[LUTE] Prom 25

2015-08-01 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear Lutenists,

Just a note to say that Prom 25, performed in London and broadcast
worldwide on the BBC this [1]coming Tuesday, will be particularly
   lutey. It is a semi-staged production of Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo"
directed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with the English Baroque Soloists
and Monteverdi Choir, and no less than 4 lutists: David Miller,
Elizabeth Kenny, Josias Rodriguez and myself. Should be fun!

If you can't make the performance at the Royal Albert Hall, it will be
broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 (and telly, I think).

[LUTE] Lute for sale

2015-07-23 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear Luters,

A note to say that I am selling an 11c lute by Stephen Murphy, made in
1994. 69 cm string length, after Hoffmann (private collection in
Switzerland). The instrument has a very fine carved pegbox. I
currently have it set up as a 10c lute in E (2c single) for work with
countertenors, but my new 12c lute is arriving soon and it will cover
   the same function.

It is a great instrument with particularly fine woods on the table and
back. There was a crack (mercifully with, and not against, the grain)
on the soundboard but this has been repaired by Craig Ryder. The lute
   is currently in top condition.

   Kingham case included.

Please do contact me off list for photos and further information.

   All best wishes,

   Benjamin

Lutists all,

Many thanks for these messages, and apologies for this tardy reply: it is
festival season and I have been a busy bee. Just catching up on things now.

I have now got access to the 1536 print, so many thanks! Will have much to go
on with my new 6c lute.

Just the ticket!

[LUTE] For Sale: Stevenson Theorbo Flightcase

2015-03-25 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
Dear theorbists (in particular the North Americans who have to fly
   to every concert),

I am selling my Stevenson theorbo flightcase. Blurb is below, and do
click on the link to Wayne's site way at the bottom to see photos.

Contact me in a private message if interested.

   All best,

   BenjaminA

STEVENSON THEORBO FLIGHT CASE: state of the art flightcase for
   theorboes made by Alan Stevenson
   (A [1]http://www.stevensoncases.co.ukA ), the world-renowned maker of
flight cases for Yo Yo Ma, Berlin Philharmonic and James Bond ("The
Living Daylights"). Instrument "floats" in different densities of
high-performance foam (these are re-configurable for different theorbo
sizes). Case itself made of a patented compound of carbon, kevlar, and
other materials making it incredibly strong - essentially unbreakable -
yet flexible and light:A the material of the case is only millimeters
thick, so the case only weighs about 15 Kg, well within airline
regulations (32 Kg). It is on wheels for easy rolling. Two red-strap
theorbo "seat belts" keeping the instrument in place. There is also a
big pocket inside for strings, frets, etc., emplacements for
humidifiers and also a storage space for musical scores. New price is
A-L-3000, I will happily sell for far less. Case in Paris.

2015-03-10 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear All,

Thanks so much for your thoughts. Indeed, I may be getting a folding theorbo -
I'd prefer a Flybo to a Guitarbo any day - but I may still have to take the
stopped string length down a bit.

Shaun: yes, I would prefer a whopping huge body with fewer frets than to have a
smaller theorbo.

We'll see.

Best wishes,

[LUTE] Kingham Theorbo Cases for Sale

2015-03-01 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear Luters,

A shameless plug. I'm selling two of my theorbo cases, info below:

   [1]http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute/forsale.html

KINGHAM THEORBO CASES for sale: I have duplicate cases for two
theorboes and, due to the restraints of a small Paris flat, I have
decided to put two cases on sale:

   - 1 grey Kingham theorbo case, with the extra lightweight cloth that
they don't offer anymore (it used to cost 40% extra; this is much
lighter than the normal lightweight material they offer on their site).
Made in 2006. Perfect condition. This was made for a 19c Schelle
instrument, 88cm/165cm, and will fit even the biggest giraffes. 500
   euros

   - 1 blue theorbo Kingham case, with the normal lightweight cloth (20%
supplement). Made in 2002. Perfect condition. Made for a Klaus Jacobsen
   "special", 81cm/160cm. 500 euros

Both cases are available for view in Paris.A

[LUTE] Re: Single versus triple roses

2014-11-30 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear All,

Thanks so much for all your thoughts into the single/triple rose
conundrum. It is obviously so hard to know just how this aspect changes
the tonal colours of lutes. It is also very difficult to test just how
this one aspect alters things given that every lute is different, even
if it is the same model from the same maker.

I will continue to do some intuitive and highly unscientific tests!

