well guys thanks for the advice and wary cautions. (charlie we'll see if
that tidbit helps things) I didn't mean to start the platform war because i
am well a bi-platform kind-of-programmer. There is good on both platforms
and if you don't swear allegiance ... well open source philosophy (talk
about holy war). But that is different to knowing limitations of any
platform, any software and you guys have helped me out yet again. Just wish

hey list--
I am having lots of problems running director 8.5.1 on mac osx jaguar. I
switch to classic to run director but am having problems with dragging
sprites to reposition them on the score duplicates them and crashing when i
drag a sprite from the cast to the score or stage. Is anyone using director
this way and is it just a bad install? Will rebuild in the am but just
curious if I got myself in a world of hurt by installing osx. thanks

RE: is there a cross platform border Xtra?

2002-08-15 Thread Carol Mahaffy

but if you use the miaw trick do you have to code all of your scripts as if
they were in a miaw? I have the project done and the art director decided to
go with a seemless white background (cd-based delivery) so all my stuff has
been written and i know for somethings a miaw has different coding. I really
don't want to do that if possible.

I have the same problem warren. I have been working with border xtra but am
really confused about how to implement. the site and the samples provided
are unclear. From looking at the code it would seem as if on a mac you have
to"patch" the projector. For 4 hours I have been searching on the web for
reference to how to do this. Is there any better resources on the web that
tells how to implement? Xtras in general i am not proficient in. Maybe that
is why i am having questions as well.

cd to web

hey list --
I have a cd that has been produced that the client wants to port over to the
web (would have been nice if it was decided before it was finished!). I have
lots of external linked assets ect so i placed everything in a "dswmedia"
folder published and it works fine off my hd. But when placed on the web it
doesn't find the director movies that it links to. Called tech support and
they said that when i call a movie and frame I need to use goToNetMovie and
goToNetPage. My question is why is it working on my hd with no issues? This
will require a lot of new scripting so I am asking for any good tip on
porting a "completed for cd project" to the web. Kind of lost here. thanks

one thing the upgrade did fix that i know of off the top of my head (the guy

hasn't happened since the upgrade. And i remember thinking that it seemed to

Quicktime evil bastion of animation

2002-06-07 Thread Carol Mahaffy

hey list --
Seems like i have been working around this for a while and figured that now
is the time to set it right. I have a continuous animation going on in in my
background (just a bunch of lines moving horizontally across the stage). I
have set this up in a pretty small repeat loop that operates fine... Until I
encounter quicktime or another function runs. When it hits the quicktime it
slows dramatically -- if i run another function it increases while
processing the function after the function it runs fine. We have abandoned
almost all continous background animations on previous cds because of this
(we have a lot of quicktime which is essential). So I have included my
script, but i don't really think that is the issue -- I think I am
approaching continous animations wrong as far as thought process. Any clues
-- thanks.

RE: linked director movies

these will be strictly release on cd -- no web application. Is there
anywhere where there is a little more info about scripting between the ldm
and the main movie? is it basically like talking to a miaw?

linked director movies

2002-06-06 Thread Carol Mahaffy

hey list --
I am thinking that linked director movies are way cool but I know from
experience that first impressions are not what they seem in director. Can
anyone give me input in regards to pit falls? mainly audio, quicktime ect. I
want to use them in similiar fashion to a miaw. Before I get to far down the
road, feedback on horror stories or things gone well would be good. thanks.

RE: Text box with scroll.

