The Libretto 100 and 110 are not that much bigger than the 50 or 70
*with* the High Capacity battery installed, gets better battery life,
larger display, faster processor, more memory, dual PCMCIA slots
(*great* for a REALPORT modem/LAN adapter!), and as if that wasn't
enough - you can recharge the battery while the lapto is running.

Of course, that is just my opinion, but I think it is shared among
many on the list!

I'd be happy to help out - drop me a private note with your contact info

I may be traveling to the UK soon (Maidenhead area), and could arrange
pickup of payment in local currency/beverages then...

Sorry, my once-a-year party is on the 9th. My wife and I entertain once a
year, that's it. Well, twice, since our son is old enough to have an idea
about birthday parties (5 yrs. old)...

If I miss the party, there will be no joy upon my return - as it is it
lookis like I'll be leaving 2 days after we get back from our Thanksgiving
vacation and returning two days before the party...

Sorry...

You are being a petty fool, and you will regret not spending the $35 + S/H (to your
friend in the US) + S/H (to you from your friend) for your Libretto... I am impressed
that they are still available *at any price*!

This machine was dropped what, 18 months ago, uses a unique, proprietary design, was a
fringe model (at best), and you will *really* want 64 Meg of RAM in your L110 - it
makes a *very big* difference...

Buy it, buy it now, and be happy you were able to upgrade your palmtop. You wouldn't
believe how many folks have IBM PC110s that need more RAM (they only have 4 or 8 meg
built-in, and the 8 and 16 meg upgrades are rarer than hen's teeth! FOlks have been
known to buy palmtops *with* the RAM expansion, just to get the extra RAM!

Robbert,

I have a small box from Hawking that shares serial/modem-based internet
connections, it was about $50, but that is a mediocre solution(it requires a
Win client be installed for configuration, but not use).

I also have an SMC Barricade cable/dsl router, and it has a serial fall-back
if no WAN connection available on the 10baseT connection. It has a four port
switch, a printer router, and can act as a DHCP server, etc. These are
widely available for about $50 after rebates... This is a very nice
solution, IMHO (then you only need to leave the router on, not another whole
computer...

Ken

You are trying too hard - the ma rating of the libretto batteries is printed
right on them, and you know how long the battery lasts, so you can do the
math quite easily...

I think NICAD batteries need something more complex than just a power source
to finish charging... NICAD rechargers are cheap, and the capacity of D
cells are very good...

I like it - this is the one that has a zipper around the edge, right?

It has room for a spare battery, or you can use the two elastic straps to
hold a modem cable/network dongle... The only real downside is that it can
not hold the power adapter, but, the answer to that is to get plenty of port
replicators!

All it took was 2 minutes with Google... using "homepna pcmcia adapter".

I would make a serios assessment of the value of the unit to you, then
investigate replacement machines.

If you value your particular machine, I would consider sending it to
www.micsol.com (an old friend of this list) or your nearby Toshiba
Laptop Repair facility.

Before you take it in, there are a few things you could do:

Remove any expansion RAM and test, if fine, re-install RAM and test
again.

Try holding in the RESET while powering-up - my Portege 3015 was
stuck and needed this to work... The issue seemed to be that my laptop
wanted to resume, but there was no image to resume, so it would reboot,
then it would try and resume, but there was no image, so it would...
Well, you get the idea ;^)

An estimate from a "real" repair facility is a worthwhile investment.
Just advise them upfront of your $$ limits on the repair.

OK, I have to do this:

The installer (IIRC) enforces the 64 meg minimum. Once installed, all bets
are off.

48 Meg is, um, 50% larger than the 32 Meg the original poster's laptop had
in it.

Running Win2K *server* on less than 64 meg of ram is, um, hugely
sub-optimal...

That your friend could do it, does not mean it is practical as an on-going
system,
any use of the machine as *any* kind of non-trivial server would be very
slow, if
at all possible.

Of course, I am not hoping to dissuade anyone from doing it, if only to show
friends what you can boot on your rminimal system.

I has to be software, either pare the installed software down to a workable
minimum, or get a new HD and start over again with a fresh OS install, then
install your drivers and your apps, then your restored data files (from you
regular backup medium of choice)... What, you don't have a backup?