   Best wishes,

   Benjamin

I fear there is a natural tendency to think of the rose as the hole
that "lets the sound out", but I think this is a case where
intuitive physics lets us down.A The size of the opening affects
the natural resonant frequency of the body, with a smaller opening
 giving a lower frequency.
But I invite all you proper physicists out there to explain why!
A more complex issue, but one which is related in that it also
involves a mismatch between intuitive physics and the real thing:
many people seem to believe that the lute soundboard should be
flexible to "allow it to vibrate", and that the more flexible it is
the better the bass response.A In fact I think - please contradict
me if I'm wrong - that the frequencies which we are interested in
are far too high to be aided by a floppy soundboard, which is more
likely to have a damping effect.A As far as I can see, a relatively
rigid soundboard is going to produce a more sustained sound.A The
most important factor is the mass, which must be kept as small as
possible so it can be activated by a small input of energy - hence
the rather thin soundboards (supported by many bars to retain
 sufficient rigidity) required by lutes.

[LUTE] For Sale: 2 Kingham Theorbo Cases

2014-08-17 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Dear All,

Apologies for this intrusion. Please contact me off list if interested.

Kind regards,
Benjamin

KINGHAM THEORBO CASES for sale: I have duplicate cases for two theorboes
and, due to the restraints of a small Paris flat, I have decided to put two
cases on sale:

- 1 grey Kingham theorbo case, with the extra lightweight cloth that they
don't offer anymore (it used to cost 40% extra; this is much lighter than
the normal lightweight material they offer on their site). Made in 2006.
Perfect condition. This was made for a 19c Schelle instrument, 88cm/165cm,
and will fit even the biggest giraffes. 800 euros obo.

- 1 blue theorbo Kingham case, with the normal lightweight cloth (20%
supplement). Made in 2002. Perfect condition. Made for a Klaus Jacobsen
"special", 81cm/160cm. 700 euros obo.

Both cases are available for view in Paris.

[LUTE] Re: Italian Theorbo: 6/8, 7/8, 8/8....

2014-08-14 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Both. Whike French theorboes tended to be single strung, only the largest
Italian ones (stopped string length near 100 cm) were single; the vast majority
of Italian theorboes (and the ones corresponding to the sizes we tend to play,
80 cm and up) almost always double. This can be seen in both surviving
instruments, historical sources and iconography. I refer you to the excellent
thesis of Lynda Sayce for an in depth review of the material and surviving
instruments.

[LUTE] 12 Course Lutes

2014-05-17 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear All,

Does anybody on this list have any experience with 12c lutes? I am
considering getting one if I can get the funds together and I would be
grateful for any counsel drawn from actual experience. I have never
even laid finger to fret on one of these lutes before, so it is a bit
of a leap of faith. That said, there is clearly so much music that
could be played in either "vieux ton" or "nouveau ton" on this lute,
and I think it is the ultimate historical continuo beast for so much
17c repertoire, in particular English music (Purcell, Lawes, etc.)

Also: string lengths. I know they can be very small (around 55cm) to
very big (perhaps 76cm or so). Any suggestions? I am kind of torn
between having perhaps a smaller solo instrument and a larger one that
   I could use for accompaniment.

   Any thoughts?

   Best wishes,

   Benjamin

[LUTE] Video of Archlute by Koch

2014-05-16 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear lute-listers,

I came across this remarkable video of Pascale Boquet playing the
lovely Koch theorbo in the CitA(c) de la musique. I had never seen this
video before and I thought I would share it with the list.

   [1]http://mediatheque.cite-musique.fr/masc/?INSTANCE=CITEMUSIQUE&URL=/M
   ediaComposite/CMFM/CMFM04800/default.htm

I must say, it is the first time I've heard an archlute. and
actually really liked it! I usually find the gap between the stopped
double courses and the open single strings rather off-putting for solo
music, but this lute has so much oomph that it really overcomes this.
Indeed, while I am not generally a big fan of archlute continuo either
   - while the background tinkling is pleasant, I have never played/heard
"real" archlutes (I am *not* speaking here of the single-strung,
reduced-size modern inventions one sees everywhere ) that could truly
match the sonority of say an Italian theorbo or a French double lute,
but this instrument is giving me food for thought.

Bravo to Pascale for her wonderful playing!

   Best wishes,

   Benjamin

[LUTE] Edlinger Lutes

2013-10-18 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear All,

I am getting a small theorbo made after Edlinger, but my lute maker
feels the model is excessively thin; she is worried about
sound/projection. I should think the sound may be less complex than
deeper lutes, but perhaps I will have more projection since less sound
will get trapped in the belly.

