[Lubuntu-desktop] precise artwork

2012-01-27 Thread
Hi, people:

I have updated the artwork (again). I REALLY recommend you to replace
your Ozone3 theme with this one (a lot of improvements solve several
bugs). Also, the wallpaper is ready (after a selection process). Again
no option for colour (sorry) for us and Xubuntu devs (also Kubuntu are
"slaved" to its plasmoid style) due to "Canonical restrictions".

If you feel better, the new artwork package will include all previous
Lubuntu themes and some walls by the Flickr community. Check out:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Precise/Ozone

As always, feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Roadmap for 12.04

2012-01-14 Thread
Well, I'm working on it. At the first time I was adapting an already
made theme, but now the theme has been totally reworked from scratch.
The intention is being really clear and sharp, with the contrast and
simplicity in mind. You can check it out (not downloads yet) here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Precise/Ozone

The GTK2 part is almost complete (two controls remining). The GTK3 is
half-done.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Fwd: Derivatives using the LightDM GTK+ greeter

It could be nice if Lubuntu uses its own greeter, like KDM does,
focusing on Lubuntu-ish themeing and speed. If you're going to plan to
port it to GTK3 it should be nice testing this one.

No, it's not. I've found a good repo from Martin Wimpress, his "Desktop

We could copy that packages, since "official" repos hasn't compiled even
for Oneiric. But they must be compiled / built for Precise. Here it is:

So we could re-think about droping off the Netbook interface. It could

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Use xcompmgr in Lubuntu

2011-09-18 Thread
We did. But using xcompmgr is complicated and can fail. There's a big
problem using some apps with it. Try to drag an icon from a window to
the desktop and you'll see the flickering. If you do this too many times
the Openbox will crash. This is a xcompmgr bug, and its development
seems to be stopped.

And for using a composite manager we need a nice front-end for
configuring it. It's very difficult for newcomers open a terminal and
type commands. This is "too geek" :)

Most people wants all the work done. Just install the system and
start to browse the web, write an e-mail and two or three more
things. No complications and no effort looking for programs. Believe
me, there're plenty people like this. That's why most of them use
Windows, not for applications, but finding them is so easy and don't
want to change.

And I think giving a complete operating system like Lubuntu is a
good idea. Anyway is a great iniciative for other kind of users.

Ok, my fault, and not understanding. I thought you were talking

Sorry.

PCMan, I'm agree with Chow Loong Jin. Could PCManFM use gtk values
in toolbar and sidepane? Is it difficult to implement? Anyway, it's
your design, and I'm agree with the space issue. Most old computers
(which Lubuntu is dedicated for) doesn't have big screen sizes.

I have no problem with it. Check this out. Open gconf-editor and go
to /desktop/gnome/interface, look for a key called toolbar_style.
You can have four posible values: both, both-horiz, icons, and
text.  Try to change here. Have a PCManFM window opened near
gconf-editor to see the changes. If nothing happens, please, tell me
again, but test it first with another theme (open LXAppearance and
select Clearlooks, for example).

[Lubuntu-desktop] artwork updated

2010-06-26 Thread · Rafael Laguna
Hi again, boys and girls:

I've updated (again and again, don't care, it's my job) the artwork "for
testing purposes only":

  * The GTK theme now is based on last Clearlooks engine, that
does't use GDK, it's Cairo based, even more spedd than using
Murrina engine. It was a request from a few users, they told me
not to use too many engines (Aurora, Murrine, etc) to keep
Lubuntu simple and fast.
  * The wallpaper is now just a variation from the 10.04 one,
according (fully agree) with the "classic" Lubuntu style.
  * The Openbox theme has been polished a bit (and GTK theme matches
aswell).
  * ...more and amazing changes to come! :)

Please, feel free to test and comment / criticize your suggestions.

Thank you all.

Oh my god, 111 days only!!! :D

Not for artwork. I muust complete all of it in a month and, the worst
part, you all must accept (almost a part of you). About the buttons,
they will be on the right side. I put it on the left because I LIKE
IT! :) And I'm a Mac user, so I preffer. But we must not go on the same
discussion (Ubuntu paid it a lot, and it's really stupid). Look, a
frined of mine asked for a theme with buttons IN THE MIDDLE! There's
people for everything.

Yes, GTK themes goes into ~/.themes folder for a normal user. In the
Lubuntu installation it will go in other place (/usr/share/themes/) and
will be compatible with ObConf and even Gnome. I have it working
correctly in both environments, but it's not finished. I will update it
again and again until it works fine in every system so, please, be
patient. I'm doing my best with my time :-S

Ha, ha. Yes, you're right, but don't translate with Google, it does very
funny (note: Ralph = Raphael = God's healing, from hebrew, and Laguna,
not Lake, it's a bit smaller :D ).

