security/firewall on Linux desktop at home - connection to the Intenet
Hi, Linux-il, My question is about securing the Internet access from a Linux Desktop(at home) to the Internet via ISP ; my setup is quite old: Dlink BR-6504N (IEEE802.11b/g/n) wireless router which is connected to ADSL bezeq device (in my case it is quite old - DSL 2500U), but the question is *in general*. The question is - which firewall is recommended to be running on the Linux Desktop ? (let's say it is either Fedora or Ubuntu). Do you rely on firewalld for Fedora and ufw of Ubuntu ? or do you recommend something else ? And regarding the Dlink router - do you recommend any other wireless router with special security features ? what should we pay attention when purchasing a new wireless router, related to these aspects ? or is it enough to have the firewall software on the desktop itself ? My main focus here is avoiding intrusion into the Linux desktop, but avoiding viruses is also important. Is there a (free) good Anti-virus sw for a Linux desktop that you can recommend? Question about Linux installation and selecting a language
Hi, Linux-IL, I had installed Fedora 21 on x86_64 (server, and with kde). When installation started, I selected the language as "british english" and not "American English". Now when I log in and press some keys, I get unwanted results. For example, when pressing @ I get the " character. Now with the same PC and this same keyboard, with F20 and the default american english everything is fine, no such problem (I did not try with british english though). Any ideas how this problem can be resolved ? Regards, DanS ___ Linux-il mailing list Linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il http://mailman.cs.huji.ac.il/mailman/listinfo/linux-il

SSD drives
Hi, 2 Questions about SSD drives: First, I would appreciate of someone who has SSD disk will run hdparm -t /dev/sda and post the results here. (In the spirit of the recent thread about HW for linux). I have /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 586 MB in 3.01 seconds = 194.68 MB/sec And it interests me to compare results Does a result of, let's say, 400 MB/sec, which is double speed comparing the above result, will boost a task of building a linux kernel (on a dual core machine) in about 1.5 or 2? Second question: I must admit that I am a newbie with SSD, so this question might seem obvoious to others: I saw that inner SSD disks, which are sold in stores like KSP/Ivory, are in laptop form factor (2.5''). Is there some reason that there are no inner 3.5'' disks for Desktops (there are extenal SSD which can be , so I believe, used with desktops) ? Is there something which prevent us from connecting 2.5'' inner SSD to a desktop (I mean STAT2- based or SATA3-based) ? rdesktop question ( using Linux in a windows environment.)
Hi, linux-il, This question might seem a bit not related to Linux; However, it is a real problem which I face daily as a result of that I am trying to use Linux in a windows environment. So I hope you can advice. The problem description: I am using Linux station in a company which is windows-oriented; namely, most desktops are windows. I also have a windows desktop. Most of the day I sit in an office which is in on another floor from where my windows desktop is. I need to access the windows machine quite often for many tasks (for example, reading mail, as the sysadmin did not agree to install install/configure a mail client on the linux machine because this is the policy here). So I use rdesktop from linux to windows. The trouble with this is that every 10 minutes or so, if I do not perform any action in windows, the rdesktop connection is disabled and I have to open a new session of rdesktop. And this is quite annoying ! And I don't have an administrative permission to my windows machine, so I cannot change it. So my question is: is there some workaround ? for example, some windows application which will be awakened every 5 minutes to let the windows machine think that there was some action on windows, and thus the rdesktop session will not finish ? Wireless connection to a remote station
Hello, This is a bit uncommon question: - I have a PC running linux in a basement which is quite far from the Access Point of the house. I want to take advantage of this place to work and to be able to connect to the Internet from this PC in this quite corner. I cannot see the wireless Access Point while scanning with this PC. I tried to connect a long USB cable with a USB wireless NIC, but I get USB errors while using it. I know I can try to move the wireless Access Point closer, but I am afraid that other PCs (which also run Linux) will then suffer lose of wireless connection. I really want to solve my problem without moving it. so my question is: What do you advise ? can I use the exisiting infrasturcture without changes (only additions are OK) to be able to connect to the internet? Can I somehow connect a second wireless Access Point by ethernet cable, and then connect that Access Point (by wireless) to the first, main Access Point ? (something like a bridge). ntpdate and Israel local time