Does anyone have experience with Edlinger-type models? I would like to
stay as close to the original body as possible and see what happens,
but the maker has never made anything so shallow before and is getting
   slightly cold feet about it.

Any and all thoughts would be much appreciated!

In any event, it should be a dream to hold!

I have been using coloured strings on my theorboes for some years now (courtesy
of Dan Larson), and they work really wonderfully. It does make playing much
easier (even if this is mainly "psychological", if you see what I mean).

[LUTE] Re: What is the point of synthetics?

2012-10-07 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear All,

In fact, what I "thought" I normally found was that gut strings get settled in
faster, but are more prone to movement than synthetics on a day to day basis,
where synthetics can take weeks to settle down (gut minutes/hours), but once
they do they can be settled for ages. I thought (and for nylon still do think)
that all things considered one tunes around 10% more with gut strings than
synthetics (considerable, but manageable).

While I do find that the nylgut is pretty stable, as is nylon, I have had
horrible experiences with carbon strings (when touring in NYC, Roman!) which
kept on climbing in hot stage conditions (sometimes by nearly a semitone). This
was on an excellent theorbo by Klaus Jacobsen. The gut and nylon strings on the
same theorbo/conditions were vastly more stable.

On the theorbo I am currently playing (which is admittedly a rubbish instrument
by a certain French luthier who will remain anonymous) I find it is the
overwound strings that are moving around the most. As I said, I brought the
lute 'round to a good luthier, who reworked the pegs to minimise slippage, and
this had helped enormously. That said, the three overwound strings continue to
go wildly out of tune - much, much more than the nylgut, nylon, and much more
than the GUT on the same instrument with the same pegs. In this case, it must
be the metal windings that so contribute to the utter lack of stability.

I have toured in the tropics (Ile de la Reunion, a French territory in the
south Indian Ocean) with a 100% humidity index. It took several days for my
theorbo, gut strings (and myself!) to adjust, but once this happened, the
instrument was remarkably stable: at 100% humidity there was nowhere left for
the strings/instrument to move! Funnily enough, the theorbo was noticeably
heavier by several hundred grams due to the water weight.

Sam: I get my plain gut from Nick Baldock. To be honest, I am not sure if it is
varnished or not. Following historical sources, I tune my top string to just
below breaking point, and the rest a
tad lower. This means I use very high gauges (normally nothing thinner than
.46, often much thicker, for chanterelles). These tops
last weeks, if not months, with heavy playing. There is no problem in humid
conditions, as anyone who heard my concert last year at the Marin
Marais Festival in Paris can attest (aside from the normal 10% extra tuning
that gut requires over nylon).

So, I suppose what I am saying is that while nylon/nylgut are more stable than
gut (once they settle in; gut is much more stable right away) I see no
advantage with carbon or overwound strings with regards to gut when it comes to
tuning. They are at least as difficult to tune as gut, with the added
disadvantage of sounding (in my view) utterly rubbish.

My 392 cents.

Best,
Benjamin

[LUTE] What is the point of synthetics?

2012-10-05 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Luters,

I know that much has been made about tuning issues pertaining to gut strings,
but it strikes me now how little has been said about the same difficulty with
synthetics/modern strings.

For the first time in ages I am playing on a modern-strung theorbo belonging to
a student of mine for rehearsals of a "Fairy Queen" while I impatiently await
the arrival of my new "double luth" in some weeks (more on this giraffe anon).
I am simply aghast at how badly carbon strings go out of tune, even though they
are "not supposed to". (Nylon/nylgut fares better.) Indeed, the (ugh) overwound
Savarez "guitar" bass strings are the worst offenders of all, going madly out
of tune sometimes: not surprising they are so sensitive given how metal is such
a superb conducting material. The tuning got so sticky I actually took the
instrument to a lutemaker since I thought it had to be peg slippage, but no.
And of course, with all these different modern materials, the different string
types are going out if tune differently. Superb.

I just can't believe I forgot about how difficult tuning synthetics can be. But
more importantly, it leads me to question what the point of playing on
synthetics is: after all, the reason why players use them is since they are
supposed to bally well stay in tune... and I am really not so sure given my
current experience that they do this better than gut.

Thoughts?

