The final step in the formatting process is creating a filesystem:

mke2fs -b 4096 /dev/dasda1

(substitute mke2fs for your filesystem of choice)...

Re: Anyone what to sell me SuSE Linux for s/390?

2004-05-19 Thread Rich Smrcina
The one thing to remember when using other distributions is that IBM &
ISV software are typically supported on SUSE and/or Redhat only. Having
a choice is part of what free software is all about, but in some cases
your choices are more limited. The open source packages undoubtedly run
wonderfully on Gentoo, Debian and Slackware, but you really need to be
more careful with vendor software. If that is important to you and your
company, then the fee for a supported distribution becomes less of an
issue.

It is certainly a herculean effort on your part to attempt to keep that

Re: Easy Reverse DNS Lookup?

2004-06-04 Thread Rich Smrcina
I have a customer that runs BIND on Linux for S/390 as a slave DNS
server to the main windows DNS server(s). The zones are replicated to
the slave every so often. This way, a DNS request is satisfied over the
Guest LAN instead of hitting the 'real' network.

Re: Performance Monitoring for Linux

2004-06-17 Thread Rich Smrcina
Sizing is actually pretty easy. What Barton is getting at is that when
Linux reports performance numbers, it does so on the assumption that it
owns the hardware. When running under VM (or LPAR), it doesn't so you
need something that understands VM's influence and can adjust the
numbers that Linux reports. ESALPS can do this.

As to adjusting performance knobs, it's no different than any other
operating system. Small, incremental adjustments until the natives stop
complaining. If they always complain, that's another issue. :)

Re: Mount VSE volume in Linux?

2004-06-23 Thread Rich Smrcina
Yes, if you have the TCP/IP for VSE NFS feature. But you don't mount
volumes, you mount filesystems (as defined in VSE), which are VSAM
catalogs, VSE Libraries and whatever else can be defined with the DEFINE
FILE TCP/IP startup command.

SLES7 64-bit and Vswitch

2004-06-29 Thread Rich Smrcina
I am trying to get a SLES7 64 bit system to work with a vswitch on z/VM 4.4. The
interface comes up and I can see (ping) machines on the vswitch, but not any other
machines. The SLES8 machines are working properly. The routing (route -n) is the
same on both SLES7 and 8.

I've noticed that when I look at the interface on SLES8, it says UP RUNNING MULTICAST.
On SLES7, NOARP is also displayed. I'm thinking that might be a clue, but I want to
make sure. Are there updated qdio drivers required for SLES7 to work on the vswitch?

I typically start with a template machine of 1112 cylinders. That way
three of them can fit on a 3390-3 volume. If a particular image
requires more disk space, I will add it to each image as needed.

Re: Cost

2004-07-08 Thread Rich Smrcina
Last I checked (which has been a while), the euro was running pretty
close to the dollar, so the price is probably right.

If you really want to provide official support for SUSE, you may need to
just do it. There are a few free alternatives available now that look
quite good. But it's a pretty safe bet that the vast majority of
production shops are currently running SUSE.

Re: Under what conditions will Linux start releasing Cache?

2004-07-28 Thread Rich Smrcina
What is this machine used for? 110 MB of cache is pretty much a waste
of storage. If the machine eats into all (or most) of that before it
finally croaks, then you have a memory hog or leak somewhere.

I've seen that happen with WebSphere and it turned out to be an
application problem.

The cache will slowly get released to a certain point, then paging will
begin and the paging/cacheing dance will begin. When the page device
fills and the cache is gone then your up the creek...

Re: Under what conditions will Linux start releasing Cache?

2004-07-28 Thread Rich Smrcina
The cache will grow as the data blocks are read in from the filesystem.
That is all the cache is used for, storing filesystem data in an easily
accessed place. When an application needs more memory the cache will be
released to a point.

The symptom that we were seeing was the paging device filling up and
cache being depleted. The virtual machine would usually go into a
loop. Internally, WebSphere was doing some thrashing on it's own. It
was basically in continuous garbage collection, trying to release
storage for the needs of the application.

It turned out that the application was doing a DB2 query and under
certain circumstances did not put any conditions on the query, so the
entire table would be read into an object (a 120MB object!). WebSphere
dutifully tried to acquire enough storage to hold the whole table, but
was not able to do so. It would start garbage collection, release a few
objects, then some more rows could be retrieved, on and on, until it
couldn't release any more storage.

Re: Under what conditions will Linux start releasing Cache?

2004-07-28 Thread Rich Smrcina
No, but pretty much anything read off the filesystem is eligible for the
cache (unless you're using raw devices).

If you want to reduce the cache and your application is reasonably well
behaved AND you have limits on the WebSphere heap you should be able to
reduce your virtual machine size. Maybe drop it by 48M or 64M.

downloads/fixpaks/apars page and verify it in the readme or fixpak

Sorry, Cameron, it looks like it might be Fixpak 6. There is an entry
for Linux (zSeries 64-bit), but the site seems to be quite slow,
navigating it is painful...

for your PHP build, you may need to wait out 8.2.