Hello, On my desktop at home, when I want to to update the local time (I live in israel) I run: ntpdate -s ntpserver.huji.ac.il And it work OK. However, there is a server at my work place which I am responsible for. When I run: ntpdate -s ntpserver.huji.ac.il it sets the time to 7 hours earlier (I mean, instead 19:00, it is 12:00). ok, now this is more clear. But is this problem specific to this scenario? I mean, when I use a single machine to connect directly to the internet via bezeq ADSL , without running any iptables rules at all, using PPPOE , I should have the same problem, don't I ? Thanks! I want that the output will be be not the console, as it is by your offer, but to the same file. It can be done by two lines following your suggestion thus: awk -v line_num=5 '{if(NR == line_num){next;} print $0;}' < input.txt > output.txt mv output.txt input.txt Can it be done in one line ? Hello, First I would like to say big thanks to the following bloggers, who mentioned zvi dvir and his struggle; Shachar Shemesh, Oren Maurer, Ori Idan, Doron Ofek. You are great! (Did I miss anyone ? Sorry if I missed anyone, these is what I saw in: http://planet.linux.org.il/) Yet I think it is not enough and I wish more bloggers would accept my call and mention zvi dvir and his struggle in their blogs; mind you, googling for 'zvi dvir' (in hebrew) gives now less than 450 results ! I wish it would be thousands! I wish that there will be some serious initiative to take advantage of this precedent and to change the current status of PC/latop computer market in Israel ; I would wish that some law will be passed that would enforce ***every*** computer store in Israel to sale a PC/laptop with no OS on it, and also would enforce every advertisment of these stores to declare this option clearly. This is election time now. Maybe an Atzuma should be prepared ? maybe some parliament members will be interested in such an initiative ? Can anyone think of something ? I think that taking advantage of this precedent in such a way can really benefit the open source community in Israel. Connection reset by peer error
Hello, I see sometimes on a server the following message in /var/log/messages Connection reset by peer... It is quite rare; usually, it appears where there is some problem on this server; however, I probed into the kernel sources, and found out that we have this definition in include/asm-generic/errno.h: ECONNRESET 104 grepping into the kernel sources shows many places where this error can occur; however, the two most relevant candidates in this machine, (so it seems to me), is disconnection of a tcp connection (see tcp_disconnect() method in net/ipv4/tcp.c) or some usb message (see usb_unlink_urb() method in drivers/usb/core/urb.c). I do have a USB device on that machine. I have reason to believe that the reason in the second one. Is there a good way in which I can know the origin of this message ? Monitor activation of a process (by process name) - is it possible ?
Hello, Is there a way to write an application/a kernel module which will notice when a process named "xyz" starts ? For example, I want to be able to notice when a user statrs a process named "calc" (by running calc, or whatever other unspecified command) and print this notification to a file (or to kernel log). My assumption is that I know **nothing** about that process besides it name, "xyz"; I don't know anything about which ports it uses, (if at all), I don't know the files it uses, (if at all), etc. All I know is ***just*** the process name. And a very important point - I don't know for how long this process will run before exiting. It can be less than a second, and I **MUST** take this in account and handle such a case. Can this be done at all? Regards, Dan = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

AOE and iSCSI (software only)
Hello, Linux-il gurus, I have to decide between two options of exporting block devices on a LAN (same subnet for clients and server) : one is with iSCSI target and iSCSI initiator. The second is with AOE. I am talking about using software tools only, not using special hardware. I had tested AOE with my hardware (no special hw): I had downloaded aoetools from http://sourceforge.net/projects/aoetools/. I had also installed blade server of this project on the server side. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=130453&package_id=143790). I can mount on the client a file which I am exporting on the AOE server. (which is running this blade). My question is this: What are the advantages and disadvantages of using AOE versus iSCSI? Does anybody have any experience/advice regarding using AOE on Linux (sw only, I am not talkin about CORAID, etc) ? Dan, - It could be that you encountered (or "discovered") a kernel BUG with the locking mechansim of bridge devices. - What I would suggest is the following: - First, If you can give more details (kernel version / disto) it would help. - Second, if you can post this mailing list the scripts you are running (for adding/deleting the tun device) and describe the environment (how you exactly start and configure the tun devices, etc). that cause this crash it will really help. I, for one , will happily try to test it on two Linux machines to see if it crash , and I believe that there will be others. But when I press left alt + left shift, the languate is changed to hebrew and I can type in hebrew. Also the scroll lock led is lit. And of course it toggles back to hebrew and english when pressing again left alt + left shift as it should. Any ideas? Re: Using only left alt+left shift key combination as a shortcut for switching between hebrew and english - is it possible ?
