Interesting question about reviving LUAU, James.

I attended LUAU meetings back when they were held in the Manoa

realize that the way we seek information and collaborate has changed
completely.

Most of the LUAU list subscribers are probably very good at finding the
info they need about new stuff. We tend to be the ones who furnish answers
and solutions to our clients, and are used to googling info, supporting our
users/clients via remote control, and managing servers that we've never
even touched. We don't need the physical meetings as much, and we tend to
interact with other Linux users on an international scale, rather than in
our own town.

Having monthly LUAU meetings could be interesting, but I'm not really
sure how many people would show up on a regular basis. We've all become
too good at working in the virtual world. :)

across the UH system. I have "tech support" people that want to help

Your advice is of course correct, this is the first place they should

they go when offical support has been taken over by the enemy?

Aloha Guys...

I was in LUAU in the days when Jeff and Warren were and we had

after-work traffic buildup in Honolulu contributed to the fade out of
the live meetings. It would be interesting to have a revival meeting

My involvement is in networking and FreeBSD Unix mostly and help is from

[LUAU] Help needed with Omega Zip

2012-06-24 Thread Al Plant

Aloha,

I need to get an old parallel Omega Zip drive to work on a freeBSD 8.*
to transfer some archives to new media.

I have a problem with getting the OS to read the Omega Zip drive so it
can be seen in dmesg to manually set the id correctly in /etc/fstab
Flash drives and floppies show up but not Parallel Omegas. My wifes MS
machine has no parallel input and my several FreeBSD boxes do but wont
find the hardware. I used to use Omega Zip under FreeBSD 4.11. Thought
these had been transferred years ago but they were only found recently.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Yes, I'm running several sites via conventional web hosting. A few
of my sites were originally hosted by Cedant, which was a very competent

Deluxe for Business, which seems to be clueless about a great number of
things. Out of frustration with hosting companies, I'm thinking of just
setting up my own box.

Rackspace's virtual boxes are insanely cheap and offer reliably good
performance. Assuming I don't find anything better locally, I'll
probably provision a Rackspace virtual server.

If you have a gateway that does NAT, you are shielded from most of the network

However, I see most malware through compromised sites and ads, via the web
these days.

I'll second Jon's suggestion of FireFox/NoScript for tech savvy folks. For
others, start with an ad blocker and Chrome if Win7/IE8 doesn't seem to be
doing the trick.

My best suggestion is to have 1 PC that has no network access or is only used

That is sort of what I have now. I want to make the wlan use DHCP to
hook onto these 2 laptops. By creating a vlan on the NetGear wireless
router like 192.168.1.100 /192.168.120 for instance.

I'm not sure of the way to do it on the NetGear wireless router. which
has 192.168.1.1 as its address on the wired lan

If so then it should be pingable from the server. Did something change

It appears that what Brian said is in fact true. I quote,

I think this case is closed, and we all know a bit more about IPv6. I

[LUAU] Ubuntu Progress on HP Mini

Thanks to your help all I have remaining to setup besides the auto
config for wireless if I leave my own wireless net is Printing. Cups is
on this box and I have a network printer that has an IP address that is
used by all the other desktops on the lan. I want to know if I put a
printcap file for lpr to work on the lan printer. I set up cups with the
helper GUI but the cue fills but has no way of finding the assigned IP
of the printer.
Ubuntu says the default is the BSD printcap file format. This is how my

Aloha Al

Given your depth and experience with FreeBSD and the terminal, you may
find yourself comfortable with the /usr/share/doc/{relevant
documents}. The Debian/Ubuntu realm have good documentation for
configuring various behaviors within /etc/network/. The wpasupplicant
files have good information for profiles.

I know just what you are dealing with. The GUI tool has the ability
to set a profile, but it never really worked well for me. This is
kind of a weak area right now, and it's partly why WICD is becoming so
popular.

The way I handled your situation for years on my old orange ibook
running debian was to create a few /etc/network/interfaces files.
Then I ran a basic script like iamhome, iamatwork, iamatuh, to load
the appropriate configurations for my interfaces. For you, this will
work fine.

Aloha Scott,

Mahalo for pointing me in the right direction.
I was able to lock the network admin settings into manual mode and that
worked. I was able to put both wlan and eth0 into the network/interfaces
file and can usr the ifup and ifdown to use either. I also made backup
files of the settings in the directory too.

You have any thoughts on how I can get a cafe link to not override every
thing if I wanted to use the netbook at a Starbucks or other place with
wifi? I'm afraid that the auto config over writes the networks file if
you use it.

