Re: Howto with NT problems
Kieth, I had a look at the manual @ http://www.tunstallgroup.com/support-userManuals.html and it looks as if the vision software uses integrated NT security to handle it's passwords. If you download the PNC3 Vision User Manual Book 1 it should point you in the right direction. It has instructions on doing all the stuff you have asked about. Here's a mail Alan Cox sent the W3C before the Sept. 30th deadline. Internet seems to have been surprised by this commando type move of W3C. Big LILO Mistake
I screwed up my lilo.conf file big time and ran /sbin/lilo. Now I cannot boot that partition. However, I can access it from another partition. Is there a way that I can rerun /sbin/lilo from one partition yet have it write the correct map file and boot sector to the other partition? I think this is possible from reading the LILO Users Guide but I'd hate to blow up the unaffected partition also. Unfortuantely, it is a v ery common configuration. No, what Burns meant (if I may) is that far too many organizations believe a firewall is sufficient protection against attack, which it isn't. If your only security tool is a firewall, you have nothing to protect your internal network once the firewall is breached -- under sustained attack, *any* net-connected firewall can be breached -- so, for example, those clear text passwords that telnet and the r* services pass around are easily snooped. On the other hand, if you disable telnet and r* services internally and required the use of SSH, packet sniffers won't catch clear text passwords because their aren't any to catch. Properly conceived security is comprised of layers of protection, not some electronic equipment of the Maginot line that airplanes can fly right over. They're equiped with ess sound chips. Caldera 3.1 will install on them without problems and even detect the sound system. It loads the right chip driver along with the ac97_codec driver. Since the onboard sound chip sucked for VOIP, I did a shut down, turned off the box, plugged in a soundblaster value live (PCI) sound card and rebooted the machine. After I got to a console, I rmmod the maestro3 sound driver, modprobe or insmod (whatever you like) the sb live driver emuk10k and bingo... the ess stuff is disabled, my sb card is running like a champ. VOIP works pretty good on this compaq stuff too. On the PCI bus, the irq's are passed out to the various cards so as to not cause any conflicts. Since I don't load the driver for the ess chips, they are more-or-less cut out of the system. I'm not real thrilled by doing this, but there's no way, short of removing the chips off the motherboard, to disable them othewise. Is that good enough for disabling the onboard hardware? Seems to be. There's no unusual problems or anything out of the ordinary. > Can anyone shed some light on this? Building a machine on the cheap - MB Info
I am looking at building a machine on a shoestring, actually using some existing parts and blah blah, you get the idea. I have decided I want to go down the Athlon route again and have been looking up boards to see what has given people fits when used with linux. NOTE: I don't intend to go down the overclocking path, as I just don't have the patience to see how far I can "push it" One board that has shown favorable reviews for quality and reliability, the ECS K7S5A, which includes AC97 audio (which is supposed to be the same across al boards is it not?). "SiS 7012 PCI" are the specs from the ECS website. And a built-in NIC, which according to the ECS site is a: "SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet". After digging into these two items, I found links to driver info for the SiS900 NIC which has apparently been supported for some time, both on the ECS site and on the web. However the the SiS7012 search didn't fare as well. With Skippy's recent posts on the subject of AC97 sound I am concerned it won't work. Along those lines, can these AC97 devices be disabled? I am wondering if this thing will mung up or otherwise interfere with my ability to use a known functional sound card based. Can anyone shed some light on this? I received something similar from rogers@home in Canada, but with a slightly different tone, note the sale to AT&T. To: All Rogers @Home high speed Internet customers A couple of weeks ago we made a commitment to keep you updated on any developments regarding Excite @Home in the U.S. Yesterday Excite @Home announced that it has agreed to sell its high-speed Internet access assets to AT&T, pending court approval. We are very pleased with this announcement as Rogers has worked well with AT&T in the past and continues to do so. As you may know, AT&T is one of the largest communications companies in the world. At the same time, Excite filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. This action allows Excite to remain in control of its business and provides it