Re: [Liveaboard] Trailer for a keel boat

2012-05-21 Thread Vernon Densler
OK so my wife figured out what kind of boat it is. It has to be a Kittiwake
23. It needs a lot of work but the hull is in good condition. I have my
eye on some potential trailers that could be modified.

Subject: [Liveaboard] Trailer for a keel boat

I have someone giving me what is supposed to be a 1968 Cape Dory 23. I
can't find any mention of that boat on the internet so I am not sure if the
make is right or not. Anyway, it needs some work, but I thought it might
make a cool family project and might be a way to let my older kids get out
on the water.

Since I am having to deal with the damage to my other boat I don't have a
ton of money to spend on a trailer and keel boat trailers are hard to find.
Any suggestions on modifying a powerboat trailer to hold this boat.

[Liveaboard] Whatever Floats Your Boat :)

2012-05-19 Thread Vernon Densler
Well We got the boat floating again and temporary plugs over the holes. The
good thing is that both of the pilings were actually wood and Sam's step son
was able to cut them out under the water. She is moved to a safer location
with the damaged hull close to shore so we can try to jack the hull up out
of the water so it can dry and be repaired. Going to go back tomorrow and
hose out the hull with fresh water to try to limit the damage from the salt
water. Then we will bleach the hull.

Hopefully the worst part of the ordeal is over.

Re: [Liveaboard] Hull breach and about 2 feet of water in my boat.

2012-05-02 Thread Vernon Densler
So not a good day at all. Got the 3" pump and managed to pump the hull out
enough to see not only the last thing I expected but the last thing I wanted
to see. There is a 4" concrete piling skewering my hull. I was able to
slow the water down enough that the sump pump is keeping it almost empty.
While we were working on the boat we felt a crunch. I thought it was
shifting on the piling and it turns out that there is another piling now
piercing the hull just in front of my board case. I was told the slip was
shallow when the water was down but was not told that there was all kinds of
debris with pointy ends sticking out of the mud. The piling in the back is
in the inside of the port hull and the one in the middle towards the front
is on the outside of the port hull.

The marina owner finally showed up at 4:00 and we put a section of PVC drain
pipe under it to try to keep it from going down much more.

He is saying now that he is going to jack the port hull out of the water and
build cradle to hold the hull so we can repair the holes. Then when the
water comes up high enough to float her out without ripping the hull on the
spikes we will get her out of there. Hopefully he does this soon so that I
don't get any more damage.

Wondering if the stern locker is full from the skeg breaking off and if the
water looked like it wasn't going down because it was coming from there as I
pumped it out. I guess I will find out soon. 2" pump should almost be
enough to pump the whole river out.

Good stuff. On the MKII there is really no areas of egress for water in the
stern, no through hull fittings and motor/s are outboard. Only thing is the
skeg which is bolted through the hull which wouldn't be enough that big
pumps couldn't handle.

The tarp is probably the best idea as it would seem to be a hull problem.
Having said that the hulls are glass and thick from back when glass was
cheap and weight was not a big issue.

on the outlet possible. Means use as big a hose as the pump will take and
rout it for the shortest distance and lowest lift. It sounds like the lift
out the companion way over the side would be about 6'-8'; anything to reduce
that will improve pumping. The intake also can be a problem, trying as it
does to eat anything it can reach.
> If the pump you mention (16xx gph) works close to spec, it dumps close to
25 gpm; but that's under optimal conditions w/no head. Did the output look
something like that? That's one 5gal bucket every 12sec so it wouldn't take
but a few secs to see if it's anything close. If pump is not putting out
water to spec, a lot of your figuring and planning is based on false
assumptions and _that_ never helps anything.
>
> Assuming the pump you have is working my best thought: 1) Run all pumps
full, monitor to optimize and make sure everything is doing the job you want
it to. 2) Use the plastic or tarp to search for the leak; it sounds like the
rudder, prop shaft (missing), aft through-hull, engine exhaust are the most
likely suspects. If you know the sizes you might pick up some conical plugs
to suit; West will take them back if unused. If you can get a big tarp under
most of the after section in such a way that you can secure it topsides so
it stays in place, you might be able dry out on a temporary basis using only
the one pump in a deep well; probably won't work if your bottom has lots of
barnacles.

check a piece for bend-ability before planning on it.

We like Westland Marina which is adjacent to the Titusville City Marina.
It's a great DIY yard -- very laid back with very few rules and, yet,
everyone behaves like adults. The staff is great and the community of
boaters is very friendly and helpful. They do require a vacuum if you are
sanding but that's about it. Haulouts are very reasonable and, yes, you can
live aboard while you work. Also, there is a West Marine just a few blocks

Re: [Liveaboard] Sewing

2011-07-08 Thread Vernon Densler
They make zigzag attachments for some machines. From what I have been
reading 2 rows of very long straight stitch would be about the same as a
zigzag when it comes to fabric strength. Most covers and things are
straight stitch. One thing I read said that straight stitch was actually
better for sails because less of the thread is out in the sun. Since my
repair is on the sacrificial cover and since the Nicchi I just got doesn't
have zigzag (thought they all did until I got the manual for the machine and
it doesn't have zigzag) I think I am going to try the double straight
stitch. I have no doubt that this thing will sew through the material
though. It went through 6 layers of upholstery material with the needle
that was in it. I have seen pictures on Ebay of it going through thick
leather. Going to try to put Dacron tape on either side of the fabric and
sew it right into the sail. Hopefully it will last until the whole sail
needs to be replaced.

