[LincolnTalk] Oil company recommendation?

2024-05-24 Thread Joan Kimball
Does anyone have a recommendation of a heating oil company?

We used Concord Oil for years and had no problems. Then they sold it.

New company came to do annual service today and now the heater is on on
this hot weekend. (One day in winter, we ran out of oil. This never
happened in 50 years with Concord Oil.)

Any suggestions of another heating oil company?

Thanks,

There was substantial discussion, maybe even consensus, on a none of
the above option. Even a planning board member and some of the “working

Yet when the vote came up for a warrant article, that was not mentioned.
Another part of the discussion was the fact that town meeting
determination is “skewed“ by attendance and timing. I have observed this to
 be absolutely true.
It is my belief that something which will so radically transform our
community should be voted on in some form by secret ballot. It is also my
belief that that will never happen.

[LincolnTalk] HVA

2023-11-13 Thread Joan Kimball
I feel fortunate to live here and one of the reasons is Lincoln's ability
to rise in positive ways to meet challenges.

Moving to Lincoln in the early 70s, we were glad that Lincoln's response to
housing needs and 40b was to build Lincoln Woods.( We recently went on a
tour of Lincoln woods, and the sense of community is impressive.) .And the
Town also had a thoughtful plan to protect open space that would result in
protecting wildlife corridors. Two important factors fir me.

Today Massachusetts once again has a serious housing crisis, and we are
once again required to meet the challenge.

I understand people are concerned. And that there is concern by both
individuals and by individuals working together in a group.

Reading Lincoln Talk, I first became aware that a group of five was
investigating the HCA and the actions of Lincoln's working group. I read in
Lincoln Talk that the group now has 55 members. And yesterday I read there
is a similar group in Newton and probably in other towns.

We need to remember that there are other views, not coordinated, and not
necessarily expressed on Lincoln Talk or at the Forum.

While zoning does give those of us in "the lifeboat" control, it also has
resulted in exclusion. Many studies show this. I recommend that people
watch 2 webinars presented by the Boston Foundation.(See below for links.)

I applaud the work of the Town's working group and their expressed goals
including Lincoln's character, awareness of climate change, and providing
housing near our transportation area. (I know that Lincoln will do what it
can to raise the limit of 10% affordable that HCA has imposed.)

May we work together and rise up once again to do our part in a creative
way to help solve serious housing crisis that affects individuals and
families as well as the Massachusetts's economy

Respectfully, Joan Kimball

Greater Boston Housing Report Card 2023

Greater Boston faces a crippling housing shortage, the effects of which are
most destabilizing for moderate- and low-income families and families of
color in the region. The Greater Boston Housing Report Card highlights how
the region has been falling behind on housing production, and how housing
cost burdens have been increasing, making rental housing and homeownership
increasingly unaffordable.

Exclusionary by Design: Zoning as a Tool of Race, Class and Family
Exclusion

As part of a new Racial Wealth Equity Research Center initiative, Boston
Indicators commissioned Amy Dain, among the region’s leading zoning
experts, to research and write Exclusionary by Design: An Investigation of
Zoning’s Use as a Tool of Race, Class, and Family Exclusion in Boston’s
Suburbs, 1920 to Today. Based on extensive review of local planning
documents, state reports, and press coverage over the past 100 years, the
report finds widespread use of zoning as a tool of social exclusion against
residents of color, especially Black residents; lower-income and
working-class residents; families with school-aged children; religious
minorities; immigrants; and, in some cases, any newcomers/outsiders at all.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Why Lincoln should overlay HCA zoning over existing multi-family districts

2023-11-07 Thread Joan Kimball
Tricia, thank you so much. You have captured how I have been feeling and
thinking.

Lincoln Talk gives us an opportunity to share opinions and differences. And
that's great.

But there are a few who pounce as if they are prosecuting attorneys and
judges all in one, pounce sometimes personally, sometimes nastilly.

Town officials, volunteers like.you and me , through time have worked hard
and created the Lincoln we have today.

Our current officials are doing.the same. It takes vision, hard work and
meetings til midnight and constancy through issue by issue,. They can't
have the luxury to pounce.

The RLF has brought so much to the town in helping to shape it with
creativity and brilliance. Preserving land, creating a shopping center,
helping with housing, creating the Lincoln we love.

We moved here in 1974, from Weston, valuing Lincoln, the land, the ethos,
the creativity that established open space and Lincoln Woods, the
preservation of farm lands and the community, working together. There have
always been differences of opinion and we have managed to find solutions

So can we, please, move forward--all of us who share deep feelings about
Lincoln-- showing respect for each other.