[LUAU] Ubuntu Networking

2009-06-22 Thread Al Plant

Aloha Gurus,

I run FreeBSD servers and desktops and now I have an HP Mini 1000
netbook with Ubuntu OS.

I have setup the /etc/network/interfaces :

The manual connection works OK for my ATM circuit wired network, now I
want to set a second network config for my LAN wireless.
Any body on Luau had experience with a wired network link. I want to set
it up manually so I dont lose the wired settings for when I am on the
ATM circuit. Using the helper apps on the Netbook is not an option as it
doesnt seem to play nice with more than one config.
I am trying to set up the wireless so I can use either it or the wired
link, obviously not both. With out losing either configuration.

Also I want to know if it can be setup to work in a Starbucks
configuration with DHCP again with out losing the existing configs.

Aloha,

I have found that loud fans are usually cheap or faulty. If the fan that
is loud is in the powersupply you can expect it to not last long.

Try running the fan outside of the case and see if it makes the same noise.

You can try to glue felt to the sides of the case. It deadens the noise
if the case itself shakes or vibrates. I have done this to several
units that sit under workers desks.

Re: [LUAU] Ubuntu LoCo

2008-03-07 Thread Al Plant

Jim Thompson wrote:

Dear LUAU,

Beware the politician who offers one thing while taking another.

I'd like to make an attempt at illumination of the "backstory" here.

I've grown concerned about HOSEF's "dual mission", and its increasing
self-conflict within the organization. Specifically, I think the
focus on "eWaste" and recycling is now in-conflict with the "Open
Source Education" activity defined by HOSEF's name.

I'd like HOSEF to be more about "education and advocacy" of Free and
Open Source in Hawaii, to that end, I've expended some personal
resource in that mater. For example, many of you are perhaps unaware
that I personally paid for Richard Stallman's flight here last year.
(rms stayed with Scott because he *didn't want* to stay in a hotel.)
I also arranged for Barton George and Dave Roberts to attend, though
their employer(s) paid their way. I further paid to fly the group to
Kamuela, put them up in a hotel, (over rms's objections), and arranged
for them to present to folks there. While many in the audience were
from the astronomy community in Kamuela, one father/son drove in from
Kona, and other folks drove in from Hilo.

I received no remuneration from any party for this, I was just "happy
to do it".

I've been working on another list of people, including Jordan Hubbard
who runs Apple's "unix development group", (and before that ran the
FreeBSD project), who was actually born in Honolulu, and others, for a
encore. Rather than a "big event", run in the pursuit of profit, with
admission and a large venue, I'm more in-favor of smaller, one-day
events, hosted someplace like UH.

I have good contacts in the industry (a side effect form having been
in "unix" since 1980), so I think I can be successful collaborating
with others (of you, especially) to do this again and again. I'd also
like to help organize more "tech days", not unlike the one that Matt
organized around MythTV. Many of you have good contacts and good
ideas as well. Tellingly, we've not done much, because there has
been a 'friction' between LUAU and HOSEF that I've been unable to
heal, or even mitigate. Tellingly, I'm interesting in the
'tinkering' aspects of FOSS, and now I'm about to move into a place
where I might actually be able to do it.

Scott thinks I'm attacking him because I want to change HOSEF. I'm
not attacking Scott, but I can understand that he's upset about his
"life's work" (to quote John Edwards) of eWaste being separated from
an organization that both he and many other's see as "his". In the
minds of (far) too many, HOSEF *is* Scott, and herein lies the issue.

I see real dangers of a 501(c)3 (like HOSEF) intertwined with both
political campaigns (Scott's, his former employers, his former/future
political opponents).

I see real dangers of a 501(c)3 that begins to attach large revenue
streams, such as could be realized by HOSEF becoming an "eWaste"
recycler.

I've hear now from too many people that they'd be interested in HOSEF,
without the "recycled computers in schools" aspect.

And, to be blunt, I see real dangers of an organization that is, by
all appearances, the corporate identity of one man.

So, with these things in-mind, I'd like HOSEF to change its mission to
concentrate on "education and advocacy" of Open Source *in* Hawaii,
run with much more involvement from the community. The alternative
is to abandon HOSEF, but I don't think thats quite as good an outcome.

So, with you the community in-mind, I'd like to hear from you on this
matter, preferably on-list, but I'll take private comments (and keep
them private) on this matter.

Aloha Jim and all HOSEF and old LUAU members,

I cant see the point in letting some company trash old computers that
could have an open source os on them and reused for schools or boys and
girls clubs etc. That goes against Open source. It smells of M$ to me.

Some people in elected office must have a brother in law in the recycle
business ... this is Hawaii.