It has got to be software - the HD couldn't corrupt the files just enough to
cause memory leaks, but not bring the system to a halt. (IMHO)

Get a fresh drive and take you rtime (12 Gig HDs are approaching $100 - a
*steal* compared to what I paid for my 3.2 Gig two years ago...)

The *.iso files are images of the CD-ROMs that were included in the book, they
are not the images of the boot floppies.

There should be a /dos or /utility directory, and that will have info on making
the floppies you need.

From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Please help... reinstalling OS on 50ct...

What you will want to do is copy the Win 95 CD onto your libretto, then
remove everything off of your HD *except* what is needed to boot to dos.

THen boot to dos, and run setup from your Win95 cd copy.

You should probably copy over all the drivers as well, so they can be easily
installed.

The trick will be convincing WIn95 that there isn't a later version of
Windows installed.

But, you really should do some repair on that bad HD...

www.west-tech.com has $90 10 Gig drives, $120 20 Gig drives, and $250 for 30
Gig drives, FYI. (all 9.5 mm IBM Travelstars)

I know, my 12 Gig Toshiba gave up the ghost last week, and I need a
replacement for it (for my Tecra 8000, not a Linretto).

I think the key is that the 128 Meg part has never been developed.

I have 2 Portages, a 3015ct and a 3025ct, and have looked for a while at
upgrade options for these machines, the best I could find was a 64 meg part.

Re: Need to reinstall Windows to Libretto 100CT

2001-05-02 Thread Ken Hansen

Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 09:24:44 -0400
From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Need to reinstall Windows to Libretto 100CT

I recently tried to upgrade a Portege 3020ct to Win98, and it was a bear,
only because I didn't have the right tools. I have *full* Win98 CD-ROMs, not
*upgrade* CD-ROMS.

What I wound up doing was nuking the WIn95 install as much as possible (did
you knoww there are hidden, zero-length files in some directories that the
'del' command can not remove?

Anyway, after infliciting major damage by deleting everything I could, and
renaming directories I couldn't empty, I was able to install Win98 on my
machine from a CD-ROM image copied onto my local HD over a network
connection.

Does anyone know how to *upgrade* a Win95 install with a Win98
*full-version* CD? By default, it can not be done (Win98 setup finds the OS
and aborts)...

Thanks,

Ken

Try [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, why not load your OS of choice onto the HD, then install it the
Portege and boot/install from there?

My 3020ct came with afloppy drive, so I simply took my 25 +/- Win95
diskettes from my L50 and installed it on the laptop. THen I added a 3C589
network card, and downlaoded everything else I needed...

I really like my laptop - which hitechcafe.com now has on sale for $479 w/96
Meg RAM, P/300 CPU, 6.4 Gig HD (no OS).

A very reasonable deal, IMHO.

Where did you get your video driver?

Win95 ships with one that is not very good for this machine, the updated/correct one
shipped with the unit on a seperate floppy. I'd check that first.

The driver should be named after a very specific chip (like CT65554 or such), not
SVGA, VGA, or other.

photoshop and other programs won't run because my libretto is not displaying 256
colors.
When I go to the control panel for display settings, it says 16 colors 640X480 pixels.
So I change it to 256 colors, restart, and on startup I get a warning that "there is a
problem with your display settings...they don't work with your hardware." So it resets
to 16 colors. The same happens with the "high color 16 bit" mode.
When I go to the adorable libretto site, it says that all the displays are 16 colors.

What is the key to press on startup to enter BIOS? I hope that I can change something
in there

Re: Overseas access and a great deal on a Portege laptop...

2001-03-14 Thread Ken Hansen

Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 21:32:15 -0500
From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Overseas access and a great deal on a Portege laptop...

Steve,

As it turns out, I think I will go for $24 for 10 hours access, additional
hours at $3-4/hr.

I think I would be hard pressed to use all 10 hours (the wife is coming
along...) in the five days, besides, I can justify $24 as a one-time
expense - compared to the cost of the trip, it is a bargain.

One thing I like to do with vacations is calculate my base burn rate, I take
the amount of money I am paying (let's say $1,000), then divide that by the
number of hours (call it 96, 4 days), then my burn rate is $10/hr just
*being* there (this of course, takes into account the cost of getting there,
the cost of eating while there, and all the disposable purchases I make
while I am there).