How much memory is cached? On the zSeries that is essentially 'extra'
memory that is overallocated. What is this LPAR intended to do?

It may make sense to throw a few users at it to see how much more of the
cache is released. It will be easier to gauge how much memory is
actually needed, but at this point I must concur that it looks as if the
LPAR is overallocated.

What does the value tell you based on your current program?

Part of the problem will be that the value will change depending upon
what else might be running on the mainframe at the time the measurement
that populates the value is run.

I had a customer that had it running with an OSA Express card and SLES

longer have the patch and I don't think the site is using the dhcp

Re: DHCP Server on zLinux

Unfortunately I do not know the name of the patch, but I think it came
from IBM. It may have been something specific to support the OSA
Express. I think it also required a certain hardware microcode level
and a certain qdio driver level.

You can try search the archive of this list, there may have been some
discussion of it here.

Re: Recycling servers ?

2004-09-03 Thread Rich Smrcina
Talk to some folks used to running Linux server farms and they will
pride themselves on how long their Linux machines stay up without the
need for a therapeutic reboot. We're talking uptimes measured in years.

You may need to find the right synergy between the application and the
kernel release, but servers that need a periodic reboot may be suffering
from a bug in one or the other.

Are you using an OSA2 on the MP2000? If so, do you have an IP Address

Or just use the IP address that's on the card already (unless there a
problem with it).

Yes, you can install VSE under VM and still control the card from VSE
(that's how I did it).

That sounds like the part that is configuring VTAM and CICS for local
terminal support. You'll need a local terminal for telnet access, so
that you can get in to ICCF to use OSA/SF.

The MP3K can do that, I wasn't aware that the MP2K could. In either

devices.

Re: Have a serious problem with mp2003

2004-09-09 Thread Rich Smrcina
You'll some way to get jobs to and from the system, so that the card can
be configured. The configuration member is in a VSE library and the
jobs to start OSA/SF and communicate with the card are in ICCF.

If you have a tape drive on the MP2K, you can get jobs to and from it
via POWER offload (a real kludge and a time waster, but doable).

Re: Weblogic 8.1

2004-09-10 Thread Rich Smrcina
That may be a good starting point, but what you eventually end up with
will depend upon the application(s) that will run within the server.
Linux, application server and java heap size all play into the size.
The more applications or application servers, the larger the machine may
have to be.

Re: VM Shutdown

2004-09-15 Thread Rich Smrcina
z/VM 4.3 and higher have a feature called Signal Shutdown, which will
send a Linux guest a shutdown signal when a command is issued or when
z/VM itself is shutdown. For SLES8, you need at least Service Pack 2 (I
think). Changes to /etc/inittab are also required.

Re: Running servers on z/VM vs on Linux

2004-11-23 Thread Rich Smrcina
If you need to have that feature on z/VM, then you would run it there.
FTP can be handy, MPROUTE would be used if your network uses dynamic
routing protocols. The features aren't really shared with Linux guests,
Linux has it's own. They are uses on z/VM just as if it were any other
machine on the network.

To add to this... obviously the faster hardware that you have the
better. A whole pile of memory doesn't hurt either. I have a customer
that just upgraded from a MP3K IFL (~120 MIPS) to a z890 IFL (~350 MIPS)
and their WebSphere startup time fell from 10-15 minutes to 2-3 minutes.

Summary : Provides an interface to Shoot The Other Node In The Head
Description :
The STONITH module (a.k.a. STOMITH) provides an extensible interface
for remotely powering down a node in the cluster. The idea is quite
simple:
When the software running on one machine wants to make sure another
machine in the cluster is not using a resource, pull the plug on the
other
machine. It's simple and reliable, albeit admittedly brutal.

Re: VMware vs. VM

2004-12-10 Thread Rich Smrcina
This is highly dependent upon the number of application servers and the
heap sizes of those application servers. Like Barton said, determine if
you are swapping. If during normal processing you are not swapping or
if the free command indicates that you have a large amount free (or
allocated to buffers) you can adjust the amount of storage accordingly.
Do this, run for a while, measure again and resize if necessary.
Make sure that whoever administers Websphere tells you if they add new
application servers, since they take up more memory and your reduced
size may not be sufficient.