I have known Scott for many years and he has always been supportive of
the open source community education and anti establishment. Unless he's
changed his stripes he should be in favor education and of retired
computers going to the open source movement not the trash.

If there are two streams of thought then we should consider two separate
organizations. Maybe even two lists.

You might consider starting with a basic configuration from the
dovecot wiki before enabling various optional bits:

http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotServerInstallations/FreeBSD/6.0RELEASE/20Users

The example uses pam, but if that does not work, try pointing

If you are using actual system users, stay away from UW imap and
stick with dovecot.

The server box has ssh and I can get onto it with the password

account passwd for the account?

It assumes you have pam. I am not sure if the FreeBSD port for
dovecot patches the default configuration to account for this.

Or do I have to enable ssl to use the ssh passwrd system which
is encrypted? I just left ssl off to run unencrypted for

SSH and SSL do not interoperate. See the following link for a
less terse explanation:

http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1818

This was my problem from the beginning not being able to

created an err message that says why. I don't know how to fix
this. Havent found a how to.

/etc/mail/local-host-names file.
I added the IPs of the sending boxes into the /etc/mail/access file and
put OK on the domain I am using on the box.

I have gone over all the How to's and README files I could find.

Any Ideas appreciated

Re: [LUAU] Slow internet response with different nameservers

testing more than 3-4 seconds. Sometime even no response.

When there are multiple dns servers, it is up to the dns client to
decide how/where to send the queries. Some would send to the first
one, wait for response, if no response then send to the second one.
Other clients would send queries to all servers at the same time and
use the first response. Others use round robin to choose which one to
send query first. Without doing some research, I suspect linux always
uses the first dns server which has the lowest response time in this
case. Windows clients probably query all servers and get the response
from the fastest server.

Even if this is the case, what is causing the slowness? Windows and
Mac systems don't seem to suffer from the problem. Is it a problem
with the way the nameservers are configured? or is it a problem with
Linux or Ubuntu? I think if people who try to use Linux with RR
experience this problem, they will probably blame Linux. HOSEF is
planning to distribute desktop machines to people. It wouldn't be good
if everyone who used RR ran into this problem. so what would be the
best way to fix it before the user runs into it?

I just read where a misconfigured DNS server at an ISP can cause the
delay. Could this be the case here if it's only the rr connected folos
are affected?

I tried a test using a FreeBSD box:

if you run:
dig soa rr.com | more
you see a total dns response time of 154 ms from our noc.

dig soa lava.net | more
you see a total dns response time of 34 ms from our noc.

If this is any indication the rr slowness of response looks like there
end and not from your OS on the local box.

You left out the virtual hosts part of your config, but my magic

I think you confused SSL with SSH. There is extra complexity to
the configuration when you host multiple SSL-enabled sites on a

Aloha Gurus,

Does any one have experience with Free Radius? We have installed it and
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] uning PW: xyz123 works ( It was setup by another
person) but, when I add for example [EMAIL PROTECTED] PW: dog, into the
users file it wont connect. Dials and makes an attempt but drops the
connection.
I have cheched the How to's and FAQ's. I have rebooted the server. I
have checked the Clients listings and the 2 IP's are ok. ( Or I don't
think the test name would work.)

Am I missing adding something to another file for each additional user?
Any suggestions?

Julian,

Here is a summary of what people were talking about.

Before HOSEF was created, before Luau, there was MPLUG. Mid-Pacific Linux
Users Group. MPLUG was started by Warren Togumi before he went on to bigger
and better things. It was a bunch of Linux enthusiasts that would get
together once a month can talk shop, learn from each other, and build cool
stuff.

It seems like everything the Linux community does is run by HOSEF. People
want to have an autonomous LUAU back. HOSEF is geared toward bringing Linux
to the OSS neophytes, LUAU is for newbies-gurus & everywhere in between,
business owners, solution providers etc. Of course there is some cross
over.

There was also talk of having a annual conference as a fundraser to
highlight OSS in the community - j/k

You should come next build, you can ask the 'old-timers' - people over 30
about the good old days.

Matt,

I believe LUAU was created way back before I started to go there to the
meetings in the 1990's when it was held at the UH Innovation Center.
Gary Sublett got me interested, but he has since moved back to Kentucky.
I see him answer on line occasionally so he may be able to give more of
a time line history.

There has always be an up and down pull in interest for LUAU and the
name was maintained for a mailing list identity.

I am glad to see you guys are doing some installs and learning sessions
again. Excellent work!

[LUAU] Bios won't see hd.

