[Herzelinux] Linux Kernel Networking - the Routing Subsystem (Rami Rosen)

2008-08-06 Thread Gilad Ben-Yossef

Hi all,

On Thursday, 7/8, Hezelinux will hold it's second meeting.

Topic: "Linux Kernel Networking - the Routing Subsystem"

Lecturer: Rami Rosen

Where: Hi Tech College, Maskit 27, Herzelia Pituch.

Time: Thursday, 7/8, 18:30.

Note: this is a re-run of the lecture of the same name that ran In Haifux.

Herzel-what?

Herzelinux is a new Linux Linux user group. It's aim is to try to bridge
the gap between professional Linux programmers working for Hi tech
companies and the Linux Open Source community and bring them into the fold.

As such:

- The meeting topics will tend towards the advance technical stuff which
is of interest to professional programmers.

- The meeting takes place in Herzelia Pituch (Maskit 27, In hi-tech
college), a short walking distance from most of Silicon Wadi companies,
to the pleasure of the lazy Hi Tech bums :-)

Other then that it's just yet anther LUG, like Haifux and Telux, whose
format we're basically mimicking (read: most sincere form of flattery
and so on...)

Needless to say, it's free, both in speech and in coffee (not very good
coffee but it's provided for free by Hi tech College so we shouldn't
complain) and you are all invited. In fact, I'd truly appreciate if you
can spread the word and invite fellow programmers working on Linux which
are not alpha Linux geeks.

One should note that this meeting co-incides with the PHP-Israel meeting:

http://xrl.us/omvcn

I learned about both meetings today, and now I'm contemplating which meeting
to go to.

Can you please next time make sure these meeting don't fall on one another?

Well, the problem with that is that I still recall the trouble it took me to
go to Herzelia Pitu'akh from my home in Ramat Aviv Gimel on a Thursday. Most
buses and service cabs didn't stop at my station, there was a huge traffic
jam, and the bus that I could finally ride was fully packed.

I think I'll go to the PHP meeting tomorrow instead to save this
inconvenience.

Perhaps you'd like to choose a different day than Thursday, or relocate?

Well, this is most unfortunate indeed, but I just learned of the PHP
meeting myself.

I usually check that there are no conflicts with Haifux and Telux. I'll
now added the PHP club to the list.

Any other clubs I should check?

There's a list of them here:

http://www.shlomifish.org/open-source/resources/israel/guide-to-israeli-foss-resources/#clubs

Here's what I know of their status:

1. Haifux is active and meets on Mondays.

2. Telux is active and meets on Sundays.

3. The Jerusalem Linux Club is not active.

4. Herzelinu is naturally active and meets on Thursdays.

5. Perl-Israel have merged with Telux into OSDClub Tel Aviv.

6. Python-Israel are not active. (Possibly also part of OSDClub-TA now).

7. Ruby-Israel are not active. (Possibly also part of OSDClub-TA now).

8. PHP-IL are active and meet on Thursdays.

9. I don't know anything about the Israeli Grid Association.

10. Don't think Hebrew SUSE have meetings.

11. Redhat.org.il don't meet either I think.

12. Mandriva-IL don't have meetings of their own from what I know.

13. Debian-IL, Ubuntu-IL and Hackers-IL don't either - they're just online
communities.

-

There's now also:

http://www.hackers.org.il/mediawiki/index.php/Rehovot_LUG

But I don't know anything about them. They said they'll meet on Wednesdays.

It does not, naturally. However, I'd expect other people who come from Tel
Aviv or souther by bus and possibly by car to experience similar problems. So
you need to take it into account.

As you wish - it's just that I and other people will have to accomodate with
this awkward choice of location and timing.

I see. However, I can't tell how to receive an RSS feed for the events.

This feed - http://tuxology.net/feed/ - does not contain any announcements of
events. And the Google Calendar does not seem to provide any RSS feeds. I
have my own Calendar at home, so I don't need one at Google.