Hi, Doug, ...
Wow! You've gotten some great responses already.
Clearly, you need to think about your workload before anything else.
You don't want to say "z/VM is better" and then throw a virus-scanning
e-mail service on it and watch the thing tank because of CPU load.
* the INTeL (and copycat) chip doesn't virtualize itself
as well as the zSeries processor, so you get what I call
higher "insertion loss", more of a hit relative to native
performance when running PC software in a virtual machine
* z/VM scales up better than VMware
(probably related to the first point)
* VMware controls are GUI oriented
(but they do now have some early automation tools)
* z/VM is HIGHLY automatable, configurable, and customizable
but is (3270 and EBCDIC) really foreign to Windows people
Cameron's report will be interesting, if they can share that.
And what Adam and others have said is right on.
Let me also play the opportunist and mention FreeVM-L.
It is a LISTSERV discussion list for talking about things like this.
Originally, the "free" part of the name was to indicate the goal
of having an open standard for describing virtual machines, and that's
still the central point of the list. But questions like yours
are also the kind of thing we want to deal with there.

'Mapping' a drive is netbios/smb type of function. The equivalent in
Linux is smbmount (or mount -t smb), if you have the samba-client stuff
installed.
But to physically attach a Shark to an Intel system would require a SCSI
interface on the Intel machine, the proper drivers for Linux to access
the Shark and SCSI ports on the Shark.

Something that has direct access to the Shark and is serving out the

If you want Linux on x86 to be the 'server' it will need to be the one
serving the shares (and has direct access to the shark with a SCSI

Re: db2 connect

2005-01-07 Thread Rich Smrcina
Unfortunately, I don't have a solid answer for you. I'm sure you did
the math, based on 40 users at 2%, 1300 users would be ~65%. That's a
big chunk. It is probably a fair bet that the usage would be spread out
though and 65% is a maximum. The bonus is that you can throttle the
performance as needed with the share setting if they start impacting
other work.
Little, Chris wrote:

z900. The powers that be, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to forego
a staged rollout and, instead, dump 1300 users at once onto DB2 Connect.
I'm desperately afeared of what will happen.

Re: May get VM to manage Linux! Need cost information

2005-01-12 Thread Rich Smrcina
If you have a zSeries processor, z/VM Version 5 starts at $22.5K per engine.
After three engines the price comes down (on a per engine basis).

IFL or standard CP, the price for VM is all the same.

Re: VSWITCH and HIPERSOCKETS

2005-01-19 Thread Rich Smrcina
You could define enough Hipersocket devices so that each Linux machine
that needs a connection to z/OS can have it's own. (the preferred way,
no extra routing hop required)
You could also define a hipersocket address set to the second IP stack
and also to the VSwitch. But then your VM IP stack is working as a
router, which is counter-productive to one of the reasons for the
VSwitch (but I would guess that this is temporary).

TCP/IP stack that we use for 'older' VCTC connections until we get them
switched over to VSWITCH. I would like to communicate from the LINUX instances
on the VSWITCH with an z/OS LPAR using HIPERSOCKETS. I don't want to
'experiment' with the production TCP/IP stack, so I am configuring a second
stack to do the HIPERSOCKETS links. What I've tried complains that a virtual
LAN is not present, but if I'm reading the guides correctly, I shouldn't need
one. How do I get the second stack to be a HIPERSOCKETS pipe for the VSWITCH
network? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: OSA getting me up to speed

2005-01-31 Thread Rich Smrcina
Each guest can get it's own set of addresses on the OSA. It is
certainly not uncommon. Another approach is to set up the VSwitch on
z/VM 4.4 or 5.1 and use two OSA Express cards for failover. Each guest
will connect to the VSwitch, which will then handle the network traffic
to the 'real' network. This is not like the Guest LAN, which required a
router. The guests on the Vswitch sit on the same subnet.
Tom Duerbusch wrote:
We are looking at new hardware, and most likely it will include OSA
adapter(s).
Now, before I spec things out wrong, I would like to understand how
they are used and their limitations.
Currently, we have IBM 3172(s). 1 Ethernet card = 1 IP address.
In this type of environment, I dedicate the Ethernet card to VM's
TCP/IP and have it act as a router to my 9 VSE and 17 Linux images, each
having their own IP address.
My understanding is the OSA card has a dual port card. Can both ports
be used for standard, generic Ethernet IP stuff? Not talking SNA over
IP or anything else, just standard IP (LPR, TN3270, FTP, Database, Web,
etc).
Each card has lots of IP addresses associated with them. That
translates to bunches of CUA (mainframe addresses).
I could see, giving each of the guests their own address, directly to
the card, instead of being routed through VM's stack. Is that normal?
Or is that mostly for "special" guests, such as those that may operate
outside of the firewall?
If two images need to talk to each other, the traffic would end up
going out on the wire...right? Doesn't seem to be a "performance"
option.
I could also see connecting the images, with Guest LAN support (not all
my VSE images support Guest LANs), which would solve the 'going out on
the wire' problem' for those that can use it.
Is the recomendation to mix and match? Route everything though a
central stack for routing? Give each image their own access? Other?
Just what does all of you that use OSA cards do with all those IP
addresses?
Is the OSA cards, sharable across LPARs? What I'm looking for is IFL
and S390 LPARs.
From the mainframe side, I'm pushing for redundent access. If the
network doesn't support it, it's not my area, but it will be upgraded in
time. Points will also be given for items (good or bad) concerning
redundency.
There are 2 gb OSA 2 Express cards. If cost isn't an issue, I don't
see why we wouldn't go with the best. But in other shops, is the
network side ready for 2 gb Ethernet?
I have all these manuals, Redbooks and other documentation. They tell
me all sorts of things (some are z/OS only, I think), but I'm having a
hard time understanding how they work in the real world (VM, VSE and
Linux).
Thanks

