Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reminder. Let us know when the ubuntu/java version will
be decided.

Anyway, the recent OpenJUMP 1.12 is compatible with java 7, so that an
upgrade of
OpenJUMP in the next OSGeoLive should be possible anyway.

Re: [OSGeoLive] Help needed to get info. on suppliers for OSGeoLive11.0 USBs?

2017-11-12 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi Suchith --  from the OSGeoLive side, Astrid and I are thinking
about this now, and possibly others.. The USB storage devices are
plentiful and increasing in capacity. Shopping is always a matter for
several factors, like price, shipping and return policy.

The hard part is.. that the USB device "boot" capabilities are not
at all as reliable as the DVD form factor used to be.
In Boston, we shipped a storage device with a VirtualMachine disk
image, and not as 'bootable'.

What is your time frame for purchasing ?  We can go to private mail
or IRC with the details if is it convenient.

Hi Suchith,

For Foss4g Bonn we had the logos printed of OSGeo Live and OSGeo on
either side of the USB stick. A little more costly, but worthwhile for
our image. With the new logos developed it would provide a great
opportunity to use them this way.

A Dutch supplier and Astrid and a team in Bonn put the files unto them
later on.

interested to procure these can contact them.

I believe OSGeo Live is a great resource for our outreach aims and I
am determined to get this to new communities. For example, many in
the Agriculture community who use GIS are not even aware of this
resource. I am in the process of adding the links of key OSGeo
resources in GODAN and other key Agriculture community websites , so
we get more outreach and impact. We need to reach out and engage with
new communities proactively.

Thank you everyone for your prompt help and advice on this.

Johan's right, I haven't heard of anyone printing OSGeo-Live DVDs for a
few years now. OSGeo-Live is either being run in a Virtual Machine or
from a USB.

(We probably should be updating our documentation to reflect this).

[OSGeoLive] QGis LTS and Python 2.7 in the OSGeoLive

2017-11-10 Thread Brian M Hamlin

hi Angelos, all

Yesterday I went through the gdal 2.2.2 transition experimental PPA,
and used a basic strategy to install parts..
from foundation upwards.. and across related groups.  I did not detect
any conflicts ..
Particularly with the otb set, and ossim, which are challenging to
package well,
and therefore may be more likely to contain bugs in packaging.

This summary is for two purposes..   one is to signal to Angelos
that someone looked at the set
The second is.. I am quite excited about a new strategy for our python
analytics here that occurred to me
while doing the QGis testing.

QGis LTS, based in python2 and qt4, in practice pulls in almost the
whole  matplotlib python set that we use.
pandas is the next CORE component that would be needed.. with that, and
a little charting support..
the whole analytics chain is there   (python-grass is there, too..
not clear on those details)

I believe that the Python2 conversation with the Numpy core team is now over..
they are high-achievers, and also have limited resources, so they have
to have a single goal ..
the new single goal for Numpy core is Python3 by 2020.  (to be in
synch between say..
Pandas 0.18 and Numpy, we may need to bump Numpy up a version or two.. TBD)

Yet I believe, thinking about all the parts, that a solid analytics for
geospatial, using the existing Python2 stack,
is great value for users, and should be actively maintained for years to come.
Managing that in a respectful way, that allows all the parties to do
what they do best.. is the art here..

I look forward to the gdal 2.2.2 transition packaging to become
widely available, in Debian and UbuntuGIS.
And, I look forward to a new approach to the maintenance of the very
valuable Python 2.7 stack with Matplotlib,
Cartopy, Pandas and others ..

Re: [Live-demo] Name inconsisetnecies

2017-11-03 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi Vicky -  you are right, these are not cleaned up.. they were
created at different times in the history of the project.
--
live-demo   comes from the very early roots, when the OSGeo hackers
and the Arramagong project joined

Live GIS disk or disc   is a generic name. The wikipedia article on
that topic shows six other projects like this one.

OSGeo-Live  has the hyphen, and is this project, but I believe we
decided that the hyphen is more trouble than it is worth.
The hyphen is a written, human convention that tries to be good
grammer. In the age of Internet, it is better to remove the hyphen
because not all search and database systems carry to along as expected.

osgeolive   is a primitive, simplistic tag, for the most primitve
communications systems.. like IRC

the remaining two, OSGeo Live  and  OSGeoLive  are both flawed, but
are the closest to the real project,
today.

--

moving forward, I believe that this project will split, by decision
or simply in fact.
The Debian repository is not run by OSGeo, and is named with Debian
conventions.
The Ubuntu repository may or may not be run by OSGeo, and is a backport
of the shipping Live, in practice.

The new OSGeo web site should link directly to the docs, making the
docs their own project alone.

