*Making a Meadow: Easy Tips for Incorporating a native meadow with Lincoln
Common Ground and Eco-Gardener Diana Rice-Sheahan*

Gardening to counter climate change may seem overwhelming, but did you know
that it’s much easier for the homeowner in the long run than maintaining a
turf grass lawn or traditional gardens? You can free yourself from mowing,
using chemicals, gas and lots of water to maintain your landscape. Once
you’ve learned a few techniques and established a tight knit community of
the right plants in the right place, you will enjoy a beautiful, healthy,
and low maintenance landscape.

Come to Diana's wondrous garden and learn how to garden with a regenerative
approach. Restore a healthy water cycle, build the soil, and support
biodiversity without spending a lot of time or money. You don’t need to be
an expert to do it!

Diana Rice-Sheahan is a professional fine artist, art teacher and lifelong
eco gardener. She moved to a house in Lincoln that had been abandoned for
at least ten years. With limited money and time, Diana has transformed an
invasive plant infested yard into a welcoming, comfortable, vibrant oasis
that benefits all the creatures that are integral to our ecosystem,
especially the humans! When she isn't gardening or spending time with her
family, she paints expressionist landscapes.

[LincolnTalk] Tips for Eco-Friendly Gift Giving this Holiday Season

2021-12-08 Thread Emily Haslett
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world
around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind
of a difference you want to make.”— Jane Goodall

*Mothers Out Front Lincoln *would like to share some "green tips" for
sustainable gift giving this holiday season. These were printed today in
the new "Green Corner" of the Lincoln School's Mini-Link! 🌍

Gift an Experience

Instead of giving “traditional” gifts, consider some Zero Waste options for
a warm and connected holiday season.

   -

Give museum memberships or theater tickets for an opportunity to spend
time together and share things you love. Fabric of a Nation-American
   Quilt Stories is at
the Museum of Fine Arts until Jan 17, 2022. Families with young children
might enjoy a membership to the Discovery Museum
   .
   -

Make a donation to an organization/cause that your friend/family member
cares about. How about bidding on the PTO Auction

as a gift for a loved one?

Zero Waste Gifts

Introduce your friends/family to your favorite Zero Waste products! Here
are a few of our favorites:

   -

   Shampoo/conditioner bars: Ethique or HiBar
   .
   -

Blueland for all your cleaning products.
Plastic-free packaging, glass bottles. The non-toxic products come as
tablets so they are lightweight to ship.
   -

Tru Earth laundry strips, also easy and
lightweight to ship and use no plastic.
   -

   Raw Elements reef-safe sunscreen in
   metal tins.
   -

Gift certificates to a consignment store. Great for teenagers who are
   into vintage clothes! Buffalo Exchange
for a local option, or Poshmark and thredUP
    for online.
   -

For dry cleaning, consider giving a reusable drycleaning bag and avoid
all those individual plastic bags: Green Garmento

   -

   Bites , an alternative to
   traditional toothpaste in plastic tubes.
   -

   Marley’s Monsters for fabric, reusable
   “unpaper towels”.
   -

A subscription to residential pickup with Black Earth Compost
   !

Alternative Ideas

   -

Talk with your extended family to give gifts just to children, or pick
names and each person buys one “bigger gift” for one person.
   -

Discuss having it be a “gently used” Yankee Swap. (The transfer station
Swap Shed has a wealth of treasures!)
   -

Swap “consumables” – cookies or other homemade treats, paperwhite bulbs.
   -

As always, try to shop local and purchase from artists and artisans as
much as possible. Have you visited the DeCordova Museum store lately?

Remember, you don’t have to embrace all these changes, but even one or two
changes make an impact (and may help a loved one make changes as well).

[LincolnTalk] SEEKING to BORROW OR RENT A LARGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE SUV or MINIVAN from 12/26-12-31

2021-11-12 Thread Emily Haslett
Hi Lincoln neighbors,

We are looking to borrow or rent a large, 4 wheel drive vehicle to
accommodate our large adult children who will be in Lincoln around the
holidays. We have downsized to two Priuses (which we would be happy to
swap) from 12/26-12/31.

This is an experiment for us, a first try at the "shared economy" in the
spirit of having a lighter carbon footprint whenever possible.

Please contact us if you are interested and feeling generous!!

Thank you!

[LincolnTalk] Let's participate in Black Earth Compost's GREAT SUBURBAN DRAWDOWN CHALLENGE

2021-10-02 Thread Emily Haslett
Hi Lincoln Composters, Gardeners, and Lovers of nature,

*Black Earth Compost,* our favorite compost business that makes it possible
for us to compost in Lincoln at the Transfer Station, from our homes, and
hopefully soon at our new NET ZERO school, is hosting a Great Suburban
Drawdown Challenge where you can
turn your yard into a "*Carbon Sink.*"

What does this mean? It means that "an annual application of compost would
greatly benefit your yard's soil health and your overall carbon footprint
by *increasing healthy plant growth* and thus carbon sequestration." *Healthy
soil, healthy plants and healthy trees return up to "**26% of human caused
emissions to the earth." *

*HOW *can *YOU* participate? Black Earth's compost truck will "be snaking
its way through Lincoln" *October 11th-15th* "delivering a yard or more of
compost, sufficient for your trees and a small lawn." Just think, thanks to
all of your fantastic composting efforts, you will be receiving some of
your own food scraps in the form of beneficial compost for your outdoor
spaces and for carbon drawdown.