Rexec comes to mind, but there are security issues related to it's use.
There are open source packages that can be configured fairly easily to

I have a customer that did something similar (to VSE) with a Multiprise
3000 with fairly acceptable response.
Make sure that you have the latest DB2 for VM service on (especially any
DRDA performance fixes). Using hipersockets between partitions is also
extremely important (but if you have IBM involved, I would guess that
they would have told you this already).

legacy partition on the same z800 through a DB2connect Linux server.
The application is very simple but each SQL query returns around 30 rows
each time.
Despite that it is very simple, each transaction requires around 50
Mips overall, with 12 Mips on the legacy side (DB2 access). Also the
response time of a query from the Java application is at least 5 times
higher than a similar query from a Cobol-CMS application on the legacy
side. We can see that DB2 and TCPIP are talking intensively to each
other and that should explain part of the problem but not all.
We have been working with IBM specialists for two months now to try to
find the source of the problems with no success except a 30% improvement
since the beginning. At this level of Mips utilization, it will not be
possible to have the application in production without migrating to a
z900 at a very high cost, at least for us.

Re: Adding extended memory to z/VM

2005-02-28 Thread Rich Smrcina
That would be 30% of VM's memory being used for expanded. I think
that's a little higher than the suggested amount, but if VM isn't paging
that's fine.
Don't give Linux any more memory than it absoltely needs. If Linux is
swapping alot during normal processing then it needs more, if it doesn't
swap at all you may be able to reduce it's memory. See the free command
for the cache amount. That is typically memory that can be reduced (to
a certain point).
Ranga Nathan wrote:
After the migration of Linux from our LPAR to z/VM today, we want to
release the LPAR memory and give it to z/VM. This will be 256MB. z/VM
already has 768MB.
Is it good to make all this 256MB for extended memory for paging?
In any case, what is involved in setting up the extended memory?
Oh, one more. I think it is good to give more memory to Linux (overextend
the memory) rather and swap excessively as z/VM can do a better job of
managing virtual memory. Whatdy'all think?
Thanks all

When I enter an ATTACH command it does not work.
I just get the prompt back.
Should HCP be capable of an ATTACH command like:

Larry,
the conversion rate for Intel platforms to zSeries ranges from 3 MHz
per MIPS to 30 MHz per MIPS depending on how much data you are pushing
through the caches and out much serialization (context switches, locks,
etc.).
This is typically lower for the web servers and higher for the backend.
Because zSeries capacity is almost always a mixed workload capacity the
utilization peak and utilization variation on an interval by interval
basis comes into play. This is because you have to configure each blade
for its peak, but you configure zSeries for the composite peak which is
almost always less or can be managed to be much less than the sum of the
peaks.
Because some workloads tend to saturate blades at lower utilization
than zSeries the composite utilization peak is usually quite low.

I know that this has been asked in many different ways, but has anyone
actually put together a comparison chart or list of CPU speeds for
zSeries, I32, I64, and other processors.
I have a department that wants to have a group of dedicated Blades
assigned to specific clients. We want to show a cost to Performance
ratio for purchasing blades and scaling a zSeries system.
The application uses Java, in the backend to run the queries and
retrieve the data, and Web servers to interface to a client and present
the results.

costly and tremendous overkill in their functions and capacity. It's
their money, but I hate spending $xxx, xxx on something that can be done
for a quarter of that.
3. Since this solution is only for mainframe reports, later on, I
could see the need for a full blown document management solution. So
the mainframe report solution may end up being discarded.
So I started thinking that there might be a Linux type solution that
can be used for a few years. We can get a handle on what is needed,
volume, accesses, storage, etc, that may end up being replaced by full
packaged solution later on.
Coming from a VSE shop, where we are scrappy. I don't see the need of
spending large amounts of money for a solution, until there is a need
for a large solution. When I need terabytes of documents stored, then I
think I may need an external solution. But at this time, we are
thinking more in the 20-30 GB a year.
Perhaps, with the z/890, we might fiber attached a CD or DVD jukebox
for long term, historical archives.
So, anyone know of a software application (Linux, VM or VSE platform)
that will do this, including chargable vender software?
Or is this something that no one would ever want to use on a
mainframe?
Thanks
