Re: [LincolnTalk] good contractor

2024-07-09 Thread Linda McMillan
Thar's good to know. Recommendations are important. Here's a contractor
everyone should stay away from. Bill Waite, Custom Builder, in Bedford.
He, too, is a friendly guy and does high quality work, but it is impossible
to get him to come at times. He left us for months at a time without
explanation. He also doesn't know how to manage the finances. He was always
behind paying his subs, so they all quit on him, leaving us high and dry
until he could find a replacement, or come up with the money. He still owes
us work after 8 years! I'm constantly amazed that we survived this
nightmare.

Re: [LincolnTalk] state moving bear from Lincoln - Process? Bear Dens?

2024-05-15 Thread Linda McMillan
In my conversation with the Massachusetts bear biologist, Dave Wadell
(sp?), he said they don't move bears unless the bear is wandering around a
highly developed area, like in this case when the bear was in downtown
Worcester.

Re: [LincolnTalk] state moving bear to Lincoln from Worcester - can they do that

2024-05-14 Thread Linda McMillan
The Massachusetts bear biologist I spoke to said there are many bears in
much more developed areas than Lincoln. The bear was not moved to Lincoln.
It "wandered" into Lincoln after being moved out of Worcester to another
town. Perhaps he will wander away.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Bear sighting just now at Fox Run Road

2024-05-13 Thread Linda McMillan
I talked with the Massachusetts bear biologist today. He said this bear was
moved from Worcester where he was wandering into a very developed area not
because he was aggressive or violent. He's about two years old and has
moved about 35 miles in the last week. They have no intention of moving him
out of Lincoln. He said we should get used to having bears in our town. The
likelihood is that we will see more.

He said to take down your bird feeders and bring in your trash.

Regarding dogs, he said there is more risk that your dog will be attacked
by a coyote than by a bear. However, he said if you have a dog that wanders
or does not come to you when called, or who is aggressive, he suggests
keeping it on a leash.

He also said there is no need to notify them of the current location
because they have no plans to move the bear.

I hope this is helpful.

Uber has worked out well for us, and you can reserve it ahead of time. Much
less expensive than other options I have used.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Community Center and Last night at Twisted Tree DeCordova

2023-10-10 Thread Linda McMillan
But would you go to Twisted Tree or Decordova by yourself to hang out and
perhaps run into someone? Personally, I would go to these places to meet up
with a friend I had made a plan to see, not to go by myself.

I am trying to respond to the US Surgeon General's 2023 report that states
there is an epidemic of isolation and loneliness in this country because so
many people are living alone. They further suggest that local communities
find ways to help people connect with others. I think a Community Building
designed in the right way could provide a space that invites this
connection, a space that other spaces in town don't provide. Where is the
Coffee Spot in the library and how many people could it accommodate? I'm
just not aware of this. Thanks.

I’d be interested to hear from others if they think the library is a good
substitute for a community gathering space in a new Community Center. In other
words, is the town’s need for a cozy, comfortable, spur-of-the-moment gathering
space already met because they can use the library? Or, would such a space in a
new Community Center fill a void?

Hi Carol,
I love our library, but reserving the Tarbell Room doesn’t meet the need of
those who just want to drop in and see who is there, hang out a bit and
socialize. Plus, going to an event is very different from seeing people on a
day-to-day basis without a special event that causes lots of people to show up.
Sometimes, folks don’t feel like going to “an event”. I think a Community
Building would serve this unique need, in my opinion.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Community Center and Last night at Twisted Tree DeCordova

2023-10-09 Thread Linda McMillan
This is why a “community gathering” space is so important in a new Community
Center. I was happy to see that in all the options, there is now a space that
is labeled “community gathering” because not everyone wants to sign up for an
exercise program, learn a new language, or join a specific program. Many people
just want to see another human being, especially if they live alone. A space
with cozy and comfortable chairs that facilitates this is sorely needed in
Lincoln.