with protection from creditors pending completion of the sale. Please be assured that our commitment to you remains to provide you with the best high speed Internet service. I got this one this morning ---quote on--- Dear Comcast @Home Customer, On Friday, September 28, Excite@Home, the Internet service provider for Comcast @Home, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to allow them the opportunity to restructure their financial situation with their creditors. As you may know, financial restructuring allows companies that have declared bankruptcy to continue to operate their business successfully. More than five years ago, Comcast committed to the high-speed Internet business by partnering with Excite@Home, and we continue to be committed to providing high quality, reliable service. We are confident that Excite@Home, whose major shareholders include AT&T, Cox and Comcast, will maintain all e-mail and web space services for our customers. Comcast will continue providing its customers with the best high-speed Internet service both now and in the future. We are doing everything possible to ensure that the 950,000 customers we will serve by year-end will continue to be served well while Excite@Home restructures its financial situation. ---my comment--- That's almost 40 million dollars a year and they can't pay their bills?! Cut me a break. ---my comment off--- Comcast views high-speed Internet as one of the most important products in our portfolio and we remain committed to this business and to our customers. We thank you for choosing Comcast and look forward to continuing to provide you with the best high-speed Internet service available. ,--- Forwarded message (begin) Subject: [loki-announce] A Letter to Our Customers From: Kayt Sorhaindo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 02:21:44 -0400 Dear Friend of Loki: As you may know, on August 3, 2001, Loki filed a Chapter 11 reorganization. As our valued customer, we wanted to let you know why we have elected to reorganize and how, if at all, it will impact our ongoing business. Under US law there are two kinds of bankruptcy: 1) Chapter 7 is a liquidation. We have not filed a Chapter 7 and have no intention of doing so. 2) Chapter 11 is a reorganization. This will allow us to deal with our creditors fairly and equitably and at the same time continue to operate the company. We are still shipping products and porting new games and expect to be doing so for a long, long time. Most of the debts we are restructuring through the Chapter 11 are well over a year old. They represent mistakes made by a young company. We've learned from our mistakes and become cash positive. Going forward we have every confidence that Loki will continue to be successful and grow. We cannot say for certain how long Loki will remain in Chapter 11. It depends on many factors. However we do intend to bring the process to a conclusion as quickly as possible. Once our plan of reorganization is accepted by the court, our creditors will receive an agreed upon settlement and all other prepetition obligations will be fully and finally discharged. During and after the reorganization your orders will continue to be honored. We will continue to provide end user support, bug fixes and new products. Negotiations are in progress to guarantee Loki a steady stream of additional AAA games to bring to Linux. Most importantly, we'd like to thank each of you for your support over the years. Without our customers, we are nothing. The outpouring of support we have received in the last few days has been overwhelming, and we will continue to do everything we can to merit that support. weird problems chapter ???
I've been experiencing weird hangs from time to time. This usually occurs when the cpu (K6/II 300 with 64M) is running flat out and swaping is active, like when I run a set of kde compiles (many hours) and continue to use the box for email and browsing. At first I thought Opera might be the culprit, but I've seen the problem occur without opera. My environment 2.4.4.9+ kernel, X 4.1.0, Savage video card, XFCE, sylpheed, nothing bleeding edge with compiler or glibc. Swap file is active, and I have more than 2X physical memory. The symptoms are: When browsing at high system loads, the mouse and keyboard stop responding. Reboot required. Thanks goodness I use resierfs. FYI, I have run the memtest86 tests, and my memory (well my PC's memory, my own is another story) appears to be ok. I used tcpd to wrap my inet supplied services. In my host.allow files I spawn scripts to check on certain conditions before access is granted. I tried to have a script mount a samba share, but it failed. Only root can mount samba shares on my machine (I haven't figured that out yet.) So, the question is, is it safe to make tcpd suid with chmod 4777 tcpd? I imagine doing this will make the scripts spawned by tcdp run with root privilege.