[LUTE] Lute-Friendly Stereos

2012-06-15 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Dear Luters,

I am in the process of looking for a new stereo system. Might any of
you on the list have any suggestions in this regard? I am looking for a
proper component system, probably at around the 500 Euro mark. For this
modest budget, are there any stereos/brands that you feel work
particularly well for the lute, or for early music in general? Also,
are there good stereos that can be linked to computers for editing
   work, etc.?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated! I am a child in these matters,
having had nothing but -L-30 Argos stereos throughout my salad days

[LUTE] LUTE/THEORBO CASES for sale

2012-05-20 Thread BENJAMIN NARVEY
   Hello luters,

Just passing this on for those who may be interested:

LUTE/THEORBO CASES for sale: I have duplicate cases for various
instruments of mine (some lighter, some stronger, for varying travel
conditions) and, due to a combination conjugal pressure and the
restraints of a small Paris flat, I have decided to put the lot on
sale, sell the ones that go and keep the ones that don't. They are:

   - 1 ultra lightweight Japanese SOMA case for a huge theorbo (weighs
less than a kilo). Made in 2010. Good condition. 600 Euros obo.

   - 2 ultra lightweight Japanese SOMA lute cases, one for a Renaissance
lute, one for a rider 13c lute. Made in 2010. Perfect condition. 500
   euros each, obo.

   - 1 "sunsafe" grey Kingham case, with the extra lightweight cloth that
they don't offer anymore (it used to cost 40% extra; this is much
lighter than the normal lightweight material they offer on their site).
Made in 2006. Perfect condition. 800 euros obo.

Please get in touch at [1]luthi...@gmail.com. Cases in Paris.

[LUTE] Re: Baroque Tutor

2011-06-13 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Mark,

Why not get all the tutors available, since everyone has their own
method and ideas?

That said, I did some work on Miguel's tutor (the introduction to
French lute music) and when I got my copy of the book I was very
pleasantly surprised: it has very solid information about the lute,
it's history, its composers, it has in depth discussions of left-hand
and right-hand technique and tone production, as well as instructions
on how to do things such as change frets.

Most of all, though, Miguel did a really good job of bringing together
a huge amount of music from a wide variety of (often manuscript)
sources that are classed into three distinct and easy to use levels of
difficulty.

The tutor is really quite comprehensive and not only can it get you
started, but I thin it could keep you going for a long time.

Best,
Benjamin

[LUTE] Re: Double stringed on a theorbo?

2011-06-02 Thread Benjamin Narvey
   Dear All,
Very interesting thread. I have a very accurate reproduction of the
huge d-minor Schelle "German" theorbo from Nuernberg, and this
instrument has doubled courses on the "petit jeu". I did briefly have
it set up some years ago in this way and it sounded like a lovely and
huge baroque lute, but I do find that it projects better with single
strings. (I must admit however that I really didn't explore the
double-string set-up sufficiently and am very tempted to do so now.)
That said, with regards projection, some soloists/directors actually
prefer a vague lute "presence" in the background that doesn't get in
their way to actual "projection" (despite what they tell you to play
louder), so this is not necessarily a bad thing depending on the
situation and who is hiring you...
I think the real problem with double-stringing is the tension. Even
with light stringing, if you start doubling the courses you can be at
90Kg before you know where you are...a colleague of mine just avoided
having his theorbo implode under double stringing. This, of course,
does not mean we shouldn't be double stringing our theorboes where the
situation calls for it (early Italian monody and opera principally),
but rather simply makes me wonder about what kind of glue luthiers of
   old were using!
I should note that double stringing was, of course, primarily an
Italian phenomenon (indeed most surviving Italian theorboes were double
strung). French theorboes tended to be single strung.
   Best,
   Benjamin

Bonjour à tous,

Un petit mot pour vous dire que je fais un petit récital de luth ce dimanche
à la Cave du 38 rue de Rivoli
:

http://www.38riv.com/web/fiche_evt.php?num_evt=482&m=2011-05&page=1&total=23

Benjamin

Dear All,

Just a note to say that I'll be playing a recital this Sunday at the "Cave
du 38 rue de
Rivoli":

http://www.38riv.com/web/fiche_evt.php?num_evt=482&m=2011-05&page=1&total=23

It is a nice (and new!) programme of Gallot, Mouton, de Visée, Conradi and
Weiss, all played on three lutes all strung in gut. The sound should be
really magnificent, I think.