My burn rate for this trip is about $25/hr - if I add another $24 to the
total expense of the trip, my cost goes up to $25.20/hr... It is easy, the
ISP is willing to waive any one-time setup fees, so the total out-of-pocket
is $24.

BTW, the Bermudian Phone Co. has a surcharge for spending more than 60
minutes on one call... Interesting.

My ISP (Verizon) does not have any access outside their area.

A 1-800 number will cost me $1+/minute for the call off the island
(remember, this is another country, not another state), and I don't think
1-800 calls work from overseas...

Oh, and about those Porteges - if you throw an 802.11b wirless network card
in one, the need for a CD-ROM drive diminishes quickly. If you rip your
records to MP3 format, the need is gone (for me anyway).

I decided to buy one, and I am glad I did now - they no longer have 96 Meg
RAM models, only 32 Meg ones for $549... When I return from my vacation I
will be selling my L50 kit, which consists of:

L50 w/32 Meg RAM, 3.2 Gig upgrade HD, Std. battery,
AC adpater, mini port replicator, floppy
Extended life battery
Enhanced port replicator
Original packaging/manuals/and a whole lot of diskettes (Win95, drivers,
etc.)

The unit is very, very clean,a nd if anyone would like to make a private
cash offer I would be happy to review them upon my return.

Thanks,

Ken

Overseas access and a great deal on a Portege laptop...

2001-03-13 Thread Ken Hansen

From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Overseas access and a great deal on a Portege laptop...

Hello all,

My question has to do with getting internet acces while on a 5 day vacation in
Bermuda, the best I can come up with is < $30 for about 10 hours access (since I will
only be there for 5 days, not a big problem) - does anyone here have any advice on
providers, alternate access plans?

For reference, see: http://bermuda-online.org/internet.htm

Also, there is a company I like called HiTechCafe in CA that has a great deal on a
real nice (refurb) Portege 3020 laptop - they are $599 w/96 Meg RAM, 6.4 G HD, 10.4"
800x600 TFT display, 56K modem, etc.

For further information, see:
http://www.hitechcafe.com/eshop/inproduct2.asp?sku=PORTEGE%2D3020CT&dept%5Fid=14

(My wife has a Portege 3010, with a slightly slower CPU (P/266 MMX?) and she loves it
- I just wish I could justify one, I might consider displacing my Librettos...)

Please, buy them all so that I am not tempted! I still have the L50 I was going to
sell to defer the price of my L110!

Ken

iGo is havinv a closeout sale, and they have the Targus universal power adapter on
sale for $50 - see
http://www.igo.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/search_all.d2w/report?keyword=42583

I have one, it either comes with, or they will send you free, a L100/110 plug -I think
it comes with an L50/70 plug.

Enjoy,

Have you tried un-installing IE? Or manually renaming the executable? I
think OE is hardwired to open IE,a nd if it can't it may defer to the

Okay let's see who's willing to take a swing at this one :

I've recently switched to opera 5 as the default browser on my

explorer, dialog
boxes etc show the opera icon and clicking any html page or
email attachment
launches opera. Good. I'm also using OE5 as my default mail

here's the strange one: when i click on a link from inside an

launches IE! I haven't yet figured out a way past this

Smells like maybe a registry hack needed here

Subject: RE: Car Power, Wireless Gateways and Virtual CD's

Where did you find the 3Com wireless gateway for $234?
Firstsource has it at over $700?

The rebate on the PCMCIA cards is only good if you buy a 3Com
access point, I'd buy one, if I could get it for a final cost of
< $150 (after the rebate on my previously purchased 3Com
AirConnect PCMCIA cards).