Re: [LincolnTalk] HCA & Codman Road

2023-10-16 Thread Joan Kimball
Thank you David for your clear message. I agree with each town doing
their part to help the housing crisis we are facing. And besides, it's the
law.

Senator Barrett at one point said, we have the jobs and we have workers,
but not adequate housing for them.

I certainly benefit from other towns' services and businesses. We are
not living in a vacuum.

I treasure our town's open space, and as a former Conservation Commission
member when we wrote the Wetland Bylaw, I treasure the services for nature
and for us that our protected wetlands provide. These lands will not be
built upon. And there will be site reviews.

Re: [LincolnTalk] 15 units per acre

2023-10-03 Thread Joan Kimball
Thank you, John. I agree.

I support the work of the Housing Choice Committee, the selects and RLF on
implementing the housing choice act so that it fits Lincoln. The
presentation at the state of the town was impressive and showed hundreds of
hours of high quality thought and work.

We have good bylaws and regulations that will ensure good results. 40% of
our town is in conservation. And we protect our wetlands.

[LincolnTalk] [Spring Concert to benefit SVdP and the food pantry

2023-06-01 Thread Joan Kimball
Thanks to the volunteers at SVdP not only for the impressive work they do
all year but also, in this case, for the superb Spring Concert last
Tuesday at Pierce Park.

It was a beautiful evening in every way.

The music was wonderful. ( I don't have the names of the musicians; they
were all outstanding!)

We sat on our chairs and blankets, a deligted and happy audience.

 Children danced with happiness.

The weather was perfect.

The cause so important.

A time to cherish.

[LincolnTalk] School discussion

2023-01-28 Thread Joan Kimball
I too have been following rhe school discussion: the questions by 2 of us
and the explanations by several of us, some by members of the school cm and
fin com.

And I want to express appreciation to

--the school committee-- volunteers-- who spend vast amounts of time,
thought and energy on our behalf.

--the candidates for school committee

--the teachers and staff who spend their whole selves teaching the whole
children of Lincoln and Hanscom.

--the administration whose vision and attention to detail make such a
difference.

I have also been watching the interviews for superintendent and am
impressed with their vision, experience and skill in answering questions.

There will always be different points of view--they will be addressed-- and
still we need to appreciate all that is going well.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Passing Of Esther Braun

2022-11-28 Thread Joan Kimball
Dear Peter,
Esther was a terrific fifth grade teacher. She was an especially science
teacjer Our son was one of her many appreciative students, and we,
appreciative parents. I remember especially going on a field trip on the
Drumlin and we all--students and parents learned so much from Esther,
geology, solar system, nature in its wholeness.

I enjoyed seeing her at Concord concerts and at Carleton Willard. She
leaves a great legacy.

it’s convenient to have LT in there with the rest. If I had to log in

who complained about the long email threads and the difficulty of figuring
out who was replying to whom and on what topic. But this is an issue
mainly during a (complicated) discussion, such as the ongoing one on the
community center. Although I suppose LT could be improved, I don’t think
that it’s really “broken” so let’s not try to fix it.

If using Google Groups or Groups.io requires having a Google account
and logging in to that, no thanks. As with Slack, that is an extra step,
and an extra place to go to read the LT messages. The beauty of the
email-based list is that it's right in with other daily communication. It
is so basic that it works for all, whereas I suspect any "other 'modern'
group communication platform" may require a subscription, which is a
turnoff, regardless if it is free.

I know some people are logged in to Google all the time, but not
 everyone wants to do that.

is badly outdated and we should leave for a better service. I would suggest
migrating us from Mailman to either Google Groups or Groups.io. There are
migration tools so that we wouldn't lose the archive, plus everything would
become searchable and easier to navigate.

Who actually runs the infrastructure for LT anyway? 🤔

Re: [LincolnTalk] Slack instead of Mailman?

2022-11-14 Thread Joan Kimball
We are a very small town (around 5000 without Hanscom) and I am
appreciative of having this community service on line. What firs s really
small town might not fit a larger suburb/town.

And I appreciate so much the volunteers who moderate it.

And I think discussions of issues good, especially when we are civil. It
makes for better town meetings.

And the bulletin board aspect where we share what we need, what we no
longer need, service providers is great.

I lived here for years without LincolnTalk, and I much prefer with LT.

So, thanks.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Why hasn’t a call from the town or the water department been made town wide to talk about the drought restrictions?

