I agree with your point that emacs' replace capabilities look more powerful.
However, at this stage, it would be an overkill for me, as I am not a heavy
text editor user.

I guess, it is great that we have so many options today (with a number of
open source apps).

I wasn't sure if this would constitute a meaningful data point, but I do
use Lilypond extensively and only ever use vim (without syntax
highlighting). For the most part, navigation is no problem for me as I
use a very specific formatting, with comment markers indicating
different sections of a piece, so even in a full orchestral score it's
still usable to keep all the parts in a single file. (Layout specific
details like \layout and \paper blocks, macro definitions, and other
necessary boilerplate, are kept in different files, though, to minimize
distraction from the actual music.)

Interestingly (perhaps only to me), the only other place I feel like I took
a step backward in changing editors is that the (in-file) find/replace
mechanisms in sublime text are clunkier, especially since you can't use
them macros.

I rather prefer emacs' M-x query replace or M-x replace-string to the
sublime text approach of multiple selection.

Some of the things I do prefer are the "airplane view" navigation within
the current file, the project/workspace features for directory-tree
navigation across multiple files, tabs for open files, and the
find-in-files feature that searches within a directory across files and
produces results, with context, whose results are linked, so you can jump
to editing any of the results files.

Plus there are a wealth of syntax highlight themes, existing key commands
and custom key commands.

2015-11-07 Thread John Aten
No worries. I'll keep working on it.

I couldn't get the syntax highlighting even when I moved the file to a
directory, in the runtime path, that other plugins load out of just fine.
Oddly, the syntax highlighting works if I source the lilypond.vim file from
within vim with the source command.

Well, I'm not looking for a tool for my own use, and
https://github.com/wbsoft/frescobaldi/commits/manuscript-viewer?author=uliska=1
(through page 11) may serve as an indication that I *am* aware of
Frescobaldi :-/

There may be numerous reasons why one would want to edit LilyPond files
with a non-IDE editor but still want things like syntax highlighting or
the other tools mentioned in this thread.
But what I'm actually after is a non-comprehensive list of types of
LilyPond editing environments.

I mostly use jEdit.

Me too.

IDE-wise, I feel safer with minimalist homegrown, even if primitive.
Editorwise, I don't want/need templates, prompting or autocompletion.

Some relevant things jEdit offers vs Notepad:
 - several views of one buffer, eg for several voices in one file
 - splittable text area, eg for several voices in several files
 - hypersearch, eg for navigating between similar things
 - syntax highlighting - maybe a bit weak but good enough for me
And I occasionally use
 - bracket matching - especially with Scheme!
 - rectangular selection
 - multiple selection
 - (my halfbaked transposition) macros

There was a lilypondtool-plugin for jEdit warranting LilyPond-specific
highlighting and autocompletition, though the developer stopped work
on it. Last release was 12.1.2010, afaict.

I found jEdit's LilyPond indenting unsatisfactory, and worked with
Bertalan Fodor to improve it (just before that date).
It was still confused by Scheme sections then, but I now have
a rather clunky way to cope with one level of nesting - all I need.

Cheers,
Robin

1+ for Sublime Text. I am very happy with a Sublime Text / Frescobaldi combo.

One of my favorite features with Sublime Text is multiple selections. It is
a time saver when it comes to selecting and changing the name for a number
of note, variable, or function instances.

There’s a bundle that provides LilyPond syntax highlighting for TextMate:

https://github.com/textmate/lilypond.tmbundle

TextMate is mac only ( http://macromates.com/ ) but I think I have seen other
text editors support the TextMate bundle format.

Emacs doesn't try to be an IDE. It tries to be an operating system.

I mostly use jEdit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedit
nice colored and customizable highlighting and a lot of features which
can be added.

For simple tasks gedit, in terminal nano.

There was a lilypondtool-plugin for jEdit warranting LilyPond-specific
highlighting and autocompletition, though the developer stopped work
on it. Last release was 12.1.2010, afaict. He posted it on this list,
too lazy to search it, though.

Honestly, the LilyPondTool was always a little buggy and I rarely
needed it, but I love the jEdit-way ;)

I use an app called Koder on iOS. It does syntax highlighting and some
keyword completion for LilyPond files straight out of the box. It's not
particularly useful for heavy or even medium weight lifting, but it's great
for a quick proofread when I'm away from my main machine.

Subject: LilyPond-aware text editors

Hi all,

does anyone know of LilyPond-aware text editors? I was always
considering the steps
- plain text editor
- enhanced editor
- IDE

but suddenly have the impression that the second one doesn't actually
exist.

What I consider an enhanced editor is a tool that gives at least syntax
highlighting for LilyPond, and optionally one or more of the following:
- code completion
- input helpers
- music functions
- indenter/linter

What it would *not* have (because then I'd consider it an IDE) is any
form of integrating compilation, console output, viewer.

Is there *any* tool around that offers more than a notepad application
but doesn't try to be an IDE?

Best
Urs

On Windows, I use EditPad Pro. No help with input/completion, but brace
matching, syntax highlighting, autoindent, etc.

Hi Urs,

Amongst other things, syntax-colouring is totally customizable. I wrote a basic
Lilypond syntax-colour plist 11 years ago (cf.
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2004-01/msg00668.html), but I
have no idea if it still works; in any case, it wouldn’t be hard to fix/improve
it.

Hope this helps!