Thanks in advance,

From: "Lee A. Dickinson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Car Power, Wireless Gateways and Virtual CD's

A few things of possible interest:

1) Several people asked me if I was sure that the Mobility
Electronics
MAA-3406-10 air/auto power adapter would work with the L100
because the
literature stated Toshiba 3000 series. Well, I got it and it
works
great. The MAA-3404-10 model which is all over eBay is for the
L50-70
series. Someone pointed out that they had successfully used the
straight
auto voltage for a long time. In addition to being the correct
15v, this
unit has filtering of power line noise. Starter motors can
induce voltage
surges over 100v when the car is started. That's why cell phone
adapters
(cheap ones) say to plug them in after you start the car.
Nobody does
that, but last month my wife's cell phone charger died of this
abuse. I
think this adapter is a good solution. Best price I found
(about $10 less)
was at buy.com Here's a link to them:

http://www.us.buy.com/default.asp

2) I went shopping on zdnet.com for a 3com Wireless gateway and
AirConnect
ethernet card and found a super deal. Most of the 3com Home
Wireless
Gateways were priced from $299 to $349. List is $399. There
was one
company with a price of $234. I thought it was an error. The
AidConnect
was $124 vs. $175 most other places. To top it off, 3com has a
$50 mail-in
rebate that ends with orders postmarked today. Have to hurry if
this
interests you. So, after rebate, what would have cost me $580
for a total
wireless solution ends up $330. Here is a link to the supplier:

http://www.firstsource.com/gen/B2B/FSI/Splash/default.asp

3) I am also in the process of auditioning three different
Virtual CD
programs that I found on zdnet.com. I will post the results.
Right now I
am working with the Paragon CD Emulator product. An advantage
over direct
copy is that it has good compression and takes less space on the
HDD. It
also works slick for those pesky 2-disk programs (like
MapSource) that want
to find the data disk in the same drive that you installed from
and can
detect the difference between autorunning a CD and just trying
to run Setup
from the copied-over files. I installed both CD's in the
Virtual CD drive
and installed from the virtual CD. Works slick, but I still
want to see
what the other products do.

4) I am finding ZDNet to be a great resource. Lots of
downloads of
shareware, and plenty of information. You have probably all been
there, done
that, but here it is:

http://www.zdnet.com/

DISCLAIMER: I have no personal interest in any of these
ventures. I just
thought some of you would find them helpful as I did. To the
rest, I
apologize for the use of bandwidth. Also, with the 3com rebate
running out
today, that news seemed urgent. Best - Lee

From: Ken Hansen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Infrared and Mouse?

Why is this interesting - yo would have to find an IR mouse with the IR port
on the left side of the mouse (not the top), or use a mouse with the laptop
facing to the left of you.

I suspect that is simply where the space was available, and may have
something to do with making the IR ports available when the laptop is in a
port expander. If the IR port were in the back, that would be hard.

I think putting the IR port on the right is simply a convention that goes
back to machines as early as the HP 200 LX palmtop, and also a concession to
the fact that the IR portsa re typically used for computer-accessory
connections, not laptop to laptop networking.

Re: Cheap Lib 100CT's

Subject: Re: Cheap Lib 100CT's

To define better, you are buying at auction "soon". Based on your success at
this auction, you will have some L100's to offer us, at what appear to be
good prices.

It is speculation at this point, and all anyone knows is that *someone* will
buy these units in the near-term, and it might be you. ;^)

WRT the monitors - I'd avoid them, unless you have a use for them. In the
US, a used 17" monitor can be had for *well* under $100US, new they can
still be gotten for *just* under $100US. 15" monitors (refurbs) can be $59
w/ warranty from many established vendors.

For comparison, a 19" monitor (preferable in nearly all circumstances) can
typically be gotten *new* for around $150, $175.

If you are buying these for yourself, keep these prices in mind - if buying
for resale, *halve* the above prices and you may be able to sell them for
that much (the above prices had large companies standing behind them, you
are simply an individual unloading used equipment)...

HTH,

Ken
(Who' like a low-cost L100, but still haven't gotten around to getting rid
of my displaced L50 like I planned to, when I bought my L110 almost *2*
years ago... Has it been that long?)

Linksys Access Point, 3Com cards, no problem w/L110, Portege 650ct and

Broadband access via Linksys Cable/DSL router.

A very nice setup, IMHO...

The L50 only takes 16 Meg upgrades, that the search returned a 32 Meg
upgrade option is an error.

Nothing has changed, the maximum RAM in an L50 is 32 Meg.

Sorry.

If so I'll be very interested in hearing what you find...

From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

You should get two bits to make this easy...

One, a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, typically about $10 each - it
should allow you to set the drive as master/slave.

