I believe it is trying to say that it can't deliver to sendmail. If
you're sure that sendmail is running and this only happens with one
account then check that you've got the user name correct in fetchmail.

Is the user name at the remote server the same as the local where you're
trying to deliver the mail? If the names are different then you should be
using something like the following line in fetchmailrc

poll remote_server with proto POP3 user [EMAIL PROTECTED] there with
passwd is harry here

Mail server issues

2002-06-27 Thread Brian Witowski

I am getting the following error in my fetchmail log file upon trying to get
mail from a POP3/IMAP account:

fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: can't raise the listener; falling back to /usr/bin/procmail -d
%Tfetc
hmail: IMAP< )

I only get it with one account. I don't have a problem with it 'falling
back' but it takes about 7 or 8 minutes to time out. I don't know enough
about email to figure out what it's trying to do. Any suggestions as to
what is causing the error and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Brian

how to generate landscape oriented postscript files?

2002-06-27 Thread Net Llama!

Joel, if you're listening, this is prolly right up your alley

I've got a bunch of PNG images, and I want to be able to turn them into
postscript files, that will print with landscape orientation. As an
added bonus I want these to be color postscript files, since i want to
print them on a color printer.

So, how would i do this from the commmand line?

OK, good news for sylpheed users.

The sylpheed-claws (development branch) is smart enough to figure out
that the mail came from a list, and Reply sends the reply to the list,
even though the list has been changed not to automate reply to list.

I heard this topic commented on, in other lists also. Presumeably the
gentoo list's behaviour is the correct one. You know, as smart as we are
on these lists, you'd think we could come up with something nifty that
would make this problem trivial. From a user point of view, of course.

Its the CD. You're getting a medium error, and the CD is the medium.
Are you sure that you're not burning the CDs at a speed that is faster
than what they're rated for? Usually when you run cdrecord, it will
beable to determine the speed rating of the CD in its output, and this
sometimes differs from even what's on the label.

Disappearing files on CD-Rs

2002-06-27 Thread Bill Campbell

I've come across a strange situation in which files seem to go missing from
CD-R drives. The files are really there, but can't be found after some
period of time on various Linux systems ranging from Caldera OpenLinux 1.3
with a SAF SCSI CD-R drive to a Caldera 3.1.1 Workstation with a SCSI
Nakamichi 5 disk CD changer.

The ISO images were made on a Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 system running
mkisofs-1.12b5-3, and burned on an Apple G4 running OS X 10.1.3 (it's much
faster than the 2x SAF drive).

It appears that the problem may be media related. I've attached what I
think are the relevant portions of dmesg output from a COL 3.1.1
Workstation system when I ran a script that tested for the presence of each
file that is on the CD. I ran the same script on the G4, and it found all
the files without errors.

The media in this case is no-name from CompUSA, written at the default
maximum speed on the G4. I'm burning a new one, this time on a TDK ``32X
compatible'' CD-R to see how that works.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this other than cheapo media?

I've been doing this for quite some time now, sans the links to
/lib/modules. Initially it was to overcome issues with LILO being able to
find the kernel in large disks. Now its just habit. Interestingly, When
using the "custom" option in the RedHat installer and the letting disk
druid automatically partition the disk, the result is the same. 50mb
/boot , some amount for swap, the rest for root.

IMHO Franklin Covey is yuppie vapor ware left over from the '90s. They
sell time management fluff that runs on a Palm. The dot com crowd now
has lots of free time available so I think their market is now zip.

no links.

OK, here's what I do:

/boot contains:
kernel-x.x.x (usually called bzImage-2.4.x-xfs-1.1 or some such)
System.map-x.x.x (same extension as kernel)
/modules

/boot is not mounted by any distro, if/when I need to alter it, I mount
it, work with it, umount it.

my lilo.conf contains various images, such as:
image = /boot/bzImage-2.4.18-xfs-1.1
label = foo
root = /dev/hda2
read-only

image = /boot/bzImage-2.4.18-xfs-1.1
label = bar
root = /dev/hda3
read-only

I build the kernel on one partition (say /dev/hda2). After a complete
install and test boot (usually via a boot disk w/ the kernel dd'd to it),
change lilo.conf, run lilo, copy /lib/modules to /boot/modules, then mount
/dev/hda3, cp -a /boot/modules to /lib/modules there. This copying is
necessary because /boot is on /dev/hda1 which is never mounted,
/lib/modules/... needs to be accessed early on in the boot process (and so
must be on the root partition).

Now I can boot 27 or more different root partitions (distros) using the
same kernel and modules.

That help?

Ciao,

David A. Bandel

Re: /boot partition and modules/kernels

2002-06-27 Thread Roger Oberholtzer

Do you mean the initrd (initial RAM disk), which is in /boot? That is where
you place some modules needed by the kernel. Mainly those relating to
eventually accessing the root disk, where the remaining things are then
found. Are you wanting to place other modules there? Unless you hack the
setup, they will not be used. After the kernel loads the drivrs needed to
mount the root partition, this ram disk is deleted. I do not think the
kernel will load other modules there. Of course, I bet there is a script
somewhere that controls this at boot time. But it is all in the initrd
stuff.
