choose left AND right margin. leaving right margin blank gives a 
centered page. i don't know if this is the default for the
geometry package.

page margins

I've been trying to play with the margins of my thesis to take into
account the binding. What I'm after is to shift the text body a couple of
centimetres or so to the right so that it isn't obscured when the thesis
is bound. I've tried setting the left margin using the geometry package
but the right margin is then also changed to compensate, leaving the page
still centred.

Any help would be gratefully received as I'm hoping to take the thesis to
the binders next week.

Not so good idea, because:
1. after the next upgrade of your LaTeX packages you lose these changes
2. you have to modify this script whenever you want to use another style for
a document.
3. You can't use makeindex (e.g. for LaTeX) anymore like you used to.
4. If there are any other users besides you on this machine who use
makeindex, they will go mad before they realize what has happend :-S

XyMTeX and ppchTeX are two latex macro packages specifically written to
wrote chemical formulas. They need you to write LaTeX code inside LyX
(there is nothing as a "chemical structure formula visual editor" yet...).
I have used the former (inside LyX) and found that it does a perfect job.

XyMTeX is not a standard tetex-latex package. You need to download it from
a CTAN archive and put it in you latex package directory.

good idea! but for those who have root access:

1. delete /usr/bin/makeindex
this is only a link! have a look at it ...

2. create a executable file makeindex in /usr/bin  or /usr/local/bin

StyleFile has to changed to the specific file with full path.
this works for all standard tex-installation on linux. otherwise
look for the real location of makeindex and correct the path.

Best way to insert many pictures

Hi,
I have three graphs belonging to the same paragraph, and want the appear
together beside the text. A part of the text consist of a 'itemize'
paragraph. I tried to achieve this in several ways but I do not succeed:
1)  Inserting three separate figure floats. Inserting figure floats in at
'itemize' environment results in error messages (missing \item commands)
2) Inserting three figures in one float. The figures don't even appear.
When I insert only two pictures, the second figure overlaps with the text.
3) Inserting the figures in a table in a figure float. With the 'floatflt'
option disabled it works, but when I enable it, everything is gone again.

How can I deal with this? I prefer to have three floats, since I prefer to
have three captions.

Another problem is that some pictures are transparant. This are .eps files
create from normal .ps files with ps2epsi.

Who can help me?

The helvet options (which uses the helvet.sty package) does only one
thing: change the sans-serif font to be helvetica instead of computer
modern sans serif. So it does not really helps you. I know it's
stupid, but it is how things are right now...

However, there is a solution: add
  \renewcommand\familydefault{\sfdefault}
in Layout->LaTeX_Preamble. This will not change the disaply on screen
but should be corretc for xdvi/paper.

It would not be too difficult to make a patent style that does that
and gives correct display (especially if a latex document class for
that eixsts).

lyx2rtf?

Unfortunately, many publishers in linguistics have standardised on
MSWord or RTF as interchange formats.  I have had only mixed success
with the existing tex2rtf filters.  However, the LyX display gives a
pretty good approximation of the desired output. I wonder whether it
would be feasible to do an `RTF screen dump' of the partially formatted
LyX display, preserving character styles, etc. It might be that
XML-based editors like AbiWord are the right tool for this type of task,
though it seems on the face of it that the LyX screen rendering engine
does much of the work already.

Just a thought \ldots