Well, I have no started with new marketing because artwork is not
confirmed and adapted to packages. But if you need a specific banner I
can do the modification, but using the 10.04 style. Tell me the message
(and number of text lines) and the size and I'll do it (wass 600 x100
px?).

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] marketing

2010-06-06 Thread · Rafael Laguna
I'm working in a theme (mockup only for now). The marketing items, such
as banners, sticks, and other things, will derivate from the main
aesthetic line and, remember, this "a bit like a democracy", so you'd
may not vote for my next theme proposal. This week I have pllaned to
publish the first designs: panel background, menu button, gtk2 theme
(now made by me, Clearlooks was not accepted for everybody, too
"vintage") and wallpapers.

Independent of this, you can mail me here (or my personal address) about
your needs in banner's sizes and messages. So, I'm waiting your
suggestions. That you pointed is taked now (banner at 600 x 100 px).

Thank you.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] print problem

2010-05-23 Thread · Rafael Laguna
I'm not sure, but I was like you when Lucid arrived. I have a Brother
multifunction. Since the removing of HAL the drivers were unable to find
correctly the printer, and the solution came directly from Brother.
Check it out if Canon has released a new set of drivers, and I mean a
DEB package, and notes recommending modifying some files. In my case I
needed to edit

/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

...and put this:

# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Now, "90-local.rules" is no longer a valid file to point USB
multifunction devices, and I don't know why.

Of course, this text is valid for Brother and OKI printer scanners.
Yours may be different, and sure you've checked this.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu application discussion for maverick

2010-05-14 Thread · Rafael Laguna
Fully agree, but we must consider not to make the same errors than Puppy
and its derivatives. It has a bunch of UGLY applications and a hard way
to configure a few things. You cannot add drivers (like HP Scanners or
Brother printers). We're in the right way, but we need, obviously, to
improve our "product", getting simple and fast.

Brasero was my first choice, I noticed my LG re-writer doesn't work with
XFBurn. And I think we must eliminate both, Gnome and XFCE,
dependencies, because we must remember we're using LXDE desktop, so
XFCE-Task must be replaced for LXTask. And etcetera.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] colour scheme

2010-03-13 Thread
About the palette I had "formal instructions" from Canonical, due to
patent issues. It seems that Lubuntu name was registered by "the
Company" and, in prevission of these kind of things (even when Kubuntu
wasn't released), they published a hard graphical guide about "possible
derivatives". They didn't know that Ubuntu "exploded", a few months
after with customized distros.

But if we want to keep in the family, and not being an "orphan" distro,
we have to keep their recommendations. But the additional artwork items
are another things. You can put a green wallpaper, or purple, or even
black, while keeping design lines and respect to the original artwork
(Lubuntu is a derivative from Ubuntu, and its artwork is a derivative
too).

And sorry, yes, we're in Artwork Freeze as well as Feature Freeze
status. The popularity about a theme was made through the mailing lists,
extracted from the Lubuntu Artwork Wiki pages. If anyone doesn't trust
me or Julien Lavergne (and others) about the decission, I can make a
list with names and their votes, received in my inbox. Anyway, the poll
is (now, at the end):

Dark blue / Light blue: 15 votes

Light blue / Lime green: 9 votes

2010-03-05 Thread
That's another thing I miss, by now. I haven't the truetype font. It's
redrawn (correctly retouched). I think the font is a variation of the
Phoenica TTF. If anyone has it I'll apreciate sending via mail. That
will make me work better :)!

[Lubuntu-desktop] new logo

2010-03-05 Thread
It's not definitive, but look at Xubuntu new logo:

The new line consists on a typographic part ("ubuntu", "xubuntu" or
whatever) and a sign part, with the embedded logo of the desktop, in
this case the XFCE mouse. We cannot put the circle with the bird logo.
Only main edition (Ubuntu with Gnome desktop) can do it. But for legal
reasons, they can't (or doesn't want to) put the Gnome footprint logo. I
don't know the Kubuntu one will be.

I don't publuish the SVG source because it's not legal yet. When art
discussions will finish I'll do, for keeping the standards.

Regards,
Rafael Laguna.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] new visual identity in lucid

2010-03-05 Thread
Thanks a lot, PCMan, but if we do a different style not according with
them we will be like PC/OS, yes, Ubuntu based, but different, and with
an order from Canonical to remove all logos and not being an Ubuntu
family anymore.