Two, you would want to get a removeable drive sled - this will
allow you to add/remove the drive from your desktop without
opening the case, these are typically $10-25, depending on
source.

How would I go about using libretto HD in a desktop? for
example, to restore
backup OS to a new HD after the old one crashed.

What kind (and where) of connector to attatch the 2.5" to the
ribbon cable
of the desktop's 3.5" system.

Second: How do i setup the libretto drive as a slave. where are
the jumpers
and what are the settings.

Geez, up the RAM first, then see if you still need to overclock
the unit.

16 Meg is small, esp. for most modern/current OSs and
applications.

The HD upgrade will make things easier, not faster - at least
not significantly faster.

There are reports of folks "frying" their Librettos attempting
to overclock them, IIRC. Besides, you already had one near-death
experience with your libretto...

The improvements I like to make in the following sequence is
this:

Do a over clocking operation. I like to check documents using a
text to speech program to proof read my documents out loud.
There are many grammatical mistakes I can uncover if I can
listen to what I wrote. But this takes 75% of the processors
capability. Kicking it up to 133 mhz
would eliminate the long delays when it is trying to do other
things while talking. Like to do this operation first just in
case.

Would anyone know the best web sight to go to for doing the over
clocking procedure. Then put the ram up to 32 megs. Like to get
6 Gig of hard drive in this tiny machine! Need suggestions and
recommendations! Then upgrade to windows 98.

We will do something, but we don't know what yet.

It will have an OS, but we haven't picked one yet.

Yeah, this is why they dropped the Librettos - the machine they describe

This is not a Win modem - it is a regular modem (I don't think Xircom makes
*any* win modems).

If you question it, punch up their web site and download the manual it will
tell you for sure.

These are used Pulls from working equipment. Not new. I tend to have good
luck with these things... I bought 3 $15 3Com PCMCIA cards from them, and
they sent me one wrong cable - all I had to do was mention to them that
there was a problem and the replacment cable was in the mail the next day
(Priority USPS - they spent $3-4 to send me a replacement cable for a $15
card!

That shows me that they are interested in making me happy.

Oh, by the way, the cards all worked (and looked) great, and the
cables/dongles they sent me were all brand-new, not used!

OEM means no drivers, no user manual, etc.

Retail means it is packed just as it would be at, say, a compusa or other
retailer.

Same card, same warranty, less *stuff*.

All drivers should be available over internet, and are probably included in
most OS (these are *very* standard cards).

Wow... I checked that site and sawe these 3COM models:

--

3CCFEM556-BOX 3Com 3CCFEM556 10/100 Ethernet + 56k v.90 Modem ,True modem!,
Cellular Rdy, Full retail Boxed Lifetime Warranty from 3Com$89.00

3CCFEM556-OEM 3Com 3CCFEM556 10/100 Ethernet + 56k v.90 Modem ,True modem!,
Cellular Rdy, OEM Card & Cable ONLY$79.00

--

Cellular is still something I haven't hopped on yet, but if these will hook
up to a standard cellular connection of some kind, it'd make this model
attractive to me.

Any idea what the difference between OEM and Retail is? Software? I'm
guessing I could get the software from the 3COM site if that's the only
difference... right?

It says 2.5 x .5 which leads me to believe it is .5 inch, or 12mm, high
which will not fit any Libretto!

That is probably not a Winmodem, Winmodems are aimed at the low-end of the
market, and this type of card is not a low-end item.

The card you mention is good, I also like 3Com, checkout
www.centrix-intl.com (from memory) - they have 10/100 and 56K combo cards
for well under $100.

Ken,

I haven't been following this thread as closely as I should have been. I'm
looking at getting a ethernet/56k modem for my 50CT, and was expecting to
pay over $100 at least. But I went to the site you mentioned and for the
following:

  http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=NCXCCEM56100

Which is a:

XIRCOM:CEM56-100,10/100MBPS ETHERNET & 56K MODEMCOMBO,PCMCIA,WITH
RJ45 CONNECTOR,NEW PULL,OEM

For $56! I don't know much about this technology, except I would guess this
must be a software 'Win' modem, and not a hardware modem for that price.

Any suggestions for a good deal for one of these combo cards?