Hope to see some of you there!
As ever,
Benjamin

[LUTE] Re: Beef gut strings

2011-03-18 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear all,

In fact, Baroco strings here in Paris is supplied by Toro - a bit more
expensive than Toro, but they are easier to deal with in my experience
and in that of others - especially for small orders (under 250 Euros).
 See:

http://www.freewebs.com/baroco/

I have tried their beef and sheep top strings, and like them both. I
find the beef last a bit longer. They are a bit more fundamental to
my ear than the sheep, which can be good or bad depending on your
taste or the repertoire you are playing.

That said

(and this is entirely personal)

The best top strings I have come across in terms of both sound and
longevity are sheep strings by Nick Baldock in Germany - mind, I think
he does some strings in beef too, but he didn't have the gauges I
needed for beef tops last time I checked.

Toodle pip,
Benjamin

[BAROQUE-LUTE] Travelling with lutes: Air Canada... or should I say "Scare Canada"?

2010-07-16 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear All,

Thought I might share the news that the lovely 13c lute of the Acadian
lutenist Michel Cardin has made the front page in Canada, but alas not
for very happy reasons. See:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/new-brunswick/story/2010/07/08/nb-moncton-lute-fixed-air-canada-600.html#socialcomments

Most impressive are the pages and pages of people who commented on the
story (scroll down to see).

For those of you who may be interested, Stevenson Cases is now making
lute cases.  I have two.

Best,
Benjamin

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce to you a week of conferences,
masterclasses, and performance at the Royal College of Music (London)
centred around the 24 violons du roi, the most important orchestra of
the seventeenth century.  As part of the Musique de la Chambre du roi,
its distinctive five-part texture pervaded many manifestations of
musical life at the French court, such as incidental music, ballet,
and opera; as the first truly professional orchestra, it
revolutionised ensemble playing throughout the whole of Europe.  The
Centre de musique baroque de Versailles (CMBV) has recently
commissioned fourteen instruments corresponding to the hautes-contres,
tailles, and quintes of the 24 violons, with an aim to eventually
recreating the entire orchestra.  This unprecedented project is
serving to greatly broaden our understanding of so much French baroque
repertoire from both musicological and a practical points of view.
This joint event between the Royal College of Music, the Institute of
Musical Research and the CMBV - undertaken with support from Cultures
France and the French Embassy to the United Kingdom - aims to share
these instruments with British players, scholars, and audiences.

Please find below the programme.

Yours truly,
Benjamin Narvey

Versailles and the 24 Violons du Roi
21 - 25 June 2010
Royal College of Music, Prince Consort Road, London SW7 2BS

In a stunning coup for the Royal College of Music, our Historical
Performance team led by Ashley Solomon are delighted to present the
first appearance in 250 years of some very special instruments.

Founded in 1626 under Louis XIII, and directed by Lully among others,
the "King's 24 Strings" (six violins, twelve violas, six bass violins)
is often described as the world's first orchestra. Virtually all of
the original instruments have been lost. However they have now been
recreated by leading luthiers Antoine Laulhère and Giovanna Chitto.

Friday's concert presents the first performance to feature all twelve
violas and an opportunity to hear the rich inner voices that gave the
orchestra its unique sound.

Actually, it worked out all right tuning-wise: I didn't have to tune
long, only often (about 3 times).

[LUTE] A Draft Idea

2010-06-07 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Collected Wisdom,

I played a solo recital yesterday in a rather drafty medieval church
in Champagne on a lute with loaded gut basses. Tuning was difficult
but manageable, but nevertheless my experience got me wondering if
anyone out there may have any advice with regards to how one may
discern where the optimal performance place is with regards to drafts,
i.e., how does one check for drafts in a concert space?

Any advice would be most welcome!

As ever,
Benjamin

[LUTE] Music and Ideas Worldwide: A Symposium on Historical Performance

2010-03-13 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Luters,

A note to say that I'll be partaking in a live global teleconference
this Tuesday at the Royal College of Music in London, "Music and Ideas
Worldwide: A Symposium on Historical Performance", which will include
speakers from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. I'll actually be
speaking about the "24 violons du roy project" that I'm organising
between the Royal College and the Centre de Musique Baroque de
Versailles in June 2010, but there will be some proper lute fare on
the menu too: Jakob Lindberg will be discussing aspects of theorbo
arpeggiation. See:

Best wishes,
Benjamin

[LUTE] Re: What makes a lute stay in tune?

2010-01-18 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Hi Ed,

It didn't seem to like the (very rare) dry weather in England when it
was put under tension...the soundboard shrank due to the low humidity,
and this caused the glue to give way, and the string tension did the
rest

Ouch.

Just got word today that the repair is alomost done, so I'll swing
past to pick it up in early February!