The remaining  "Live Demo" continues, but the form factor, method to
try and deliver to users, and other
components are ripe for invention at this time.

formal names for each of these things are needed, in my opinion.

[Live-demo] Docker, docker-compose and IPython

2017-09-16 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi All -

As people may know, OSGeo-Live is using IPython 5.x series, the
so-called LTS version of IPython. While work continues
to stabilize and improve the Python 3x platform, Python 2.7 works every
day, as it has for a long while.

I am very interested to see a reproducible case where Docker and
Docker-compose installation is conflicting with IPython.

Personally, I feel these two (Docker & IPython) are both high-priority .. so
any
conflicts ought to be straightened out..

[Live-demo] OSGeo-Live Mission and Future - was BOF

2017-08-04 Thread Brian M Hamlin

HI Jody, All -

In the past with OSGeo-Live, I have described the Mission Statement
in three parts:

Reference Install ;  Showcase for Projects  ;  well-chosen (curated) examples

WIth the release of Live 11 and the massive advance in Debian
packaging, I believe the future is not one project.
This can be seen as "evolution" .. it is natural for a large and mature
project to split ..

Website ;  Server Edition  ;  Desktop Linux
-
with the new OSGeo web site development.. somehow I realized that the
docs from OSGeo-Live should be the same docs in the new OSGeo web site.
Rebuilding docs is too much work, and too many parts, to duplicate. Instead,
build once and deploy in several contexts.
-

credit to Angelos Tzotsos and Debian Developer Sebastian Couwenburg
The "server edition" of OSGeo-Live is simply UbuntuGIS PPA,
with DebianGIS aka pkg-grass as the "upstream" in many cases..
-
that leaves "desktop Linux" Ubuntu.. what remains of the OSGeo-Live.
Critically speaking, it has been twenty years (or more) that I have
been active,

of promises of "desktop Linux" .. in fact, Windows and phones have spread,
with some percentage of Mac OSX from Apple in various demographic groups.
Web browsing is constant, phone use is constant and climbing, and .. no
desktop
revolution with Linux of any kind.  OSGeo-Live right now, is basically
desktop Linux.
-
Another note on Ubuntu.. as people likely know, the number one cloud
VM instance
is Ubuntu.. and last I heard, Google uses an Ubuntu fork for much
within its cloud walls.
The "server edition" of OSGeo-Live is.. Ubuntu packaging.. this bodes well..
-

I am interested in participating in a BOF, but from my point of view, I
think we should

consider the OSGeo-Live 11 as somewhat an "end of an era" .. and move forward
with eyes open to new, productive avenues for valuable efforts.

Hi Marketing Committee,
Vicky has suggested a great improvement for our OSGeo-Live jump page,
putting an OSGeo logo next to OSGeo applications. Example here:

https://cvvergara.github.io/osgeolive/add-logo-left/en/overview/overview.html
I'm suggesting we should be distinguishing between OSGeo graduated
projects (use existing full logo) and community projects, (use a
smaller logo, which just has the central compass and not the outer
ring.)

https://github.com/camerons/OSGeoLive-doc/blob/logo/images/logos/OSGeo_compass.png

https://github.com/camerons/OSGeoLive-doc/blob/logo/images/logos/OSGeo_compass_small.png
Any comments from the committee on such a variation on the logo?

[Live-demo] Space on DIsk - was GMT

2017-07-11 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Space on Disk :

there are several important decisions pending..
Interested participants may find a detailed disk-space accounting as
part of the build process..
Please see the build logs for some build, preferably post-Beta1 so we
can discuss.

Second, we will have at least 8GB on a USB medium for upcoming events.
The 4GB space limit comes from a file size the represents the stored
file system.
In some cases, this SquashFS file is not a limitation.
Therefore, extra care ought to be taken to differentiate where a 4GB
limit matters..

GMT size is an issue in OSGeo-Live.

gmt depends on gmt-gshhg & gmt-dcw to be truely useful (but are only
Recommends due to their size), but gmt-dcw is not included due to disk

So I would like to propose to keep the previous OSGeo-Live logo for our

Re: [Live-demo] openhub.net stats

2017-07-06 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Hi Jody -
thanks very much for your careful efforts ..

The utility of having a single "source of truth" for lines of code,
activity and some language profile, has slightly outweighed the
undesirable dynamic of a FOSS dot-org requiring a third-party service
constantly to understand its own projects.   Personally, I feel OSGeo
should have this ability in-house, along with other methods, and not
rely so heavily on this one metric site. Certain project's measurements
are horribly wrong to this day, and inevitably carry bias of varying
kinds.

I have removed the old repositories, making the project appear younger

16GB, 32GB or more.

in part because Ubuntu 1604 base, and excellent tech from many groups.

