[LincolnTalk] Thank you — Cradles to Crayons clothing drive

2024-06-02 Thread Sarah Liepert
Hi LT! Thanks to your generosity, Lincoln contributed 330+ beautiful, gently
used (and new!) clothing items to the Cradles to Crayons drive in May,
including tops & bottoms for summer and other seasons, plus 15+ pairs of
sneakers & sandals. Special thanks for the 40+ infant clothing items.

Your carefully collected, thoughtfully donated items will be so very much
appreciated by low-income/homeless children across Massachusetts, who receive
them free of charge through Cradles to Crayons’ mission to end clothing
insecurity.

Wishing everyone a very happy summer!

Jude - funny you should reach out to LincolnTalk about knitting, as I was going
to do the same this morning! I am also an advanced beginner who is just
finishing her first sweater and seeks input/guidance and conversation, and am
hoping to find - or start? - a knitting group. There used to be a wonderful
store in Belmont called Knittin’ Kitten where women gathered to knit, but she
closed during COVID. West Newton also used to have a similar shop, but they too
have closed. The only place I’ve found to get answers to my questions is the
store in Dedham, but I have been underwhelmed by their inventory of yarns, and
as far as I know there is no group that meets there.

As for supplies- it seems that going on line is the least expensive approach
(yarn.com<http://yarn.com> and others). Michaels and Hobby Lobby and JoAnns
Fabric all have knitting supplies, but their supply chains suffer like so many
businesses, and they rarely have everything you need (looking for a size 7
needle? Oh, they only have 6 and 8 today….etc)

If you really want to invest in getting a full set of supplies and are up for a
bit of a trip, by far and away the best place to go is WEBS in Northampton,
which calls itself “America’s Yarn Store”. This place is ginormous and has
everything you can think of in the way of yarn and supplies. It takes a little
over an hour to get there but it is well worth the trip. While we don’t know
each other, I’d be delighted to go out there with someone else and explore!

My two cents. I’m sure there are others on LincolnTalk who have better advice…..

Tim, this is to follow up on my initial response to you concerning reasonable
accommodations at town meetings. We understand that the Massachusetts Office
on Disability has taken the position that remote participation in a town
meeting is a reasonable accommodation for a person who cannot attend. In our
opinion, allowing remote participation in an open town meeting is specifically
prohibited by law and would fundamentally change both the nature and the
conduct of a town meeting.

As you are likely already aware, the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”)
requires public entities to make “reasonable modifications” to their procedures
to accommodate persons with disabilities. What is “reasonable” is
fact-specific and depends upon the nature of the program and the accommodation

The Town’s preparations for Town Meeting include a whole host of accommodation

What is “reasonable” is
fact-specific and depends upon the nature of the program and the accommodation
being sought. However, any change that would result in a “fundamental
alteration” to the program or service is not required. A fundamental
alteration is one that results in a change in the essential nature of the
service or program. Likewise, a requested accommodation is not required if it
would result in undue financial and administrative burdens.

The very purpose of a town meeting is for members of the community to gather
together to debate and vote of legislative issues of the Town. Allowing some
individuals to participate from a remote location fundamentally changes the
public, legislative process. Moreover, such action is specifically not allowed
by law. During the COVID-era revisions to various municipal laws,
representative town meetings were specifically authorized to meet remotely.
That authority was extended several times. During that same period, the
General Court considered whether remote participation should be allowed at open
town meetings; such a concept never received significant support, however, and
was not enacted. Moreover, allowing one or a small group of people to
participate remotely would result in undue financial and administrative burdens
to the Town. Not only would such a system be difficult and costly to
implement, it would be highly disruptive during the course of the meeting and
would require significant adjustments in the procedures that are usually
followed. Again, this position is not merely speculative. The COVID-era
relief discussed above authorized remote representative town meetings, but not
hybrid representative town meetings. The legislation extending such relief now
states clearly that hybrid remote town meetings, i.e., with some people
participating in person and some participating remotely, is permitted. No
similar authority is granted to open town meeting municipalities, however.

My daughter and I were at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum on Friday,
October 13 when we lost her precious lovey that she sleeps with every night
since she was born.

We believe he was left on the rock wall near the Otter sculpture.

Baby lamb is a small, white (grey from wear and tear), stuffed animal about 5in
tall and 3 in wide. He has a blue pen mark on his forehead and is very tattered.

He goes everywhere with us and is basically a part of our family. We are
devastated (little one is being so brave) and as much as I feel like he might
be gone forever, I’m still trying to do everything I can to track him down.

If you or someone you know was at DeCordova Sculpture Park on Friday, October

Praying whoever picked up this old, tattered, dirty, sweet baby lamb finds it
in their heart to return him safe and sound. 

