I just ran some tests, and these messages lead me to believe you're using the
tapeipl.ikr kernel. For whatever reason, that doesn't seem to work on
Hercules, and you need to use the vmrdr.ikr kernel. (Yeah, I know, it seems
backwards.) I typically just copy the suse.ins file, and modify it to point to
the parmfile I want to use.

Will try the vmrdr version and report back.

Re: LCS problem Installing SLES 11 in partition ( more)

2009-06-19 Thread Mike At HammockTree

Yes, that got past the problem.. although there were a couple of issues
along the way.
For example, this kernel could not seem to gunzip the initrd; it reported
bad magic numbers. So I unzipped the initrd 'externally' and then just used
that as part of the IPL 'tape'.
I'm still battling later stages of the install process, mainly because of
the very slow/poor performance in this mode, but I did get past that early
roadblock.

Thanks Mark!!

Re: LCS problem Installing SLES 11 in partition ( more)

2009-06-18 Thread Mike At HammockTree

Mark (and any others following along), I'm still having problems with this.
I've taken your config file and parmfile and made only the necessary chenges
(my addresses. IP addresses, etc.) but it is still failing.
I have made about every (reasonable?) variation I could think of, but still
the same final result.
Briefly, when using the CTC approach, I always get the unable to load ctcm
module then it gives up on the parmfile
specifications and goes into manual configuration mode.
If I try the OSA/LCS approach, I get unable to load lcs module, with the
same result.
I'll paste in the CTC parmfile, config file, and relevant (?) parts of the
log.
I have to believe there is something simple I'm missing, but I sure can't
see it.
If someone else can spot it, I'd apprecaite it.
Thanks
Mike

How big is the guest machine size?

On SLES10, I need 768 MB to load the ram disk with an OSA connection. OSA,
from what I remember, needs 32 MB, just for buffers. I don't recall if that
was for each connection or for each of the tripplet addresses. But it was a
lot more than I had when I moved from VCTCA to VSWITCH.

I'd include a little more information this time. I'll paste in the log
that I captured when trying to install SLES 11 into a partition. I tried
both OSA2/LCS and CTCI. Note that the install program found both devices
correctly at 0400 and 0600, but when I actually tried to use them, I got
errors. I tried the OSA2/LCS first, then the CTCI.

Surely this is not required. Please, tell me it's not required.

To my knowledge it is not required by anything to do with Linux.

Nah.. I can confirm SLES 11 installs quite well with PGMPRDOS RESTRICTED
(linux does things right.. it does the IFL Info Read before attempting
the CP version !)

(note : otherwise, SLES11 wouldn't work on IFLs !)

That is what I believed until I saw it in your config. If it's just
in there because the config started life with it already in place,
then yay.

Heck, and I've done it with 256 MB, although the installer runs very
slowly when processing package lists. 384 MB was enough to solve that
problem.

ok
r.

On SLES10, I need 768 MB to load the ram disk with an OSA

I've never needed more that 512MB, even doing VNC
installations, and that's also true for SLES11.
