Lib 100CT Latest BIOS & Win98 Installation

Subject: Lib 100CT Latest BIOS & Win98 Installation

Hello all,

I have just subscribed to the list so please excuse if this has been asked
before!!

I have a Lib 100CT 166MMx with 2.1Gig H/D.

I wish to install Windows 98 from a 'clean' hard drive.

I understand the BIOS should be updated first and that there are some driver
updates etc.

I would be grateful if someone could point me to the details on the
procedure for doing all this. Like, how do I get win98 on the hard drive
when there is no CD-ROM? I do have a Freecom PCMCIA CD-RW but have not
investigated the possibility of using that without Windows installed first.

Subject: Lib 100CT for sale in UK

Hi,

I am going to put one of my Librettos up for auction but I would like to
offer it to the people on the Lib mailing list first.

UK Libretto 100CT with 64 MB RAM upgrade, 2 GB HD, enhanced docking
station, D-Link DE-660CT 10Mb network card (BNC & RJ-45). The OS is NT
4.0 but I can load 95 or 98 if that's what you want, It's complete with
floppy disc drive, mini port replicator, manuals, CD and box. It's seen
very little use and is in perfect condition. I even have a spare hard
drive handle and possibly a spare 2GB hard drive so you can have a
couple of disks with different OSs available.

I live in the county of Cleveland, UK and I can guarantee that this
machine has had very little use. We have four in the family (two 100CTs
and two 110CTs). I have one, my wife has one, my daughter another and
my son a fourth. The problem is my son has absolutely no interest in
computing whatsoever and it has lain virtually unused on my desk since
it was purchased. The time has come to say goodbye and i want it to go
to a good home.

Would anyone like to make me an offer for this before I put it up for
auction.

From: "John Cooper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: Replacing a HDD in Libretto 100CT

Thanks very much for the reply.

What Operating System are you running?
I will be running Windows 98 and am at present on the 2.1Gig drive.

Do you have a desktop PC?
Yes I do. Athlon 800 & Win98se

Do you have a 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter?
I tried to buy one today (no luck). Thought to install in my desktop,
transfer the complete Win98se folder to the new drive, then boot from floppy
and run setup.

Do you have a PCMCIA CDROM drive?
Yes. I have a Freecom CD/RW. If I could somehow make a boot disk which would
give me access to the Freecom, this would be the answer.

Do you still have the 3.5" PCMCIA Floppy drive?
Yes, the original supplied with Libretto.

Do you have the Toshiba Lib100CT Recovery CD?
No, never did get one. All I have is the stack of floppy disks for Win95
installation. I have copied all these to a CDROM.

Do you have a network card?
Yes, I have a Psion PCMCIA network card - 10base2

and any other information you think may be helpful.

I wonder if it is possible to activate the PCMCIA slots from a boot up
floppy and then access the Freecom CD/RW from the A: DOS prompt?

Libretto FDD Driver Win98

2000-07-19 Thread John Cooper

Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 07:43:20 +0100
From: "John Cooper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Libretto FDD Driver Win98

Hi all

I am having some dificulty in getting this message to the maiilist! If you
do receive it more than once, I do apologise.

I have just installed a new 6.4gb hard drive into my Lib 100CT. Prior to
doing this, I installed the 2.5" drive in another PC, formatted it and
copied the entire contents of the WIN98 into a folder named WIN98SE on the
2.5" drive. Having fixed the drive in the Lib, I then started the Lib using
a Win98 boot disk and ran Windows 98 setup. The process was quite painless
and completed okay.

When I restarted the Lib in Win98, I discovered I couldn't access the Lib's
floppy drive! I checked the 'control Panel/system devices' and discovered
the floppy drive was highlighted with an asterix - details showed the Y-E
DATA-External FDD driver was not installed! Where can I get this driver
from?

I would guess that to install the driver files, I could make a 'boot up'
floppy and whilst in DOS copy the Windows drivers from the floppy to the
hard drive and then restart the Lib?

Hope someone can assist.

Regards

John

As many others have discovered, as well as myself, the Garmin eTrex is a
great little unit, similar in size to my Nokia 6100 series mobile phone.
I use mine in the UK with a 50CT, at present with 'Personnel Navigator'
based on '97 OS maps.
This was my main reason for a 6GB hard drive so I could load the whole
mapping of the UK off the CD (448MB)

Does anybody on the list in the UK have any experiance with other mapping
software.

The problem with Personnel Navigator is the lack of street level mapping,
and the fact that you can only go from waypoint to waypoint via a straight
line route, not a road route, with no spoken instructions.

Thankyou,

Michael Heathcote.

Hi Ian

I haven't installed Win2K on my newly acquired Libretto 100CT yet, but I
know why you're having problems.

Windows 2000, like Windows NT, requires all users accessing resources to
have an account. You must create an account for your remote users. You can
do this by right clicking on "my computer" and choosing manage. Then go to
users & group and add a username and give it a password.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Subject: Win2k on 50CT

For those on the list who have installed win2k on their 50ct and lived
to tell about it could you please let me have your comments on my 2
main problems

I recently installed win2k over a fresh win95 factory installation (from
a disk image i kept) and everything went well. I then inserted my xircom
10base T ethernet card and it was installed without any intervention
from me--i was impressed. Even more so when i was immediately able to
access other computers on my network. However the problem i've been
having is that the other systems cannot access the 50ct! Attempts to
access the 50ct from other systems spawn a password prompt and
regardless of what i type the password is always 'incorrect' despite my
having no restrictions on disk access to the 50ct. Any pointers on what
i may have overlooked?

