Just one last word on this ;) I think it would be more convenient
to keep the
LaTeX convention with a '\listXXXname' command (with XXX being the
float name)
instead of using directly a translated name. That's because one
could want to

customize strings going to the output. As this is already possible for
\tableofcontents, \listoftables and \listoffigures (see below), one
would
appreciate to find the same logic for algorithms as well as for
custom floats.

\renewcommand{\contentsname}{Contents of this document}
\renewcommand{\listfigurename}{Figures}
\renewcommand{\listtablename}{Tables}
...

Locale strings for such commands (List of Algorithms for
'\listalgorithmname',
etc.) could then be defined in the preamble, in the same place as
new floats
definitions, and LyX could thus translate as currently (but not in
the same
place), allowing customization. It would need very few programming
as some code

is already generated where needed. What do you think of this?

I attached a patch for that. It adds some definitions for
'\listXXXname' and '\listofXXXs' in the preamble (with 'XXX' for
every non builtin float), and generates a '\listofXXXs' in place of
the '\listof{XXX}{List name}'.

I'm waiting for your comments.

It would be more urgent to fix the real problem you are experiencing.

That's because you're using a french UI.

LyX is doing the translation internally using the same mechanism that
provides translated strings in documents on screen. For example, for a
chapter, I get here Chapitre 1 in a french book. Do you get the
same?

Do you mean that to produce a french output, one should have to
compose through a french UI?? IMHO, this isn't very logic... I think
that, even if LyX could translate the UI labels (Part,
Chapter, ... but maybe not menus?) into the target language (which
isn't done by now), it shouldn't have to translate the output since
this should be done by LaTeX just as for chapters and other TOCs/
lists, etc.

I currently use the english interface. I create a book document and
setup the french language (DocumentSettingsLanguageFrench). Then,
if I add a chapter and a list of algorithms, both are displayed in
english in the UI, but only the List of algorithms is kept english
into the output (everything else is translated by babel).

I tested this on 1.4.4 and 1.5.0rc1 using the english UI. I also
tested 1.4.4 with the french UI, but then the List of algorithms is
always french into the output (even when writing an english document!).

Isn't this a bug?

I just double checked that here it outputs
\listof{algorithm}{Liste des Algorithmes}

LyX is doing the translation internally using the same mechanism that
provides translated strings in documents on screen. For example, for a
chapter, I get here "Chapitre 1" in a french book. Do you get the
same?

A small patch for List of Algorithms

2007-06-22 Thread Mael Hilléreau
The List of algorithms label cannot be customized (translated) into
the output.

1. Create a new document
2. Choose a non english language
3. Insert a list of algorithms (Insert List / TOC List of
Algorithms)

4. View the source (View View Source)

The code corresponding to the List of Algorithms inset is '\listof
{algorithm}{List of Algorithms}', which AFAIK is not customizable.

It would then be more convenient to use the command
'\listofalgorithms' instead so that one could customize it...

Since this command isn't defined by default, adding \providecommand
{\listofalgorithms}{\listof{algorithm}{List of Algorithms}} in the
preamble does the job. This definition may now be overridden by the
user, by loading 'algorithm.sty'/'algorithmic.sty', or just with a
'\renewcommand' in the preamble.

The attached patch solves the problem. Please tell me if it's
sufficient as I'm note sure if things are done in the right way...

No need to apologize. The list is terribly slow today, some messages had a
delay of more than an hour.

Ok, happy to know that it's not my fault ;)

I thought that my mails were blocked again into my local network (I
had SMTP problems since monday...).