[Liveaboard] Sewing

2011-07-06 Thread Vernon Densler
My cover on my roller furling jib started to unstitch from the sail.
Besides getting a very expensive industrial machine, what would the best
used machine be for this kind of work? An old solid metal Singer comes to
mind. Will something like that work? What do I need to look for to make
sure I get the right one?

Ok and to be even more clear. A floating dock should never be underway
unless there is something really wrong with your marina. Also this law only
applies if the state doesn't have a law that supersedes that law. I think
that if they are in an air tight container they don't need the life jacket
either but we would have to ask Norm about that one :)

So, to be clear (sorry)

2002 FEDERAL LIFE JACKET RULE
The United States Coast Guard's Life Jacket Rule for Children went into
effect December 23, 2002. In support of the ongoing efforts of the states
and Coast Guard to improve boating safety, the Coast Guard is requiring that
all children under 13 years of age wear Coast Guard approved life jackets,
while aboard recreational vessels underway, except when the children are
below decks or in an enclosed cabin.

Re: [Liveaboard] Visiting Guest Policies

2011-05-11 Thread Vernon Densler

Per Coast Guard regs, children under the age of 12? *must* wear approved
flotation devices *at all times* onboard your vessel. And
*you* are responsible for enforcing this. Not the parents.

I have seen this enforced on *floating docks* at a marina because the
floating portion of a dock is considered a *vessel*

So my kids that are under 12 have to wear approve flotation devices when
they are sleeping on the boat in the marina? I don't think so.

Actually the Coast Guard doesn't regulate them at all, it's up to the states
to set the policies. In Florida in a vessel over 26' they don't have to
have one. Since my boat is 30' they don't ever have to wear one. Since the
floating dock I am tied to is more than 30' long they don't need one to walk
to the bathroom at the marina either.

And as far as my visiting guest policy goes, all guest must bring quality
beer and all female guests between the ages of 18 and 60 who are under
150lbs must wear bikinis. The captain at his discretion, may ask the guest
to cover their entire body if the area exposed makes him want to vomit.
Besides that have fun on the boat, that is what is there for.

That is the opposite of what I heard. I heard on a lot of printers if you
leave them on the heat causes the ink to dry out. How would leaving it on
keep it from drying out? Unless it purges the ink every so often. Again
that Kodaks are really good.

Exactly. However, one like mine, Brother MFC-255CW, requires that you leave
it on all the time or the ink cart will dry out. Not a good use of power -
and a good think to know if you are thinking of buying one.

2011-03-21 Thread Vernon Densler
I have to second that. I love my Kodak all in one. The transformer is a
separate power brick like a laptop and is 36v at 60w for the output. So it
might be possible to run it from a 12v source with the proper transformer.
I would imagine that the non all in one version doesn't need anywhere close
to the 60w that this needs. I am sure most of that is the scanner bulb.

For the least expensive ink costs, Kodak is very hard to beat. And their

You might be able to make do with just replacing the plugs/sockets at the
ends. A lot of the plugs/sockets don't even requrie you to be all that
handy with a soldering iron to fit them to a cable.

Interesting comment - I've been receiving the "new" list posts without
problems and more importantly without the posts going into the spam box.

Should I change the address in my software?

VERN - this brings up another thought - as long as we've got a new address,
when you have a chance, why don't you post the "list inquiry" address, the
"join the list" instructions, etc I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets
approached on the water or elsewhere and am asked how to subscribe, etc

[Liveaboard] Archives

2010-06-29 Thread Vernon Densler
Does anyone use the archives that are on mail-archives.com or just the ones
that are on my server? Because the domain has changed I don't know if I can
get the mail-archives.com to switch over or if I will have to create a new
mail-archive.com archive for the new domain. If no one is using it I won't
bother to do anything. If it is getting used I will spend the time to see
what I can do to continue it with the new domain or create the new archive.

Thanks,

Vern

[Liveaboard] List

2010-06-29 Thread Vernon Densler
The reason the list has been quiet is that it's been down. The reason it
was down was because the domain expired. Merrill had donated the domain and
I didn't have any control over it.

So I registered a new domain which is liveaboardonline.com. I am still
checking things and doing some work on the web side of the list but it looks
like the email part is now working on the new domain.

I am not sure what is going to happen with the archives yet so I have to
check those out.

Thanks,

Vern