Also, my display is set to 16 colours (SVGA monitor) and i've found no
way to fix this. Any tips on what should be done here? And finally, i
didn't get chance to check the floppy disk drive (but did see a ? mark
next to it in the device manager i believe). Are there any special
drivers needed here also?

Thanks for any help...

Regards,

Ian...

Well I did as you suggested Fran, swung it above my head by the power
cord! Trouble is, my wife walked in and the Lib hit her on the head. In
her temper she threw it against the wall and it bounced out through the
upstairs window, landed on the passenger seat of a convertible, bounced
out and into the window of a taxi traveling West towards London. I'm now
in pursuit.

Hope this story has a happy ending!

No No No! Fran, you *know* that the discs can't handle high
accelerations.
The correct way to dry it is to use a tumble drier.

Heh...Ah, the delights of old technology! Next, it goes up in price as
antique value.

If only they had spares at that price...e.g. 110 case, 110 display, 110
mobo, 110 expanded memory, etc at $10 each :)

The motivation of GREED in the UK is probably the reason.

WinME on Libretto?

2001-09-17 Thread John Cooper

Subject: WinME on Libretto?

Hi all

I have a Libretto 100CT 166MHz with 64Mb RAM & 20Gig hard drive.
Presently I am running Windows 98SE and was wondering whether WinME will
run on this PC?

I'd be interested in users experiences. I have tried Win2K but found it
so slow.

TIA

RE: [LIB] Re: Windows XP - Am I the first SECURITY WARNING

2001-12-29 Thread John Cooper

Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2001 11:29:48 -
From: "John Cooper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: [LIB] Re: Windows XP - Am I the first SECURITY WARNING

This is the info you need!

Unchecked Buffer in UPnP can Lead to System Compromise
Microsoft strongly urges all Windows XP customers to apply the patch
immediately. Customers using Windows 98, 98SE, or ME should apply the
patch if the Universal Plug and Play service is installed and running.
The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) service allows computers to discover
and use network-based devices. Windows ME and XP include native UPnP
services; Windows 98 and 98SE do not include a native UPnP service, but
one can be installed via the Internet Connection Sharing client that
ships with Windows XP. This bulletin discusses two vulnerabilities
affecting these UPnP implementations. Although the vulnerabilities are
unrelated, both involve how UPnP-capable computers handle the discovery
of new devices on the network.

The first vulnerability is a buffer overrun vulnerability. There is an
unchecked buffer in one of the components that handle NOTIFY directives
- messages that advertise the availability of UPnP-capable devices on
the network. By sending a specially malformed NOTIFY directive, it would
be possible for an attacker to cause code to run in the context of the
UPnP service, which runs with System privileges on Windows XP. (On
Windows 98 and Windows ME, all code executes as part of the operating
system). This would enable the attacker to gain complete control over
the system.

The second vulnerability results because the UPnP doesn't sufficiently
limit the steps to which the UPnP service will go to obtain information
on using a newly discovered device. Within the NOTIFY directive that a
new UPnP device sends is information telling interested computers where
to obtain its device description, which lists the services the device
offers and instructions for using them. By design, the device
description may reside on a third-party server rather than on the device
itself. However, the UPnP implementations don't adequately regulate how
it performs this operation, and this gives rise to two different denial
of service scenarios.

In the first scenario, the attacker could send a NOTIFY directive to a
UPnP-capable computer, specifying that the device description should be
downloaded from a particular port on a particular server. If the server
was configured to simply echo the download requests back to the UPnP
service (e.g., by having the echo service running on the port that the
computer was directed to), the computer could be made to enter an
endless download cycle that could consume some or all of the system's
availability. An attacker could craft and send this directive to a
victim's machine directly, by using the machine's IP address. Or, he
could send this same directive to a broadcast and multicast domain and
attack all affected machines within earshot, consuming some or all of
those systems' availability.

In the second scenario, an attacker could specify a third-party server
as the host for the device description in the NOTIFY directive. If
enough machines responded to the directive, it could have the effect of
flooding the third-party server with bogus requests, in a distributed
denial of service attack. As with the first scenario, an attacker could
either send the directives to the victim directly, or to a broadcast or
multicast domain.

I'm guessing you know about - and have patched the security whole in XP
that's big enough to shove the state of Texas through. Buffer
overrun...
and/or PnP something

For our UK brethren,

I came across a company http://www.battery.co.uk/home.htm based in the UK
and had a most informative chat with the guy there. I also got a 10%
discount for the group for telling him I'd post his prices, so here they
are:

PA2497U/2252UR (50/70) £58.50
PA2498U (50/70 extended) £81
PA2502U (100/110) £58.50
PA2503U (extended) £81

All prices should have VAT and P&P added.

These guys can also rebuild battery packs - but *not* LiIon types, which
dischuffs them immensely...apparently there are differences between the
manufacturers cells which cause all sorts of nasties, and their first ten
attempts had eight failures...however they will sell cells if you ask them
very nicely.

(She sells 'C' cells on the sea shore?)

Cheers,

Neil

Thanks Stuart for your reply,

I note your comments re: speed of operation which seem to be at odds with
those of Bill Gates whom I'm sure told us that that each successive release
of Windows was FASTER than it's predecessor, or am I being cynical, lol!!!

John

Dear John,
I cant see any reason why you wont be able to run
Windows ME on your Libretto 100CT. It runs off a
Pentium 166MHz MMX and itonly needs 32 megabytes of
RAM to run. It may however run slower than Windows
98SE but then again in my opinion Windows 98SE runs a
lot slower than Windows 95.
Hope I have been of some help.

Good luck :-)
from Stu