2022-08-01 Thread Joan Kimball
Hi. Not any change in water use, just this most serious condition. Its not
a "normal" drought condition.

People can take responsibilty of finding out a loosening of conditions or
finding out less serious driughts by reading signs

This is a serious condition for our environment and we need to take care of
it..

We can, of course, differ on how to publicize this.

I am fine with a postcard or flyer. I am seeing people still watering
their lawns2x a week. And they may just not know.

Many many people are not on LT or the Squirrel, who may not frequent
Lincoln Rd to see signs. We all need to know.

I won't write again.

Joan

drought situation. It was decided that this mode of communication should be
reserved for emergencies requiring immediate action (water main breaks
 etc.).

*Obviously*, the sooner a drought situation is addressed, the better.
Sandwich boards have been placed at locations around town with
 drought information.
An insert relating to the drought situation is going out with the next
water bill. The water bills are being mailed tomorrow.

The use of lawn sprinklers at Oriole Landing was brought up by an
attendee and will be addressed. Specific methods for informing the tenants
 have not been discussed.

Of note, the Water Commission is not a direct report to Town Hall.
However, it does have a Select Board member as a liaison who
 participates in Water Commission meetings.

 With best regards,
 Steve Gladstone

Re: [LincolnTalk] Why are people in Weston still irrigating their lawns?

2022-07-31 Thread Joan Kimball
Thanks, Sara. I agree. Its very important for us in Lincoln to take care
of our water supply.

Water will be increasingly precious with climate change, and we all have a
role to play in conserving water in times of draught for both people and
wildlife. Grass will come back after browning off. Watering grass does
not replenish the water table. Lots of studies on this.

Re: [LincolnTalk] ALERT COMPLETE WATERING BAN

2022-07-26 Thread Joan Kimball
Thank you Ruth Ann for clarifying rules.

 And for asking for suggestions.

Thanks to all who wrote in. I learned a lot. Early this morning I watered
my newly planted butterfly weed with water I used to cook corn last
night. Snd will use more of the suggestions. Was so hoping for rain
yesterday.

And thanks Louise for including well users. We are all drawing on the same
groundwater/aquifers.

Walking around this morning I saw a dried up stream and a particularly dry
vernal pool.

I worked on river restoration for twenty years and am always concerned
about rivers, flow and drought. And all beings.

Onward,

Joan

Re: [LincolnTalk] bikes and trails

2022-07-12 Thread Joan Kimball
I agree. Jeannine. Leave the trails as they are. My concern is for
habitat. This--connected wildlife corridors in Lincoln-- is a wonderful
thing. And, so often we, the dominant species, have favored people and
their desires over wildlife in big and small ways.

I walked to Walden Pond yesterday on a trail that is open to bikes on the
Pine Hill side of 126. So there is a connection to Concord for bikes and
walkers.

I wanted to slso comment on leashes and Sandy Pond. We are fortunate to
have a water source that is solely under the control of our town. So many
towns have lost water to pollution. And with drought conditions now and
more looming with climate change, we should take the utmost care of our
water. A finite resourse. So I second the comment to keep it safe. And dogs
can enjoy being off leash elsewhere.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Trails Continuance

2022-06-20 Thread Joan Kimball
I would like to know how bikes will affect habitat. We have worked to
purchase and protect connected conservation parcels for wildlife as well
as people.

I read that one person believes that heavier bike traffic will not affect
habitat. Does the conservation commision or Land trust or naturalists have
a viewpoint on this?

It may be that some towns have recreation as their focus. We have always
had habitat as a goal also.

There were 2 cleaners in Lincoln. I don't know about the one near Donelon's.

We go to Mr. Chang at Lincoln Town Cleaners next to the Railroad tracks
behind the new location of Clark Gallery. And we recommend him.

how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic,
coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the
country in a matter of months.

Before Medicare, disparities in access to hospital care were dramatic. Less
than half the nation's hospitals served black and white patients equally,
and in the South, 1/3 of hospitals would not admit African-Americans even
for emergencies.

Using the carrot of Medicare dollars, the federal government virtually
ended the practice of racially segregating patients, doctors, medical
staffs, blood supplies and linens. *POWER TO HEAL *illustrates how Movement
leaders and grass-roots volunteers pressed and worked with the federal
government to achieve justice and fairness for African*-*Americans.

Through the voices of the men and women who experienced disparities and

national audience on PBS to a missing link in the Civil Rights Movement --
a struggle over healthcare from a half-century ago, that raises questions
that resonate today: Is healthcare a human right? Must the federal

We too support the incumbants, Margaret Olson and Steve Gladstone because
of their outstanding work on the planning board. We second Dilla Tingley
in sending thanks to Allen Vander Meulen for writing such a good letter on
their behalf.