Hi, Hetz, may I ask: does this work for you ? I have FC8; First, I removed the keyboard switching checkbox in Gnome. than I tried changing: /etc/X11/xorg.conf thus: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" #Option "XkbLayout" "us+inet" Option "XkbLayout" "us,il" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:Alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll" EndSection And restaring the X server. It did not work. Than I also removed the "hebrew" from keyboard preferences->Layouts. And than restarted the X-server. Still, when pressing "alt-shift" nothing happens. It stays English, and scroll lock led stays unlighted. I do not see any errors in Xorg.0.log in both cases. Any ideas ? Am I missing something ? Using only left alt+left shift key combination as a shortcut for switching between hebrew and english - is it possible ?
Hello, I am using hebrew and English on FC8 with a GNOME desktop. I want to use only the left alt+shift key combination as a shortcut for switching between languages. I choose Alt+Shift to change layout and to toggle between hebrew and English. I did it by going to gnome panel->Keyboard Preferences, and to Layout options/Layout switching. The problem with this is that it changes languages also when Left Alt and Right Shift are pressed !! So , when I try to use the combination "Left Alt + Right Shift + ?" , which is the default shortcut in Midnight Commander (MC) for "find file", I eventually get to changing the language instead of reaching MC "find file" dialog. And I use this "Left Alt + Right Shift + ?" shortcut quite instinctively. Any ideas? Is there any solution so only lefy ALT/SHIFT will change languages (in gnome)? Re: RDMA question
Hello, - First thanks to Oleg for his reply. - I had downloaded and looked a bit at the code of SDP and IPoIB. - It looks quite complex and quite interesting. - I just want to verify that I understood the RDMA principle correctly, so I have a little question: Is using RDMA (wheter it is in ethernet NICs which support RDMA or Inifinibabd) is restricted to Local Area Network ? Can we create a socket across the intenet which uses in any way RDMA? It seems to me that it is **not** possible, but I want to verify I got it correctly. Re: RDMA question
Hi, - I am talking about 1GB ethernet with servers running Linux. - This is a complex project, but to simplify things I can think of this simple scenario: We have a server which has a public IP. (server A). This server get requests from the Intenet; it acts according to the type of requests it gets. Most of the time it creates other requests to a backend server (server B), which is on the same LAN as server A. (can be SQL/oracle/etc). These requests from A to B are TCP requests, and the bandwidth on the LAN between A and B is 1Gb. So the question is: On a principle level, suppose we will want to use RDMA instead for TCP between A and B. (with 1Gb). How much can using RDMA improve performance ? Does it worth it ? or should we think of infiniband solutions like Meallnox HBAs? Note that I am simplifying the case for the sake of giving a more easy to describe situation (but this system is scalable and have more servers which are clones of A and B ). Another thing is: what is the overhead of porting apps to use RDMA (when using 1Gb and infiniband)? is it a lot of work ? do you know a good resource for this task (I saw some tutorial about RDMA API written by Roland Drier). RDMA question
Hello, - There is a lot of talks and publications recently about gigabit/10 GB NICs which have RDMA capability. - As I understood, this NICs improve performance by enabling user space to user space connection, bypassing the kernel. - (I heard that also InfiniBand cards has this feature). - My question is: does anybody have any experience with these kind of nics ? Can he share his experience with us ? Did usage of such nics indeed improve performance ? ADSL modem/router, routing protocols and the Linux kernel
