[LIB] GPS-my notes

Subject: GPS-my notes

Regarding GPS notes with the Libretto:

I have a Delorme EarthMate that was purchased in the Road Warrior kit (with
Palm serial cable adapter and Solus Pro). I had been using the Libretto
with the SA7 (could be 6) software to get around Boston. I was able to
install it all initially to the HD, so it did not need the CD. This worked
great for a while. Solus software for the palm sucks, so that was nearly
worthless. The problem with the Earthmate is that there is no power switch,
so it draws batter power whether it sees a serial connection. Sometimes the
darn thing killed its batteries when the Libretto was off or in sleep. I am
NOT very happy with the Earthmate, but it served its purpose. Overall it
was very useful, but it seemed painful to carry the Lib around on every
trip.

I was able to get the best of all worlds by combining this with a Garmin
Etrex Vista with the Mapsource software. The Vista has 24 MB of memory (not
as much as the eMAP max) that can hold full street-detail maps. The
earthmate does NOT compare with the vista in terms of signal reception and
functionality. The earthmate was a pain to use to acquire, requiring prime
dash real estate while the vista works just fine sitting between or on the
seats. The earthmate is now used as an emergency backup unit (or a loaner
to friends driving).

Most of the time I can just use the eTrex Vista to get me around town or
carried via plane to map other cities. The Libretto can be interfaced with
the eTrex via a serial cable if there is an area where I have not pre-loaded
the maps into the Garmin unit. While the eTrex is not as expandable as the
eMap (external antenna/bigger memory cards), I puchased it because it was
far more sturdy than the eMap. It has mil-spec water submergability (is
that a word?) for 5 meters for 30 minutes or something like that, and I also
use this with a bike mount as my speedo/map/avg speed/max speed when I
cycle.

I have not yet had time, but I will soon load clonecd versions of each of
the software (4 disks X 650MBorless) so that I will have full access to
everything on the Libretto. Has anyone used clonecd or any of the pseudo cd
programs on the Libby? I do not have experience with these except for
glowing reviews from friends.

Subject: Re: [LIBRETTO] Libretto Digest #1727

Regarding the IBM 8.1 GB HD's, the price was cheaper than previously
mentioned by the COMPGEEKS mailing list. With a discount code, each unit
was only $49.00, so I bought two. The unit comes formated as FAT (16 or 32
I do not recall), and it is immediately recognized in Windows 98 and Windows
2K. Power comes through the PCMCIA card, but there seems to be an external
power adapter that may or may not be connected.

As a side note, the speed doesn't seem very fast, but then again my 70CT is
pretty slow itself, and it is going through a 16 bit interface.

Last night I backed-up 7GB of files from my 70CT, and it did not complain.
What I have not tested is what would happen if I hook up both of the drives
to the Libretto with the enhanced docking station. I wonder whether having
three hard drive controllers on a 70CT would really confuse it.

Power is from the pcmcia slot, but I am interested in taking this unit apart
(and losing the 2 year warranty) to see whether external power can be used.
The clever idea that I have (might be insane) is that if external power can
be used to power the HD unit, then a 40GB+ laptop drive can be installed
there. The next step would be to purchase the new Toshiba MP3 player (iPod
clone) that is sold in Japan now because it supports removable PCMCIA disk
drives. With this setup, I could have a small portable MP3 player with the
5GB HD as standard, and then at home and work I could have an MP3 monster
base station with 40+ GB HD's using these external units. Most likely I
will not do that, but you have to have some dreams. :)

From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re:[LIB] Off Topic: GPS, Libretto, ...
GPS
I bave the 70CT, for original GPS consideration I bought the Delorme
Earthmate with their mapping software. While I was able to do the entire
installation of that for non-CD use, the Earthmate GPS seemed to be flakey
in terms of power usage. I had purchased the Targus car power adapter for
the libretto, so plenty of power was getting to that, but the lack of a
power switch on the Earthmate really made me wonder. I was continuously
switching batteries on the Earthmate GPS, and I was not sure if it was
reading a closed circuit on the serial port (mini replicator) when the
Libretto was not on. Please correct me if this is not correct.

THe current GPS choice is the GARMIN ETREX VISTA plus Mapsource CDs. That
has served me very well since it can be used without lugging the libretto
around.

As a note, thanks guys for the instructions in Japan. I ended up spending
some time in Akihabara enjoying the sites. Strangely, I was unable to find
the librettos there while i saw tons of alternate machines. The newest
trend seems to be superclear mini-widescreen mini-laptops with no antiglare
coating. These high-res (12xx x 7xx) screens look great showing video, and
seem easy to work with.

