Hi,

Does anyone know when there will be a mirror of the Mandrake 7.2 ISO images on
IGLU? When I looked today, only one of the two images was there.

Yes, it is slow. But i noteced that Linuxberg, that i ussually use for ISO
downloading already has about of 400 MB of both images.
With this rate i think afternoon will check again, there are all the chances
it will be there already.
ftp.Linuxberg.com has rather acceptable download rate.

Anyway, http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3 - Mirror list.

Re: Mandrake 7.2 update

2000-11-05 Thread Oded Arbel

Yesterday I've updated two systems - one from RH7.0 and one from Mandrake
7.1 - both got Mandrake 7.2 installed using a network boot diskette, one
using FTP transfers and one using NFS shares (exactly why is pretty
comlpicated, but involves the fact that I didn't have CDROMs, but the ISO
images stored on the computers, which where the only ones on a small LAN).
anyway - the upgrade went smoothly - in the machine that used to be a
Mandrake 7.1 I chose the upgrade path, and it kept all of my settings,
didn't have to change a thing. it updated all the packages and insalled some
brand new 7.2 stuff, and then I went and installed several other things by
hand (mostly things from the extensions CD which I had no idea how to make
the installation use it when installing over the network - it does list the
packages correctly, but it didn't install any of them - maybe I need to have
a single directory tree the holds all the packages , instead of the two loop
mounted ISOs ?).
The box that was an RH7 was a little more dificult - first, it didn't let me
choose an upgrade - all I could do was install a new one. since I didn't
want to format my HDD, i also didn't have much room left on the drive, and
when computing percentage of packeges to install, based on disk's free
space, it didn't take in account the fact that most files will be replaced
by new packages. so I had to manually go over the disk and delete the
binaries and anything that wasn't a configuration I wanted to keep (all was
done using the installation's console, so I didn't need to qut the install -
pretty cool). after that things went smoother - it installed everything it
could found from the first disk (second disk had the same problem I
described above), and didn't delete any of the configuration files I had.
the downside was that I had to manually go over all the configuration and
merge the new stuff with the old settings.
anyway, I know have both machines happily running Mandrake 7.2, and it was
almost no fuss (it probably was going to be less fuss if I would have
installed from CDs directly).
I do recomend to install WebMin - I usually don't really like "all-in-all"
configuration programs, but this one saves lots of pain and anguish if
getting a physical access to the machine is less the easy. just don't do
user managment with it and make sure you know what it does to your
configuration files.
One problem though - I use SSH to connect to the computers remotely - I
usually use either the unix SSH command, the MindBright Java Applet, or a
free Win32 Client called Putty (I use version 0.48). after installing
Mandrake 7.2, which comes with OpenSSH 2.2.0pl1, I can't get putty to
connect to any of the Mandrake 7.2 boxes - I always get a 'protocol
initlisation error'. the other clients are working fine , of course. what
gives ?

Mandrake 7.2 -- Konqueror browser

2000-11-20 Thread solomon

I've been trying out the new Konqueror browser in Mandrake 7.2. It seems quite
good, but I haven't figured out how to get it to work with RealPlayer video.
According to the documentation, it should detect and work with Netscape
plug-ins. That seems to be true for other file formats, but not for RealPlayer.
I've tried www.cnn.com and www.real.com and can't see video in Konqueror even
though these sites work fine in Netscape. Any ideas?

Mandrake 7.2 Scheduling Problem

2001-02-20 Thread Shlomi Fish

I am using Mandrake 7.2 for quite some time now and have noticed a very
strange problem which was not present in Mandrake 7.1. When I run xmms in
order to play mp3s, and do something which is a little CPU intensitive in
parallel, I hear the music muffled. Something CPU intensitive can mean
starting gvim, or opening a terminal window or moving windows around.

In MD7.1 I sometimes heard pauses but nothing quite as frequent as this,
which is really disturbing. It is occuring whether I use KDE, GNOME or
IceWM.

I am running XMMS by using EsounD as my backend. I have a PIII 600 MHz,
with 64MB of RAM, 45 GB of hard-disk dedicated to the Linux, and a
Creative 128 PCI sound card. I did not re-compile a kernel yet, but saw
little incenitive to do so, as my current configuration detects all the
hardware I need.

There was that old problem, also on Windows with Winamp and other music
players, which had something to do with the PCI bus and your graphics
card. Scrolling would interfere with your music.

What graphics card do you have?
If not on XFree86 4.0 already, try upgrading (if your card is supported
there). Upgrading to XFree86 4.0 is a good idea in any case.

Mandrake 7.2 Sound Scheduling (cont.)

2001-03-19 Thread Shlomi Fish

Well, I finally realized that the problem with the xmms scheduling was
that it was using ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) as its
soundcard backend. When I switched it to OSS (Open Sound System), I
managed to run it with much less problems.

Since I have little motivation to prefer ALSA over OSS (I use EsounD for
my sound needs, which works equally well on either architecture), I
decided to stick to OSS for the while.

What Hebrew fonts exactly? Do you have iso10646-1 fonts?

Basically keyboard mapping has nothing to do with kde. Mandrake 7.1
allowed you to select hebrew language and hebrew keyboard at install time.
I assume 7.2 does the same.
You can also change to a hebrew keyboard after install time, using
keyboarddrake. That basically (put aside console key mapping config) edits
XF86Config.

What did you select on install time?

What do you have on XF86Config ? (all the options that begin with Xkb)

gtkbidi gnomeicu -a
biditext kicq

Actually I use licq and simply cut&paste hebrew messages to a near-by text
editor (gvim or gtkbidi gedit)

Generally it's the same for all X programs.

See http://linux.org.il/faq/?file=56

IIRC the default setup on Mandrake 7.1 was that writing Hebrew is only
possible by holding the right alt key. But that's easily improved to
something resonable.

See the Xkb page there.

ALSA provides a full compatible OSS layer - which means you can use ALSA with
OSS sounds. Also - you can find ALSA drivers for XMMS in xmms web site (if
I'm not mistaken)...

As for Esound.. Don't hold your breath with it. It's practically dead. KDE
uses arts and GNOME are moving to GStreamer - and for a good reason - Esounds
take HUGE amounts of resources (specially when you play 2 sounds together)..

I know. I think that's why EsounD worked with it in the first place.
However, I do not want to run xmms directly above ALSA, because that means
nothing else would be able to play a sound at that time.

Well, for the while xmms works with EsounD and MikMod works with EsounD,
and I think GNOME also works with EsounD. So, I'll stick to it until all
of my favourite applications are ported to something else.

It's a pity that the two desktops cannot decide on one unified sound
layer. I'd hate to be able not to hear sounds from both desktops
simultaenously.

Scrambled Menus in GNOME in Mandrake 7.2/8.0

2001-05-19 Thread Shlomi Fish

Hi!

When I'm using GNOME on my (newly upgraded) Mandrake 8.0 system, I see the
main (foot) menu scrambled, while the KDE K menu is displayed correctly.
MenuDrake shows the menu in its proper order, and after I run it as root
and saved the menu, It is still not shown correctly.

I tried to start with a fresh .gnome directory, but it still does not
work. I remember that problem back from Mandrake 7.2, where it was still
apparent.

What should I do to fix it?

I am using Mandrake 8.0 on a Pentium III computer with 64 MB of RAM and
1GB of swap. Everything is as shiped with Mandrake 8.0 (GNOME 1.4, Kernel
2.4.3, etc.). My graphics cards is a GeForce 2 one.

TIA,

Shlomi Fish
