Administrivia - Everyone please read!

2001-08-14 Thread Douglas J. Hunley

I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that we have lost some list
members because of the posting of a nude (though tastfull IMHO) picture. A
couple of people have also indicated the references to sexual interaction w/
animals to be "pushing it".

So, let's move the converstaion back to Linux shall we everyone?
And no more nudes! I'll have to unsub any future offenders.

Thanks for the warning Doug. I posted the, evidently, offending photo

using one of those _other_ readers). I apologize again.

I think I may have to unsub myself, Douglas, if you have to take
similar action again, because of what appears to be a few people's reactions.
One of the things I cannot stand is the idea of Political Correctness, and
one-size-fits-all ideas and opinions.

I appreciate you have to take into account all shades of opinion on an open
forum, but, as Michael has pointed out, no-one was forced to open his
attachment, and when the jokes started running, no-one was forced to follow
the thread. Still less did they have to leave the list for a single instance
of a photograph of a young woman being posted (as an attachment) or a joke
that sparked a half-dozen slightly/rather/insert-own-adjective off-colour
responses.

Nobody posting intended or wished to offend anyone, I am certain, and the
list is not going to change its general tone and values over one or two
posts.

IMHO we are all part of the same world community, and should, I believe, take
views that disagree with our own opinions as equally valuable and/or valid
points of view. Tolerance is what is needed, IMO, not over-reaction, or PC.

If nothing had been said (or done in the cases of those who have unsub-ed)
this thread would have died out in a very short time with no adverse affects.

Diversity and tolerance, please. My tuppence worth.

You were not the only one who missed that and I am also annoyed, about it.
Not that it would have done me much good as I have lost my instruction manuals
(1933 issue) and my memory is very faulty too.

I would concur that the loss of one or two listees due to some mild exposure and
some smutty humor is of little consequence. I remember in the Caldera list that there
were/have
been some close to the bone stuff, with mixed (dear old EF) membership.

As someone has iterated _tolerance_ , but some are biggoted.

I, too, think the linux stuff is most important, but I haven't lost my

felt compelled to unsubscribe. Otherwise, we could just rename the list

Years ago (never mind how many) I took part in a short day-run on a new
West German Fast Patrol Boat doing high speed trials in the Kattegat (Baltic).
For several hours this interesting piece of marine engineering, the pride of the
German Navy, was roaring up and down the Helgoland coast. The Norwegian and
Danish personnel onboard were suitably impressed. Meanwhile, a number of the
US and Canadian sailors were fighting over the optical gunnery sights and
binoculars in order to leer at the nudists on the beach. I remember being
embarrassed at our typical North American attitude toward the human form and
natural nudity - particularly as our Germans hosts were angry that their
hospitality was being ignored and that they were denied a chance to demonstrate
something they had obvious pride in. The Danish and Norwegians just shook their
heads in disbelief.

It's truly odd that some folks can be offended (to the point of unsubscribing)
by something as natural as the human body, even in the least provactive of
poses... while yet others (such as those in the incident outlined above) insist
on turning it into something lurid and unclean. People are the funniest of
animals.

BTW, I am NOT a naturalist. I am uncomfortable even taking my shirt off in
public, so I guess I share some of these same inhibitions.

I must agree wholeheartedly with you. I've had discussions like this with the
people at work who have kids. We think it's a horrid thing to expose a
teenager (even some adults) to a naked human body...but they let their children
watch (even watch themselves) people on TV shooting each other, selling drugs,
blowing s#it up and generally wreaking havoc.

I have to wonder, given the choice, would these people prefer their kids
download some "nudie pics" (the human body), or D/L "How to make a pipe bomb"
or the anarchists handbook (more havoc and destruction)?

Well, I like nude pictures, but I 'll go to such lists to download nude
pictures, not here.
This picture is beautiful and I don't think anyone should really be
offended. But, if one views it from Douglas angle, one would be able to see
that it does post a problem to him who has the responsibility of managing
the list.
If he had allowed this one, he would have to allow another one, maybe not so
artistic, maybe more of a porno style. Where does he draw the line to
determine that this one is ok but not the other one? Once you get to this
point, you know that you could only say -- no nude pictures on this list ---
the same as Douglas did.

If a person is setup to open attachments inline, its time to get a clue, get
windows, then quit computing because you cant figure out how stuff that
little antibiotic pill into your floppy drive without breaking it open. If,
OTOH, they clicked the attachment to open it then they should chalk it up to
experience and, again, get a clue. Dont open attachments that are named after
a woman. That is the same type of person that would loudly complain after
stepping in dog poop time after time and never realize they have a
responibility to watch where they are going.

Possible the answer lies in stripping all attachments, then these threads
will only develop because of my mule, which I shall never speak of again. But

Lurid and unclean? If that's what you want then I suggest you turn on the History
Channel.
There's not a provocativly posed breast in sight, but all day long you can learn about
who
killed whom, in how many numbers, where, with what and why and in graphic detail. No
offense
intended to anyone who has ever served their country in that nation's armed forces,
but it would
appear that as a species we're a bit unbalanced.

Now we return you to your regularly scheduled linux discussion ...