Hello, I am connected to the Internet through bezeq ; my modem/router is BFocus 312+ (ECI). I had performed telnet to the BFocus 312+ (telnet 10.0.0.138, Admin/Admin). It is a Linux-based machine, running 2.4.17-based kernel, as cat /proc/version shows (more precisely, 2.4.17_mvl21-malta-mips_fp_le). I ran: ps aux; this is the list of processes I got: init [keventd] [ksoftirqd_CPU0] [kswapd] [bdflush] [kupdated] [mtdblockd] /usr/sbin/thttpd -d /usr/www -u root -p 80 -c /cgi-b /usr/sbin/pppdmonitor 15 /usr/bin/cm_pc init /usr/bin/cm_logic -m /dev/ticfg -c /etc/config.xml /usr/bin/cm_monitor /sbin/dproxy -c /etc/resolv.conf -d /usr/sbin/udhcpd /var/tmp/udhcpd.conf /sbin/utelnetd -sh As you can notice, there is no routing protocol among this processes (like RIP). On the other hand, I entered the web interface of this modem/router. (http://10.0.0.138, Admin/Admin). There I went to the "Advanced" tab. The "Enable RIP" is NOT selected. The GUI has the ability to enable RIP (Routing Information Protocol), and in fact, you can select between RIPv1, RIPv2 or RIPv1-Compatible, and also a direction (In, Out or both). I must admit that I don't know much about routing. As I understand, this device is currently functioning as a modem which enables direct connection and **not** as a router which propagates routing tables information (Am I right in this?) I have two questions: 1) Suppose I will enable routing (RIPv2). Is it a good thing to do ? What are the benefits of doing so? By doing so, does that mean that the routing tables in the kernel will be updated from time to time by the user-space routing protocols (RIP) ? 2) I want to hack the code. It should be GPL. Did anybody have a clue where I can get it ? Regards, Dan

Hello,I have an x86_64 machine with grub-0.95-13 and Fedora Core 4and an x86_64 machine with Fedora Core 6 with the default grub rpm.TAB completion does not work for me in both. What I do is , run "grub" from bash/tcsh terminal, enter the grub prompt (GRUB>) and then press TAB. In fedora core i386 this lists GRUB commands, thus:"Possible commands are: blocklist boot cat chainloader..." ; here I see nothing,TAB completion simply does not work. Also in x86_64 Feodra , grub> root (hd0,0)/ does not work whereas in i386 it does. When the grub start, its banner declares that it DOES supportcode completion, thus, for example, on FC4: GNU GRUB version 0.95 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.]Did anyone tried it on x86_64 machine (preferably running Fedora), or is willing to take half a minute to try and tell wheter he has GRUB TAB completion on x86_64 machine ? Dual boot solaris/linux machine : how to boot into solaris ?
Hello linux gurus,I have installed a dual boot machine, where first linux was installed and then solaris. It was OK; solaris became the boot partition; I could boot solaris from linux and vice versa. Now on a different machine I tried the opposite - first solaris and then linux fedora core.I choose the defaults for GRUB from the installation program, which is to installit in the MBR.Now I boot into linux, but I don't know how to boot into solaris. Qhen I boot into a fedora core live cd or Solaris live cd ("belenix"),I can mount the solaris partitions and they were kept intact.dmesg | grep solaris (from linux) gives: sda4: this means that /dev/sda4-/dev/sd10 are the solaris slices. I thought of using a chainloader in grub.conf so the linux GRUB will start the solaris GRUB but I am not sure how exactly to do it. I made some trials with this but they all failed.BTW, GRUB on linux and GRUB on solaris are different. GRUB on linux does not recognize UFS, whereas in Solaris it does.In fact in Solaris , GRUB is a patch to gnu GRUB, but it was not sent upstream (should I say : yet?)So: can anybody comment on this ? does anybody have an experience with it?Dan
Nfs mounting and unmounting a machine on which a shutdown is performed later on
Hello, In a thread from linux-il from about half a year a go , there was a discussion about nfs mounting to a machine (on which is afterewards there is a shut down). see: http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il/msg43493.htmlOne of the suggestions there was to use umount -f , and one suggestion was to previously mount it using "-o soft".I encountered a similiar problem: a machine that was nfs mounted was shutdown for maintainance. It was NOT mounted with "-o soft".However, "umount -f" gave me a "device busy" error and unmount was not performed. So I thought about the "-o soft" for mounting this machine in the future.. I did not tried it , but when looking in "man mount" I saw, in "Mount options for nfs" section, the following: soft "This option allows the kernel to time out if the nfs server is not responding for some time. .. Usually it just causes lots of trouble." another option is to use lazy unmounting, which I eventually tried : "umount -l". after some minutes the unmount was completed. Is there a way to nfs mount a machine so when it is down, it could be unmounted immedaiately without getting trouble (as I am afraid will happen if I use "o=soft" option)? Or is this fear is unjustified and there is somebody who tried it and it was OK ? Dan

Re: creating and mounting ufs Creating and mounting ufs filesystem on a loopback device on linux - a problem?