Enclosed is a terminal log from starting OpenJUMP 1.11 in a VM
Please check this for any surprises.. thanks in advance

Maybe. I'm afraid I'm a land surveyor and I don't know much about
graphics. Just the basics I get when I learned GIS.Seems that EPS, can
contains both vector and raster data so I should be able to use it in
the Gimp or inkskape.

I would like to avoid aliasing as more as i can.

Is there a new color chart coming with the new branding ? How did you
produce those documents ?

The page 14 in 006_Branding_sketch seems to be a nice start for a wallpaper.

It would also be good to coordinate updating the osgeo live
logo; Nicolas I have an EPS copy of the logo if that can help?
It is unclear to me if the graphics designed is handling sub-brands
like OSGeo live, or if it is something we are expected to do once we
have the logo / font / color choices in hand.

Taking up from a conversation with Cameron.
Over on the marketing committee mailing list we are redoing the
branding for OSGeo. The designer is going through and creating the
templates and collateral now in order to refine the visual ideas for a
style guide.

For context:
- Website and Branding May Update
- osgeo-logo.png
- color and font

Anything we can do to roll out this new branding would be both timely
and appreciated. Cameron is a member of both the marketing committee
and osgeo live and should be able to help with any coordination.

  TL;DR
I am hesitant to recommend building Boot USBs at this time..
It will take at least one test printing before committing to a run, if

We can print USBs, probably a majority of people who receive them will
be able to boot a laptop,

others will need to use an ISO in Virtual Box or similar. FYI
-
The USB Sticks format is not the same animal as the DVD was..
We made many DVDs and handed them out, over several versions.. the

process was reliable,
the options clear and the pricing competitive,,  We screen printed the
DVDs, bought commodity covers,
and the product could be built in a timely way by one of several vendors..

The USB Sticks are not the same..   We have not made many runs of them..

Technically, I am finding that there are at least two challenges..
One is the UEFI-Boot and signed kernel,

and that would be the same for a DVD format.. but the Second is .. that
many hardware platforms now seem
to be treating USB boot as a vector for attack.. The user may have to
choose at the BOOT BIOS level
to allow the booting, and even then it is not clear to me that all the
details on boot are being made public.
Low-cost windows laptops and also very expensive server motherboards
seem to both be behaving this way.

The Live has implemented a proces that should allow the UEFI-Boot
with a signed kernel to work.. but it is hard
to get right.. the DVD in later versions suffered from this also..

Dear Jody,
thanks a lot for your answer.

I have contacted a french company that provide usb stick printing.
Their proposal is like this: for 300 USB sticks it will cost almost
2000 € when for 400 the cost will go to 2600€.

Nevertheless, I am now wondering. Indeed, from what I can remember,
during the FOSS4G in Bonn there was an OSGeo Booth that was providing
the OSGeoLiveDVD USB sticks. This may be the best option. Indeed, in
case OSGeo is coming to the FOSS4G-Europe with OSGeoLive USB sticks, it
means that we may be able to manage the usb print on our own budget as
it may cost less (as the usb stick size will decrease and the file to
put on the usb stick will be easier to setup, there is no double
partition anymore and so on, still I think that lower than 8go usb
stick won’t be a real use to anybody).

I think that it would be just perfect if OSGeo can have a booth at the
FOSS4G-Europe 2017 for distributing the OSGeoLive USB stick.

To proceed we would need to get a better idea of costs involved. I know
you have a hard cap on attendees of 400 - how many sticks would you be
printing and do you have a quote we can work from?

Are we sharing this cost with the LOC? OSGeo live is bootable so it
cannot really be used to easily give people a copy of the event program
(unless you make a partition I guess).

I would like to considers USB sticks as part of our expense in
attending the event - while they are a good tool they are only one of
the tools available.

[Live-demo] ipython upgrade via conda

2017-05-28 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Python 2.7 upgrade via Anaconda distribution
28May17 -dbb
=

The Anaconda Python install solution is widely used and respected for
Scientific Python.
In the pre11 Live VM, I am looking around and taking notes..

* there is a minimal bootstrap shell script, which does not require the
entire set of packages to be stored locally.
The README does encourage the user to get the entire setup locally,
like some other install solutions on Mac

and Linux, however it is not required.  miniconda [0]

* there is an advertisement for "conda cloud" as well as the license
agreements.. and also at least two opaque
binary blobs in the install script. However, there is also an MD5
checksum and script linecount clearly documented,
so the security is adequate in my opinion. It is a third party product
and the relationship would have to be with
that third party, as far as content and license..