Re: [LincolnTalk] oierce house

2023-09-16 Thread Linda McMillan
This is why having a cozy place to hang out and chat with others at either
Bemis or the Pierce House is a great short term solution, but ideally it
should be integrated into the new Community Building (should it proceed) so
that folks can see others as they come and go, and be part of a buzzing and
vibrant space rzther than a remote location that might feel lonely as well.
But since this is potentially years away, I think finding a solution that
can be implemented soon would be a HUGE benefit to combat feelings of
isolation that are so common.

This is a great conversation. How can we move it forward?

Re: [LincolnTalk] Last Night's Community Center Forum

2023-09-15 Thread Linda McMillan
I would love to see something like this in town and would be happy to be part
of a conversation with Pierce House and COA. I would hope that others might
join in who would anticipate using such a space. It may be a good short-term
solution. I would still advocate for a more permanent space within the new
Community Building ( if it goes forward). At the very least, I think it needs
to be part of the programming so the architects could explore possible space
options within their design. Thank you Sara for the Pierce House idea!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Last Night's Community Center Forum

2023-09-15 Thread Linda McMillan
While I fully support the COA and have been a volunteer for many years, the
design of the new “Community Center” (at last I looked), does not support one
of the biggest program needs of seniors, that is, LONELINESS. There are many
seniors who have lost a spouse, or who live alone for various reasons and are
lacking connection to other people. Perhaps they don’t feel like signing up for
an exercise class, or want to learn a new language, or play the ukulele, or
attend a lecture, but they DO WANT to go to a place where they can see other
people, maybe even meet someone new, chat, and have a cup of coffee or tea, and
hang out. They would like comfy chairs, maybe some magazines donated by “the
community”, and a space where you don’t have to talk in a whisper (like the
library). A report released this year by the US Surgeon General reported that
about half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of
loneliness. The report is titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.”

The Community Center building as currently designed (the last I looked) does
not have a welcoming, comfortable space like this. They have utilitarian
“activity rooms” and “lecture rooms”. I realize that building costs have risen
significantly and that the current cost of construction and renovation pose
significant challenges, but if the new “Community Center” doesn’t have a space
to tackle this incredibly important need of seniors, then we are not seeing the
forest for the trees, and I will not support it.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Logan to Lincoln tomorrow at 5pm...recommendations appreciated!

2023-07-12 Thread Linda McMillan
My daughter, her husband and 4 month baby arrived on July 5th and went home
on July 11th. Because they were traveling with an infant and had all the
associated luggage, we decided to just drive to Logan and pick them up.
They arrived at 4pm and it couldn't have been easier. There was no traffic
back-up. It took 30 minutes fron Lincoln to Logan. The same was true on the
departure. We left Lincoln around 12:30 pm and it took about 30 minutes to
get to the airport. I felt the reports were so overblown. Good luck.

[LincolnTalk] Donations of sweaters, gloves, scarves to the Homeless Shelter

2023-02-02 Thread Linda McMillan
I can’t find the post from the woman who was collecting warm items for a
homeless shelter in anticipation of frigid conditions this weekend. I have the
following items to donate and I recall she said she would pick them up on
Friday.

7 scarves
2 pair mittens
1 hat
2 men’s wool sweaters
1 men’s wool vest
1 women’s wool vest

I am located at 207 Sandy Pond Road, on the right as you are driving toward Rt.
2. We are a single-story mid-century modern home. We are located between Goose
Pond Road and Fox Run Road which are on the left. We have a green Boston Globe
mailbox at our driveway.

I will leave a white trash bag with the items on our front porch because we are
likely not to be home.

Thank you!

[LincolnTalk] FREE Hitchcock Chairs

2023-01-26 Thread Linda McMillan
I am looking for a home for a pair of Hitchcock Chairs lovingly worn. Or, you
can take one. One chair needs a new rush seat and wooden side panels. The other
chair’s rush seat is fine. These chairs were not manufactured by the Hitchcock
Chair Company. They told me that other manufacturers between the late 19th-mid
20th century (Ethan Allen, Nichols and Stone) manufactured these chairs in the
mid-18th century style. The Hitchcock Chair Company could fully restore and
refinish these chairs (as they do all the time) for $225 a piece ($100 extra
for a new rush seat), but I find the old patina authentic. I’m offering these
chairs FREE.

