No. The GPL simply means that if you distribute software that I wrote or a derivative thereof, you must distribute it under the GPL. If you don't want to, then don't use my code. Write your own. At least the GPL gives you the choice. Think about it. Do you want to spend your time writing a piece of software, distribute it along with the source code so that others can improve upon it, and have someone steal it and close the source. I decided to install FreeBSD and give it a try. My drive geometry is set to 193821 cyls/63 sectors/16 heads. FreeBSD's fdisk says that's incorrect and wants to use 12161 cyls/63 sectors/ 255 heads. User login hangs system
I decided to give gentoo a try recently, and also decided to play around with alsa. I couldn't get alsa working, but that's a problem for another day. In trying to get the alsa modules to load, my system would hang, taking out everything(keyboard, network), requiring a manual reset. Now my system appears thoroughly hosed. It hangs just like above when I try to log in as a user other than root. I tried removing the user and adding it again, as well as adding a new user. I have no problems with root. When I run a command, such as less somefile, the screen fills up with junk, I get a message telling me to hit enter(I forget the exact message). When I hit enter, the command executes as normal. One other thing. reiserfsck reports no filesystem corruption and nothing shows up in my logs. Any ideas. I thought about recompiling the bases system, but it doesn't seem to me that reinstalling everything would be necessary. I don't see that at all. Now I'm confused. So than X must have to be installed first. But the sxs says to install freetype-1.x, freetype-2.x, mesa, and zlib first. I've got zlib installed already. Ok. I've read the rest of the freetype sxs. It's here by the way: http://sxs.homeip.net/freetype.html. And here's the sxs that I'm following for X: http://sxs.homeip.net/xfree_4_x_ttf_aa.html. It says to install freetype, delete the source dir, unpack it again, and configure it for X, so that it installs under /usr/X11R6. Alright, nevermind. I think I'll just try to get a basic working X and try to get the rest working at another time. Re: kernel modules
Alright. Now I've done it. I needed to rebuild my kernel after-all, and I didn't make a backup of my working kernel(1 of my finer brain-dead moments). I ran 'make modules install' instead of 'make modules_install'. I ran make modules_install afterward. Now I can't boot. It just says 'loading kernel...' and freezes. This is for an lfs system, so I do have another working system. So I chrooted to my lfs partition and ran 'make menuconfig'. I probly don't need that but anyway... It appears I've hosed Ncurses. Here's the output: rm -f include/asm ( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm) make -C scripts/lxdialog all make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog' collect2: cannot find 'ld' >> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries. >> >> You must have Ncurses installed in order >> to use 'make menuconfig' make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog' So here's the question: can I fix this? I've compiled a kernel and I realize I want to compile 2 more modules. If I run make menuconfig, without make mrproper, will all the selections that I had previouly chosen stay that way? They have to be installed, not upgraded. Mandrake update is supposed to install it rather than upgrade it, but usually it screws up. It might be fixed in 8.2, but I don't know, and I'm not brave enough to find out. What's so hard about downloading a kernel and 'rpm -ivh' anyway? You can't use linux and never expect to use the cli. If you do, you'll no doubt eventually run into a problem that you can't fix with a gui. And what happens if you lose your gui? And don't say it can't happen. It happened to me just recently. I use galeon. Not the latest. I should upgrade galeon and mozilla. Although I've been told that if I try the latest mozilla milestone, I wouldn't use galeon. I mainly prefer galeon because of it's ability to disable pop-ups. I don't care for that middle frame. What's it for? And it's resizable in case it's not supposed to be. You can shrink it upward. I think the mirror and the editor tables might look better with a white background. But that's minor. The big thing for me is that middle frame. Re: Compiling avifile
Actually, it says on the website that binary packages don't work well. Apparently there's a lot of optimizations that have to be made when it's compiled. that's probly why most vendors don't include it. On another note, you need to run ./configure with --disable-gcc-checking as an option if you're using gcc2.96. I got a rather strong message regarding gcc2.96 until I did that. I think it said "gcc2.96 is not and never will be supported" or something like that. On Friday 15 March 2002 04:59 pm, Aaron Grewell wrote: > That's great. Re: Compiling avifile
I tried MPlayer first actually. ./configure didn't get any further than checking my compiler: gcc2.96. Is it really that bad? I tried it with a --no-debug option -or something like that- and it bombed. Maybe I'll try it again and try to find out what went wrong. One question though. Why replace the libavcodec directory in the MPlayer directory with another one? Or did I misinterpret something? I hope I made that clear. Compiling avifile
I'm trying to install avifile form source as per the SxS. But first, a general compile question. If I type in "./configure 2> dump" to redirect standard error, and than "make 2>> dump" to append to the file, will that give all the error messages that I need to find out why it failed? That's what I did and I've attached the output below. I grabbed these packages: divx4linux-20011025.tgz, binaries-011002.tgz, then I did the cvs thing and grabbed the latest source. divx4linux and the win32 binaries appear to have installed ok. When I typed "./autogen.sh" It says something is missing. I don't know what that would be. Then when I typed "./configure I get a warning that it can't find SDL >= 1.1.3. I have libSDL1.2.2-1mdk installed. Is there another SDL package that I need? Anothing thing I should mention is that I'm using gcc2.96. Could this be the whole reason that it failed?