[LincolnTalk] Cradles to Crayons—Gently-used fall and winter items

2023-11-01 Thread Sarah Liepert
Happy autumn, LT. Now that the summery temps are yielding to cooler ones, I’m
coordinating one more gently-used clothing, coat & shoe drive for Cradles to
Crayons in the lead-up to Thanksgiving.

C2C distributes all items free of charge to homeless and low-income children in

is welcome! You may drop off bagged clothing at my garage door, 108 Trapelo

Many thanks again to all the LT donors who made the Concord-area collection in

[LincolnTalk] Questions for CCBC Re: Community Center- size considerations

2023-09-27 Thread Sarah Liepert
Hi LT. I share Kathy Madison’s question (see her email below) about LEAP space.

I have other questions as well, and just sent these questions to CCBC via their
website’s Contact link. Meanwhile, perhaps some of you could reply to share
what you know about these issues:

1) Importantly, on LincolnTalk, several residents have mentioned that there
will be time restrictions on COA programming/use of the Community Center,
namely, during school hours (roughly 9-2:30), to reduce concerns of pedestrian
safety with increased traffic. Is that accurate?

2) Where may we see info on LEAP’s space & program requirements? I see on the
FAQs on this website that LEAP already makes use of the gym. Perhaps other
areas of the school could (or do) accommodate LEAP as well.

3) From the FAQs on this site, it appears that the school auditorium is largely
available for use by community groups, outside of school hours and major events
such as school plays and school concerts. Could CCBC obtain info on whether
certain COA programs could make use of the auditorium (including the upper
section, which would not interfere with the stage/play/music rehearsals) during
after-school hours?

4) Generally speaking, it could be helpful for this website to include more
FAQs (or possibly answers to infrequent but important questions). Much
attention has been given to the question of cost. But without knowing the hours
that this new Community Center could potentially be used, by COA and other
community groups, it’s hard to gauge whether it would be a “community” center
at all.

The question of need and want did not seem so clearly defined.

My son was in LEAP during his school years in Lincoln (and before that in
Brookline) — colocating such a program w/the school always seemed to make sense
to me.
Now that there’s a nice, new, big school building in Lincoln, why wouldn’t LEAP
fit there perfectly?
I understand the proposed CC would be essentially an “across campus walk” … but
does it need to be?

If we take on even more debt now, will that mean the assessors will need to get
busy so we can recover all the taxes that are not now being levied (because of
under-assessed homes) and how will people feel about that?

Lincoln is a miniscule-sized town. It’s a beautiful, wonderful, rural breath of
fresh air surrounded by lots of urban centers.
The town’s current debt is outrageous for a town this size. To add to it
further seems unwise and unwarranted.

To those who say — “But building a CC won’t get cheaper in the coming years.”
I say, “yes, that’s true, but at what point in time will our town's
indebtedness be too high a price to pay?

Many on Lincoln Talk and others in town simply question the Council on Aging

There is also a healthy debate on whether it makes sense to build a

not aware of any community center anywhere that intentionally colocates a

Many on Lincoln Talk and the town would hate to see the town build a huge

As a small community with limited resources and the highest per capita debt in
the commonwealth, we need to look at large projects with many eyes and many

In an effort to lower the cost and save between 3 and 4 million, I have

Sara, that’s another great idea to ask about the possibility of having the

The knitting group might love one of those rooms for their meetings.
Maybe others would too.

It seems a shame that we are not being more flexible and creative.

It is my understanding that the PH Committee is upgrading the kitchen and
working on accessibility-both for the bathroom and entrance., so that should
not be an issue in a matter of time.

The Pierce House will be a facility that we maintain, we might as well use it.

That’s a good idea, too, Ed. Perhaps the Tarbell Room and/or adjacent rooms
(magazine room with comfortable seating) could be a possibility for a community

Hi Sara/Linda McMillan. What a great suggestion, which could be implemented in
the near term. Might COA and Pierce House staff connect to see about having a
community drop-in room (or rooms) soon? Copying Abigail Butt.

There are lovely rooms (recently redecorated) that could hold comfy chairs.
The kitchen meets catering standards so could also have coffee/tea & snacks
available.
Perhaps there could be some afternoon structured conversations, in addition to
regular drop-ins.
The separate rooms on the first floor lends themselves to different
functions-quiet reading, conversation, card games…etc.

Let’s make better use of this lovely gift to the town.

While I fully support the COA and have been a volunteer for many years, the
design of the new “Community Center” (at last I looked), does not support one
of the biggest program needs of seniors, that is, LONELINESS. There are many
seniors who have lost a spouse, or who live alone for various reasons and are
lacking connection to other people. Perhaps they don’t feel like signing up for
an exercise class, or want to learn a new language, or play the ukulele, or
attend a lecture, but they DO WANT to go to a place where they can see other
people, maybe even meet someone new, chat, and have a cup of coffee or tea, and
hang out. They would like comfy chairs, maybe some magazines donated by “the
community”, and a space where you don’t have to talk in a whisper (like the
library). A report released this year by the US Surgeon General reported that
about half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of
loneliness. The report is titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.”