Available for pick-up.

Re: [LincolnTalk] bikes and trails

2022-07-11 Thread Linda McMillan
I think what the Cambridge Water Department was saying was that after a search
of all the published literature at the time, they found that it was geese poop,
not dog poop, that posed a threat to drinking water quality, so they allow dogs
off leash around Fresh Pond. The fence keeps dogs and animals (and people) from
swimming in the water, but the dog waste still seeps into the ground and ends
up in the water, but it hasn’t caused a problem for them. Dog waste seeping
into the ground is the rationale ( I think) that our Water Department is giving
for no longer allowing dogs off leash around Flint’s Pond. Apparently, this is
not become an issue around Fresh Pond despite the fact that the path is VERY
HEAVILY traveled by dogs and people. It’s like a highway there.

So, I would just be curious for a response to this from our Conservation
Commission, our Water Department, and the LLCT at the next Zoom meeting because
at the last meeting they stated that no analysis had actually been done on
Flint’s Pond to determine what the source of the ecoli problem was. It could
have likely been the geese.

I’m not bringing this up for any personal reasons. I don’t go around Flint’s
Pond much at all. I prefer the Pine Hill loop on the other side of Sandy Pond
Road which I am on daily, but I think it’s important that any change in rules
be based on the right information, particularly since it has been this way for
many decades. This would be an historic change.

Re: [LincolnTalk] bikes and trails

2022-07-10 Thread Linda McMillan
It's good to know that the staff from LLCT and the Conservation Commission
see these discussions.

I just learned a very important piece of information I would like to pass
along. In talking with a Water Commissioner in Cambridge, I was told that
Cambridge went through a very similar process of determining the best use
of trails. In particular, they wanted to determine if dogs should continue
to be allowed off leash around Fresh Pond. After an exhaustive search of
the published literature on the issue of dog waste and its impact on water
quality, they found no evidence that dog waste had a negative impact on
water quality. Instead, they found it was geese poop that was creating a
problem with water quality.

In fact, now Fresh Pond is the only place in Cambridge where dogs are
allowed off leash!

I found this information astounding and respectively recommend that the Con
Com, LLCT and the Water Department look into this more thoroughly as it
relates to the proposed rule that dogs must be leashed at all times on all
trails around Flints Pond.

I am wondering if the Conservation Commission Director or staff even see
any of these comments unless you send them directly to them via the email

Re: [LincolnTalk] Original Intent

2022-05-25 Thread Linda McMillan
I totally agree. The Republican Senators should be ashamed. They have been
stonewalling gun reform legislation because they are beholden to the gun lobby.
Power and money is what they are about. This week, the Governor of Texas (Greg
Abbot), Ted Cruz, and Trump will be speaking at the National Rifle Association
annual conference. How do they get up in the morning and face their conscience.
Will they edit their planned remarks I wonder?

Re: [LincolnTalk] big black dog

2022-05-07 Thread Linda McMillan
I am so sorry, Sally. I can't even imagine the sadness. I can attest to
coyotes being everywhere. I came into close range of them twice a couple
of weeks ago. Once on the Pond side of Sandy Pond Road, on the trail that
goes around the pond, and once on the other side, on the Pine Hill trail.
They crossed right in front of me about 20 feet away. They were running at
full speed. It was terrifying. The first one didn't even see me. It was
very large and a brindle coloring with long legs. The other was smaller and
looked more like a traditional wolf. It caught sight of us and turned
around. My dog is 65 pounds but I wouldn't want her to be chased by one!

Take care out there.

and we have 4 unassembled display cases. Each of the unassembled ones is 195