You want two cards and a crossover cable. An example of the crossover cable
would be:

http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=ACGNRJ453C

Or a hub would be good - you can get them quite cheaply - but the crossover
cable performs the same function as a hub. A low-cost hub ($27.95) would be:

http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=HUDLDE805TP

or 10/100 support at $38.95:

http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/prdtinfo.asp?prdt=HUSM5604DS

These would be good investments for future upgrade plans - 8+ port hubs are
a bit more, but well under $100...

The 3Com cards come with everything you need, save the crossover cable above
($4.95) to hook two machines together. These cards come without drivers, but
both Win95 & Win98 have the required driers included in the distributions.
More current drivers can be downloaded over the internet if needed.

Libretti are, as you remember, unaffected by the floppy controller bug that
lead to the class action lawsuit.

As an update, I did get my $434 for each of my two laptops that were
affected (a Tecra 8000 bought @ $1200, PII/266, 64 Meg & 4 Gig w/12.1"
800x600 TFT display and 3 year warranty, and a Portege 3015 bought for
$1100), and I did get my two $225 Freecards, and my 2x3Com Airconnect cards
are on their way to me as I write this.

Effective cost of the Tecra 8000 is $766, before $225 Freecard.

Effective cost of the Portege 3015 is $666, before $225 Freecard.

But, I did have to wait about 13 months to get my refund/settlement/whatever
you want to call it.

BTW, I bought the Tecra when they announced the settlement was to be
finalized, in anticipation of participating in the settlement.

The issue with the 12 Gig drives was, IIRC, because of default settings for
the particular drive, not to overcome some basic "flaw" in the Librettos

Here's one for the old-timers on the list: Remember the flap when MP3

The MicroDrive is actually a CF card-format device, that has a PCMCIA Type
II adapter included.

The largest type III PCMCIA HD I have ever seen is 1 gig.

The largest Type II PCMCIA HD is 500 Meg.

I have no idea how you could cram 8 Gig into a Type [II/III] format card -
there really *has* to be an external part tethered to the PCMCIA card...

external case? The largest PCMCIA card I have seen is 1 gig - the IBM
MicroDrive.

Well, I would suggest getting a drive tray like this
(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?sku=TC
1-8000) to make it easy to insert/remove the drive into your desktop PC,
then I would look for one of the adapter kits like this
(http://www.dirtcheapdrives.com , click on web store, then Brackets, then
IDEKIT-2.5) to install the notebook drive in the above drive tray.

Then you can rebuild the drive contnents easily, without tearing your
computer case off...

From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Low-cost HD upgrade for libretto owners...

at 9.5 mm you should be fine - I simply had to push a bit harder than normal
to squeeze a 3.2 Gig 9.5 mm drive into my L50. And since my L110 came with a
4 Gig HD, I have not had a reason to upgrade it (yet), but it is designed
for 9.5 mm drives.

For the L50, the suggestion from most is to simply loosen the case screws to
give you room to insert the drive, then tighten up the screws/case.

My low-priced drive is destined for my new toy, a Portege 650ct I got off
ebay for $180 + $16 S/H, a P133 w/32 Meg RAM, 1.3 Gig HD and an 11.3" TFT
800x600 display. I got the drive for $69, a drive tray/sled for $15, and S/H
is under $10 - not a bad little upgrade, IMHO.

I just with the 64 Meg RAM upgrade was less than $150 :^(

Low-cost HD upgrade for libretto owners...

From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Low-cost HD upgrade for libretto owners...

I just ordered from www.dirtcheapdrives.com a 4.3 Gig 9.5mm 2.5" IDE drive for $69.
The drive is an IBM DA24320 4.3 Gig HD with 4200rpm speed. This seems like a great
price, esp. for folks looking for low-cost upgrades, as opposed to going for the
maximum HD size.

A 4.3 Gig HD is a nice size drive, plenty of room for dual OSs, or plenty of MP3 files
(if so inclined).

Enjoy,

Ken

(At this price, along with US S/H under $10, I have to ask why *anyone* would stay at
850 Meg on an L50!)

You can install Win2k without a bootable CD-ROM, by looking for a
"bootdisk.exe" or "makeboot.exe" or some similar name. Microsoft doesn't
advertise it very much, as they want youto run Win2K on nice new machines
(made inthe last few years), which are *almost* guaranteed to have bootable
CD-ROM drives.