* there is a minimal set of bootstrap packages, with versions .. this
is useful!  we should get in synch with this ! [1]

* the install is per-user by default.. NOT in the system python areas..
  PREFIX=$HOME/miniconda2

* installed miniconda2 for Python 2.7 64bit, transcript excerpts below  [2]

* cartopy is not available with this setup.. therefor IRIS is not
possible either

Hi Ben -

I was reviewing some old emails regarding Unidata THREDDs server and
OSGeo-Live for netCDF and others, and I noticed that in a reply, you
say :

(as I know GeoServer much better than THREDDS)

This is great to read today.. perhaps I can let go of the idea
that Unidata THREDDs is important for the OSGeo-Live project. We never
got real attention, although there was some interest from Unidata
people..

I got pretty far even on a LUbuntu Live VM, with git manually installed,
as an experiment. I will make a proper VM. I stuck with 16.04 as you
advised, not 16.04.1. I was able to use the script to install GeoServer
2.8.3 and the INSPIRE and CSS extensions. I think an upgrade to 2.10.x
is in order. I will need to check that we can use OpenJDK 8.

I plan to join next week's IRC meeting. I have been following the

worked in Australia, and I am probably closer to him in distance and
time zones in New Zealand than when I worked in Perth!

Kind regards,

Hi Ben -

thanks for the reply, great to hear you are interested in GEOSERVER

Source code for the Live build system is dual-hosted on Github.com
and git.osgeo.org/gogs

https://git.osgeo.org/gogs/osgeo/OSGeoLive

The approach I use is :

clone the git repo

make a VM with -unpatched- LUbuntu 1604

clone -your- git repo of the live, make a working branch, in the VM
once it is booted

run a few of the startup scripts (save time, ask a lot of questions here !)

In particular, I focus on python and netCDF, PostGIS / Postges, and
some others. So I just run the install scripts that are needed for
that.. a few blemishes are left because the SETDOWN finish does some
housekeepping, but basically that is good and works.. they are
well-behaved installers...

There are a few conventions about setting up the USER assets, just
data in a certain directory .. its not at all obscure. Again, please
save time ans ask lots of questions

We can set up a modern GEOSERVER and get to adding some stores and
layers and styles. I personally have done a few CSS styles, but fall
back to SLD when in a hurry. My current GEOSERVER is 2.7x, so there
are certainly things I dont know

We are focused on "Reference install; carefully chosen examples;
Showcase apps"

Definitely speak up on the list .. and also I can help you get
started at your convenience..

Hello all,

I know I haven't been helping as I should regarding documentation and our
migration from Transifex, but we've managed to translate all of the strings
for pt-br.

We just tried to download the compiled PDF and access the HTML, but it's
not there.

We are getting 404's for all other languages. Examples:

* http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-es.html";>http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-es.html
* http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-br.html";>http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-br.html
* http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-ja.html";>http://postgis.net/docs/manual-dev/postgis-ja.html

The process of building the docs is disabled for foreign languages?

How can we help?

George

thanks.. but no need. if you look inside those, you'll see that the logic for a
new version is already outsourced to our sf.net files space where we host a
osgeo.conf and the files itself
  https://sourceforge.net/projects/jump-pilot/files/OpenJUMP/osgeo/

testing the changes would be appreciated though ;)

[Live-demo] UEFI Notes Misc

I am not a reader of this

I tried such a usb drive on a
MacBook which I was told was UEFI

I got grub menu, it started
loading the kernel. After a few score
lines of boot-up output
messages it hangs, "loading nouveau.fb"
presumably that is a problem
in the iso.

 Hi All

this line of build steps looks promising .. my own small investigations into
the UEFI boot process raised more questions than answers, so I am grateful to
see a new set of resources applied to the problem.

Specifically, I had not seen nor heard of, GNU xorriso, and I had not gone
through Ticket #1761 in detail.

great news, and I will make time to test a bit soon

Re: [Live-demo] Python 2 and 3 in the field today

2016-11-11 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Here at UC Berkeley, it seems that far more people use the Anaconda
distribution system, than any Debian python packaging. The Mac OS is perhaps
more than fifty percentof serious science users, by casual observation, and
the pain and dysfunction of the Windows ecosystem continues to drive many
decisions about packages. Python programming is meant to be portable, and it
is. That is a substantial portion of the benefitof choosing python.I do not
believe that the Debian python packaging policies have much effect on
scientific programmers here, whichever OS they use. --Brian

It only going to see more adoption now that Ubuntu has switched the
default Python to 3.x since xenial.

The Debian Python Policy also documents the use of Python 3 for programs
when they support it, and recommend to not package them for Python 2.
Libraries should always be packaged for Python 3, and when applications
only support Python 2 should the library be packaged for Python 2 as well.

 https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/python-policy/ch-python3.html

With QGIS 3 switching to Python 3, adoption in the geospatial ecosystem
will be pushed forward too.

