This is supposed always to work: Even LyX 1.0 files should open in LyX

exceptions) produce the same LaTeX output and so the same PDF.

It's even supposed to be possible to 'export' LyX 2.3 files back to the

I think this particular problem has been resolved for me by Uwe's suggestion
that I need to use the full file specification. However, I intend to take a

Actually there are quite a few programs including inkscape which put out
Tikz code for figures drawn using them. My issues are a little different. I
dont know if it is of any use but i am attaching a lyx document that I keep
with various Tikz facilities that I use which I copy into my own documents.
These are all selected from the Tikz manual. If you look at the mindmap
example for instance, it would be nice to be able to have that built into
lyx so one could just specify the variables such as the number of nodes,
subnodes, their titles, and the angle and have the mindmap appear in the
compiled document. For many people that would make this wonderful facility
very much more usable. I am personally comfortable with doing it this way
but thought it would make these tools more accessible to many others if they
could be meaningfully integrated into lyx.

As I said earlier, Lyx is already a wonderful gift and actually enthuses me
to write much more than I would normally. My suggestions are just cosmetic
scaffolding to a great product.

To all those who have produced this wonderful tool for writing and
especially to all those who continue to build it - a very heartfelt thank
you!

I have been using it almost from the begining and latex for some years
before that and its been a great journey.

One hopes this is not an inappropriate place to suggest a few things:

1. PDFTK has the ability to add attachments to the pdf file which then
becomes an embedded component or appears to. Could a similar facility be
provided within Lyx. I am aware of the movie 15 but that does not compile
within Lyx though it does compile with pdflatex. However, it does not work
in quite the same way.

To some extent doable already - using the external inset.

LyX already support PDF as a graphichs format, and is therefore
able to include single-page PDF content. Support for vector drawing
software already uses this, LyX cause the other software to export

its native format as PDF, and then uses this PDF as a figure.

The external inset mechanism can be used with pdftk as the "drawing
app" too. Creating a new external inset isn't that hard. (No C++ or
compiling, just edit /usr/share/lyx/external_templates )

Adding support for pulling a single page out of any pdf is simple
using this mechanism. I don't know if LyX can include multiple
pages this way though.

2. Beamer has been integrated somewhat but all my beamer presentations are
largely ERT. Could this be accorded some sort of priority?

Only if you find (or fund) an interested programmer.

3. Tikz now has wonderful capabilities for various aspects which improve the
end results but it is a bit of a pain for those who are not into
programming. Is there any possibility this could be integrated in to some
degree..

Well - is there an editor for tikz graphichs that suits those not into
programming? If so, then LyX, can be adapted to use that. If not, then
make one. I believe "graphichs editing" is outside the scope of LyX,
so an internal graphics editor won't happen. Adding support for an
external editor is much more likely.

This would be very difficult to do. I think it is better to create a PDF with LyX and then use PDFTK
to attach what you want.

I don't understand. movie15 works fine here - I have used it to embed movies to beamer
presentations. The only thing you need to assure is to use absolute file paths for the movie file.
(This is bug http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/1751 .)

> 2. Beamer has been integrated somewhat but all my beamer presentations are
> largely ERT. Could this be accorded some sort of priority?

Well, my Beamer presentations don't use much ERT. There only case where I cannot omit ERT are the
specification of the slides like "<2>". We discussed this issue once and support for this would be a
hard task.

> 3. Tikz now has wonderful capabilities for various aspects which improve the

This won't be possible. TikZ is a programming language like PStricks and can therefore not be
supported. You can of course always use ERT for both but support for them would result in a GUI/IDE
for these languages. LyX itself is already a GUI/IDE, but for LaTeX. We work hard to support this
language as best as possible and thus only concentrate one this one language.

I wonder how slow it would be to fully redraw everything on every
change (maybe with cached inset sizes etc as the old mathed did) and
scrap all those "tell my parent that I need a bit of a redraw - but not too
much, please".

Has anybody tried this? The current scheme somehow suspiciously look like
the result of premature optimization...

Well I would say that the graphics inset is nice but still needs some
work to be default. Anyway IMO it has the same problems, but I didn't

Double congrats! You've been busy... ;-}

Now you will be sleep deprived for even more reasons. ;-)

Aha! But I didn't mention lame excuse #2: my wife's expecting a v2.0 in
July!

Not anymore (I'm told I'm supposed to be excited about this :)

That shouldn't stop you working at night when your wife is working late or
after she's gone to sleep (sneak out to the computer for a few hours of
hacking!).

There's also weekends and early mornings ;-)

Use your imagination! Suggest that the bio-database provide export/import
to/from LaTeX and LyX!

You didn't read the second line, where I mentioned a new job, which means no
more 3-hour reLyX coding sessions masquerading as long lunches.

Ha. Try bioperl.org. I think it'll be a while before I can top that.

They're not really in final form.

Congratulations, Amir!

Very good news indeed.

Wasting? It's the International Year of the Volunteer and everyone should
be celebrating the efforts of dedicated volunteers such as yourself who
tirelessly and selflessly work to produce free software tools.
Especially, tools that everyone wants to have working but aren't capable
of assisting in (because they don't know Perl and haven't time to learn).

Then we can move onto celebrating the contributions of Lars, JMarc,
Juergen, Angus, Asger, Mike, Jose', Dekel, John W. and John L., Baruch,
Shigeru and Kayvan to name a few.

Does this mean we have a maintainer for reLyX again?

Thanks to you for ReLyX. It seems that the huge amounts of your time
coding were not exactly wasted. I hope you got to :) that Friday.
Are we going to see GPL'd database systems for bioinformatics in Perl?
Links to thesis and paper?
Congratulations,

Congratulations!!!

Great news. It's a great accomplishment!

Congratulations!

You're lucky to have written your thesis in an era when such great tools
are available. I wrote mine on a PDP-11 using a plaintext editor and a
fixed pitch daisywheel, pasting in the Greek letters from ruboff sheets.
And I was very happy to have at least a computer available! Didn't look
nearly as good though... looks do matter.

Now you won't have any excuse not to keep maintaining reLyX ;-)
