That is not true. I have sit up triple boot systems running NT

You just have install windows first which make it easier down the

A think alot more info is needed here. Which distro, how is all of
this setup? Linux, out of the box, isn't capable of connecting to a
remote modem, so you had to have set this up in some capacity at some
point in time. Care to explain?

Not at all. I'm running Mandrake 8.1 using DHCP. The problem was
intermittent at first, but is pretty persistent, now. My server is a
WIN 98 box that I connect to through a Linksys switch. My NIC is a
Realtek 8139. I have a hardware A/B switch in the phone line to
completely shut the server out of the phone line. I put that in when my
eDesktop install (different box than this Mandrake box) would
intermittently do this same thing. What both installs and boxes have
had in common is the WIN 98 server. It's a standard network setup
though, only needed protocols. Let me know if you need any other info.

of a host that isn't BOTH _local to your network_ AND _locally listed

 resolv.conf causing the dial out.

 Perhaps?

If this doesn't do it, you'll have to have tcpdump or ethereal come

what's leaving the linux host bound for where.

Re: hdc

2001-11-21 Thread Randy Donohoe

That's because the /dev directory does not contain 'files' as such
but simply a look up table for the all-important device nodes. Major
/ minor nodes are like PO boxes, each one is uniquely assigned, and
set in concrete. to a specific type of driver (scsi, cd, video, etc).
The nodes are used to communicate with a given driver, the name
'hdc', or 'pink_elephants', has no meaning to the driver, simply that
'pink_elephants' is an accepted alias for a node. Thus there was no
problem symlinking node 11/1 to 'hdc', it simply meant that the label
'hdc' was henceforth a scsi cd driver name. (unusual but not an
 issue).

What happened however is that by doing so you removed any nodal
reference to 22 0, the device node that the ide cdrom driver expects.
Thus, your DVD 'dissappeared' because there was no means of accessing
22 0, even though the driver was sitting there patiently waiting.
X CD Roast recommends labeling it a scuzzy, but the actual command came
from a member of the Mandrake team who generally gives the best advice
on their list. Maybe it just didn't agree with my box. So, how do I get
my DVD recognized? Somebody from this list, I can't remember the name,
gave me the correct mknod command, but it comes back and says the file
exists. Thanks, Mike.

This is a permissions problem, but not in the way you think, and has
 nothing to do with KDE.
It is solely related to /etc/fstab, and the entry for your floppy
drive. The 4th column has all the permissions controls, and you will
need to add the comma separated entry of 'user' to allow mortal users
 the right to mount floppies.

Re: A couple of Questions about Debian Linux/Storm Linux

2001-09-25 Thread Randy Donohoe

I have to agree on this: after running Libranet for several months
and getting used to the irritating Debian anal retentive security
policies, I am comfortable with this distro, the way I am
comfortable with eDesk 2.4. Perhaps the common quality is both
distros give one a sense of confidence.

Caldera WS 3.1 was a discomfort at first because COAS was gone, but
after playing with it a while I can appreciate the logic in the
integration of the admin tools into KDE. Last night I upgraded to
KDE 2.2 (using a CD obtained from chguy), and after it finally dawned
on me that you can't upgrade KDE while in it, I had KDE 2.2 installed
and running in ten minutes. Very impressive end product. A new
Libranet was due out this month, but has been postponed. I suspect
the delay is in order to include KDE 2.2. It should be impressive
 too.
I've been waiting for the announcement on the new Libranet, didn't know
it had been delayed. Somebody on the list said it was going up to
$40.00, but that's OK, don't mind paying $40.00 for an OS that works
reliably. Hate paying $200-$300 for one that's unreliable, though.

Re: A couple of Questions about Debian Linux/Storm Linux

2001-09-24 Thread Randy Donohoe

No, I am not another Caldera refugee. I still participate in the
Caldera list, and have installed WS 3.1 on my recently upgraded lab
rat. I am in no hurry to adopt WS 3.1 - or any other bleeding edge
distribution for that matter, since eDesk 2.4 still does everything I
 need reliably.