The U101 is a great little machine, but I could not get used to the oouse
control, seeming less intuitive than the librettos. The price was 160,000
yen, so it was much less than the $2000.00 from dynamism. The Sharp Mebius
was insanely thin, and the vertical dock was amazing. At 144800 yen, my
credit card was calling out for it very loudly. The most amazing thing that
I saw was a mockup for an IBM 701C mockup. It was a return to the 701
butterfly keyboard, but it was in a sub note. I wish that I could have
spoken Japanese because I was not able to get any details about it. (I did
take two pics of the mock). In the end I decided that the 70ct still suits
my needs (internet and photo storage), so I can wait a bit longer.

For 39800 yen, the 5 GB gigabeat was really too big and overpriced now that
the iPODs are 300 bucks for 10GB.

I don't have a hosting provider now, but I can email pics individualy if
anyone wants.

The CF harddisk idea seems pretty neat, but for more storage a 1.8" HD could
be used. I was surprised to learn that the Sony TR-series (TR1, TR2, TR3)
use a 1.8" HD to help get a better battery life. I keep thinking that the
TR-series is the natural upgrade from the Libretto, but I still feel that I
don't need the built-in optical media bay. Since the new 505-series now has
a DVD/CDR and the Toshiba Dynabook is not sold in the US, there are not many
choices left.

OK, getting my lazy arse out and buying a big HD

From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: OK, getting my lazy arse out and buying a big HD

Well per the subject, I believe it is now time for me to upgrade my
Libretto's HD. I have the 70CT, and since I have been on this list, we all
speak of the 9.5 mm drives fitting. The only problem seemed to be that
memory chips were becoming unsocketed(?) for some people with the 70CT and a
9.5 mm drive. Since 8.45 mm drives are rare (and not cheap it seems), I
figured that I would get a 12GB 9.5 mm drive.

I hope that will not happen to me, but I was wondering if anyone had
opinions on the following:

Onsale has a 12 GB drive now for $222.99
Toshiba MK1214GAP 12GB ATA/66 HD-2.5LP 9.5MM 13MS 4200RPM
http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00058614/02834018.htm
I think this is the one where the two pins need to be jumpered to get the
drive to master mode. Can anyone confirm this?

They also have the 12GB IBM drive for $214.99
TRAVELSTAR 12GN 12.0G HD-ATA/66 4200 RPM 9MM
http://www.egghead.com/category/inv/00062895/02941692.htm
I think this is the one where a few people have had problems with memory
chips.

Anyone have any opinions regarding either drive or preferences, please
respond to the group. 8)

Thanks,
-Eugene-

GPS - what's best for 70 CT?

Subject: GPS - what's best for 70 CT?

I am in the market for a GPS system, now that I keep getting lost in Boston.
The darn streets just are not straight.
8)

Does anyone currently use a GPS with the Libretto, and if such, what
software are you using that can be accessed on the HD alone.

I have considered Sony Etak, but unfortunately they no longer sell the
PCMCIA only version, the DeLorme Earthmate/RoadWarrior, and the Garmin
hand-held series. I believe that the III+ can interface with a PC, but the
Emap looks like a good portable GPS.

The primary use of the unit will be for on-road use.

Thanks,
Eugene

GPS Thanks

2000-08-08 Thread Eugene Hsu

From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: GPS Thanks

I must give my great thanks.

I really appreciate how great the Libretto newsgroup is. There are so many
qualified individuals here who have experimented with the different
technologies.

>From the current discussions, the Etrex seems to be a great little unit, and
far cheaper than the Emap that I was looking at. I however found a great
deal on the Earthmate Road Warrior ($148.00 with $5.00 shipping) on an
auction site. It's new, and it will also interface with both my PC and a
Palm device. The only problem is that I lost my Palm IIIxe last Sunday.
8(I will wait to replace the Palm, but I definitely need the GPS. I
still also need to buy a good auto adapter and new battery for the L70CT.
Does anyone have suggestions on the best one (perhaps with fuses or better
voltage regulation)?

For the price it will work well with the Libretto, and since I have an extra
full-docking station, I am thinking of permanantly mounting the docking
station and the GPS to either my dash or a lap board (as mentioned here).

The overall cost should be about $250-$275 for the parts (power adapters and
such), but it also includes the Palm software and cable. The Etrex is small
and neat, so if I lose this bid, I think I will try and get one of those.
Otherwise the Road Warrior package will meet my needs.

Has anyone dealt on Ebay with the fellow selling (he has been selling tons
of) Libretto spare parts from Albany, NY?

Does Toshiba actually still make batteries, or are those being sold a year
old already?

Age of Batteries

2000-08-11 Thread Eugene Hsu

Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 22:23:22 GMT
From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Age of Batteries

OK,

along with the GPS, I am going to buy a new extended battery and car power
unit (probably the Targus). I do have a question regarding batteries and
age of such.

I talked with Toshiba sales (from the web site) today, and the indicated
that Toshiba is still making the batteris for the Libretto, but that they
would stop manufacturing them in six months or so. This stinks.

