Hello Tomi.

I have started this, and I'm sorry if I have bumped on your feets. Thought it
is a linux-hams list, and I'm a ham, and I am trying to get the Linux to run
here, and asks just for help.

Thsi is exactly one of the reasons why I do not want to use SuSE;
it arbitrarily does what it wants to, possibilities for control by the
user are relatively poor.
Also, I do not like the SuSE policy of changing this and that
without any notification.

I wish you good luck, anyway.

Then YAST arbitrarily mounted it somewhere else or failed
mounting the CD.
To verify this, after starting YAST switch to another console and,
after logging in, type

mount

The mount program then should show you which filesystems are
mounted, and also their mountpoints.
Hopefully, you will find your CD ROM somewhere.
If not, try something like

mkdir /cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom

(replace /dev/cdrom with your device specifications, for example, if
your CD ROM drive is connected as a slave to the primary IDE
port, it will be /dev/hdb)

Look for error messages. Because of the great automatic and
advanced SuSE installation, it is possible that such minor things
like ISO9660 support (ISO9660=CD ROM filesystem) are not
available in your newly-built system.

In this case, a message like

fs type ISO9660 not supported by kernel

appears.
You then have two alternatives.

1) Try

modprobe isofs

2) compile a new kernel with ISO9660 support built in (read the CD-
ROM-HOWTO and the Kernel-HOWTO on how to achieve this).

Somebody may ask himself here: "How is it possible to install
SuSE from a CD when there apparently is no CD filesystem
support available?"
That's one of the neat SuSE secrets. In some cases, it decides
that you do not need to have CD support anymore and simply
disables it.
That's no pointless complaint, no, several people experienced
exactly that behaviour when installing SuSE. It seems to be version-
independent, can appear with almost every SuSE distribution.

Guess such things are the price one has to pay for "easy
automated installation". In the end, such routines can make more
trouble than a manual install.

That seems to be the problem. Is it really DMA 0 (this is unusual)?
I'd recommend trying different DMA settings.

Then you have the older set of AX.25 drivers. You then either have
to apply the AX.25 modules patch to get a more recent version of
the drivers (see the AX.25-HOWTO for this - but it is not
recommended any more) or switch to a kernel 2.0.35, 2.0.36 or
2.0.37 (here those modules and drivers are included already).

[config files snipped]

I'd recommend upgrading the drivers first and then reading the
readme for the PacketTwin driver to find out how to give that driver
the right DMA channel.

I think it is a hardware problem. On some computers the BayCom
drivers have problems with the serial port (UART). The only thing
that helps reliably here is adding an old serial port card based on
the 8250 UART (or, in some cases, it also works with 16440).
Or do you have two serial ports using one interrupt? You should
avoid this since it leads to problems in most cases.

I tried under DOS and have the same problem. I think it's hardware

Re: HELPME PLEASE

1999-07-21 Thread John Feist

Howdee, I am doing the same thing here. But, I used the Linux dmascc drivers
built into the 2.2.5 kernel. Mr. Klaus Kudielka has been a great help with
this. Currently I have the RS-422 on the first port and RS-232 for the
second. The dmascc config utility is loaded in my rc.local. Both ports are
seen with the ifconfig command.

Once the dmascc0/dmascc1 interfaces are configured, I ported them off to
tnos/jnos with the net2kiss command using ptypX/ttypX pairs. I am still
waiting for the transverter but I can initiate a transmit from the nos port.

Take a look at the www.wa4dsy.radio.org site for the dmascc driver site.
Once I get it all working I will attempt to right a HOWTO. I am using the
Red Hat 6.0 package with the 2.2.5-22 kernel.

Ax.25

1999-07-21 Thread Tom Edwards

I am little new to Linux and Amateur Radio however I am interested in the
subject area.
However despite all the HOWTO's and documentation however I am still
unsure as to what the AX.25 protocol actual does. I have bought a second
hand BayCom Modem and understand that the bits written by Thomas Sailer
make Linux one of the few OS's to support it.
Am I right in thinking that the AX.25 is a basic layer that any of the
applications can use? Or do most of them communicate with the TNC itself. I
would apreciate anyone who tries to explain this to me.

Thanks a lot

Emm, select "from directory" here. That point should be
somewhere to be found. Then, give the directory where your RPM
archive sits in (hint: The CD is mounted under /var/adm/mount).
You do _not_ have to enter the filename(s) since YAST detects
them itself.