I registered as a "fan" of the facebook group, and hope I'll receive updates
by email from there, but there should be a way to do it using RSS too.

So, no wonder I didn't know about it and learned about it only now. With
OSDClub Tel Aviv, I'm trying to publicise events in Whatsup (newswire +
calendar), Linmagazine (events feed), relevant mailing lists and now Facebook
at least a week in advance. (Sometimes I forget, etc. but that's the ideal) A
previous day reminder to Linux-IL is not enough for people to learn about
your event.

I just wanted to note that in that (historic!) day, when the first
Herzelinux lecture was given, July 17, 2008 (Thursady) , there were no
trains at all during all day due to maintainence railway work (all
lines from Tel Aviv to Nahariya). This probably contributed to the
fact thay there were
traffic jams, etc (though it is hard to estimate in numbers). I
remember this "no-trains" day without any doubt because I had to skip
the idea of taking a train that day.

A representative of Sun is interested in flying to Israel to lecture
at interested LUGs in regard to OpenSolaris. I had tried to sign up
for all the LUGs and ask separately, but this is impossible for me

I believe that his field of expertise is security. The dates are not
yet determined, as Isreali LUG interest has yet been determined. After
a day or two of this thread, I will let him know how many Israeli LUGs
have expressed interest and then Sun will decide if/when to send him.

Re: OpenSolaris lectures: please ask your LUGs.

2008-08-06 Thread Dotan Cohen
Here are the details as I have them:
1) Right now, I am only checking interest in Israel. Maybe there isn't
enough interest to fly someone over?
2) Assuming that enough interest is generated, I do not know when the
rep will be able to come. Maybe this month? Maybe this year?

So for those who are interested, please let me know:
1) Which Israeli LUG you represent.
2) Where you meet.
3) Which day of the week / which hour is best for you. The rep will
need this to coordinate his schedule. If you can provide an
alternative date/time as well that will be good as two interested LUGs
may meet at the same hour.
4) An estimate of turnout. If only six people show up for a lecturer
from Hul, that would not be very honourable.

I have spoken with Shimon of the Open University and Shlomi Fish from
Tel Aviv university. I know that Herzlinux is interested as well.
Please pass this opportunity on to other Israeli LUGs that you know
of, especially if they do not have representation on the Linux-IL
list.

Thanks to all.

Don't know about swik, but there is this site:
http://www.givemebackmygoogle.com/ - that is a google wrapper site
with many garbage searches removed.

iptables rule to allow NAT but not local access

2008-08-06 Thread Geoffrey S. Mendelson
I want to install a wireless router that is unprotected (it's for a special
occasion).

During the time it is up, I want to allow users on it to access my Internet
connection, but not the computer running the connection (it's the usual
pptp tunnel).

If I need to I can add an ethernet interface just for the that router.

I'm using a 2.4 kernel so I need an iptables rule.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Geoff.

Personally, I would be interested. I belong to Haifux as well. But you have
to ask more people on haifux mailing list.

Thanks, but how will that affect my already existing carefully
crafted rules?

If you care to read the forum ( probably not..) one of the common uses
of the system is for ad hoc configuration. It all comes to what is
defined as you "external" connection.

I assumed you wanted to create an isolated environment giving WWW access
to it's clients without interfering with your current setup.
For that matter, define an ip on your curent network as the "External"
connection, RED in IPCOP terms, a different set of ip's for the "new"
lan, GREEN in IPCOP terms and last a wireless network, BLUE in IPCOP terms.

Otherwise, iptables-save, iptables -D, iptables-restore.
Am I missing something?

PS DO read the short documentation in ipcop.org

Just a correction:

I'm not "from" Tel Aviv University. I'm a Technion Alumnus who just happens to
be an organiser of the Tel Aviv Linux Club (now OSDClub Tel Aviv), which
gathers at Tel Aviv University. There is a different person who works at TAU
and manages this aspect of the club.

So I'm "Shlomi Fish from OSDClub Tel Aviv" not from TAU.