My question is the following:
We all know that charge cycling kills the Li-ion batteries, but how about
age as a factor.

If we bought batteries now, and only charged them once per week to keep them
full, will they last?

If they sit on a shelf for a year, will they last (after being recharged)?

This question is relevant also to buying batteries on ebay. There are a few
vendors out there selling hi-cap Libretto batteries for nearly 1/2 retail.
They probably have a bunch of units from last year (so a year old already).
Even if these are factory sealed units, would these units have
charging/storing problems due to sitting around on the shelf for such a long
time. In that case, would it be better to purchase a new battery (at a
premium price) from Toshiba or a vendor who has access to the new stock?

I like long questions that should have simple answers.

8)

uBid has been selling the Sony exernal cdroms that are designed for their
VAIO series notebooks and the 505's. Does anyone know whether that unit is
specific to the Sony laptops (e.g. proprietary connection through standard
PCMCIA interface) or whether these are similar in design to the 650 series
(SCSI interface to generic SCSI CD).

Sorry I don't have the part number in-front of me.

3. Hibernation / Drives Bigger than 8GB / Linux

This should be on someone's web page, but I just put a 20 GB in my 70ct. I
did the following

1) created the max-size 8 GB default partition with boot floppy with Win98se
on the libretto
2) used a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter (a really good one) to hook the drive to my
toshiba M500D server (I found a local Boston computer store that sells these
if someone needs a source)
3) used Partition Magic 4.0 (yeah it's old) to create another partition to
use all available space (minus 100 MB) from the end of the disk
4) Slapped the drive back in the Libretto and formatted the second partition

So far it has hibernated a few times and it hasn't killed the drive. The
only thing I need now is an Adaptec 1460A slim scsi card since I gave away
my Sony PRD-650 to my sister. Does anyone have a spare for cheap?

Thanks to someone on the list who listed the procedure before.

[LIB] Another HD vendor

Subject: Another HD vendor

With all the talk about HD's, if you are not fond of eBay, you could just go
to spartantech.

They have a full listing of Toshiba and IBM laptop HD's, including the
Toshiba 40GB 9.5mm tall unit.

http://www.spartantech.com/Items/NotebookDrives.asp

Last year when we were looking immediately for a 20GB laptop HD, they had
some great prices and were able to ship overnight for us. By buying the HD
from spartantech and the aluminum HD chassis from another vendor, we saved
$400.00 off of the "Toshiba" upgrade part. I think that I used them also a
few years ago for my old Toshiba 2115CS HD upgrade.

They recently merged with another computer company, but I see that their
prices are still relatively fair.

[LIB] Amorphous LCD vs. LTPS Crystaline LCD vs. TFT

2002-01-13 Thread Eugene Hsu

Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2002 20:30:57 +
From: "Eugene Hsu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Amorphous LCD vs. LTPS Crystaline LCD vs. TFT

Hmmm sorry for this long message

Does anyone know of a good LCD-industry access or LCD discussion board. It
has been a while since I took physical electronics, and I can't fine enough
information to satiate my curiosity.

I was shopping around for a 17" LCD with TV inputs, and I came across the
two Samsung Models 170MP and 171MP. There are a few feature differences
listed, but a question arose since the 170MP was listed as TFT-LCD and the
171MP was listed as A-Si LCD. I need to ask, "Is this not the same
technolgy? Does A-Si LCD = TFT-LCD, or not?"

I remember the old days when people spoke of Active matrix (transistor on
every pixel) vs Passive Matrix (transistors on edges, so dual-scan was added
at some time to improve response). The Toshiba spec seems to indicate that
this LTPS technology is another way of having transistors in the LCD.
*ponder*

The brightness level and view angle are greater for the 171MP, but it seems
so too is the power requirement, which would indicate that perhaps the same
LCD components are the same (LCD's block light when aligned right?), but the
light producing elements draw greater current... or am I completely off
track?

Well the cost of the 171MP is greater (runs about $1300), so I am probably
going to pick up the 170MP (a local store has it for $700-800.00 vs the
$1000.00 I see on the internet). Does anyone have one of these?

Since everything ends up going back to Toshiba, further reading found these:

TOSHIBA INTRODUCES WORLD'S SMALLEST LOW-TEMPERATURE POLY-SILICON TFT LCD
WITH XGA RESOLUTION
http://www.toshiba.com/taec/press/to-055.shtml

LCD Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.toshiba.com/taec/main/faq/lcd_faq.html

It seems that Toshiba in 1999 had the 1024x768 LTPS-TFT displays in a 6.3
inch format, and at the time it was claiming that the technology was better
than amorpheous silicon. I do wish that my 70CT had greater resolution, so
I wonder whether we could replace our screens with the LTM06C310 or its
modern equivalent. *further pondering*