Yes, of course. As mentioned already, your CD will be mounted by
YAST under /var/adm/mount if it is not mounted already, you'll have
to select the appropriate directory as installation source.

I am using FBB/JNOS via the kernel to a kiss TNC. JNOS attaches to
kernel via net2kiss. All works OK. Wonder if substituting kissattach
for the proper baycom driver will be all you need, Louis. I have set
up a non RF port (1 and 2 are RF ports, 3 is a meeting place for FBB,
JNOS, DXNET and node. Funny, all others see JNOS, but don't see their
kernel attached partners, so the way is to digi via JNOS, there are
alternatives but I like it that way.

I would like to try a PAR96 modem. So far I only have got the
schematic of the PICPAR, but it is not available locally, as well as
I don't have the program it runs.

Does anyone keep an old PAR96 schematic ? It wouldn't be too hard to
wire some latches and shift registers from my junk box (TTL/CMOS) to
do it. I have never seen how it was done the first time, and I
believe it could be easily reproducible for me. Small size and power
from the computer are secondary for me. Seems it could be the fast
lane to reach 9K6 here, as there are a number of drivers
(DOS/Win/Linux) that implement PAR96 around here.

Even a DETAILED block diagram could help, I have some ideas, but I
don't know the "PAR96 protocol", that is, what it does and what it
expects the interface to do.

Try this:

1) Adjustments of installation
2) Select installation medium
3) Installation from/via...
4) ESC
5) ESC
6) Choose/Install packages
...

Good luck, Kai

A rave from the grave! Nice to see that you have finally been converted. I
knew you would come round in the end.

No. That is exactly the correct version for 2.0.36 or 37 and I would stick
with that to start with if you are running Redhat 5.2. The 2.2.10 kernels
will give you nothing significantly extra in the short term for running a BBS.
These utilities also work fine on my 2.2.10 kernel as well.

You either need to grab all the updates from the kernel-2.2 directory of
updates.redhat.com or else install RedHat 6.0. Personally right now, I would
instead load down the 2.0.37 kernel source from ftp.uk.kernel.org and compile
that up to your requirements and leave 2.2.10 strictly alone until you have
2.0.37 up and working.

Yes, both IDE and SCSI Zip drives work fine. There are also some funky
utilities about that fiddle with the internals - but you don't need these for
normal operations.

Agreed. But there are some good books about.

Why? Ax.25-utils 2.1.42a _is_ the correct one to use with 2.0.3[67]
kernel.

Hi to Jeff, Gerd and Kai. Thanks for the answer. I think I have the
idea now, but what to do if the RPM's is placed on another CD ??.
What do I do then from within YaSt ??.

What have I done ??:

1: entered Choose/Install packages
2: entered Change/Create configuration

Which version should one use with 2.0.36, because it seems that if I could
that right I would be able to get a Baycom Ser12 device and [JTx]Nos to talk
to each other.

In a different lane. Is there someone that uses a Baycom Ser12 device with
[JTx]Nos that has some examples of how it is done and that is willing to
share it with me or the maillist? Please.

Related. What does users use to get the most out of [JTx]NOS ?

Getting confused!

1999-07-21 Thread Rob Compton

Hi guys, I have just had a chance to sit down and take another look at this
linux system I am building to take over the running of the GB7ZPU bbs.

I now see that, from reading the messages on this list, I have the wrong
ax25-utils for the 2.0.36 kernel that I have - the one I've got is
ax25_utils-2.1.42a-3.i386.rpm, and I see that I should have an earlier
version.

My dilemma is: I have 2.2.10 kernel source on my win98 machine's hard disk,
all 14Mb of it. The linux box is running RH5.2. As a bit of a newbie at
linux, can I compile the 2.2.10 kernel with RH5.2, or will I need to get the
RH6 stuff to go with it? If I CAN compile 2.2.10 with RH5.2, can I use the
ax25 utils that I have "in stock", or will I need yet another version?

And though off topic, but related to my woes, can I hook up a ZIP drive to
Linux? I have looked through the configuration when compiling kernel, but
can't find ZIP in there anywhere. If I can get the ZIP hooked up to the
Linux box, then I can transfer the new kernel source easily, in a zip ;-)

I still think that the docs for Linux need to be written so a dummy can
understand them. The docs I have found (HOWTO's etc) all seem to be aimed at
university professors who now linux so well that they don't need the doc's
anyway!

Best regards
