Debian mirror?

2011-08-05 Thread Avraham Rosenberg
Hi,
Yesterday I tried to install two packages (Debian sqeeze) from
http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/debian/
The site was unable to complete "apt-get update" or to find the packages.
Is this a temporary hitch ?
If not, are there active alternatives in Israel?

Thanks, Avraham

Make sure you publish it in the Debian's mirror list, with
all the crypto signing stuff working (if you haven't done that yet)...

Re: debian mirror

2003-02-19 Thread Ira Abramov
Quoting Ely Levy, from the post of Wed, 19 Feb:
> How is debian mirroring going in israel?

IGLU is mirroring i386, and Marc is mirroring a few esoteric platforms
from behind ADSL (or is it STILL frame relay? Can't remember)

IGLU is NOT on ADSL, it's most definitely sitting in Actcom's hosting
room on a shelf:

http://fiasco.org.il/maxNeighbours640.jpg

IGLU currently runs very close to its storage limit and Debian's mirror
often suffers a few days without updates. this will hopefully be fixed
with a new promised server from Sun. await further announcements.

I get great speed from IGLU as an Actcom user, I also get excellent
speed from the main US and non-US debian servers, much better than the
European mirrors apt-spy comes up with (full 190KBps from iglu,
130-185KBps from main Debian, 50KBps and less from European mirrors).
note that apt-spy, although it's a cute idea, will not try Israeli
mirrors as none of them are official, nor will it try the main servers
as it obviously tries to take traffic off of them. It is interesting to
try and use apt-proxy if you are going to be mirroring it for a campus.
it could be as good as a mirror if tweaked right, while savng you the
storage space.

> do we have a fast israeli host to mirror from suggestion on which

with your Inet2 backbone connection, no IIX host will beat going to the
source directly, or TAU.

Depends on how you are connected. For .ac.il (that is, at least
me and Eli), it's much faster. Others - please check and report.

Maybe, I am not sure. I don't know about apt-spy, and since I only run
Debian at home currently (and not at tau), it doesn't matter much,
since all of the mirrors I tried were faster than my ADSL.

RE: debian mirror

2003-02-19 Thread linux_il
First - thanks for the effort, it's always a welcomed message to read.

There is a mirror at debian.org.il but I suspect it's connected through an
ADSL
line and not very fast even if I'm connected through the same ISP (Actcom).

I run apt-spy from time to time and it mostly finds hosts in Europe (italy,
belgium, france, germany). I can send you my current sources.list if you are
interested.

(It's a shame this utility can't average over multiple
runs because the results vary widely from one run to another).

I think it would be better if you could pull stuff directly from a main
mirror abroad:

1. If one of the Israeli mirrors goes down for some reason (e.g. disk full
as
happened a few weeks ago) then the other one can serve as a backup.
2. If you mirror a mirror then you are one step behind the rest
3. You might get better performance over the university's line abroad than
from the existing mirror.

Thanks,

There was a discussion on debian-il. The short summary:
1. ftp.tau.ac.il:/pub/OS/Debian mirrors most of Debian i386
2. Debian has netselect, and even something like (I don't remember
exactly) apt-netselect, which can select the fastest mirror for you.
The fastest people found were .no. and .it., both more than 0.5Mbit ADSL.

Hey,
How is debian mirroring going in israel?
do we have a fast israeli host to mirror from
suggestion on which outside coutry source is fast and reliable?
cshuji is going to mirror woodie and maybe surge and sid if we have space

Is something wrong with linux-il Debian mirror?

2002-08-01 Thread Shaul Karl

In the last couple of days my attempts to run

apt-get update

yield much less stuff then I expected.
I tried to verify this with another debian mirror, namely
ftp.debian.org, and indeed got different results. Of course this might
be due to the fact that the linux-il mirror and ftp.debian.org are not
synchronized. Yet I believe there is a problem. Here is what I hope
will be a lead:

** With the linux-il mirror,

I have checked and unstable is a soft link to sid on ftp.debian.org
too.
Therefor it is my guess that the fact that the linux-il mirror just
shows the link while the other mirror follows it is the cause of my
problems. Does this make sense?
I probably could have work around this by having other entries in my
configuration file. However I do believe that every Debian mirror
should exhibit the same behavior. Besides, IIRC the linux-il
mirror used to work the same as the other mirror not so long ago.

i see 2 problems with this attitude:

1. if there's a problem, just report it. being cynical about it won't help
us _fix_ the mirror (if indeed it is a mirror problem). because Ilya is
in the army now, i had to take over handling the mirrors, and since i'm
not a debian user, i don't know which links are missing from the ftp
site for apt-get to work well with them.

2. Yarin clearly stated 'ftp'. you used 'http'. this goes via another
server, and via a different set of links (which are most likely
missing). please try it via the URL yarin wrote and tell us what you've
   got.

i'd also suggest that some debian user that knows what should be there,
try to connect to the ftp server or http server (or log into the machine
with ssh) and start poking around and locate the missing links - and
document them.

guy,
supposed former mirror junky

2001-12-17 Thread Yarin Benado

deb ftp://ftp.iglu.org.il/pub/mirrors/debian woody main
For example.
Replace woody with stable/unstable/testing and add to main "non-free" or
"contrib"

Enjoy...

