RHEL - Ethernet device not found

2015-06-05 Thread Jake Anderson
Hello,

I am getting a error as 'no device found' while configuring the network set
up on RHEL 7.0 on z/VM.

The command I use was :

IFCONFIG enccw0.0.0c00 down

I get a message as No such device Found

What Do i have to check from VM end to ensure the Network device is
recognized ?

Any Suggestion or advise are much appreciated.

Jake

RHEL7 and Oracle

2015-06-05 Thread Grzegorz Powiedziuk
Hi,
I am having hard time finding oracle's certification matrix. It seems like
they require to have an oracle account on their website (which I have) but
with elevated rights (which I don't have).
It is almost like they want to make this information a secret.

Do you know if RHEL7 (or preferably RHEL71) on system Z is certified by
Oracle?
I know that RHEL6 is but RHEL6 is ancient.

Thanks!

What real devices your VSWITCH is using is completely irrelevant to any of the
guests that connect to it. For your guest, you need to have a virtual NIC
defined, either via a NICDEF in USER DIRECT for it, or via a CP DEFINE NIC
command in something like PROFILE EXEC. Whatever virtual device numbers you
use for the virtual NIC are what you specify in your RHEL6.CONF file. (Note
that each and every guest connecting to the VSWITCH can use the exact same

I would guess this is the bigger part of your problem. Have you re-IPLed the
z/VM system after adding the VSWITCH definition to your SYSTEM CONFIG file? If
not, you'll need to either do that, or manually define it from MAINT.

Again, that's not terribly relevant, unless z/VM's TCPIP service virtual
machine is using the same VSWITCH as your Linux guests. (Some shops do that,
many don't.)

If a Q VSWITCH command, issued from MAINT, doesn't show VSW1, then it doesn't
exist (yet) and needs to be defined.

I would guess this is the bigger part of your problem. Have you re-IPLed the
z/VM system after adding the VSWITCH definition to your SYSTEM CONFIG file? If
not, you'll need to either do that, or manually define it from MAINT.

Re: RHEL Install zvm

2015-06-05 Thread Rick Troth
Your 'CP Q V' output does not show the NIC. But ...

Looks like you issued that 'CP Q V' from MAINT, based on the addresses
of several of the disks.

You want to do the 'CP Q V' from the ID / virtual machine where you want
to run Linux. (And tell me you're *not* trying to boot Linux on your
MAINT ID. That's technically possible, but not really a good idea. Too
long to discuss in this note.) Earlier in this thread, you mentioned
LNXMAINT.

2015-06-05 Thread Dazzo, Matt
I am executing the redhat exec on zvm to install RHEL 6.6 and got the below
messages. I believe this relates back to my RHEL6.CONF file and the subchannels
line. When I autolog TCPIP 908,909,90A are the devices that are started. This
the device definition in my system.config file. (define vswitch vsw1 rdev
090B). I can access vm with 3270 and I can connect via ftp. Any help is
appreciated.

Thanks Matt

Matt,

The Virtualization Cookbook has always recommended NFS as the install
protocol. So if you want to follow that as closely as possible, I'd
recommend z/OS NFS over Windows SFTP. I have never installed a zLinux from
a z/OS NFS server, but I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.
You'd want the mount to be in binary so there is no attempt at ASCII-EBCDIC
translation, but I believe that's the default.

Hope this helps.

Trying to figure out the installation method to use and if what I have is
compatible. We are running NFS on one of our zos1.13 lpar or I have access
to a windows sftp server. The RHEL image is an iso file that I downloaded
from RH site. So I am looking to see which one would be best to use?

I did a Fedora installation about a month ago. Similar.

If you're going by the cookbook, I won't recommend otherwise. But if you
get stuck, drop me direct email and we can compare notes.

(Note
that each and every guest connecting to the VSWITCH can use the exact same
virtual device numbers, since they're not real devices.)
