I think you meant z196, which is the same generation as the z114. Gadi should

You must be very good at saving money to retire early. Or you have plans to
work elsewhere. Either way, good luck and enjoy your time.

While we haven't had the chance to see you at SHARE for quite a while, it was
nice knowing and working with you. As Robert Richards said, they (and we) are
losing a lot of experience, but that's how it goes. Enjoy your retirement.

I see the initial messages on the Operating System Messages screen, but the

There is a log file in /run which I am trying to copy to a USB drive so I

How can I copy the file to the USB Drive?

Does anyone know off hand why this is failing?

I am using an LPAR on a z114. The partition has 3GB of storage defined.

Thanks

Hi Gadi - I haven't installed Linux in an LPAR myself.. though I've
installed z/VM lots of times -- which uses the Integrated 3270 console...
my guess would be the ASCII console for Linux -- that's what I would try
anyway.

Thanks Scott,
Which should it be, the ascii console or the 3270 console?
It will have to wait until Sunday, when I get back to the office.

It sounds like Gadi didn't start up either integrated console before

Re: VDI?

2015-02-26 Thread Kurt Acker
I really like http://www.eyeos.com/
Many folks in this community know that I won an award as it was used to
prove how effective a zVDI solution using none bitmap graphics could be
(my final idea in this area was called Desktop on-Demand since DoD sounded
right to me for this type of solution running on z).

Fast forward approximately 10 years and we have now entered the era of
"killer apps".
For applications like RDz, I think running it on a x86 server using
eyeOS's virtualization engine (see video on bottom right of there web
site) could make for a killer/very efficient way to support applications
that work with z using BYOD type interface to the equation.
- It removes the profile load part of traditional VDI solutions currently
in mainstream use.

Although not able to answer your question directly, hopefully this
perspective adds a modern twist to the conversation.

Is anyone currently using or know of a virtual desktop infrastructure

I see the initial messages on the Operating System Messages screen, but the

There is a log file in /run which I am trying to copy to a USB drive so I can

How can I copy the file to the USB Drive?

Does anyone know off hand why this is failing?

I am using an LPAR on a z114. The partition has 3GB of storage defined.

Thanks

Re: oracle licensing

2015-02-26 Thread Kurt Acker
As a general rule, from what I have seen helping out with lots of Oracle
consolidations/working closely with our Oracle on z Alliance team (who is
getting notice of this thread)... if Oracle can run on a IFL, you get
charged for Oracle having access to that IFL. e.g. If your LPAR has
access to a shared pool of IFL's, your going to be charged for all the
IFL's in the pool.

Depending on what else you are running, LPAR design options do of course
exist that can help balance value to function.
- Defining your options really involves a workshop/planning session.

Worth noting, the special interest group for Oracle on z is meeting at the
end of April in NY.
- Its a great place to talk to Oracle reps involved with z and other
customers running it as well:

We are in the process of negotiating Oracle licenses. We currently have 2
cecs and 4 lpars (running 18 shared IFLs in total). We currently have 2
oracle servers in production (both on the same lpar).

We have been told that we need to have at least one oracle server on each
lpar (in other words- 3 dummy servers).

I would like to know how the licensing works in other organizations.

Any comments ?

Thanks.

Ditto what Scott said. We have to do compliance also, but we are told
specifics; what functions or process are supposed to comply with what rules or
standards.

Can you be a little more specific? Is this for Linux on z ? The
solution(s) would be a lot more general if so -- there are lots of
monitoring/logging packages for Linux on all platforms. (logrotate, etc)
nothing special about it in that respect for the z flavor.

Re: Anyone has experience on selling zLinux at fixed price?

2015-02-26 Thread Henry Schaffer
It might be a good idea to have a "burst out" option. I.e., that once
in a while the cap can be exceeded without triggering an extra charge.
(My cell phone plan has this arrangement for one month after 6 months
of staying within the limit.) This can enhance customer satisfaction
while still restraining resource abusers.

Problem installing RHEL v7

2015-02-26 Thread גדי בן אבי
Hi,

I am trying to install RHEL v7 on an LPAR
I see the initial messages on the Operating System Messages screen, but the
installation abends and drops to a prompt.
There is a log file in /run which I am trying to copy to a USB drive so I can
look at it.

How can I copy the file to the USB Drive?

Does anyone know off hand why this is failing?

I am using an LPAR on a z114. The partition has 3GB of storage defined.

Thanks

Gadi

Subject: Oracle Licensing

Hello Alan,
Oracle licensing is core based and an IFL is one core. If you have 18 IFLs,
but only 3 in the LPAR that hosts Oracle you need only pay for 3 licenses. You
do not have to have any `dummy' Oracle servers running in other LPARS, the
number of VMs does not matter, etc. You only pay for the number of IFLs that
are assigned to the LPAR where Oracle is running, that's it. (If you are
familiar with CPU Pooling and how it can be used to lower IBM software charges
it does not apply for Oracle.)

The main difference between Oracle licensing and distributed is the multiplier
used to determine the cost. For example, with some Intel processors you have a
.75 multiplier. So, if Oracle Enterprise Database has a base cost of $10,000
the per core charge for the Intel processors would be $7,500. IFLs have a 1.0
multiplier so the cost per IFL would be $10,000. Although our per core charge
is more than on the distributed side customers still save a good amount of
money because they use much fewer cores.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

I hope your /etc/passwd was just a (bad) example. I would NEVER allow anyone to
request my /etc/passwd from whatever machine for whatever reason. It's bad
enough the /etc/passwd has to be readable by users, let alone to send it out.

Our tripwire server tests the linuxguests for a login on several accounts and
services but they don't know if that account is enrolled in the machine or if a
certain service is started. They never login to the machines, should they want
to receive certain files I will make sure they will get them but I wouldn't
allow anyone to gather all sorts of files from within the guests.

I work for an outsourcer supporting Linux on z. One of my clients uses
Tripwire. I don't know the specifics other than it logs into each server on a
daily basis and ftp's certain files (i.e. /etc/passwd, etc.) to the Tripwire
server and they've had me modify the syslog config to send the log messages to
a Tripwire server.

Can you be a little more specific? Is this for Linux on z ? The
solution(s) would be a lot more general if so -- there are lots of
monitoring/logging packages for Linux on all platforms. (logrotate, etc)
nothing special about it in that respect for the z flavor.

Re: Monitoring / logging for compliance purposes

2015-02-26 Thread van Sleeuwen, Berry
I hope your /etc/passwd was just a (bad) example. I would NEVER allow anyone to
request my /etc/passwd from whatever machine for whatever reason. It's bad
enough the /etc/passwd has to be readable by users, let alone to send it out.

Our tripwire server tests the linuxguests for a login on several accounts and
services but they don't know if that account is enrolled in the machine or if a
certain service is started. They never login to the machines, should they want
to receive certain files I will make sure they will get them but I wouldn't
allow anyone to gather all sorts of files from within the guests.

Met vriendelijke groet/With kind regards/Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Berry van Sleeuwen

I work for an outsourcer supporting Linux on z. One of my clients uses
Tripwire. I don't know the specifics other than it logs into each server on a
daily basis and ftp's certain files (i.e. /etc/passwd, etc.) to the Tripwire
server and they've had me modify the syslog config to send the log messages to
a Tripwire server.

I've looked at the amazon and google chargeback models. One of their
options is a fixed price until some number of CPU hours is exceeded.
This allows the 'easy' fixed fee, but also controls the resource
abuser. You would have to have tools in place to alert the abuser that
they have gone beyond their allotted resource consumption.