It's very simple -- we have zero free diskspace on the mirror disk
array. :-(

Apparently yes, and I cannot figure out why it keeps out-of-sync. We
currently rsync from rsync://ftp.debian.org (which points to
ftp.sourceforge.net) and today's rsync seems to have died or hanged.
I restarted the Debian rsync now.

Maybe we need to set a lower timeout, and update the rsync script to
restart syncing if rsync exists with a non-zero exit code.

(I almost gave up on it and moved to ftp.debian.org, but it seems
there's actual demand for our mirror.)

Are there any problems with the linux-il Debian mirror?

2001-04-23 Thread Shaul Karl

It seems to me that the linux-il server has a problem with the Debian mirror.
For example, for the last couple of days I am trying to apt-get the last
version of vim from testing without success. And indeed, there are no visible
files in ftp.linux.org.il/pub/distributions/Debian/pool/main/v/vim while
ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/v/vim has many.

Here are the results of my latest apt-get:

I suspect that electing Avigdor Kahalani as Minister for Science and
Avigdor Liberman as Minister for Internal Security Und Die Rasse would
be a much less explosive idea ;-).

As for registering IGLU and my Debian mirrors - I suspect the IGLU
mirror
qualifies as a mirror - it has a reasonable fat pipe. My own mirror is
on a private (my own) 128Kb FR line. As such, it will not qualify as a
bona-fide mirror by Debian.

I will, out of uncharacteristic mercy, not

let you near a Unix workstation and why was this
done?

For your benefit, therefore, here is the

Regardless of the ideological/culture-jamming aspects of this thread,
there is sufficient similarity between Arabic and Hebrew to make some

There was that article on Salon.com, about Linux adoption in China.
Windows is widely used (and pirated) there. Unlike Linux, Windows is
localized and offers support for Chinese scripts.

On one hand, you'd think the Chinnese communist regime would support
'sharing with your neighbor' (yeah, "FSF are communists", that was an
old piece of FUD by Steve Balmer :) -- but on the other hand, what
could be better than pirating than ripping off the big bad
capitalist Microsoft?

As much as the "free software helps the Third World" posts and stories
on kuro5hin warm my heart, I never thought they had much base in
reality. I think that when most poor people find MS-Windows too
expensive, they simply share it, caring about neither ideology nor
copyright law :)

I doubt very much that our Palestinian friends care more than we do
about copyright laws and the legality of software they use, and I
don't really see a sharp rise in Linux usage in Israel because Windows
is too expensive to buy.

Great! That makes two mirrors provided by our community, one
in Palestine, the other in Israel (aka The Holy Land):

non-free

(s/unstable/sid/ at will - it seems to be there)

The proposed rule is too restricted. You might as well make a special
exemption for Marc F. Volovic (and other Marcs, such as Marc DuQuesne).

My candidate for a more general rule, which adequately covers the subject
and delightfully reveals it:
No four-letter words are allowed, unless they are at least octowords.

With the above mind, I wish the readership of the mailing list delightful

Hello my children,

My Debian mirror is not yet complete (woody/sid).

However, potato is now almost entirely in, main, contrib

  Non-US is not yet in.

wot with potato active, debian.bard.org.il is now willing
to accept http connexions.

Debian Mirror

2001-01-15 Thread Marc A. Volovic

My children,

I have been bitten by that bug again and, having currently
just enough disk space, am downloading Debian to my home machine
as fast as a 128kb/CIR0 would allow.

As soon as the thingy is down, I will create debian.bard.org.il,
allowing you lot to leech .deb by the score.

It is currently at 2.5Gb and downloading. I am pulling a full
Intel tree (i.e. main, contrib, non-free and non-US for potato,
woody and sid), a full sparc tree (ditto) and a full Alpha tree
(ditto).

And, before some unking soul asks, yes - I do have a sparc. It
is a working and VERRRY slow SS5/85. It compiles a kernel in only
83 minutes. If anyone has an AXe he wants to contribute, I am
nothing loth, 'wot since I am trying to make ReiserFS work on
sparc.

And no, I do not have a WORKING Alpha. I have a NON-working
Alpha. An EBM23 SBC, no enclosure, no memory. Any help in this
department would be appreciated, too ;-).

My /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://sunsite.org.uk/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/pub/debian unstable main contrib
non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free
deb-src http://sunsite.org.uk/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/pub/debian unstable main contrib
non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free

It depends on where you're connected to. I'm connected to barak and
sunsite.org.uk is very fast for me. (On a 512kbit connection I get
45k/s or thereabouts.) non-us is taken from non-us.debian.org because
I noticed that the mirrors didn't do the move to partitioned non-us
very well, so I prefer the master server.

As to Marc, he still has a Debian mirror in Israel; here are the apt
lines:

deb http://www.tls.co.il/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://www.tls.co.il/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free

I think it's listed in the Debian mirror list. I don't use them
because the poor bastard only has a 128kbit connection and I can do
better than that. :-)