The Community Center building as currently designed (the last I looked) does
not have a welcoming, comfortable space like this. They have utilitarian
“activity rooms” and “lecture rooms”. I realize that building costs have risen
significantly and that the current cost of construction and renovation pose
significant challenges, but if the new “Community Center” doesn’t have a space
to tackle this incredibly important need of seniors, then we are not seeing the
forest for the trees, and I will not support it.

I support all Council on Aging programs, period.

What I think the Community Center's committee hasn't yet made the case for is
the following:

1) Without real average and mean numbers to COA's programs, I can not get
behind the size of program rooms requested to provide all ongoing programs. The
COA has only provided min and max numbers with huge variations that make over
building very likely. Lincoln has a tendency to over build, that is why our
school is much, much larger than we really needed by any standard.

2) The town has yet to disclose other competing capital expenditures in the
pipeline for the town's tax resources. I have heard rumors that we soon will
need to replace the drinking water pipes along many parts of the town. I have
heard other rumors on lincoln talk, that our repaving and roadside path/bicycle
safety wishes may also require additional town borrowings.

3) The arguments for the Hartwell Community Center being made to the town is a
bit of a False Choice. We need to separate building or renovating a Senior
Center of the correct size with "If you don't support this project, the town
will never get a community center/ senior center that meets its needs."

I want to build a new or renovated facility that is the correct size for our
Senior Community. I have continuing doubts that it should be on the Hartwell
campus. My late father was a terrible driver and I can't imagine purposefully
placing our young children near senior drivers navigating parking lots. I keep
reading in the newspapers that seniors drivers often have unintended accidents
driving into buildings that involve putting their foot down on the gas pedal
instead of the brake. Why are we unnecessarily setting ourselves up for a
potential tragedy.

Let's stop this rush to build and build a newly renovated Council on Aging
somewhere else in town like the Pierce House.

appreciated!

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had experience traveling from Logan since the Callahan Tunnel
closure? Our niece is coming in tomorrow, arriving at 4:51 PM, terminal C.
We're trying to figure out the best way for her to get to Lincoln.

There are several options but I'm wondering if anyone has first hand
experience/recommendations that they can share? Logan Express? Ferry or Blue
Line to the aquarium? Drive to pick up? Unfortunately, her arrival time
couldn't be worse!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Question re: clothing collection boxes around town

2023-06-26 Thread Sarah Liepert
Hi Andy. Great info from several people on Lincoln Talk.

To your question, American Red Cross and other bins specify clothing, so in
other textiles are best donated to Bay State Textiles.

Alice is correct that the American Red Cross doesn’t give donated clothing
directly to disaster victims. As Alice noted below, the entirety of the
donations are given to a vendor. The vendor receives money by selling the
donated textiles (to thrift stores or by weight for other uses), and the
American Red Cross receives a portion of that money, which benefits their
Disaster Relief Fund.

Planet Aid donations are handled in a similar way. Their website says they get
clothing to people in need, which may be strictly true; but their bins have
terminology that indicates Planet Aid receives funds in the same way as the
American Red Cross—by working with a vendor, which sells usable clothing to
thrift stores, but does not give them free to people in need.

Goodwill and Salvation Army are similar. If donated clothing is usable, it’ll
be sold through their stores and benefit their programs. Unusable clothing is
sold by weight (textile recycling) and yields money for their programs.

There are many groups that accept usable clothing and distribute them free of
charge to people in need. Those groups include St. Vincent DePaul; Cradles to
Crayons (newborn to age 12); Circle of Hope (Needham), which distributes items
free of charge to 25 area shelters and low-income programs in Boston; and
Solutions at Work Cambridge/Children’s Clothing Exchange Cambridge/Green Street
Shelter.

All best,
Sarah Liepert

that they only want ready-to-wear (or ready-to-use) items in good condition. I
don’t know what they do with the inferior or damaged donations. Does anyone
know? There is a big Goodwill donation truck outside Crosby’s market in
Concord.

St Vincent de Paul has a box in Weston, behind St Julia’s church and near

All clothing dropped there goes fire to those in need as do proceeds from sales.
Red Cross is notorious for having huge overhead and very highly paid Execs, and
actually expending a small portion of revenues on actual aid.

says "items are then sold through a vendor and a portion of the proceeds

Subject: [LincolnTalk] LPS Student Council Earthquake Collection

Good afternoon! I would like to share an opportunity being organized by the LPS
grades 5-8 Student Council (guided by 5th grade teacher, Ms. Davis) and the
Turkish Families in our community.