Kind Regards,

Bas

We will be running into our usual problem of having major decision

issue for us in the Southern Hemisphere because it is our long summer

help much.

One thing I suggest we consider is whether we decide to drop back to 1
release per year. OSGeo-Live is more stable than it used to be, and I
question the return-on-effort we gain by putting out 2 releases per year.

Warm regards, Cameron.

2016-09-26 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Hi All -

first of all, congratulations on this release. So fast, my head is spinning
..

Now, on to the details.. . I see some functions in the pdf manual, marked

  Availability 2.3.0  Requires GEOS >= 3.6.0

GEOS is at 3.6 now ?!?

Some of you may know that OSGeo-Live is closely related to DebianGIS packaging,
The packaging chain is certainly not even close to using GEOS 3.6 now..

https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-grass/geos.git/

More info on GEOS 3.6, please.

[Live-demo] OSM, Kosmtik, node-mapnik

2016-07-10 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi -

  catching up on FOSSGIS video..
In this presentation [0], Phillip Beelman tells us that he worked at Geofabrik
for more than a year
(a center of the OSM universe) .. Phillip is using a tech-stack in his demo of
Kosmtik, NodeJS and node-mapnik.

For the OSGeo-Live.. on the one side, there is little NodeJS software within
OSGeo (some OL3 harness only)
yet, there is clearly a development direction in some groups of using a nodeJS
backend as core dev environment
(javascript driven on both client and server)

In the IRC log, sebastic says the Debian packaging NodeJS setup was not
affected by the Node repo meltdown.

Angelos, Hamish, Alex, Brian,
Would you do us the honour of accepting a position on the first official
OSGeo-Live PSC?

Once the first PSC has been established, we would like to invite in people
who would like to help coordinate OSGeo-Live, who also have a track record
contributing to the project. Our aim is to be inclusive in selection of the
PSC. As per our PSC page [2], these are the expectations of PSC members:

* Regularly contribute to OSGeo-Live or related activities
* Help with whatever dirty work is required to keep the project moving
forward
* Monitor OSGeo-Live conversations, either in weekly IRC meetings, or on the
email list, and contribute constructively where appropriate
* Vote promptly (within days) to motions being raised

Hi Angelos,
I agree. I've tweaked the wording such that a -1 vote from the community
results in referring to the PSC. I've left the PSC vote to be based on
majority votes. I'm anticipating that the PSC will have already been
involved in the community voting, and referring to the PSC will be rare.

I propose that the second round should be a majority vote.

I'm hoping to tweak wording, select the first PSC, and formalise adoption at

Re: [Live-demo] Update GeoMoose to 2.9.0

2016-05-23 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Hi Jim -

several parts to this: workflow is now in 'git' .. currently,
primarily at Github.com,
so an update to a script is a "pull request". git workflow has several
possibilities, but a reliable pattern is ...

Clone the Master Repo
   - clone the master repository to your own repository somewhere

New Branch
   - make a new git branch for your feature, give it a descriptive name
   - ensure you are editing on that branch..the "current branch" is
your new feature branch...

Edit and Commit
   - make the changes as you see fit; commit those changes
   - make sure the changes are visible on the network ..
if you had a local repo push branch to YOUR CLONE of the project

Make a Pull Request
   - make a "pull request" to the master git repo from your net-visible repo
   - Github.com has a simple interface to this, but it is optional to
use those features
   - if you have new binary resources, make those visible on the net somewhere

Changes are Reviewed
   - a full build is executed using a named branch, so the revision
can be built for testing.
   - if things look good, the named branch is merged to master, and
the feature branch is deleted

Debian Packaging:
there is an ambitious and detailed effort to bring much of the
software stack
into Debian Packaging... at a minimum, Debian GIS
https://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/
a.k.a.   pkg-grass  gets dot-deb files with their source descriptions
dot-dsc into their workflow.

At the UbuntuGIS PPA level, there are also packages, mostly and largely
based on Debian GIS,
but not the exact same content. Please *do* consult with the Debian
packagers on this list and elsewhere
on their preferred methods !

We aim to reduce disk space by having all applications make use of a

Each OSGeo-Live application requires a Project Overview available

In past releases, we have included Windows and Mac installers for some

Windows and/or Mac installers? Yes, this is feasible given the very

Package dsc files are generated so changing them makes no sense. You can
discuss changes to the netcdf source packages on the debian-gis list [0]

Define "trace".

If you're looking for the interdependencies I would parse the Packages
files from the PPA and analyse the Depends fields of the packages in
question.