HTH, please respond back to the list regarding your drive experiences - I am
considering a 12 Gig upgrade for my L110, for nice, big, dual-OS
configuration...

I didn't do anything more than remove and replace the RAM. It is a Kingston

Although David mentioned this before feezing most often is the result of HD
bad sectors and RAM falure in my case Libretto feezes when I touch phone
plug in 3COM card. Pulling the card out prevent me from reboot.

www.radioshack.com has a unit on sale for $20 incl. power adapter, a carry

think.

12V 3.5 Amp battery (lead acid)

I will be getting one to play with...

My L110 is *issing me off!

2000-11-16 Thread Ken Hansen

Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 08:56:36 -0500
From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: My L110 is *issing me off!

My L110 has decided to start freezing up at odd times, limiting it's
usefulness to me...

I am running the initial OS install of Win98, with no significant changes to
OS.

What seems to be happening is the sysyem will just stop, and the mouse will
disappear. If I am on the network, all activity stops, and the display
remains on, but frozen.

A power-down is required, with a scandisk (since windows was not shut down
properly), that sometime itself will freeze (or take so long to move to the
next percent done that I power-cycle and restart, usually it will get into
the 80s or 90s, then it will sit on one percentage point and I will wait 10
minutes or so, and seeing no disk activity or motion in percent done, will
power cycle).

Up until about two weeks ago this machine ran fine, able to stay up for
hours at a time, does anyone have any ideas? It is possible I performed some
recent MS update, but there doesn't seem to be a direct correlation between
the two events, but I can not be 100% sure.

Has anyone seen problems like this before?

Any advice?

Should I simply attempt an update from MS update service, and if that fails
consider the OS to be questionable and re-install the OS?

The commonality among all teh failures, now that I think about it, may be
Outlook 2000 - I didn' t relize it until right now, but that is always
running in the forground when the error occurs...

Hmm,

Ken

Re: L100CT motherboard

2000-11-08 Thread Ken Hansen

Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 07:16:01 -0500
From: "Ken Hansen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: L100CT motherboard

Where there any dramatic event in the life of your L100 *just before* it
stopped working?

What are the symptoms you are encountering:

Have you tried multiple power sources - including different batteries?
Does it appear to charge the battery?
Does it properly indicate power is available (AC adapter)?

Does it do anything when you try and boot?

Did you have the speaker turned off - one way a bad I/O device is
flagged
on powerup is by a series of beep codes - when the unit worked?

Have you tried reseting the unit - apply power, press power switch and
stick
a pin in the small reset hole (location on an L100 unknown)?

Please provide as much information as possible - I hope your problem can be
diagnosed that way - I suspect that repairing an L100 motherboard may not be
practical (size, density, etc.) - I suspect that the MB is considered
non-repairable by Toshiba, it is probably simply swapped out for these types
of problems...

Sorry,

Ken
(Whose L110 is acting a bit hinkey as well - but I suspect the
OS/application software. Outlook Express has frozen on me several times,
requiring a power cycle to regain control of the system. Damn Win98...)

If you can afford it, places like igo.com offer long-life external batteries
that are generic, not designed for specific laptops...

I assume you have an extended Toshiba battery for your L50? I found them to
be reasonable, of course my L110 has a *great* battey life, and cna recharge
while in use, but that doesn't help you (unless you upgrade!)...

19 October] If you own a Libretto 70, check your hard drive today! The
latest L70s have been shipping with a 2.1GB HD instead of the 1.6GB HD
stated in the specifications, but altered so you only see the first 1.6GB.
(Apparently, the 1.6GB HD is out of production...) Many lucky people have
already reported having the larger 2.1GB HD :).

Note: It has been determined that the only way to get the L70 to see and
recongnize all 2.1GB is to download and install the older 6.20 BIOS. The
6.30 & 6.40 BIOS has disabled support and will not be able to use or see all
2.1GB of this hard drive (bad Toshiba, bad!).

The BIOS has been mucked with to make it look like a smaller drive - an
older BIOS will fix that issue...

I also recently came across an old "Pres Release" describing the use of the