Don't WORRY ;-) , I'll just change the logo, the global look won't
change.

As you say, Jo, we just can accept the new design. And I'll do my best
to match Lubuntu's look onto new branding specs.

Yes, we're working on it. Canonical official anouncement was released
yesterd and surprised a lot. So Lubuntu really is an Ubuntu family
product we need to match the visual elements according to some
corporative recommendations under the graphic design manuals.

I'm in contact with branding people, waiting for colour and other
graphic specifications. Don't care, Lubuntu will be released according
Canonical's normatives.

Another thing I'd remove is the command install suggestions from the
bash. I think it's an standalone package and freezes CPU a lot.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] GVFS issues and other bugs in pcmanfm2

2010-02-27 Thread
Thanks for your words, making artwork is very difficult, so seeing the
people happy with it is a good compensation!

I'd like to ask PCMan about remote filesystems. Will PCManFm have
support for FTP natively? Or will we need additional tools like Gigolo?

[Lubuntu-desktop] multiple colour combinations

2010-02-18 Thread
The trick is the combination. I thought there wasn't to make an icon and
GTK theme for matching every colour, and I recommended using Shiki
Colors themes to match. So, if you like the pink / purple wallpaper
combine it with Shiki Noble; you want green, combine with Shiki Wise;
etc. Also, Lubuntu distro includes the whole Openbox Themes package, so
it's not difficult to find one hat combines well with the colour
overall.

[Lubuntu-desktop] colours (a lot)

2010-02-18 Thread
That's what I was trying to say... at the wiki there're a lot of
options. LxDesign comes with 6 different colours (and a transparent menu
also). Have a look:

[Lubuntu-desktop] artwork

2010-02-15 Thread
Jo Franz, we cannot put "orbs" in the panel. Bitmaps must be aligned and
have same equal size than the panel. It's a code limitation, believe me,
I've tried every combination.

Enter the wiki
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Artwork/Incoming/Lucid/LxDesign) and
choose the app menu (I don't like the name "start menu") if it fits
better. There're darker coloured panels there, but remaining LxDesign
style (the new default theme) and a lot of stuff for your choice.

I'm glad you like (in general) my work. Of course, I know I can't
delight everybody, but here it is. :-)

[Lubuntu-desktop] browser

2010-02-01 Thread
Please, consider that a browser needs one VITAL thing: manage
certificates. Midori doesn't, Chrome does bad. Only Firefox and Arora
can do it properly, but you already know the differences between them
(size, speed, etc).

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Default Browser

2010-01-31 Thread
LOL. Discussion about browser is out of the box! :-)

OK, fully agree with Julián Alarcón and Jonay Santana. I'm only a
designer (and was a coder, but not now). Mother's impressions are good
as they are perfect beta testers.

Midori and Arora are the best browser for this release / distro. Arora
was even capable to load complex certificates accesing the tricky
goverment pages (educational ministry, for example) and not Midori. So,
equation gets simple.

We have to keep an eye on speed, easyness and also features, and Midori
lack a bit of functions that are already implemented on Arora.

If anybody wants a geek distro try compiling a minial Gentoo with that
rare fork of KDE. Lubuntu must be installable on any machine with ANY
user.

[Lubuntu-desktop] package suggestions (and missings)

2010-01-28 Thread
I've installed Lubuntu Alpha 2. Here's a list of packages I think must
be included in final distro:

cups (it cannot print!)
osd-notify
gnome-app-install
brasero (xfburn doesn't burn in some LGs)
charmap
gthumb (there's no photo manager)
mirage (light and has no dependencies)
midori (instead of firefox, so we don't use Thunderbird as well)
bittransmission-gui
gnome-mplayer (instead of smplayer, no QT libraries)
listen or audacious (insted of the ugly and difficult aqualung)
update-manager-core (but there're package conflicts)

Do you like it? I think Lubuntu, with these changes, will not increase
too much its ISO or installation size.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Artwork editing

2010-01-25 Thread
Sorry for disturbing. I've already joined the Lubuntu team, but I think
MoinMoin is not as user-friendly as I'd like. Anyway I was to trying to
include another proposal: LxDesign. It does not include openbox or icons
theme yet, but modifies the panel and systray too.

Preview: http://rafaellaguna.com/descarregues/lxde/theme_lxdesign.png
Downloadable pack:
http://rafaellaguna.com/descarregues/lxde/theme_lxdesign.tar.gz

If you like it you could consider it as an option. Thanks for your
patience.
