Power fluctuation damaged either circuitry or battery. It'd probably confuse the hell outa the libby, certainly the charge regulator in it will keep cutting out on you. LIke I said, a regulator circuit designed for use with solar panels would be your best bet charging a totally separate battery pack (which you could then use to run both your satphone and your libby, both without their internal battery packs). It's just dawning on me that Neil was having me do what he'd suggested when we were troubleshooting my dead 70CT LCD to see if the lamp was bad. With a working unit up and running, monitor drivers enabled and everything going except the LCD lamp... the system is sending an image to the screen, but without the bulb, you won't see anything. But take it outside, which Neil had me do with my booted 70CT with the black screen... let the sun hit it... and I guess the sun provides enough of a source to create an image. Unfortunately that didn't end up to be my problem. So my suggestion of disabling the monitor in Device Manager, and activating the lid switch would shut down the LCD totally, keeping the signal from getting there to begin with. Maybe when I get around to switching the LCDs (burnt pixel in one), I can experiment with this Neil. A little of what you wrote sunk in... through a lot that was bouncing off my thick skull. I realized that I really know very little about just how LCD screens work. Millions of transistors control millions of crystals that each display... either one pixel ... or one color for a pixel ... or both. Is there more than one crystal per pixel? Are there 3 crystals of different colors focusing on one pixel on the surface of the screen? Probably not. I forgot much of what I read already. The controller makes the crystals actually turn to let light pass through from what I understand. I guess each crystal has an innate coloration, right? I would still think that if a MUCH brighter light source is shined through the crystals, the color might get washed out. Unless the crystals actually work like prisms that refract white light into bands of color. Is that what's happening? Perhaps it's not like white light going through a colored gel in front of a spotlight, as I initially thought. Then there's the deal of the different elements that make up different layers of the LCD screen. You mentioned something about a 'layer' (my term) that I didn't understand. I also read where there's supposed to be panel's of glass. Was that ages ago before the plastic front surfaces? Or is there glass plates inside somewhere. You can buy an XJ1560 56k PCMICA card off ebay for about US$35, if their completed auctions are any guide (that's how I got mine.) Is that sufficiently pauperish? That's definitely in the ballpark. I saw a Xircom for $15 and a Diamond MM and one or two others for $25 (+SH) doing a search on Pricewatch.com Funny Bull Cotton's name came up. I think it was Bill who said he had the Xircom ethernet/56.6K combo modem that Axiontech has been advertising as 'pulls' for $56. That looks enticing to me for networking the Libby to my PC back in CA. This DCC parallel port connection is another thing that was old years ago! Anyway, I'll call Axiontech and see if the Xircom is controller based and find out what SH charges are. Guess this might be stepping just above being pauperistic :-) But not by a lot!
