Hello,
I've installed Mandrake10.0 on a computer in my lab (the computer has two
network cards. At the network configuration stage I've filled in all the
required parameters: IP (static), DNS, gateway, hostname. The eth0 interface
started with no error message, but the network is not accessible. I can ping
myself, but pinging anything else (including the gateway and the dns servers)
fails with Host unreachable error (using both IP and hostname). Before
installing mdk10.0, there was redhat linux installed on this computer and the
network worked fine.
There are two identical onboard network cards (Intel) network cards, but the

Sanity check: make sure your network cable is not crossed (assuming
you connect via a switch or hub). There is no firewall anywhere on the
route, is there?

custom initrd question

2004-08-05 Thread Shachar Shemesh
Hi list,
I'm trying to create my own initrd for specific custom circumstances. As
a part of these special circumstances, I wish the "linuxrc" script to
perform the actual mounting of the new root filesystem. I'm a bit at a
loss as to how to go about actually doing it, however.

If I specify that "root=/dev/ram0", then linuxrc isn't run at all. If I
say anything else, it is going to try and mount the new root system
itself, and fail (as it is already mounted). Does anyone know how to
disable this "help" I'm receiving from the os here?

OK, I finally got around to reboot the system with the new modules.
What I did:
1. I already had the 2.6.7 compiled with the built-in 1.0.4 alsa

2. I FTP'ed alsa 1.0.5a from alsa-project.org, compiled as instructed
and installed on top of the modules which came with the kernel.
3. Rebooted the system.
4. Checked all mixer settings, made sure artsd is not running and (to

Still get the same results - weak sound output.

It would help if you posted your linuxrc here (I realize that the
actual linuxrc may be confidential, but can you reduce it to the bare
minimum that still manifests the problem?).

Are you using pivot_root(8) - what linuxrc normally does - or
something else? Guessing wildly, there is a filesystem already mounted
on put_old by the time linuxrc gets to its own pivot_root - you need
to avoid that.

I may be really off the mark without seeing the script.

IIRC, when using initrd, the linuxrc script is in charge of mounting the
real root partition, and not the kernel. The identity of the root partition
is passed to linuxrc, and from there it does pivot_root to mount it.

If it's already mounted, it's because the linuxrc has mounted

if I recall correctly, if you have initrd support compiled in, the
kernel relies on the initrd (which means the linuxrc) for mounting the

[W2L MEETING] Welcome to Linux 2004 - Ignition

2004-08-05 Thread Orna Agmon
Dear All,

Next Monday (9/8/2004), 18:30, we begin arranging "Welcome to Linux
2004", which is to be Haifux's 6th series. This year we are going to try
to join efforts among Linux Clubs in Israel: Haifux (Haifa), Telux (Tel
Aviv) and the newly re-forming JLC (Jerusalem).

The events we plan will include:

A Linux day, including an installation party -
New ideas from Telux are that there may not be a need to install
computers. Still, another purpose of the party is solving problems on
brought computers, configuring hard stuff, and demonstration and
interaction. So this should be discussed.

A series of 6-8 lectures, ranging in time from about the second week of
the semester until no later than the mid-term exams. Topics and order of
lectures will be discussed. Last year's schedule of Haifux's events is to
be found here, along with slides:

http://www.haifux.org/newcomers/timetable.html

Lecturers and assistants will hopefully be set. Slides may be shared
between the Linux Clubs.

In the meeting on Monday, you can volunteer to be in charge of a topic.
These topics range from educational to Public Relations to installations:

A person in charge of the Linux Day in Haifa
A person in charge of each Lecture (and an assistant)
A person in charge of all the lectures
A/Some person/s in charge of choosing and preparing the distribution
(possibly the same person in charge of a Linux Day some place)
A person in charge of relations with sponsors
A person in charge of PR
A person in charge of feedback (designing feedback forms, distributing,
collecting, analizing)

A recent development:
Burning Disks: Hamakor have already announced their intention to burn CDs
of Kazix and Ehad (or something similar). See:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01373.html
Hamakor also intends to work on sponsors and newspaper ads, according to
the same mail Alon Altman sent.

We meet in the Technion, Taub 3. See http://www.haifux.org.org/where/html
for arrival details.

If you wish to be in charge of a topic, it is advised for you to show. If
you wish to voice your opinion, come along. If you just wish to see what
is going on, you are also welcome.
If you wish to help around during the installation party, and you do not
wish to affect any decisions, there will be a dedicated meeting later on.

Attendance is free (you do not get paid, though...), and you are all
invited!

Future Haifux lectures include:

Latest kernel developments by Muli Ben Yehuda and Orna Agmon + 5-th haifux
birthday party on 16/8/2004
Web Hacking by Nadav Har'EL on 30/8/2004

We are always looking for interesting lecture ideas, and we will soon
begin to schedule the next season!

Have a subject
you want to talk about? Or a subject you'd like to hear someone else
talk about? email us.

Orna.

A watered down version of the linuxrc is merely something that does:
mount -nt ext3 /dev/hda1 /mnt
pivot_root /mnt initrd
This is a watered down version. The full version does things slightly
more interestingly, which is the reason I have to have linuxrc mount root.

If this is run with "root=/dev/hda1" kernel parameter then I get a
kernel panic after the script already runs. If I set "root=/dev/ram0"
then linuxrc isn't sought after at all, and the usual "find me init"
algorithm runs on the initrd mount, which fails at locating all the
usual inits, and run /bin/sh (which is actually busybox, but never mind).

What I finally did to solve this problem was to pass to the kernel
"root=/dev/hda1", and then write a linuxrc that does:
mount -nt proc proc /proc
mount -nt ext3 /dev/hda1
echo "0x100" > /proc/sys/kernel/real_root_dev
umount /proc
pivot_root /mnt initrd

The problem is that, while this sortof works, I have not seen it
documented anywhere.

Explanation - 0x100 is /dev/ram0. In effect, I'm fooling the kernel into
thinking it needs to mount a new kernel itself by telling it the root
will be /dev/hda1, and then linuxrc tells it that it actually uses
/dev/ram0 as the root. What I'm guessing is that once linuxrc finishes,
it tries to pivot_root, sees that it already has the right partition
mounted, and goes on with the init process as usual. Still, some
confirmation that this will not break would be reassuring.

 Shachar
Reference:
initrd manual: http://www.netadmintools.com/html/initrd.man.html
In particular, the following quote:
4. If the indicated normal root file system is also the initial root
file-system (e.g. */dev/ram0* ) then the kernel skips to the last step
for the usual boot sequence.

I'll just mention that the 8 steps documented there fit 100% to my
observed actual behavior, so Muli's explanation does not seem the right one.

The linuxrc written for linBrew (which detects and mounts the CD) runs
init after mounting.
The parmeter passed to the kernel specifies that linuxrc is used as init.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/linbrew/lnbr_cd/share/syslinux.cfg?rev=1.2&view=auto

But that means that you cannot override the "init=" to specify another init.
If I may make a suggestion, remove the "init=" from the boot menu.
Replace the entire "else" clause of the last if (the one where you say
you found the linbrew CD) with a code to extract the major/minor device
numbers of the linbrew CD, echo that into
/proc/sys/kernel/real_root_dev, and exit normally. The kernel will
mount, pivot_root and run init for you. That is the classic way linuxrc
is built.

For reasons of complexity, I do not have the option of letting the
kernel mount the final root device on my behalf. I still don't want to
lose the possibility of passing "init=" as a kernel boot param, and so
the question above.
