apparently is because the ext2 fs is so much of a different animal than the FAT

Nonsense. FAT uses a FAT . That's why it's called FAT!

The DOS format command destroys everything then rebuilds the fs with whatever
 it needs.

Just like mke2fs.

In Linux it appears the closest thing is rm -rf *. This wipes out all files

Uh, no, that's equivalent to del /s \* (if I recall reightly).

and directories under the current directory without touching the filesystem,

So what?

the "empty" partition right away. Of course you wouldn't want to do this to a
partition on the installation you have booted up in and are currently running.
I am talking about "formatting" a partition on totally another hard drive that

No you aren't.

I mounted onto the current system.

 By the way:

The "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdxX" or "cat /dev/zero /dev/hdxX" IS NOT the way
to do this because not only does it wipe out the superblocks but fills the
entire partition with one huge file full of zeros that involves entirely

No it doesn't.

something else to get rid of. BAD ADVISE, ERIC!!

Nonsense.

mke2fs will restore the superblocks and build the inodes but will not destroy
any data, so it by itself is not "formatting" a partition.

It certainly is! If by "formatting" you mean filling the data area with
zeros, well, then do the dd thing.

Actually in Linux as it turns out doesn't need a "format" command because the
mounted partition is in itself is a directory and you can just clear its data
by deleting it files and subdirectories. The fs remains intack.

Just like in msdos!

I'll take back my complaint now but it sure was a learning experience trying to
 destroy my own data :-)

You haven't satisfactorily complained about your own lack of
understanding. You are mighty confused about something! Would you mind
explaining what?

Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-Fx... you can go to a new login console such

For what definition of "size of a folder"?

You might want to check out the book building linux and openBSD firewalls,
probably tells you more than you want to know right now, but it will make
you think about what you want out of your firewall, which as others have
said is probably the most difficult part of building any firewall.

I disagree entirely, but do go on… I'm interested in this point of

Well, I realize now that I was quite wrong with regards to Kpackage. After
some experimenting, I found it was really good about finding uninstalled
packages. However,
I am noticing some things that I really don't understand:

If I have check dependencies, replace files and replace packages checked off
when installing a package, I find something really strange happens. The
package appears to install, and it appears in the installed packages list.
However, NONE of the files are actually installed.

If I try to reinstall it just using rpm --install on the command line, it
says that it's already installed. So, then I try the replace options on the
command line and it says it is not installed!

I'm not quite sure why this is happening, because the man page for rpm seems
to say that replace packages and replace files will simply replace files if
they are already present, so if they are not present I would assume this has
no effect.

My only solution was to uninstall using Kpackage, and then reinstall using
only the check dependencies option (however, this was quite a pain to do
after I had installed quite a number of packages).

Does anyone have an idea why this is occurring? Am I misunderstanding the
intent of the command options?

Steve

Subject: Linux SLEUTHS! HELP!

I'm the acting (and *not* *terribly* *knowledgeable*) sysadmin in an
academic lab. We have a small farm of linux boxes for running long
(usually overnight, but often multi-day) computation jobs.

We're having a truly bizarre problem. Quite frequently, this one of
our linux boxes, call it A, mysteriously dies in the middle of the
night (we know the approximate time when this happens because one of
us has a demon that periodically checks the status of all the machines
on the network and reports when machines go down). Looking at the
times on A's '/var/log/messages' file after the "crashes", we notice
that invariably it is the same one user (we'll call him X) who shows
up as doing stuff on A, although there is typically a lag of 2-3 hours
between the crash times and the time of first activity, at least as
recorded in '/var/log/messages'. X has a history of resenting sharing
equipment, and resorting to passive-aggressive methods to discourage
others from using his favorite pieces of equipment. But he's sneaky,
and always leaves himself room for deniability. We think that this
time he wants to discourage others from running long jobs on "his"
machine by making it effectively unstable.

We really don't have much recourse (other than installing secret video
cameras to catch him red-handed), but we would like to collect the
strongest circumstantial evidence that we can about this, in case we
have to present formal charges against X.

Any advice on how to do this would be most appreciated.

(Can the system record when someone presses the off or reset button?
I realize this is unlikely, but I thought I'd ask anyway.)

Regards,

KJ

Subject: PPPD kernel support?
Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 18:11:29 GMT

I'm having some trouble with PPPD scripts. When I run the script I've
written, I get a message saying that PPP support isn't compiled into the
kernel, though I _know_ that it is. I can run the network configurator (in
Redhat) and log on using ppp just fine.

I've had this problem before, and fixed it. But I can't remember how I did
it. Could someone drop me a hint?
thanks,

/Karl

I have Hebrew Win 95, a problematic version of Win95 and it is stable
now, so I will not risk adding partitions and OS, but I want to
 exercise UNIX using Linux.

I have heard of such tools but need to know if any one experienced an
easy and smooth installation, before I jump into the water.

Look into the Linux UMSDOS How-To. I know alot off the diehards don't like this
approach but you can give
Linux a try and you don't have to destroy anything on your HD. I did this myself
because I had DOS6.22,
WFW3.11, Win95, WinNT on my machine. I h