Best wishes,
B

[LUTE] V & A Follow-Up: Petition

2010-01-18 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Lutenists,

My contact at the V & A thought that a petition would not prove
particularly effective in our campaign against the music gallery's
closure, and so I decided not to start one thinking that the press
option was the best way forward.  That said, I note that someone on
Facebook has started a petition independently; in only a couple of
days there are now over 1000 signatures.  See:

http://www.facebook.com/luthiste?ref=profile#/group.php?gid=257514797266&ref=mf

I have decided to add my name to this petition, and I would urge
readers of this list to do the same.  Perhaps providing the museum
Directorate with a head count would not be a bad idea after all.
Indeed, the petition (and the comments it contains) is a very powerful
sign of the opposition to this policy decision.

Very best wishes,
Benjamin

[LUTE] Re: What makes a lute stay in tune?

2010-01-18 Thread Benjamin Narvey
Dear Franz,

Both: the lighting produces incredible amounts of heat, as does the
crowd. The crowd also produces lots of humidity. Both of these
factors are normal last-minute changes to concert environments, but my
lute was more than usually unstable yesterday. In fact, I wasn't
supposed to be using it at all: it had just had surgery (re-drilled
the bridge and changed the spacing, meaning the strings were all in
different places) and all the strings were changed last week. In
particular, the loaded strings lose 0.5 Kg of tension in the first
month, so not only do they suffer the normal instability of gut, but
in this case they were particularly unstable since they were not even
finished stabilizing on the instrument yet.

The lute I was expecting to use exploded in the lute maker's workshop
before I could pick it upbut that *is* another story

Best,
B

[LUTE] Re: What makes a lute stay in tune?

2010-01-17 Thread Benjamin Narvey
In answer to the question "what makes a lute stay in tune?" I respond:

certainly *not* high-intensity lighting!

I played a concert today with my newly gut-strung 11c (using Mimmo
Peruffo's very laudable loaded bass strings) and a theorbo partially
strung with Venice diapasons. The tuning was manageable, but when the
technicians switched on the lighting just before the crowd came in -
and after I thought the lutes had stabilised to the performance
environment - I knew my work was cut out for me!

All's well that end's well

Best to all,
Benjamin

this article (and others like it) may plant the seed in the mind of the

[LUTE] Thick Gut

2009-12-25 Thread Benjamin Narvey
A very Merry Christmas to one and all!
'Tis the season to be merry, and so I'm getting new strings...and would
like to run something past this list!
I'm currently setting up a theorbo that goes down to a low F (i.e. the
lowest diapason goes down a tone below the "normal" low G) to work at a
maximum pitch of A=392 - so LOW! It would seem that the low F course
would have to be around 1.6mmand this makes me wonder: what is the
thickest gut people on this list may have experience going to/would
advise using? I've only gone as far as about 1.3mm with plain gut(I
realise this is also a question of taste and tolerance.)
I know I could use Venice, gimped, or perhaps pistoys for such a low
   course tooany thoughts?
   All best holiday wishes,

[LUTE] Re: Closure of V&A Instrument Gallery

2009-12-15 Thread Benjamin Narvey
   Dear Stephen and Sandi,
This is dreadful news - thanks very much for letting the list know
about this. I'm wondering if it may not be possible to get a petition
going that we could present to the V &A directorate, one that may make
them reconsider this decision. There are obviously several hundred of
us on this list, and if we include other lists as well (such as the AMS
list, etc.) we could probably make some impact. This collection is one
of the greatest gatherings of musical instruments in the world, and it
is certainly worth fighting to save.
What does this list think? An on line petition would probably not be
   too difficult to manage...

   Dear All,
Does anyone on this list have any experience with the lute cases of
   Japanese
maker Shigeru Soma (La Soma)? They look very good, although I'm
   not
   sure
they are hard cases. They are extremely light and well made,
 weighing
   in at
about 1-1.5 kg. See the photos below.
Just thought I'd pas this on for your information.
   All best wishes,
   Benjamin

[LUTE] Re: Japanese-made lute cases

2009-09-30 Thread Benjamin Narvey
   Hi Ed,
Indeed they are, and Takahashi is the man I've been chatting with in
   regards to these cases.
They are very light - I just hope they are safe, and perhaps even
   available.
   Best wishes,
   Benjamin

I couldn't find the link to the photos, but are those the styrofoam
cases? I think Takahashi Tsunoda may have one. He showed it to Jakob
Lindberg when he was here and Jakob commented about it being very
   light.