My friend has a Dell Precision 420 with bios A-07. He wants to load DOS
in a 2.x gig drive and use this box to replace an old 486 SX box he has
with a program he needs for his business on it.
I looked at it and tried to get a 2.X gig drive to be recognized but
this Pentium 3 800 mz Dell box won't find it and the user bios settings
won't stick above a 1000 MB drive.
Anyone know if a bios upgrade would fix this or is there a trick to
force it to see the drive?

I had a similar problem trying to get a Dell Lap top to take a bigger HD

2005-09-19 Thread Al Plant
Has anybody on the Luau List got one of the 1.0 GB flash drives to work
on FreeBSD 4* , 5* or 6*?

I have one I would like to use for data back up, but I cant find the
etc/fstab setup on the FreeBSD website to get info to install it.

Any one know if it just uses the USB device name like ( usb0 ) and what
ever File System you want to use on the device?

I had a similar problem with a Debian Sarge Box I built.
I edited the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file

#/usr/bin/gdm

and in /boot/grub/menu.1st
I added
init=/sbin/init3
This is used because Debian runlevels 2-5 are the same by default.

Then I could run the Gnome manager from the command line.

I don't know SUSE, but you can probably do something similar to get

I have a similar ftp LAN setup in my office.

4. 1 M$ box. (not Mine)

I use Igloo and GFTP as the ftp programs.
All boxes and any users on them, can ftp between each other since I gave

use anonomus logins. Even the M$ box works with the IP assignments. (You
can set a FreeBSD box to receive anonomus logins if you wanted to from

Hi Jon,

The feed is screwed up. There is a known issue with HP laserjet 1100. I
see it on their website. Several sheets are fed at once. The paper
holder is vertical and the lifter wears and eventually picks up several
sheets or even cards at a time.

This is driving me nuts. The printer is a 1999 model and has been well
used.

I am looking at a HP 5650 Parallel port installed printer. A desk jet.
For $89.00.
I think it will work on FreeBSD.

The BIOs options on the motherboard did not include the 3BC.

The zip only worked after I shut off the motherboard BIOs and then
reselected the settings that worked. It was ok after I rebooted the box.

Thanks Gary,

The BIOs setting was the fault.

I cleared it by disabling the BIOs internal motherboard settings and
installing a printer card that I set to run at IRQ 7 - 0278 .
This brought up the zip drive with no problem.

Then I removed the card and reset the internal motherboard back to IRQ 7
and 0378.
This brought up the zip drive with no problem. I did set the BIOs to EPP
as you suggested.

[luau] FreeBSD zip drive install

2004-01-21 Thread al plant
 Configuring a zip drive.

I have a FreeBSD 4.4 box that works fine with Zip drives. I have another
4.4 that I can't get to configure the /zip drive.

I am now building the box using 4.9 and can't get the zip drive to
work on it either.
snd module installs and works fine BTW on all three boxes.

The error messages I get are /dev/da0s4 Device not configured.
and trying to unload the kernel module to reload it gives the same
message.

da0* shows up under /dev

when you cd /dev

Is there another way to assure that the detection is being made?

I see an error under dmesg now:

vpo0
vpo0 EPP mode
(seems OK.)

BUT:

vpo0: VPO error/time out (5)

shows just before the last line of the dmesg file.

Any idea what I should be looking for?

I am doing this vpo install from old notes and I can't figure out
what's causing the configuration failure.
I also tried entering /etc/fstab parameters same as the other box that
works.

/dev/da0s4 /zip msdos rw,noauto 0 0

This IS the problem.

The 3 da0 entries that show up on the 4.4 box dmesg that works do not
show up on the other 2 boxes.

da0 at vpo0 bus0 target6 lun0
da0 : (iomega zip)
da0 : 96mb

Any of you FreeBSD guys know how to cure this?

Thanks for the tips.

I tried 2 IP addresses in the TCP/IP settings and it came up finally.

The other Win 98 boxes on the lan don't have to have a real IP in there
to come up and surf the internet from inside my network.

Very Strange.

Reinstalling the TCP/IP is the first thing I did.

I have an IP listed on the router that is on the DSL to the net at the
ISP.
The other boxes on the lan seem to work ok with out any individual
setting.

Yes. If I put the errant box on my lan where seven boxes including 2 win
98 it still wont resolve the websites by name.

[luau] Network problem

2003-06-29 Thread al plant
Any body have this problem with Windows 98?

I have my friends Windows 98 box which runs behind a Linux/unix firewall
router. It stopped resolving the IP addresses to the domain names on
this box.
The Netscape nor Explorer will not recognize the names. I cant ping from
this box by name either, but using the IP address I can ping ok.
Anybody know what resolves the name to the IP in Windows 98 that could
be
not set or screwed up?

Thanks.