Helllo, from man mount : Mount options for ufs ufstype=value...old Old format of ufs, this is the default, read only. (Don't forget to give the -r option.) the other options (like 44bsd,sun,sunx86 ) seems unrelevant since this ufs was created on linux.Anyhow I added the ufstype=old explicitly to the mount command and got the same error.I also added the -r flag to the mount ("read-only") and got the same error.Did anyone had success with this ? The problem are differences among implementations. Features of some implementations are undocumented, so its hard to recognize the type of ufs automatically. That's why the user must specify the type of ufs by mount option.
creating and mounting ufs Creating and mounting ufs filesystem on a loopback device on linux - a problem?
Hello linux-il,First, running this series of actions (as many know) creates and mountsan ext3 filesystem on my linux machine:dd if=/dev/zero of=/test/disk-image count=10240mkfs -t ext3 /test/disk-image mount -o loop -t ext3 /test/disk-image /loopDirls /loopDir => gives lost+foundNow I tried the same with ufs filesystem (which is common in *BSDand solaris os's ; in linux the ufs support is read-only): First, I had built the ufs module and insmoded it.Running "cat /proc/filesystems |grep ufs" shows that it exists.Second, I had built the mkufs, which is part of ufs-linux. see http://ufs-linux.sourceforge.net/,(I had to apply a patch of Evgeniy Dushistov after some comaplint of Andrew Morton regarding ufs support in linux) see : http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/5/20/48Than I had tried the following series of actions:dd if=/dev/zero of=/test/disk-image count=10240 => 10240+0 records in => 10240+0 records outcd /work/src/ufs- tools-0.1./mkufs /test/disk-image => /test/disk-image: 5.0MB (10240 sectors) block size 16384, fragment size 2048 using 4 cylinder groups of 1.27MB, 81 blks, 192 inodes. => super-block backups (for fsck -b #) at: 160, 2752, 5344, 7936mount -o loop -t ufs /test/disk-image /loopDirI get: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop1, or too many mounted file systems (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)why ? Did anyone succeeded with creating and mounting ufs on a loopback device on linux ? Dan

Renaming a label in partition table
in /etc/fstab, I have: LABEL=/work1 /work1 ext3 defaults 1 2 When I installed FC4 , I had chosen manual partition, and selected /work1 as a mounting point for /dev/hda3; I have more partitions on this disk. (one of them is for the other OS). Is there a **safe** way to change the label /work1 to something else, let's say, /work ? my root ("/") is mounted on /dev/hda7 my boot partition is: /dev/hda1. -- Dan
Linux Based Wireless Router
Hi, I am looking for buying (here in Israel) a Linux-Based Wireless Router which can be used as an Access Point. I want 2 things: 1) That it will serve as an Access Point to stations (linux/windows) with wireless adapters. 2) Even more important, that it will be Linux Based and that it will be possible to hack the Accesss Point code. (for example, adding printk() commands in various points of the wireless stack of the router, building and installing the image and looking at kernel log messages). Because of this I prefer x86 bases stations; and in case the processor is a different one, then that building and installing of the code will be possible with some toolchain (and I prefer that someone have a positive experience in this.) I know that in the past Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router was linux based, but as far as I understood from their web site, the new versions of this router are VxWorks based (how could they do that to us?...) I think that there is still something called WRT54GL wireless router, which is linux-based,but I don't think that it is sold anymore here at stores. TIA, Dan Shimshoni