We hope you will join us in voting for Margaret Olson and Steve Gladstone!

Thanks Virginia, thanks, Sara, thanks Janet Boynton, filmmaker!

It was terrific. Learning about old Lincoln, hearing the wonderful
stories, the good humor, seeing these old friends talking, the wonderful

Many of us want to help with the housing crisis in this part of MA. And i

 Sara,
The original map published in the Squirrel was incorrect. This is my
fault - I made that map and made a mistake in the GIS. This was brought to
my attention in the comments; Alice contacted me and she updated the
 article with the corrected map.

What the updated map shows is that in order to comply we would need to
rezone some of the current R1 (single family 2 acre) zone that is within a
half mile of the station. Depending on how the regulations shape up after
the comment period the town may be facing some difficult choices.

On the question of the MBTA station - we also have a bus stop, at
Hanscom. We are a bus service town under the draft rules.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Too much - or too little - salt on the road

2022-01-16 Thread Joan Kimball
When I was on the Conservation Commission we were concerned about salt
because of health of the wetlands and protecting our drinking water supply,
all of which is contained and originates in Lincoln.

In our schools, only a few of us learned the truth about reconstruction.
It was often glossed over with stories of the poor destitute south,
carpetbaggers and loss of states' rights.

Professor Gates and other historians, including Heather Coxe Richardson,
show us Reconstruction as an opportunity to live up to our nation's ideals
and a truer Democracy.

In this documentary, we will learn about the

·origins of the “lost cause,"

·meaning of "40 acres and a mule",

·reconstruction ideals of Thaddeus Stephens and the opposing
ones of Andrew Johnson, and the

· final Betrayal" of 1876 with Rutherford Hayes' closed room deal that
ended reconstruction.

The documentary is beautifully composed with many wonderful photographs and
excellent commentary.

The Racial Justice Journey presents a screening of Wounded Knee, 1973. This
is the final episode of the acclaimed PBS American Experience Series called
“We Still Remain.”

On the night of February 27, 1973, the occupation of Wounded Knee began.
Demanding redress for grievances—both immediate and some going back more
than 100 years— the protesters captured the world’s attention for 71
gripping days.

The event proved that despite centuries of encroachment, warfare, and
neglect, Native Americans remain a vital force in the life of America.

[LincolnTalk] Fwd: Why is Sherman’s Bridge Road’s bridge wooden?

2021-11-14 Thread Joan Kimball
Hi. It is historic on the Sudbury River, a designated Wild and Scenic
River. During the study to determine designation, it needed repair. A lot
of Wayland Advocates worked hard to have it repaired as it was, an historic
bridge. The designation for the river included historic qualities.

The same when the Lee Bridge on Route 117 needed repair, local advicates,
the 2 towns and Park Service worked hard to have it restored and not
replaced by a generic modern bridge.

*Title: The Name of War: King Philip’s War and Origins of American
Identify*

This 17th century war was devastating to the Colonists (towns west of
Concord were destroyed) and especially so to the Native Americans (large
numbers were killed, removed or enslaved). Jill Lepore explores early
colonial accounts (the only accounts) and discusses how the narrative of
war was written by the English colonists and retold by their descendants to
help the nation form its identity and achieve its goals.

Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History and
Affiliate Professor of Law at Harvard University. Her many books
include, *These
Truths: A History of the United States* <http://www.thesetruthsbook.com/>
(2018),* and T*he *Name of War*—upon which she based this talk. The Name
of War has revised our thinking about King Philip's war and about the uses
of history.

See you tonight. All are welcome!. Joan Kimball for the Racial Justice

[LincolnTalk] FPL Racial Justice Journey, "The Pilgrims" at 7 tonight on zoom

2021-11-04 Thread Joan Kimball
*Thursday, November 4 at 7 pm*
Join us as we continue to look at the people who created our history. This
month we are looking at the interactions between the Native Americans and
the Pilgrims.

This PBS American Experience documentary, *The Pilgrims*, illuminates the
English world of the passengers on the Mayflower, the practical, political
and theological considerations that motivated them to undertake their 1620
crossing and the complexities of their first years in America. This group,
that the documentary calls the least likely to succeed in settling a
nation, against all odds, established a colony. According to Jill Lepore,
one of the historians featured in this documentary, this story erases other
histories, and becomes our story.

And today, we are searching to hear all the voices.