Because I have coordinated the recent netcdf transitions, I have a
pretty good idea of the dependency chain.

netcdf-c (netcdf source package) is at the bottom, everything else
depends on that. netcdf-cxx-legacy, netcdf-cxx, netcdf-fortran &
netcdf4-python all require the netcdf package to build. netcdf in turn
requires hdf5 to build.

To help prepare transitions, I run a transition tracker [2] using the
ben package [3] also used for Debian [4] & Ubuntu [5]. ben visualizes
the reverse dependencies for packages and marks them as good or bad
based on the regular expressions applied to the fields in the Packages
files (usually just Depends).

Hi Sebastic, TL;DR summary --

How can I check the versions of the netCDF stack as things progress ?
Where can I make a pull-request for a trivial change to a package .dsc ?

-details-
So, we have several areas of new content, now with DebianGIS (aka pkg-grass)
getting updated,
and the ubuntugis-testing PPA content ..   I see

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-grass-devel/2016-April/045994.html

which tells me that Unidata python-netcdf4 is very current.. nice... I can see
the originals

  https://github.com/Unidata/netcdf4-python/tree/v1.2.4rel

but reading netcdf-c issues, I see there there is an hdf5 lib that is
independent

  https://github.com/Unidata/netcdf-c/issues/233        ##-   hdf5 1.8.9 or
1.8.12

So, two questions in general:

What is a good way to trace UbuntuGIS - testing PPA versions for
python-netcdf4 -> netcdf-c -> lib hdf5
(there are several, how would *you* do it )  for our next dev-cycle..

Where is a convenient place to file an update ticket :
"netCDF4 project home page has moved from code.google.com to
github.com/Unidata; update source description"

dsc content:
  stable_dsc | python-netcdf4_1.1.0-0~trusty1 | Homepage          |

[Live-demo] Java, FOSS and OSGeo Live

2016-05-05 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi All -

today in planet.debian.net, the Debian Java Packaging Team posted an
interesting status update for all things Java [0]

Java brings an opportunity and a challenge for OSGeo-Live, at least.  The
relationship of Java [1], a "write-once,
run anywhere" development environment, with its libraries, toolchains and
licensing, to the Debian Project
ecosystem [2] , and then to OSGeo-Live, is not entirely straightforward. Yet,
some of the biggest tech on the net
is implemented in Java, and increasingly so..

An opportuntiy for OSGeo-Live Java is be a reference install, a
widely-accessible showcase and constructively
curated repetoire of current, relevent geospatial tech.   How can that evolve ?

A challenge for OSGeo-Live, at least, is to bridge the legal and organizational
gap between the Debian / Apache
roots of OSGeo.org, and the reality of burgeoning industry, licensing and
community relationships within
the active Java world. Companies and people have put their efforts into the
Java platform, and that effort is
non-trivial and often commercially protected. How can the OSGeo-Live, a
reference install of FOSS software,
respectfully and meaningfully showcase commercially protected software
alongside Libre libraries and apps,
given fundmental conflicts behind-the-scenes on a number of levels ?

It is the promise of any vital platform to find answers in vigorous
conversation, and in delivery of excellent tech.
There is no one answer, and it is up to the communities in question to take an
active role in determing the
future.

The next release of OSGeo-Live is months away, so there is time to work out the
details. However, the time is now
to understand and engage the large and perhaps growing distance between the
FOSS Libre software world, and
the commercial directions of the Java platform in all of its manifestations.
Several individual contributors have done
a lot to make Java on the OSGeo-Live what it is now, and I predict it will take
more insight, implementation and
ingenuity to make the next release not medicore, but great.

  best regards from Berkeley, California

  Hi Massimo,
I also agree that a review process is in order. I'd actually extend to
suggest that a development process should be described as well, and that
we should align with existing OSGeo-Live documentation processes.

Ie, we should be able to find Notebook processes linked from here:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Disc#Documentation

I also think that we should describe the processes in the OSGeo-Live
wiki (which uses media wiki) rather than a git wiki. This is to ensure
consistency with the rest of OSGeo-Live. Although I'm open to being
convinced otherwise if there are strong advantages to using a git wiki.

I'd suggest following a similar style to the Quickstart guide:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Add_Project#Application_Quick_Start
For example, create a template Notebook, with comments, that someone
else can follow to create a new Quickstart.

I see our weak point from an OSGeo-Live project's point of view is
sourcing a person or people willing to provide detailed review of the
Notebooks.
In particular, it is a significant time sink reviewing documentation to
ensure it has well formed, concise English, at the standard of a
technical text book. (This is the standard we have been targeting so
far, and I believe Notebooks should also be required to meet this standard).
I'd guess that about 60% of time of creating a good notebook would be in
writing code, 40% in describing it.

Massimo, for context, your docs are quite good, but I'd estimate that
they would be ~ 10% to 20% of your effort would be required to review
the docs to our current standards. Reviewing the English in your
Quickstart took me 3 to 4 hours, and that didn't include running any of
the steps.