As many of you know, on Monday, two major earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 hit
Syria and Turkey. Hundreds of aftershock earthquakes have been recorded since
then. At this time, authorities estimate an incomprehensible loss of life-
11,000 people- nearly double the population of Lincoln, MA, with 43,000 injured.

We have students in our LPS community whose families come from the region
devastated by the earthquakes. In a show of support and community, beginning
today through next Thursday afternoon (2/16) the Student Council will be
collecting donations for those affected. In the face of acute suffering and
immeasurable loss, our students are choosing action. You may send items in with
your student or drop them in the main office. If you are attending the middle
school concert tonight, there will be a collection box there. A heartfelt thank
you from the Student Council for your support.

Here are a few updates to some FAQ:

  * All donations are being coordinated by a local family (Thank you Arslan
Family!). The donations are being coordinated with the Turkish Consulate in
Boston. All items will be placed on Turkish Airlines direct flight to Istanbul
within a day of collection (February 18). After transport, all items are
brought to the nearest functioning airport to be delivered directly into the
disaster zone. No funds are needed to help with transporting these goods.

[LincolnTalk] Thank you, LT!

2022-10-02 Thread Sarah Liepert
On behalf of Cradles to Crayons, a huge thank you to the LT community for your
generous donations of winter coats and clothing in the month of September! The
volume and quality of the donated items was truly remarkable and heartwarming.
These items will be very much appreciated by the families who receive them.
I’ll be taking the donated items to C2C tomorrow.

⭐️ Several people have reached out to ask whether they may still drop off
donations during the month of October (YES!). Now that the fall weather has
arrived, if you’re finding any outgrown coats/clothing/shoes (for any season),
please feel free to drop off the bagged items at my house: 108 Trapelo Rd. I’ll
make another trip to C2C at the end of October.

For more info on C2C’s work to end clothing insecurity, visit their website:

Hi LT! We wanted to give a HUGE shout-out to (and recommendation for) Charlie
Frumkin and his friend Matt. They just moved our VERY HEAVY Crate & Barrel
queen size sofa bed out of the house from an upper level, navigating many
stairs. If you need help moving items, or have any other odd jobs in the next
couple weeks (before they return to their respective colleges), we highly
recommend contacting Charlie Frumkin:

Charlie gets high marks for clear and responsive communication, timeliness,
fair pricing, and a job well done.

[LincolnTalk] Collecting gently used winter coats and clothing for Cradles to Crayons—Fwd: Our Most Needed Item in September

2022-09-06 Thread Sarah Liepert
Hi LT! The heat wave may just be ending, but cooler days will soon be here.
Cradles to Crayons provides clothing and other essential items free of charge
to children in need. In the month of September, I’m collecting gently used
winter coats and clothing (youth sizes 0-20 through adult sizes small and
medium) for Cradles to Crayons. See their email below. Also welcome are gently
used shoes (infant/child sizes 5-13 and adult sizes 1-10). I’ll deliver the
collected items to Cradles to Crayons at the end of the month. Pls drop off
items in paper bags or plastic bags at my garage door, 108 Trapelo Rd.

Feel free to spread the word through scout troops, PTO, or other community
service-oriented groups.

Many thanks,

Dear Sarah,

In September, The Giving Factory® is highlighting our need for

Winter
Coats<http://www.msgapp.com/jc.aspx?d=CWGF234CGAMEN76LPNGSNNFVD5OM3TSVQNQBYYMGOFD3BAUVBKVZEOMX7X3XKV7HETH4T4YDBXCJICUEOEAM2BFRTBZSNPC2RCIWBINX3IDZQI2KCAFWBAAYEIEEA626NNLXP7KJR7NN3HVNPZVAN24XVNPRNHRXZ7YL75FH4APJN5S5MFSFXEPIXCMNI7X56IEFT6VJZ3PSUXZZFLXVEZLCH2KSYL5KNRGKZ63IB5XZ3QUHWXM2IFJHV74D3USJC4RJIKEFTTAXFVQWYTI7FUWLLWJZ76EQ3GM5TZUXNLWO7NGYV5FLES6N4YWPS5RZPTA66HY%3D>

Autumn's cool breezes are approaching and soon enough, children across
Massachusetts will be reaching for their warm coats as they leave for school in
the morning. As families begin preparing for the colder months, Cradles to
Crayons® anticipates receiving a large number of requests for winter coats.
We're setting a goal of collecting over 30,000 coats to fulfill these requests
and keep local children safe and warm.

Winter coats can be difficult to secure, which is why we need your help—shop

[LincolnTalk] Shout-out to helpers

2022-07-04 Thread Sarah Liepert
Shout-out to the two young adults in front of Town Offices just now—picking up
the many small pieces of plastic confetti on the grass and on the other side of
the road (left over from the parade?).

Thank you!!