[LincolnTalk] Screening of "Harriet" at First Parish on Zoom Thursday, October 14 at 7

2021-10-13 Thread Joan Kimball
The First Parish Racial Justice Advocates invites you to join us for a
screening of Harriet about Harriet Tubman on Thursday, October 14 st 7 on
zoom. This film takes us a step further on our Racial Justice Journey. To
find the link go to *https://www.fplincoln.org/calendar
*/ Hope you can join us!

*Harriet* is a 2019 American *biographical film*
* directed by **Kasi
Lemmons* *, Harriet had its
world premiere at the **Toronto International Film Festival*
* on
September 10, 2019The film received several accolades and nominations,
particularly for Erivo's performance as Harriet, which garnered her
nominations at the **Academy Awards*
*, **Golden
Globes*
*,
and the **Screen Actors *

*From the Smithsonian Magazine: *
*Harriet Tubman’s first act as a free woman was poignantly simple. As
she later told biographer Sarah
Bradford, after crossing the Pennsylvania state boundary line in September
1849, “I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such
a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over
the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven.”*

*The future Underground Railroad conductor’s next thoughts were of her
family. “I was free,” she recalled, “but there was no one to welcome me to
the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land; and my home after
all, was down in Maryland; because my father, my mother, my brothers, and
sisters, and friends were there.”*
*Tubman dedicated the next decade of her life—a period chronicled
in Harriet , to rescuing her family
from bondage. Between 1850 and 1860, she returned to Maryland some 13
times, helping around 70 people
—including four of
her brothers, her parents and a niece—escape slavery and embark on new
lives.*

[LincolnTalk] Screening "I Am Not Your Negro" Thursday September 9 at 7-9 P.M. on Zoom

2021-09-08 Thread Joan Kimball
*The Racial Justice Advocates of the First Parish Church invites you to
join us in two zoom meetings as part of our James Baldwin Summer events.*

*September 9: I am Not Your Negro.* The Zoom link can be found at under
events at *https://www.fplincoln.org/rja/ <https://www.fplincoln.org/rja/>*

>From the New York Times (2-2017): … the film..."*I Am Not Your Negro* is a
thrilling introduction to [Baldwin's] work, a remedial course in American
history, and an advanced seminar in racial politics — a concise, roughly
90-minute movie with the scope and impact of a 10-hour mini-series or a
literary doorstop. It is not an easy or a consoling movie, but it is the
opposite of bitter or despairing." And Baldwin said “I can’t be a pessimist
because I’m alive...I’m forced to be an optimist." The movie lasts 90
minutes, and we will have a half hour discussion afterwards. Hope you will
join us!

September 16: Go Tell it on the Mountain. The zoom link can be found
under events at *https://www.fplincoln.org/rja/
<https://www.fplincoln.org/rja/>*

Baldwin’s first novel is considered his finest. Based on the author’s
experiences as a teenaged preacher in a small revivalist church, the novel
describes two days and a long night in the life of the Grimes family,
particularly 14-year-old John and his stepfather, Gabriel. It is a classic
of contemporary African American literature
<https://www.britannica.com/art/African-American-literature>.

This last meeting of the James Baldwin Summer will provide a discussion of
this book and opportunities for reflection on all we have learned during
the James Baldwin Summer.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Coyotes

2021-08-21 Thread Joan Kimball
And we have had coyotes for years and years. About 15 years ago, I held a
staff retreat at my house. Suddenly all the biologists looked especially
alert. Four coyotes ran through our yard! The highlight of the yearly
planning retreat for these scientists.

And this was before the chickens.

 Good Morning,
On Tuesday Evening, 7:15, I parked at the Lincoln Cemetery for a walk
on the conservation trails nearby. After several minutes of walking
towards the far side of the farmland, I heard first one, then two then 6?
7? Coyotes nearby in the woods, just out of sight: barking and howling.
Needless to say I, and my 9 lb. poodle, ran back to the car!
My 100 lb. German Shepherd recently passed so, I don’t think I’ll be
going out at dusk anymore on the trails with my little one.
 Enjoy this day.

I've seen a coyote midday in south Lincoln a few times recently. One

I've attached a picture of it going down Lewis Street.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Why are codman farm goods so expensive

2021-07-14 Thread Joan Kimball
Yes, but Whole Foods can price lower because of quantity. You can see it in
food and flower prices. They are a national chain. Codman and local
farmers have locally grown food. Farm staff need to be paid fairly for
this labor intensive food. And so we can choose, as Sara says.