2002-06-05 Thread Carol Mahaffy

are you using the built in scroller function that uses the system scroller?
if so it is actually an function of whatever system you are running -- kind
of like how quicktime or flash appear on top of everthing unless direct to
stage. Director actually runs those apps on top of the current app. So it
seems like there is a hirearchy of what is on the top layer, second layer
ect. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

You might want to explore custom scroller functions (kind of like creating
your own) but I know director ships with one that will do custom buttons and
stuff.

navigation as text

2002-04-10 Thread Carol Mahaffy

hey list --
i have a problem. i am trying to limit the number of graphic cast members

seemed as if when you are using mouseWithin it slow the rest of the
animations down at the same time. I am including the code. Can someone guide
me on the "right/better" way of accomplishing this? much thanks

RE: while we are talking ESC, how about mapping CTRL, SHFT, and ALT

2002-03-26 Thread Carol Mahaffy

well in my searching there is a commandDown (if command key is held),
shiftDown, controlDown and optionDown(all pretty self-explanitory). I guess
if you piped them thru a keyDown or keyUp function you could check to see if
they are release or not.. or well, hell i am not sure.

RE: quicktime + memory leaks

2002-02-22 Thread Carol Mahaffy

so i guess at this point it is safe to assume that the problem with my
memory loss comes from the quicktime. does this happen with real or any
other streaming media as well? i know you mentioned avi's warren. i assume
that I am not the first to fill up my movies with qt ;-) it seems like there
should have been more written or discussed about this before? just kind of
seems like a big issue for a newbie to stumble across?

ps. guys thanks for the diligence

it seems that after much tracking that when you tart playing a quicktime

puppeting the sounds and called macromedia and they told me that that was
the old way of doing it that now with 8.5 all you have to do is call your
sound with the sound command. I have eight different sounds (mp3's) i queue
them, playNext and preload without any wierdness.

that seems to make sense to me (but no not calling any getURL actions) . Tab
was asking about the xtras i have loaded. Can i assume then if the leak is
happening during and after the director movie is unloaded it is being evoked
by an xtra? or by something that affects the xtras? I know i am not saying
this right but i hope you get my meaning. I am not necessarily looking for
the answer but the process to find the answer. (cryptic i know). thanks

RE: memory leaks

2002-02-18 Thread Carol Mahaffy

yeah I have lots and lots of quicktime and sounds (mp3s). xtras are fileIO,
animated gif, flash asset, font asset, ineturl, jpeg, mix services, netfile,
netlingo, pict agent, png, QTExportXtra, QuickTime Asset, QuickTime Agent,
Script Agent, sound control, swa streaming, textxtra (kind of what i was
considering was the basics). My project has seven movies that have about 500
frames each in them. One of the guys here want to go with one GIANT movie as
opposed to a divided one (i think that is just plain crazy talk, but hey
what do i know). I have stripped out all of the extra code, all casts
members are external i do have some nasty repeat loops going on (and a
couple of embedded repeats, but man i just can't do it any other way). So
the movie is alot faster now and it seems to be runnning smoother but
still... I want to find out where this is at cause usually i pick up code
from my old files to do new projects.

permanently. only comes back on restart, which is plaquing me. I would think
when you exit the file (or Director) that it would dump anything related to
it.

this is it exactly. The leak is evident on the windows side. Not running any
3rd party xtras. All cast members (sound ect) are linked external cast
members. We had some crazy repeat loops for animation running but weeded
them out substantially as well as some transparency loops with animation. Is
there a way i can see what is retained when i am quitting the director file?
I figured that would at least clue me in a bit. It is running pretty lean
right now but that small leak is worrisome. thanks

memory leaks

2002-02-18 Thread Carol Mahaffy

hey list --
i have a cd that was created about 2 months ago that i need to help the
performance. The problem is that after you continously play the cd it sucks
up your system memory. (about 4%) Could anyone give me an idea of how to go
about looking for this? I was thinking that repeat loops might be the
culprit but after extensive removal it is still happening. I just don't know
of a good way to logically disasemble this to see where the error is.
thanks

RE: not statement

2002-01-25 Thread Carol Mahaffy

this worked perfectly! thanks guys for the input. Is this considered like a
"push" or "pop" in a list? I am asking that beasuse my strength is in
javascript and i would have never thought to use that logic for solving
this. thanks again guys