SIGN UP HERE and/or check out
their website .

*If 7 home owners were to spread just 1/2 inch of compost over their lawn,
it would be enough to drawdown nearly one metric ton of CO2 emissions over
a span of 3 years. (Ryles, 2013) *

*Lincolnites, this challenge could mark the beginning of our committing to
using our yards, open spaces and farms to sequester as much carbon as
possible-- another way to reverse global warming which is accelerating
before our eyes. *

With thanks for working together to make a difference for all children's
futures,
*Mothers Out Front Lincoln *and the *Lincoln Garden Club*

[LincolnTalk] AN UPDATE ON THE RE-IMAGINED SWAP SHED

2021-09-08 Thread Emily Haslett
Greetings Fans and Supporters of the Lincoln Swap Shed from the Zero Waste
Lincoln Committee (formerly the Recycling Committee) and Mothers Out Front
Lincoln,

What a successful re-opening of the Swap Shed thanks to the collaboration
of stellar volunteers, the DPW, Mothers Out Front Lincoln, and all of you--
generous Lincoln residents!

You have shown your commitment to the new "Rs": *REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE,
REPURPOSE, RECYCLE/ROT. *Together we can raise awareness about our
consumption and shopping habits and take action to change them. There is no
"away" when throwing something in the trash; rather it is burned in the
Wheelabrator incinerator in North Andover polluting the air of our
neighbors and causing asthma and other significant health issues. The
earth's resources are finite and cannot be eternally extracted to make more
"stuff" for us. This summer has shown us the tipping point towards which we
are heading.

Some joyful stories from the Swap Shed since April:

~ A smiling, 4 year old "shopper" chooses an 8 year old's beloved
firefighter's jacket as his one treasure to bring home on his first ever
visit with Dad to the Swap Shed
~ A Caregiver shrieks with delight as she rocks in the perfect chair she
will bring home to the elder she cares for
~ A Codman Farm board member is delighted when a neighbor drops off a huge
screen perfect for the upcoming Movie nights at the farm
~ A Lincolnite delivers a pint of fresh blueberries for the volunteer on
duty one Saturday afternoon

There are many vignettes that match these, many instances of neighborly
exchange and acts of generosity, many random encounters with old friends
and connections made with new ones.

A *HUGE THANK YOU *to the *VOLUNTEERS *who have generously devoted hours to
greeting neighbors and sorting, cleaning, and tending the voluminous
"stuff" that comes to the Swap Shed! This bountiful town resource would not
exist without their time and dedication. There are quiet angels who sort
books, bring large furniture to ReStore for unhoused folks to decorate
their new apartments, deliver baby items to Household Goods in Acton, and
resell items on platforms that help all of us *reuse *rather than buy new.
Please treat all volunteers and DPW staff with *RESPECT and KINDNESS! *

*PLEASE SIGN UP HERE
<https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e48a9ab2ba0f85-swap> TODAY FOR A
SHIFT! *We need everyone's help to make this work.

** Remember, all items in the old Swap Shed, regardless of condition, were
thrown away at the end of each Wednesday or Saturday. Now a resourceful
team works to find new homes for everything to keep useful items out of the
incinerator and to reduce the temptation to buy something new from a big
box store, where the average life of something is 6 months!

*NEW POLICIES: *

*~ *In the spirit of finding new homes for everything, Lincolnites who wish
to *resell *items are invited to come to the Swap Shed from 2-2:45*pm each
Wednesday and Saturday *to take items they would like to resell. Again, in
the past, all of these items would have been thrown in the dumpster.

~ *All items must be clean and sorted*. Please wipe and wash everything
before coming and only bring items you would want to bring into your home.

*~ Unpack your bags and boxes and place all items in the appropriate
sections. *

The Swap Shed is a community resource run by YOU, Lincoln volunteers and
Mothers Out Front Lincoln. Let's work together to make it a happy and fun
place to be and show up as our best, most generous, and thoughtful selves.

Please reach out directly with any questions or suggestions to Emily
Haslett of Mothers Out Front Lincoln at *emhasl...@gmail.com
. *

With gratitude for our town's cooperation and commitment to each other, to
our neighbors near and far, and to positive change for the planet,

[LincolnTalk] Seeking to borrow a 36" length wire, folding dog crate :)

2021-09-08 Thread Emily Haslett
Hi Lincoln friends,

We would love to borrow a *medium sized (36" length) wire, folding dog
crate* for our puppy who is growing daily before our eyes. She has outgrown
our 24" length crate and is not quite ready for our large, 48" length
crate. We plan to return it or pass it on once she has outgrown it.

Thanks so much!
