Re: MPEG file

2003-03-07 Thread David Burgoyne
For MPEG 1, all machines (except win95 or nt4) will have the required
Libraries therefore no need for QT install.

I've tried MPEG 2 and some of the decoders do not (with
DirectMediaXtra) allow streaching of the sprite in Director - they
default to 4:3 aspect ratio. Probably the MPEG2's decoders fault since
this will work on other machines. However you cannot tell wether your
target machine has the right MPEG2 decoder easily. I still use 352x288
MPEG1 for best playback over mulitiple Windows systems. I've found
using other dimensions results in 'tearing' of the video, I suspect
that installing the latest graphic card drivers would sort the problem
but can't expect the users to do that.

Yes, but ok, you caught me in a slip o' the keyboard. I should have said
that Tabuleiro doesn't require QuickTime >>on Windows<<

If you have a Mac, you have QuickTime (unless it's more than 10-11 years
old), so it's not an issue. QT is sometimes an issue on Windows
machines.

Are you entirely sure about this? I'd double check the docs. From what I
remember on the site, in order to get mpeg4 on the mac using direct media,
qt still needed to be installed I thought, which kind of negated the xtra.

The one thing that got me was imaging lingo.

Not true. A QuickTime movie is always linked, and there is negligible
increase in the size of your movie.

QuickTime is basically a playback mechanism, from your point of view.
You have to have a compressed movie somewhere anyway--MPEG, Sorensen,
etc. The choice or QuickTime or Tabuleiro makes little difference to
your file size.

The one advantage of Tabuleiro's Xtra is that the user doesn't have to
have QuickTime installed. On some Windows machines, especially in
corporate environments, that's an issue. Otherwise, QuickTime is pretty
much ubiquitous.

That Xtra is Tabuleiro's DirectMedia Xtra. No, wait, make that the MPEG
Advance Xtra--DirectMedia is their old product. MPEG Advance supports
MPEG 1, 2, and 4 on Mac and PC.

Right. Quicktime will play an mpeg1 file, so make your mpeg1 and insert it
like a qt movie.

Excellent!, glad it was a help.

You can choose the fullscreen setting for the projector when creating the
exe file but I prefer ini entries myself for flexibility.
 (see following ini entry).
I literally have a single exe file that I have used for the last year for
all my projects, I simply change the icon & ini files to suit.
Take a look at the Director.ini file in the Director install folder to see
all possible options available.

[Settings]
FullScreen=1

A!
That was it!

I didn't know that the entry in the .ini-file describes the file the stub
projector jumps to. I thought I had to write the name of the stub projector
in it.

Now it works, except for one thing: The movie runs in a window, not in
fullscreen mode. How can I change that? I guess that's just another entry in
the .ini-file. Is it?

Thank you very much!

No I changed the exe file.
The file that I link to (the .dxr) is the one listed in the ini so perhaps
this is where the confusion lies.

To explain and sorry if this sounds patronising :

My fast start projectors have always contained no xtras and generally no
data.
Just a frame script that says

global gFilename
on exitFrame
go to frame 1 of movie gFilename
end

gFilename is set in the lingo.ini so I can reuse the stub for all my
projects.
eg. from a working lingo.ini example
global gFilename
on prepareMovie me
gFilename="promsec"
end

my corresponding entry in the projector .ini file is
[Movies]
Movie01="promsec"

I'm not sure if you link to another movie or just create the fast start on a
movie with content in it but give this method a try.
My projector was only about 80k in final size if this is any indication.

I tested Resource Hacker again and InnoSetup Icon Replacement Utility.
Although I have the [Movies]-entry in my .ini-file I had the same error
message as before: "This is not a Director file".

The only difference I see in what you did is that you seem to have changed
the icon of a .dxr-file, whereas my file is an .exe.

Has anybody else ever done it before?