Sourcing someone with good English writing skills to write Notebooks
will help the review process a lot.

Cheers, Cameron

I agreed in “hiding” the jupyter notebook, and so the GSoC work,
from this release of the Live,
in favor of a transparent public commitment to review the efforts done.

IMHO the spreadsheet approach we use for project review doesn’t
apply very well in this context.
To facilitate keeping track of the review and facilitate potential
new contributors,
I propose to open a motion in accepting the use of github
checklist+issue tracker to keep track of the review process.

I started this page, which should help in making this possible:

https://github.com/epifanio/OSGeoLive-Notebooks/wiki/Notebook-review > >

We can improve it making it more clear, but should give you the idea.

This motion is to validate the work done during GSoC, which is:

“Development of educational material in the form of interactive notebooks”

and to help the coordination between potential contributors for this
specific topic.

Here it is my +1

Massimo.

[Live-demo] What, no Github ?

2016-02-09 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi All -

You may know, I strongly object to using Github.com as the repository for the
MASTER copy of an OSGeo.org project. So, I did some research, and installed my
own git server.. in greek the name is Καλλιθέα (Kallithéa) [0]  It works very
well - it has many of the "swap branch and compare" features that GitHub.com
has.. and .. it is federated project management, not Software-as-a-Service
(SaaS) from a commercial company.

So, while making changes to OSGeo Live [1] 9.5 beta .. I will make "pull
requests" from my own git instance, to the list. Just one problem.. security..
I am still learning how to secure this new server setup.. Temporarily, I have
exchanged  SERVER:PORT information privately with the build-master, Angelos.
Now his git "knows" the address of my git.. Pull requests from me are assumed
to be from current MASTER branch.. (oh, also I need to setup the https)

  git pull http://SERVER:PORT/osgeolive_athens  BRANCH

today, the branch was    rasdaman_log_quiet     ## a patch to get the
configure/make/make install output out of our master build logs..

I am sure people will continue to use Github.com to make pull requests, but
with some setup, you too can use a distributed, federated model of Open Source

decide for yourselves.

I converted IPython Notebooks to the current format in a named branch.
This email is notification of the pending change, and after review, a merge.

Please take a look.. how did you review the changes?
How will comments/suggestions be recorded ?

After this test (and the IPython install stabilizes) we will start new
content.

Re: [Live-demo] Postgis questions

2016-01-23 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Hi Pieter --

oh, ok.. thats new to me..
according to the PostGIS docs page..
   http://postgis.net/docs/postgis_gdal_enabled_drivers.html

those variables can be set at all levels..
  cluster-wide -> postgresql.conf
  database-persistant ->  ALTER DATABASE ...
database-temp, psql session temp  ->  set

also apparently SHELL with bash-style environment vars, as in .bashrc

I would think that all gdal drivers would be enabled by default, and
that really you
need  raster out_db set...  so I look here
    http://postgis.net/docs/postgis_enable_outdb_rasters.html

make sense ?

I did it previously in my .bashrc, but for some reason its not working now.

Hi Gabriele,
Great to hear from you and interest in seeing NASA WorldWind on OSGeo-Live.

The first step in including a project is to send an email to this list
addressing the questions linked from:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Disc#How_to_add_a_project_to_OSGeoLive

This helps us determine whether a project is a good fit for OSGeo-Live,
and also consider any logistical issues which we might face (such as if
there is enough space).

I'm looking forward to working with you further on this.

Warm regards,

Cameron (one of the OSGeo-Live coordinators)

Re: [Live-demo] Postgres 9.5 on Live 9.0

2016-01-05 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi All -

without listing Pg 9.5 details right away, lets think strategically.. two
points:

* OSGeo Live is pre-built and solid, not bleeding edge.. so stable is valued
over newest release..

* for application-layer interop, JSON handling in Postgres is a Very Important
Feature

What is we could get the best JSON features from Pg 9.5, in Pg 9.4 from
package ?  so..
There is an extension to Postgres that is a native "backport" of JSON
features from 9.5, in 9.4 [0]
I suggest we add the JSONBX extension to Pg 9.4 and leave the packaging of 9.5
alone "at this time"

[Live-demo] THREDDS - was build process

2015-12-02 Thread Brian M Hamlin

Hi Sean, Ethan, all

The Docker model is somewhat orthoganal to the aims and
implementation of the OSGeo-Live.
We are not *against* Docker, its just different.  For example, a
Docker model works well to spawn
hundreds of servers that may be short-lived, and have identical install
footprints.  I understand
that due to the popularity and some commerical investment, the Docker
model is being spread
further to include demo installs of heavier apps, in an easily
reproducible way ..