Yes, I do use Libranet 1.9.1 w/o Reiser FS. Libranet and eDesk are on
the same system I am sending this from. It seems to perform a bit
more sprightly on a K6-2 350 mHz than eDesk 2.4. Debian has some
irritating features and characteristics compared to eDesk. Debian
security policies make simple tasks like installing new apps
complicated. I tried Libranet earlier this year because I wanted to
check out the new 2.4 kernel and KDE 2. I also wanted a Debian
installation to replace Corel Linux. I decided to buy Libranet vice
Progeny because it is cheaper and comes with RPM support on-board.
(Try to install Applix 5.0 on a Debian!)

The admin tools are well organized. Recompiling the kernel. e.g. to
enable IDE CD-RW support is handled smoothly and simply by the kernel
 utility.

For $25 you get a polished and well endowed distribution of the
Debian persuasion, with the ability to install your legacy RPM apps
 without any bother.
Sorry for the mis-characterization, I still think of this list as the
Caldera refugee list. I'm still subscribed to the Caldera list, hoping
one day they'll start maintaining eDesktop, again. I think eDesktop and
Libra are somehow very similar, but I can't put my finger on it. I know
both have been exceptionally stable for me. The kernel tool in xadmin
is great on Libra.

significantly faster than any variant of Code red.

Cost -- Unknown, probably moderate per infected system.

The worm itself is a file called
  README.EXE, or ADMIN.DLL
a 56K file which is advertised as an audio xwave mime type file.

  Other RISKS:
There is risk of DOS of network segments by traffic volume alone
There is large risk of successful attack to both Internet exposed
IIS
boxes and to developer and Intranet boxes inside of corporations.

Judging by the Code Red II experience, we expect many subtle routes
of infection leading to inside corporate infections.

We cannot discount the coincidence of the date and time of release,
exactly one week to (probably to the minute) as the World Trade
  Center attack .

  REPLICATION:
There are at least three mechanisms of spread:
The worm seems to spread both by a direct IIS across Internet (IP
  spread)
It probably also spreads by local shares. (this is not known for
  sure at this time)
There is also an email vector where README.EXE is sent via email to
  numerous accounts.

  Mitigations
  TruSecure essential practices should work.
Block all email with EXE attachments
  Filter for README.EXE
Make sure IIS boxes are well patched and hardened, or removed from
  both the Internet and Intranets.
Make sure any developer computing platforms are not running IIS of
any version (many do so by default if either.
  Disconnect mail from the Internet
Advise users not to double click on any unexpected attachments.
Update anti-virus when your vendor has the signature.

Second - Bin ladin is a businessman. He has actual, physical
business interests and stock investments which produce large amounts
of money. He is the first businessman terrorist. I made no comment
on where he got his startup funds - that was irrelevent, and still
 is.
I don't want to get into the argumentative portions of this thread but
I saw something interesting on the news last night. Germany, I believe,
is investigating whether bin Laden bought shares of the company
insuring the WTC, then sold them short or whatever it 's called where
you profit if the share price goes down.

Been using Libranet Debian exclusively for a couple months now. Good
distro. www.thedukeofurl.org has a review of it if you want to check it

Subject: gateway to Gateway protocol

 Hello Everybody,

After having tested a lot of new distributions and Windows2000 I'm
back in
business with a working Linux workstation. The last 2 months have been
terrible as I was more or less stuck with a w2k PC I had to use and
Linux
testing that was a mess. It's a major pain to be forced to look for a
new
alternative after having had a working setup tweaked to the upmost to
fit
my needs. On top of it some new distributions should really spend a
few
weekends looking at what they're releaseing and not get blinded by all
the
success and green bills people are waving at them.

I haven't been able to stick my nose into Debian but would like to
find
out more about it. Anybody on the list using it everyday!??

OK, now to the question: Could somebody explain me what the
gateway-to-gateway protocol is about (/etc/protocols = 3) and what is
 causing the following logs:

Aug 8 08:50:38 wall kernel: Packet log: output REJECT eth0 PROTO=1
 195.132.181.80:3 195.55.190.134:3 L=96 S=0xC0 I=28405 F=0x T=255
(#76)

 Zoran.

Re: How to load modules in SUSE 7.1 at boot up

2001-07-05 Thread Randy Donohoe

My Libranet(debian-based) didn't have a rc.local so I created one and
still couldn't get my soundblaster module to load so I just put
modprobe sb in my /etc/modules file and it's loaded on boot-up
since.

Marianne, For my info, is there no /etc/rc.d and rc.local ??

There has to be an easier way to do this that I am just missing??