Meanwhile, the OSGeo-Live is intended to be a stand-alone boot, that
will work *without a
network connection* at all.. this is important in a few scenarios, like
a secure physical environment,
training and education, the third-world, and in-the-field use, to name
a few.. The Live is intended
to be a fully-functioning, stand-alone Live disk which works on
mid-level and legacy PC hardware.
This also makes it well suited to being a 32bit VM, but that is a
side-effect. Docker is intended
for on-demand, server-side installs and as a side-effect, amakes
installation easy on a laptop
for a demo .. etc

I am not in the Docker community, so if I misundestand, or miss
something important here,
please speak up !

Lastly, I think i can say we are super-interested in the THREDDS
server showing something on
the Live. We are first-off an end-user disk, so its not clear what
level of detail is appropriate.
But there are plenty of possibilities, and it is *definitely* in line
with the mission here.

My key question is whether THREDDS wishes to be included on OSGeo-Live?
http://live.osgeo.org
It is an excellent outreach and marketing tool for Open Source

of course from our website.

We are right now kicking off the process for our next release (see

THREDDS project has not stalled and is indeed still active. Our latest

4.6.3, and was released on 31 August 2015.

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/blogs/news/entry/netcdf-java-library-and-tds

We are approaching our next release, and hope to have it out by the end
of the year (v4.6.4). Note that most of our active development has been
on v5.0, which includes a major rewrite and extension to the way
gridded datasets are handled in general. This release will also
included the latest version of ncWMS (a.k.a. edal-java). We hope to
have a beta available sometime in December.

While the original lead developer, John Caron, is no longer with
Unidata, the THREDDS team is quite strong, and Unidata has doubled down
on its commitment to the THREDDS stack - no worries of this project
becoming abandonware.

Regarding including RStudio, from your description, it sounds like it

The process for adding a new project is described here:

Further to that description, I'd be interested to hear advise on
whether RStudio should be included as a separate application to R, or
whether the R Project Overview and Quickstart should be extended to
also cover RStudio.

requesting RStudio as a program but it seems to have disappeared. Any
ideas what happened to that email? Should I raise this issue again?

Thanks,

Robin

Dear list members,

I'd like to suggest the inclusion of RStudio in OSGeo Live:
https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/

I've just tested 9.0 Beta and it works! (screenshot attached).

There are things we can do to make it more user friendly, crucial for
its uptake as a teaching resource.

One of those things is the addition of RStudio which makes life s
much easier for people using R.
(I have more more ideas but will keep them to myself for now - RStudio
would be the priority.)

Any comments? Happy to try adding it via GH if people with experience
point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Robin

[Live-demo] Packages postgres plus

2015-07-20 Thread Brian M Hamlin
I noticed the following today.. but also, it raises the question of, where does
this bug report belong?
the failure lines at end are related to a binary size comparison of expected
and actual ?
the request that triggered this was for five package installs
postgresql/postgis  (see inline)

A while back we were considering writing up a project overview for
Sextante on OSGeo-Live. However, it appears we never got around to it.

Since then, Sextante has become available from within other
applications, such as QGIS and SAGA, and I'm not aware of it being
used as a front end application?

As such, I'm proposing that we (I) decide to stop tracking Sextante
in its own right, as people will find its features through other
projects.

Any comments?

We should not mention it as a stand-alone application.

And I would like to add information about the upcoming 9.0 release.

Thinks I would like to mention for 9.0 version:
* will be released at FOSS4G in Seoul, Korea in September 2015.
* we moved to github
* 64 bit will be available
* new Software?
* .. anything else

I would like to ask you whether there are other thinks worth mentioning.

[Live-demo] python 2 and 3 in the next five years

2015-04-16 Thread Brian M Hamlin
Hi Paul -

I read with interest your recent email (got a high rating in hacker news
today)

  https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2015/04/msg5.html

I think you have gone too far with the "cheerleading" when you say Python 2 is
"old, broken and deprecated" ... on the contrary, python 2.7 and its ecosystem
is outperforming plenty of other language and development stacks out there, has
a very well-understood development model and a *ton* of very useful libraries..

the OSGeo-Live is a linux setup based on Debian/Ubuntu ..

  http://live.osgeo.org

we are grateful to the Debian project, and have been very satisfied with our
own progress in the last five years or so, being based on Debian/Ubuntu.  We
present code that makes and uses maps.. some of that code is dense and some of
it obscure, however, the quality is very very good. We take a point of view
generally that old does not mean broken by default.

Please think twice when you throw out hyperbole.. I understand there is an
interest in the next python language and its stack. but that does not mean the
existing one is broken .. quite the opposite..

  best regards from Berkeley, California
